RC,yes,I have often seen young people who have been more mature than the parents- worked as a youth director{unpaid} for a church and felt awful sorry for many of them.
My nephew, who is a huge Yankees fan, is coming in for a visit tomorrow night. That makes this game even sweeter to me although I’m sure he’ll point out that we were playing their B team.
Kind of strange the way when you talk about things……
This morning we were talking about old bloggers and Wurlitzers. The group we discussed were integral in starting the Wurlitzer program. Journalist Jimmy Smith named the award and Carolina Lady wrangled DOB’s address. We shocked hell out of the NotoriousOne with his Johnny Cash drawing – the first Wurlitzer.
I just got an email from Movie producer Chris Milk, who, in partnership with Music Producer Rick Rubin are producing a Johnny Cash video project. Apparently the MIB drawing has had me “tagged as a featured artist’” on the project.
Who would have figured when we came up with the idea, where it would lead?
As much as I love the Conrad kid, I have to agree with those that are saying Thurston. He, Thurston, did himself proud today with that two-out, run-producing hit after Connie had struck out.
I wish the announcers had called our attention to the ’switch-pitcher’ earlier, I would have loved to have paid more attention to him. And I also wish Conrad had taken a few more pitches…have always wondered how an ambidextrous pitcher and a switch-hitter would handle a critical at bat. I’m reminded of a Limerick – no I won’t tell it all cause it’s, after all, a Limerick – that ends with…’they argued all night over who had the right, to do what, and with which, and to whom.’
Another thing about Conrad. Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the kid doesn’t wear batting gloves…and I’ve yet to hear the announcers mention it – last year, or this. But something I had never noticed before today was that Posada doesn’t either – looks like it works for him, certainly did today.
CB, that’s always a sad situation to see. I didn’t mean to make it sound like it’s like that with my parents….they are great. I was just joking that every kid probably wishes they were in a different family at some point growing up, not realizing how lucky they often are.
Have you talked to Schafer recently? Any improvement on the wrist? Did they say how long until he’s hitting live pitching or if he’ll be ready for AAA season opener? Thanks.
Haven’t done it with any of these bloggers but did it with quite a few from an ancient Braves chat room. We remain good friends to this day. Matter of fact, one of the girls from that chat room is coming to visit tonight. We never attended a game together but have stayed in touch for about 14 years now and I’ll finally get to meet her.
some of the fans in the Atlanta area get together at a bar to watch the first game of the season. kinda surprised KC hasn’t started talking about it yet.

nolie,it would be my luck I would end up at a bar with Mitchell and PL. Now, if it was with someone like you,Lew,scoots or some of the other good denizens it would be great.
DOB why would they make a move so soon when teams still have not finalized their 40 man rosters? If they waited tell closer to opening day he might not have been picked up.
Braves are at 37 on 40-man roster. One spot will go to Heyward. They’ll need one spot for Proctor, but not till around mid-April. Joe Thurston could get one, if he wins that job over Conrad.
If you stay in touch with Carolina Lady, ask if she remembers Shelley, CMACC, Bo, Jen, Cuz, and, of course, I was just “Pat” back then. There’s tons more that were on there….they’re just the ones I remember off the top of my head.

FEAR-Don’t get to talk about GWAR all that often. I was an Artist Guest at a Sci Fi convention in Reno some years back and Danielle Stampe and Hunter Jackson were Media Guests – their table was across from mine and we talked a good bit over three days.. Needless to say, it was a raucous weekend.
The Mets’ minor-league system looks a lot better now than most realized last year, when so-called experts rated it near the bottom. Those ratings will need to be re-evaluated now that five young Mets looked very good or better this spring. Left-hander Jon Niese will be the fifth starter (one scout said, “He won’t be No. 5 for long.”), shortstop Ruben Tejada will start the year with the Mets and supremely-talented right-hander Jenrry Mejia may make it as a reliever. GM Omar Minaya was determined not to take Mejia to start the spring, but the momentum seems to be swinging the other way. Plus, Fernando Martinez re-established his value as a bright young outfield prospect and first baseman Ike Davis looked terrific, especially at bat. It’s too late to give ex-Mets exec Tony Bernazard his job back, but if removing his shirt and being impolite once or twice were his only faults, firing him seems like a bad call now.
The Braves cannot pull Manny back. That is a different waivers process, the post trade deadline waivers. If you place a player on waivers to remove him from the 40-man and he is claimed, he is gone.
It is interesting to see the Bravos open up so many spots on the 40-man though. Really don’t see any sort of trade coming, especially not one that would require additional spots on the 40-man. We shall see.
unlike most, i’m disappointed to see acosta go. i got to see a couple of his better performances in person, and i was blown away (as were the hitters). too bad he couldn’t be consistent. ah well. i would wish him luck, but he’s going to the mets organization, so… safe travels?
Acosta got claimed off waivers by the Mets? Uh, … anyways:
Thurston has looked slick on the field every game I’ve watched him this spring and he’s showed a little power too. You have to love Conrad, but Thurston has just out played him.
TexasBraveDOB why would they make a move so soon when teams still have not finalized their 40 man rosters? If they waited tell closer to opening day he might not have been picked up.
That’s the same thing I’m wondering. They already had a spot for Heyward, so what’s the rush to try to clear Acosta? There’s no one else they need to add before opening day, unless they’re planning to give Thurston a shot. But even if that were the case, why two roster moves when you only need one more spot at the most?
Is something else brewing?
Please don’t mistake this post as concern about losing Acosta. I’m really just curious why they are doing it this way and exposing anyone. I have to think the Phils would have claimed Acosta if the Mets hadn’t. Their bullpen is decimated right now.
You can smell baseball just around the corner … fresh cut grass, weather heating up, and the smell of Mutt trolls polluting every rival blog spewing a bunch of BS that only they believe.
Andy-I feel kind of like that with JoJo. My Wife and I went to Toronto for a series a couple years ago and JoJo threw one hell of a good game – one of the best I’ve seen in person -even though if I remember correctly he lost the game 1-0. Come to think of it, Jurrjens threw an even better game to open that series.
Lew – My crappy band in high school opened for Dave Brockie’s (lead singer from GWAR)side band. He was real cool. Took us to waffle house and paid. Seen them several times.

It is interesting to see the Bravos open up so many spots on the 40-man though. Really don’t see any sort of trade coming, especially not one that would require additional spots on the 40-man. We shall see.

“Left-hander Jon Niese will be the fifth starter (one scout said, “He won’t be No. 5 for long.”)”
Really? How’s he ever gonna work his way up through Perez, Pelfrey, and Maine?

unlike most, i’m disappointed to see acosta go. i got to see a couple of his better performances in person, and i was blown away (as were the hitters). too bad he couldn’t be consistent. ah well. i would wish him luck, but he’s going to the mets organization, so… safe travels?

Their bullpen is decimated right now.

which might be one of the reasons that they cleared off extra room on the 40 man roster
