Regional dialect is different than pronouncing a word incorrectly. Especially a very common word. And as an announcer or someone who’s job is public speaking, you are taught to speak without regional dialects, and I’m sure you are taught to not pronounce words incorrectly.
I really don’t see regional dialect and wrong pronunciation as the same thing.
MFin04: Long as you’re spending a lot of time thinking about such important matters, can you find out for me why JFK and others from New England can’t pronounce “park” and “car” and just about anything else with an “r” correctly? Or why the younger George Bush pronounced the word nuclear “nuculer”? And why some of my relatives in North Carolina pronounce athlete “athalete”?
I mean, long as you’re studying linguistics and all.
Hopefully the Braves can get the bats going for KK this year. Soo many great starts wasted last year because the Braves couldn’t score runs for him. Maybe this year they can short Lowe some runs, and give them to KK.
If Chipper stays in the game, then we may get to see this played out. But it would make more sense for the pitcher to have to decide first. Although, it would be intriguing if they had a “possession arrow” type deal, where the pitcher and hitter alternate having the advantage.
DOB – those are all good ones. I can’t watch any movies that are set in Boston. That accent ruins them all for me. But most of those are due to regional dialect.
I didn’t know race was a regional dialect? I suppose a very broad one. It was just a question. It would bother me if I consistently pronounced a common word incorrectly, seems to me it would make one sound uneducated.
I’m doing a pitching chart for KK and CC since I wasn’t sure if they were doing them for ST. I wasn’t seeing it for a few posts so I was getting antsy. Sorry and thanks for keeping us updated.
Been away for a few minutes. In the Tulo discussion, I drafted a couple of fantasy teams this year, and I would have taken Tulo #1 overall without a problem. I didn’t do that even when I had a really high pick because I alwats felt I could get Tulo in the 3nd or 3rd round. Pujols is the only guy I think that will outperform Tulo this year, and well, he’s a 1B not a SS.
And Hanley can be on my fantasy team any day, but I would still rather have Tulo. Hanley has had somewhat persistent hammy/groin issues off an on, and I think there is something to that… scares me away just a tad.
You know Americans pronounce everything differently from the English. You might call it regional dialect. You know what they might think of it? Linguistics vary depending on where you are from. Period. Similar thing with grammar and spelling too, believe it or not.
Diamondsyd – nice clarification on all those rules. I knew that a switch hitter could switch sides of the plate at least once. I take it a switch hitter, normally, can only switch once during an at bat?
the dropping of the r by new englanders comes from the mixing of irish, scottish, and cockney dialects from new englands history of immigrant settlers. thats the short answer the long one involves the far reach of the roman empire and the mixing of romance languages with germanic languages which created the bastardized form of german we know as english.

And then Prado, at least beats the throw from 2nd on his ball to stay out of the DP.
for you guys that havent drafted yet in your fantasy leagues, im telling you right now cano will have the best numbers of any second basemen in the game this year… better than utley, pedroia, phillips etc. his power is really starting to come and i believe he will hit between 30-35 hrs and drive in a 100+. he should keep his average above .300… the thing is utely is ranked in the top 5 in most leagues. if you have a top 5 pick and are thinking of getting chase, you should pass and hope to get cano a couple rounds later. if not, you can get yourself a solid second basemen that will put a similar numbers as utley. phillips would be a good pick…
Glaus musta heard me: Just hit his first home run, to straight center on a 1-2 pitch from CC. Ball bounced straight up off the top of the wall, Yankees are arguing that it wasn’t out.

Sad news to report on the BBQ front: I talked about this place once before, back when folks were naming favorite joints in the south. Southern Soul BBQ was on St. Simons Island, off Brunswick. (I know – weird, right? I doubted it was legit until I tried it – some of the best I’ve had.)
A. Dylan Thomas – on Hanley, it si mostly about the fact that when he has missed games it is always due to a issue with a hammy or a groin. His stolen bases came down significantly last year. And he has struggled with a groin all spring. Just a hunch that there is some reason to be concerned. But like I said, he can be on my fantasy team any time, but I would strongly prefer Tulo and there are about a dozen guys I would take ahead of him.
Wow. The guys in the booth (Brian Jordan and some other dude) have said NOTHING about the ambidextrous pitcher. They think he’s just some minor leaguer they know nothing about. Ambidextrous pitcher huh? At first I was thinking its gimicky. After thinking about it for a while its really no different than a switch hitter. My hangup is on why the hitter has to pick his side first. Who made that rule? If there was a vote clearly switch hitters would win.
With all of the chatter about regional dialects and spellings, I’m surprised no one has brought up the fact that two of TnBrian’s posts on page 2 have words with transposed letters. I saw “shrap” for “sharp” and “thrid” for “third” in his play-by-play, but it didn’t hinder my understanding or enjoyment at all. I’m from the Backwards State (one of several I have lived in, both coasts and up the middle), and I hear people turn words into unrecognizable goo all the time. Everywhere I’ve lived or been has something unique about its local speech patterns. One thing I can’t abide, though, is when someone says the TOTALLY WRONG WORD and gets defensive when corrected. I work in an electronics store, and I frequently get asked for “printer cartilages.” I don’t even try anymore.
