Conrad, Hinske homer in win over Phillies

Clearwater, Fla. — Brooks Conrad hit a tying two-run homer in the seventh inning and Eric Hinske hit a winning solo shot off Ryan Madsen in the ninth as the Braves beat the Phillies in front of a sellout crowd of 9,068 at Bright House Field.

Conrad has been in a close race all spring with fellow utility infielder Joe Thurston for the last open spot on the Braves bench. Manager Bobby Cox reiterated Monday that no decision had been made….

Tim Hudson allowed four hits, two runs and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings pitching for Class AA Missisippi against Gwinnett in an intraorganization game. Hudson and Braves officials decided to have him pitch in the minor league game instead of facing the division-rival Phillies twice in one week so late in spring training….

The Braves will install Greg Maddux’s retired No. 31 in Turner Field’s Monument Grove Tuesday in a 2 p.m. ceremony open to the public. Other retired numbers in the Grove belong to Hank Aaron (44), Eddie Mathews (41), Dale Murphy (3), Phil Niekro (35) and Warren Spahn (21). All major league teams also retired No. 42 to honor Jackie Robinson.

Maddux was a brave and a HOF pitcher but IYO what was the biggest game doggie ever won?

Won lots, yes, but big games? he doesn’t figure in braves history in MO.

Conrad’s OPS is .807 and Thurston’s is .749 after today’s game. Conrad has also been better defensively this spring. Cox has noted a number of great defensive plays he’s made. I also like that Conrad is a switch hitter and clearly has more power than Thurston. Thurston only hit 1 HR last season with St. Louis.

Conrad is also already on the 40 man roster as well. So at this point it should be an easy choice in favor of Conrad for the final spot, IMHO.

Greg Maddux doesn’t figure in Braves history, Chief?

Look at the 1995 World Series box scores. I’m pretty sure Mad Dog pitched an all-time classic in that series. Don’t remember which one. But 3 Cy Youngs in Atlanta, plus all those years of being a key guy in getting us to where we were able to go, more than makes him a blip.

Benjamin: You’re correct and his overall playoff stats are pretty good too. Not as great as Smoltz’s playoff stats, but still good.

To sum it up, Tim Dix doesn’t know what he’s talking about regarding Maddux. Er, I mean “Chef” Tim Dix. :)

We faced J.A. Happ 2 times in a week. I guess the Phillies just aren’t as worried about us.
