Leo Mazzone was down in the dugout and on the field for batting practice at a couple of Braves games last week, the first time the longtime former Atlanta pitching coach was on the field for a Braves game since working two of them as a Fox TV analyst in 2008.
Those are the only times he’s been down there for any Braves games since 2005, when he left Atlanta for a three-year, $1.5 million contract with Baltimore that made him the highest paid pitching coach in baseball at that time, and gave him a chance to work with his best friend in baseball, then-Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo. The two grew up together in Maryland.
Perlozzo ended up fired in June 2007, and Leo was fired by new manager Dave Trembley at the end of the season with a year left on his contract. Leo hasn’t coached since, but has said many times that he’d like to.
He’s worked the past year as one of the morning sports-talk hosts on 680 The Fan in Atlanta, which this year became the flagship station of the Braves radio network. Leo will do the radio pregame shows this season, and last week he did a couple of games (680 has sent various on-air talent down this spring to broadcast all the spring games on its main station or two AM sister stations).
I talked to Leo for a while on the field, first to get some stuff about Bobby Cox for something the AJC is doing later on Cox. Then I got talking to him about the current Braves team, its resurgent pitching staff, what he thought about the division this season, that kind of thing.
There were a couple of times where I could hear the emotion in his voice and see it in his face. He took a shot at the Orioles, but only had praise for the Braves and particularly for Cox, whom he worked with for the entire run of 14 consecutive division titles.
The man still misses this badly, that much seemed obvious to me.
So anyway, in place of a usual blog today, since we have a freelancer covering the Braves-Mets game in Port St. Lucie and no one there to blog, I thought I’d share with you the Mazzone interview, what he said (well, except for some of the Cox stuff, which we’re saving for later).
Carroll Rogers covered Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament, and had a day at home before she heads down to cover Braves for a few days.
I will return to Dark Star this weekend for the final stretch before the Braves break camp and bring the whole thing north. Opening day is less than two weeks away, folks. We’re almost there.
And here’s Leo.
♦ On being down on the field and in the dugout, talking to Cox and others before a Braves game: “You get some mixed emotions. It’s fun to see everybody, and it’s sad that I’m not wearing that uniform. So it’s mixed emotions.”
♦ On the quality of the current pitching staff — starters and relievers — compared to the great ones led by Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz: “It’s getting close. Let me tell you something, that was quite impressive yesterday. When I see the bullpen changing speeds the way they did, and I’ve always felt that if a reliever looks like a starting pitcher when they’re coming into a game, that you’ve got yourself a good reliever. And those guys look like starting pitchers when they come in.”

Mazzone vists Tom Glavine on mound
♦ On the Braves’ chances this season: “There’s no reason why they can’t pull this thing off, maybe win the division. The key to the club is the health of the first baseman [Troy Glaus] and the third baseman [Chipper Jones]. If they can stay healthy, I think there’s a real good chance they can win the division. They can take it away from Philly. Philly doesn’t have the depth and the pitching staff that the Braves do.”
♦ On the Braves’ long run of playoff appearances: “Let me tell you something, that 14 straight, when you’re a part of that, that’s history. I mean … you end up getting very emotional talking about it, to be honest with you.”
♦ On why former Braves pitchers talk about Cox’s importance to their success: “He let them have some input. And the other thing, he made pitchers first-class citizens in spring training. Whereas you go to a lot of organizations –- if someone from another organization would say to me, ‘Let’s get the pitchers over with [in spring training workouts] so we can get them out of the way,’ they’re losing.
“He built spring training around the pitching staff, whereas there’s a lot of organizations that build spring training around getting the pitchers’ done, getting it over with.”
♦ On what made the Braves such a great place for pitchers: “It’s funny. I try to explain that to other organizations, how it was run here and how you get it done, and they don’t want to believe you. ‘What kind of running program did you have?’ I told them, Well they ran out in the outfield, then I told them to add two [sprints] every day, but I wasn’t counting. And they [other teams' officials] say, well what about …
“The other day there was a thing where [former Braves starter Kevin] Millwood, who’s with the Orioles now, said he loved throwing twice in-between starts here [when he was with Atlanta]. Of course Dave Trembley said, ‘Well we’re not going to do that.’ Of course he [Trembley] has had too much success.
“But it’s amazing what people do not want to believe – how this [Braves] operation is run, the way the coaches work… They don’t want to believe that it’s that simple. They think there’s some secret. The secret is that it’s the manager and some good pitchers. And good players. And good coaches.”
♦ On Cox being a manager known for letting his coaches coach: “Oh. When first became a pitching coach, he said, ‘Leo, I don’t care what else you do, just take care of those pitchers. Be with them all the time.’
“And we had some tremendous conversations in the dugout over the years…. We had a lot of fun with Mad Dog [Greg Maddux], trying to figure out things. Bobby goes, ‘Any time he asks me a question, I’m sending him to you.’ He told [Maddux] one time how to get a guy out, and then [Cox] he says to me, ‘If that guy gets a hit on that pitch, I’m gonna shoot myself. Next time I’m sending him to you.’”
♦ On Tom Glavine and John Smoltz doing some broadcasting this season: “You’ve got Smoltzy in the booth, you’ve got Glavine in the booth, and you’ve got Mad Dog in the [Chicago Cubs] front office. I can’t see Mad Dog in a coat and tie. I can see Glavine in one, but not Maddux…. Smoltzy can B.S. his way through. They’ll be good at it, like anything else.”

NO MORE BUFFALO by James McMurtry
I guess we knew the cards were stacked
Started out the best of friends
And we beat that highway ’till it quit beating back
It didn’t mean much in the end
Some you win, some you lose, some you throw away
♦
We headed South across those Colorado plains
Just as empty as the day
We looked around at all we saw
Remembered all we’d hoped to see
Looking out through the bugs on the windshield
Somebody said to me
♦
No more buffalo, blue skies or open road
No more rodeo, no more noise
Take this Cadillac, park it out in back
Mama’s calling, put away the toys
♦
Don’t chase that carrot till it makes you sick
What do you think you’re gonna prove
Kust let it dangle till it falls off that stick
That’s when you make your move
♦
Don’t go chasing after shooting stars
Trying to make yourself a name
You could joust at the windmills with that old Fender guitar
You’d probably do about the same
♦
No more buffalo, blue skies or open road
No more rodeo, no more noise
Take this Cadillac, park it out in back
Mama’s calling, put away the toys
♦
I never thought they’d ever doubt my words
I guess they were just too tired to care
I’d point to the horizon, to the dust of the herds
Still hovering in the air
Somebody said it ain’t any such
Man you wish so hard you’re scaring me
♦
‘Cause those are combines kicking up that dust
But I guess you can see what you want to see
You can keep on chasing what used to be there
Top that rise and face the pain
But man they were here, they were here I swear
Not just these bleaching bones stretching across the plain
♦
No more buffalo, blue skies or open road
No more rodeo, no more noise
Take this Cadillac, park it out in back
Mama’s calling, put away the toys

So Leo thinks the Braves can top the Phillies? So what? He ALWAYS says that, so this is no news. Hell, the Braves could trot out the Class-A affiliate for the year and Mazzone would say they should win their conference..Can’t stand rose- colored glasses.

Leo Mazzone had the easiest job in the world. You could have put nearly anyone in his spot and there would have been no difference. Right place, right time. 3 Cy Young winners and guaranteed first ballot HoFers makes your job easy.
It’s when things got tough (Russ Ortiz as your ace for example) Mazzone bailed on the Braves and now realises what a huge mistake that was.
Sorry Leo, your sucking up to the team and fans will do you no good now.

Afternoon folks…
Couple quick thoughts before the Braves and mets tee things up. DOB, listened to the interview on the ABT podcast, well played sir.
At the time Mazzone left to go to the O’s, I was happy for him seeing that he was long time friends with Sam Perlozzo and was hoping for the best for him, however I can’t say I’m surprised with how badly it ended up just because I feel Peter Angelos is a train wreck as an owner. Having said that, I’m very happy with the performance that Roger McDowell has turned in as pitching coach. It stinks that it didn’t work out for Leo, but I am sure he knew what he was getting into by going to Baltimore. Hopefully he’ll have a chance to get back into the game somewhere down the road. I really feel for the guy.
Thanks for posting his thoughts, DOB.

Roman Gal……..your resentment is misguided. If Kelly didnt SUCK so much, Prado never would have had an opportunity to unseat Kelly at second.
My question to you is this: Where does your allegiance lie first? The Braves team or individual players? My reasoning is that if one is truly a BRAVES FAN first and foremost, then one would want to see the players out on the field who gives us a best chance to win.
Prado and Diaz’s emergence helped kick start the Braves offense in the 2nd half of the last season. Sure, I maybe understand you taking a liking to Kelly. However, do you want your desire to see Kelly given chance after chance to SUCK override your desire to see the Braves win?

From the last blog:
Still chuckling at the Grinch @ 7:05.
Danga @ 8:53 am
Check these out from stats from the 2009 season:
Fewest Left on Base: 951 wins, 1322 losses, .418 winning percentage (Also: 157 ties).
More Times on Base: 1880 wins, 393 losses, .827 winning percentage (Also: 157 ties).
I am fully aware of the concept of OBP, and do not require an elementary lecture. The original statement under rebuttal was “RBI are overrated” (along with HR).
Check out these Braves stats from 2009:
Number of games with 9 or more LOB (one per inning avg): 58
W-L record in those 58 games: 32 – 26 (.552 winning percentage)
Number of these games lost by 1 or 2 runs: 14
Number of these losses in which our Braves had 2 or less RBI: 6
If the Braves had produced more RBI in the close losses, their record of 86 – 76 would have been closer to the Pythagorean of 91 – 71. It also would have made the playoff race more interesting.
This makes a lot of sense too.

When Bobby leaves and the Braves get someone on the lines of Freddi Gonzalez or Ned Yost to manage, Mazzone will be asked to come back. That is something I would personally like to see. I think the issue w/ Leo was that the pitchers generally felt he was a little too old school. Not w/ his personality, but w/ his methods. I’d have to go digging, but I’m almost positive there were interviews w/ Braves pitchers after he left that indicated the concensus opinion in the clubhouse was that his methods just weren’t working w/ the younger pitchers.
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty positive that our pitchers, generally speaking, responded positively to the idea that we were moving in a different direction w/ a younger coach who was thought to be a bit more in tune w/ modern coaching methods. Not that Leo wasn’t a great coach in his day… you know what I mean.
Personally, I think McDowell has done a very solid job. I worry about us burning through our best relievers, but I feel like that’s more on Bobby than Roger.

I was checking the 25 brackets that I filled out to see which one I was doing the best on as far as the number of Sweet 16 teams left. I have one in particular that I picked on the foxports.com contest sponsored by Hooters’. I correctly picked 13 of the 16 Sweet 16 teams. Also, I have 7 of my Elite 8 teams are still alive (only Villanova, which I had projected to lose to Duke in the Elite 8).
Anyway, in this contest, I am ranked tied for 51st nationally. You get 1 point for correctly picking the 1st round, 2 for the second round winners,, 4 for Sweet 16 winners, 8 for Elite 8 winners, 16 for Final 4 winners, and 32 for picking the winner of the championship game.
I have 51 points while the leader has 57. However, I was looking at the brackets of all 50 entries ahead of me and I’d say that 90% of them had Kansas at least making the Final 4, with the vast majority of them picking Kansas to win it all.
So if the following happens, I could be the winner of this contest (which would garner me 2 round trip tickets to Las Vegas….3 day/2 night stay for 2 people at the Hooters Casino Hotel…….$200 room credit (I guess to order room service or order pay per view adult films, lol)……….2 tickets to attend the Hooters Casino Show………transportation to and from the airport……..AND my personal favorite, a month’s supply of Hooters’ Wings.
Sweet 16……
Michigan State over N.Iowa (I had Kansas)
Tennessee over Ohio State
Syracuse over Butler
Kansas State over Xavier
Kentucky over Cornell (I had Wisconsin)
Washington over West Virginia
Duck over Purdue
The Baylor vs. St. Mary’s game is the only game I cant win because I had Villanova winning this game.
Elite 8…….
Tennessee over Michigan
Syracuse over Kansas St.
Kentucky over Washington
Duke over (whoever)
Final 4….
Syracuse over Tennessee
Kentucky over Duke
Championship….
Kentucky over Syracuse
So what do you guys think? Do I have a chance?

Yeah, I mean, you have to give a lot of credit to the individual pitchers, but I don’t think you can entirely discount the work Mazzone did w/ some other guys. Tough to ignore the results from guys like Millwood, Burkett, Jorge Sosa, Jaret Wright, etc. Some of those guys were complete reclamation projects.
Conversely, he’s had his share of flameouts… Davies and Marquis come to mind. But if you’re going to credit the successful pitchers w/ spurring their own development, I think it’s only fair to lay some blame at the feet of the pitchers that fail, too, right?

ATXRaindog- I’m not saying Leo Mazzone wasn’t a good pitching coach, but most of his succes came when he had the big three at his disposal. He certainly couldn’t figure out how to build a closer which bit them in the behind in the post season many of those 14 consecutive division winning years. I guess starters are his specialty?
Hey, I say the same thing about Joe Torre. The guy sure got smart as soon as he took over that Yankee powerhouse. Up until then he was a below .500 manager with many years under his belt.

My man. Looks like the BRAVES and METS are pretty evenly matched at this point in 2010. That’s not something I would have said starting off the past two seasons. I thought the METS quite a bit better than the BRAVES at this point in ‘08 and ‘09. FLA. looks improved as well. STRASBURG alone will help the NATS, although he’s not slated to start the season in D.C. – HARRISBURG I believe. And with HALLIDAY, the PHILLIES have to be improved. For the objective enlightening baseball thoughts from the likes of Brian from SC. I mean, up here in NY all these fans think the Mets injuries actually impacted their season last year. Can you believe that? They lost their 1st,3rd,4th and 5th hitters along with 3 out of 5 starters and their closer to injuries last year and now they use that as a crutch for not playing better.

Some of us know baseball and some of us don’t. Heyward has not looked horrible, he’s been fine it’s just baseball. Gotta remember if a player hits .350 he still makes an out 6.5 times out of 10 AB’s. And you folks who say start him in AAA because of contracts, you’ve lost your minds. Well,
Here are my observations. The Mets offensive looks for real. They have hit 26 homers to the Braves 10. No homers for Glaus, and only one for Chipper. Ike Davis and Fernando Martinez have both outplayed the “star” Jason Heyward, who suddenly appears to be suffering from Nate McCloutitis. It’s going to be more of the same for you Bravo fans-decent pitching but not enough offense. While I don’t think the Mets will catch the Phillies this year, I think we have an excellent chance of winning the WC this year, I think our team and our pitching staff we be better than people think. I see the Braves finishing 3rd or 4th in the division depending on the Marlins. Our offense blows the Braves offense away.

i agree about the concern of heyward. but not the concern that he wont produce in the major leauges this year, just the hype that he will hit .280 with around 20 homers this year. i dont see it happening for a few reasons. but this kid has great talent. he does have holes in the swing. and pitchers will know how to pitch to him after a few plate appearances. i do feel he will adjust, but guys like arod, griffey, wright, longoria, mauer. i dont think he is in that class like the hype has shown.

JD: PL – what were some of the Braves’ listed addictions?
PL: jeffrey d….key addictions listed were Melky, Wagner, Glaus, and and Saito. Key losses were Garret, Mike Gonzales, Soriano and Vazquez

“Again outs are the most precious thing in baseball.”
Then why are there specific strategies designed to trade an out for a run (e.g. – squeeze play, deliberately trying to hit a fly ball to the outfield to get a SF, deliberately trying to hit a grounder at the SS or 2B with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs)? Take it further – why are there strategies designed to sacrifice an out for the improved CHANCE of scoring a run?
Why do the teams who successfully execute these strategies celebrate and rejoice when they do so? Because they traded a more valuable commodity for a lesser one?
I think it’s the other way around.

They may work once in a while in a specific situation as a tactic, but teams that rely on them as regular strategy are always among the lowest in runs scored.
Most all GMs are now developing large stat squads and making your outs last longer is one of the most important concerns.

Nolie and Tom O’, I agree on the sacrifice thing. I’ve never seen anything quantifying it, but I want to conserve that out. I have never liked it, even back when I did it (coach’s orders). It’s stupid.
The only time I want a sacrifice is when the other pitcher is tough to reach, the eighth place hitter gets on, there are no outs, and Javier Vazquez or similar stands in. Then, maybe. I get tired of watching guys not get bunts down and I get tired of attempting to move the runner over in the middle of the lineup while sacrificing a runner. No. It’s Mauchian and it’s stupid.

Pro baseball (or sports) is fantasy land financially. For example, Joe Mauer gets $180 million contract extension. The economy is in a recession, unemployment is 10 %,the federal government is 3 trillion in debt, and MLB players keep getting their millions.
I’m a fan for sure but why doesn’t the recession include pro sports ?
Can’t a pro player make it off $1 million instead of $6 million or up to $18 million per year ? If they can afford to pay players salary increases then they could reduce ticket prices for fans instead.
If a hitter plays 162 games he will get about 600 at bats. If he hits .300 he will have 180 hits for the year. Divide that into $18 million and that is $100,000 per hit and $42,857 bucks per out. Unreal.

I resumed the argument because the statement under rebuttal was “outs are the most valuable commodity in the game”,
I do not believe that is true, and I have provided numerous reasons (from economic, tactical, and logical viewpoints) to support my belief. What I have received in return are arguments supporting the merits of OBP.
It is a cause (partial) and effect situation. High OBP (and, consequently, out avoidance) is a partial cause of increased run production. I say partial because there are times (especially in late innings of tight games) when outs are actually sacrificed in order to score runs or to even increase the probability of scoring runs.
Run production is one of the two Objects of the Game (run prevention being the other). Out avoidance is a means to that end.
And from Steve from OH: I don’t know why you’re starting this discussion again, baseball 101. I don’t think anyone (particularly you, it seems) wants to hear me and the others come out of our mothers’ basements spewing new-age garbage. Heck, I don’t even want to do it.
I don’t care if you come out of your mother’s or father’s basement spewing whatever Age garbage. Please do not be so presumptuous as to what I do and do not want to hear. Again, the discussion was what is the most valuable commodity in baseball. Runs or outs?

Baseball note for any international player junkies. The spring HS baseball tournament was playing on TV over the weekend, and my brother-in-law tipped me off to a game being pitched by a 16 yr old lefty that might make some waves in a couple of years. Tall, lanky kid whose fastball already sits mid-high eighties and has a pretty good slurve to complement it. Pretty projectable body type. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him throwing 93-95 in a couple of years. The annoucers said he’d picked up about 7 mph on his fastball in the last 12 months alone. Can’t remember his name right now to save my life, but he’s probably going to be a good one. Kind of reminded me of John Candelaria the way he slotted his arm. Hope the Bravos are keeping an eye on him!

how about Paul Hewitt meeting with St. John’s tonight in Atlanta (reported by Andy Katz)?
Katz reports that Tech would likely lessen or eliminate the buy out if Hewitt will leave per Katz. Katz also threw out Tubby Smith as the obvious choice for the next Tech coach.
How many coaches have been head coaches at Tech and UGA??

of course runs win games, we are talking about the most efficient way to score the most runs and small ball on a regular basis ain’t it.
Based on stats from real game histories, in the long run sacrificing an out for a base actually lowers the number of runs scored. When you play for one run that is usually the most that you get.
It might be appropriate at a certain time late in a game when one run can win it for you, but it is not a successful regular approach.
Believe what you will, but the conservation of outs is the hottest thing going at the new GM levels. It will only continue to grow.Team OBP correlates higher with team runs scored that any other single stat.
OK, have i bored every body enough now, Scoots, Braveheart ?? At my age I gotta write it out every so often to be sure I remember it all.

I’m a fan for sure but why doesn’t the recession include pro sports ?
It has. The top talent is making more than ever, but the lower tier are making a lot less. Troy Glaus took a HUGE drop in salary to prove he’s healthy. A lot of guys who would have gotten nice contracts two years ago are accepting half that. And veterans are getting deep-sixed in favor of cheap rookies. I think Sheff is still looking for a job. Garrett Anderson got a million last year, he’s working for minimum wage today, if he even gets that.
Put it this way. Johnny Depp is still making huge dollars. A lot of other former stars are working in indie movies for $200K or less.

Runs-vs-Outs debaters:
Seems to me that the debate is like capitalists arguing over which is more important, working capital or profits. It’s apples and oranges; the two are key measurements of different things..
Think of OUTS as working capital–each team gets 27 units of working capital to invest (or more accurately, “to spend”) during the game in order to earn the largest PROFIT (RUNS). So OUTS are a measure of capital to risk during the game, and RUNS are a measure of the resulting profits; i.e., the reward–the return on capital invested . Does that make sense? If nothing else, it’s a new argument to shoot holes in, so fire away!

11 season in Atlanta with a 2.63 ERA and 4-8 with a 3.42 ERA in NLCS games, almost a full run higher. Very good, probably great, but still off the absolute greatness displayed during the season. And yes, he is a first ballot guy and one of the greatest pitchers ever.

Alright Geoff no need to break down to insults now just because you can not counter points correctly. First of all I would like to say and I will stand by the fact that Maddux is not a GREAT postseason pitcher just a middle of the road guy. 11-14 overall in the 13 seasons he was there. He has a good S.O. to B.B. ratio but that is his MO with out that control he would have been meat. Further more a 3.28 ERA in the post season is not great. The great pitchers have it in the middle to low 2’s. So with that being said I realize that none of the Braves pitchers really have great stats because they did not hit, at all. Unfortunately everyone knows the post season is about pitching and making the 3-4 runs a game you get count.

Ok if we are going to single game/season accounts I could bring the point of him posting a 0.00 in 2008 over 3 games but only 4 innings into the argument and that helped drop his ERA a decent amount or the ‘02 and ‘03 season where he played 6 innings and gave up 2 runs in each game help lower his ERA. 18 Wheels of Love, me thinks you’re right. Cabrera WORKS-THE-COUNT better than Nate. Though he’s not exactly a “patient” hitter, he certainly seems to have a better idea of what to do leading off. Nate might just excel hitting 7th or 8th, probably in that 8 spot.
I look at it like this….. you could platoon a Diaz/Cabrera at leadoff and keep Martin in his 2 spot and be just fine. Neither one of those guys are burners, but still have decent enough speed to steal you a base now and then. It’s not like Bobby would let Nate steal 30 bags if he were getting on base a lot at leadoff anyways.
If Chipper and Glaus stay healthy and McCann-Escobar just do what they’ve always done than whatever Heyward gives you is icing on the cake. I didn’t really like CJ’s comment that the lineup isn’t the same without Heyward in it. Why put more on the shoulders of a rookie than necessary?

I don’t necessarily disagree that Cabrera should be given a shot at leadoff, but he most certainly does not work the count better than McLouth by any measure. McLouth walks more (9.3% to 8.0%) and sees more pitches (3.91 Pit/PA to 3.70). Cabrera swings at the first pitch far more (26% to 17%). McLouth gets himself to a 3-1 count more often (15% to 9%), and a 3-2 count more often (13% to 12%).

That being said… I like Leo but I’m also not in a “Bring Leo back” mode right now. Hopefully the Braves will have few injuries to speak of this year which has been 1 of the complaints against Roger since he took over the job. Well, that and the bullpen for a few years.

If Cabrera is consistent at reaching base as a leadoff hitter, say 370-380 OBP, he’ll be starting everyday. If Cabrera succeeds in this role, the 3 players rotating for the last 2 spots are Heyward, McLouth and Diaz. Most likely you’ll see a Diaz/McLouth platoon in left.

Drew-I don’t think it’s a matter of the Kids we have now, but it’s been pretty well publicized that some of the Kids pitching for the Braves during Leo’ pitching coach tenure didn’t really get on with Leo all that well – one of them was Jason Marquis.
If you go back and look at Leo’s days with the Braves, many of his biggest success stories were transforming pitchers like Ashby, Burkett and Jaret Wright back to a semblance of effectiveness and not turning Kids into Superstars.
I believe that most of us feel that almost anyone could have mentored Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz and that it had more to do with their ability and less with Leo’s tutelage.

Dang…Cabrera’s got a career .290/.373/.408 line in the leadoff spot, albeit at a small sample size. McLouth’s is .260/.345/.458.
There is probably something to be said about Cabrera trying to be more patient when he hits at the top as opposed to the bottom. But I don’t think it’s a big enough factor for him to be able to maintain a .370 OBP over a long period of time. But it wouldn’t be the first time someone has made a jump like that at his age. Let’s not forget that during the Braves streak, he was able to piece together quite a bullpen. From long-reliever to closer there were definitely some good years. That is what I give Leo more credit for than the Big 3 starters IMO.

RHR claims it’s her having MFIKY as her Enforcer that gets her’s there faster. Far be it from me to doubt her. She’ll give me a nickname if I’m not careful – or make me face down that cold steel stare from 60 feet away.
That’s exactly right. Don’t think that just because he’s in Tampa that people in the A have forgotten that he will kill them.

Phillies versus Braves on ESPN right now.
Yesterday, Conrad stunk it up. Thurston looked pretty good. I wonder if Thurston has the edge on the last bench spot?
Venters didn’t look too good either.
Hope the Braves can throw the ball and catch the ball a little better today against the Phils.
