Yunel worries me with his carefree attitude. I keep hoping every year he will snap out of it yet it seems to almost get worse. He’s very talented and I would hate to see him waste it. I hope Chino stays on him this year.
Misses the Braves, really? He took off to Baltimore to be with his team, and dumped him after a few short years. He showed loyalty to the Braves, the Baltimore showed no loyalty to him. And that’s the way it is, March 23, 2010, good night.
I have to give Bobby his due on that one. He touts the right-center power that Escobar has and then BAM, Escobar jacks on to right center for a 2 run homer, lol.
i don’t think Yunel is carefree…I think he plays with tons of emotion, he just comes off a little show-boaty sometimes, due to his cuban style…i think it was TP who said last yr that they’d much rather have to tone a player down than try to hype him up…to me, this indicates that the issue is not carelessness. he’s getting better every yr, both on the field and in and around the clubhouse.
Perhaps the official scorer will give McLouth a hit on that one……..just like the scorer did on that grounder by Heyward that Rollins lallygagged in the dirt that pulled Howard off the bag.
Bobby interview – some filler, but relevant points were “calling” the Escobar shot to RCF (Ghost is right), basically saying Heyward will be on the team (”it’s his time”), and he likes the team.
Leo will get his chance to be pitching coach again next year with the Braves. When Bobby leaves and the Braves get someone on the lines of Freddi Gonzalez or Ned Yost to manage, Mazzone will be asked to come back. That is something I would personally like to see. I don’t care much for Roger McDowell. With Mazzone here, this exact pitching staff would be much better IMO.
What were we thinking? That if there had been a runner in scoring position, Frenchy woulda struck out at a pitch off the plate. That’s what I was thinking. Thank goodness he ISN’T a Brave.
it drives me nuts when former braves do well in games against us.. i like seeing them do well in their career but not games against us..hats off to frenchy..i bet he will never see a first pitch fastball in the strike zone against hansen ever again
I generally detest Joe Morgan calling a game but he had a good point on Yuni. His comment was that you need to practice like you play. His piint was that if you are going to side-saddle a ground ball in ST rather than get in front of it, you will do the same little-league stuff when it counts.
I think the issue w/ Leo was that the pitchers generally felt he was a little too old school. Not w/ his personality, but w/ his methods. I’d have to go digging, but I’m almost positive there were interviews w/ Braves pitchers after he left that indicated the concensus opinion in the clubhouse was that his methods just weren’t working w/ the younger pitchers.
I could be wrong, but I’m pretty positive that our pitchers, generally speaking, responded positively to the idea that we were moving in a different direction w/ a younger coach who was thought to be a bit more in tune w/ modern coaching methods. Not that Leo wasn’t a great coach in his day… you know what I mean.
Personally, I think McDowell has done a very solid job. I worry about us burning through our best relievers, but I feel like that’s more on Bobby than Roger.
jeffrey, that was a shot at Frenchy because he said if OBP% is so important than why doesn’t it show up on the score board. At least I think he said OBP%.
What’s up Braves fans? Didn’t even realize our guys were squaring off today. I’m just not a big spring training games guy. I find the games boring. I’ll watch when I come across a game but I don’t follow them religously.
Enough about Leo. The guy was a “Master” with 3 HOF pitchers, not so much without. You do the math. Give me Dave Duncan anyday. Now there’s a guy who can make ice cream out of you know what.
Yurtle_the_turtle; chill out dude. He said “If they can stay healthy, I think there’s a real good chance they can win the division.” He didn’t say they “should” as you asserted, and certainly never said it would be easy or that the Rome Braves could do it. Get a life, dude. I heard him mention on the radio last week that the Phillies have the most talent. But that also does not always win out.
Hanson might have been feeding Francouer’s notorious 1st pitch swinging habit in ST to set him up for the regular season. Maddux used to do stuff like that.
BTW- Frenchy, his wife Catie and their three dogs were the picture of the week in the NY Daily News sports section this past Sunday. The guy is loving NYC and NYC appears to love him. Who’d a thunk it? I know, I know- just wait until he doesn’t hit etc.. But you have to admit he’s taken to the place a lot better than even I could have hoped.
I was checking the 25 brackets that I filled out to see which one I was doing the best on as far as the number of Sweet 16 teams left. I have one in particular that I picked on the foxports.com contest sponsored by Hooters’. I correctly picked 13 of the 16 Sweet 16 teams. Also, I have 7 of my Elite 8 teams are still alive (only Villanova, which I had projected to lose to Duke in the Elite 8).
Anyway, in this contest, I am ranked tied for 51st nationally. You get 1 point for correctly picking the 1st round, 2 for the second round winners,, 4 for Sweet 16 winners, 8 for Elite 8 winners, 16 for Final 4 winners, and 32 for picking the winner of the championship game.
I have 51 points while the leader has 57. However, I was looking at the brackets of all 50 entries ahead of me and I’d say that 90% of them had Kansas at least making the Final 4, with the vast majority of them picking Kansas to win it all.
So if the following happens, I could be the winner of this contest (which would garner me 2 round trip tickets to Las Vegas….3 day/2 night stay for 2 people at the Hooters Casino Hotel…….$200 room credit (I guess to order room service or order pay per view adult films, lol)……….2 tickets to attend the Hooters Casino Show………transportation to and from the airport……..AND my personal favorite, a month’s supply of Hooters’ Wings.

Yeah, I mean, you have to give a lot of credit to the individual pitchers, but I don’t think you can entirely discount the work Mazzone did w/ some other guys. Tough to ignore the results from guys like Millwood, Burkett, Jorge Sosa, Jaret Wright, etc. Some of those guys were complete reclamation projects.
Conversely, he’s had his share of flameouts… Davies and Marquis come to mind. But if you’re going to credit the successful pitchers w/ spurring their own development, I think it’s only fair to lay some blame at the feet of the pitchers that fail, too, right?

@ Anders
