When players sign long-term contracts like Mauer did today, how are teams able to insure the contract? An eight year contract on a catcher sure seems like a risk. Not sure what the actuarial tables would say on that.

i can’t take it anymore, I bought one month of MLB TV (the online package) just to catch a few month spring games. As long as you have a good high speed internet connection, I think you’ll like it just fine. Video quality is good.

Only complaint is that I haven’t been able to get the DVR functionality to work yet. They told me I had to install something, which I did, but it still doesn’t work. I just haven’t felt like calling their (apparently overseas-based) customer service again to mess with it since I won’t need to keep it past this month, living in ATL area.

Hay-hay, y’all! Long time no read! Just got our computer back. It’s been in the “hospital” since Friday–needed a hard-drive transplant. We still had this old eMac, but the internet was a little too slow for Blogging, and I can hardly make heads or tails outta those crummy “mobil” sites on the iTouch. Plus we can’t work our iPods on that old computer, so it was almost weirder than the time our internet and cable were out for 10 days. But anyway, after about four days with pretty much no computer, I have returned! (”Yee-haw”, right? )

sidslidkid Mauer is better (Sorry McFann).

Good stuff on the ABT interview, DOB (and thanks for the link ABTSteve). I’m glad to hear you get so much satisfaction from the blog. Lord knows you put enough time and effort into it, so it’s nice to hear that all your long hours and hard work pay off for you too – and it’s not just us reaping all of the benefits.

And glad to hear about the clubhouse chemistry being so strong this year. I kind of got that vibe from all the stuff you’ve written this spring, but it’s often hard to tell just from the optimistic quotes players normally throw around this time of year if there really is truth behind their statements. So to hear some of those stories and feeling you’re getting from the players makes me even more excited for this season…

Enjoy your couple of days off!

abwright

If you look at the 40 man, once Diory goes on the 60 day DL, most of the spots in the position players are held by folks who could legitimately come up if someone gets injured.

That leaves the pitchers as the only folks who could make room for Heyward, Thurston, or Proctor (whomever gets a roster spot).

If I understand correctly, moving someone off the 40 man exposes them to a waiver claim.

That’s why there’s so much talk about Acosta or Reyes getting traded. Most of the pitchers wouldn’t make it through waivers. Still, the Braves have time til Proctor is ready to make that decision.

Awesome interview DOB – keep up the great work. I appreciate ALL inside information regarding the Bravos, being a long time fan. In this day and age, with all the demands on your time, I am very grateful for any and all 411 that you provide. You truly go above and beyond the call of duty towards putting a personality to the player and adding that 3rd dimension to the 2 dimensional baseball players we see on TV.

Oh..BTW..RBI’s are not overrated. They are a measurement of a player’s propensity to produce in the situations that deliver THE most valuable commodity in the game – a RUN. Yes – the stat is largely dependent on the offensive ability of other players. However, if the “run – producing” positions do not perform, then all that OBP goes for naught (LOB is the stat that measures this).

Baseball 101, while you happen to be 100% correct, I assure you that if you think BA, HR, RBI, W/L, K, BB, ERA or any other stat that’s been printed on baseball cards for a hundred freaking years and is actually relevant to the game of baseball will garner you anything but scorn or derision by discussing them here, you’re in for an ugly and disgusting treat. According to most here who never leave their accounting offices or basement dungeons (which apparently don’t have TV’s), our two best players are Nate Mclouth and…well, I’m not entirely certain they like anyone else. Jurrjens, perhaps; not because he’s a great young pitcher but because he’s high (or low) in some stat they invented to compensate for never having known the warmth of the sun or the embrace of a woman other than their mother.

I’m an accountant and am not really a fan of the fancier stats. Mainly, I get enough math in real life, don’t need it in a game.

David, your interview was terrible. I haven’t actually listened to it yet, but thought a different angle was becoming desperately necessary.

Well Grinch, your name was specifically mentioned in the interview, for what it’s worth. :)

Miley Cyrus to mentor ‘Idol’ singers

To do what? Talk like a man? Just because she’s famous doesn’t mean she’s a good singer

To take over the world, of course. Between Miley Cyrus, American Idol, and Facebook today’s youth have no chance. It’s like the next coming of Gozar. Choose the form of the destructor.
