Jupiter, Fla. — After praising young relievers Craig Kimbrel and Jonny Venters before the game Wednesday, Braves manager Bobby Cox had kudos afterward for the performances of left-hander Mike Dunn and Jesse Chavez.
The Braves have two spots available in the bullpen, and Dunn and Chavez are among the few with major league experience competing for those spots.
Chavez pitched a perfect eighth inning against the Marlins on Wednesday, which was encouraging given his struggles this spring. He began the day with an 11.57 ERA and .429 opponents’ average, having allowed nine hits and four walks in 4-1/3 innings.
The slender right-hander doesn’t have any strikeouts, but against Florida he did a better job keeping the ball lower in the strike zone. It was presumed that Chavez had a bullpen job to lose entering spring training, and until Wednesday he’d done plenty to lose it.
The Braves got him from Tampa Bay in a December trade for Rafael Soriano.
Dunn pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout for the save, and didn’t walk anybody for the first time in six spring appearances.
The hard-throwing lefty came from the New York Yankees in the three-player package for Javier Vazquez in December. Dunn is a converted outfielder, and the Braves knew when they got him that he had good stuff but was still erratic.
Dunn has a 1.42 ERA and only four hits allowed in 6-1/3 inning, but before Wednesday he had more than twice as many walks (seven) as strikeouts.
In the dugout before Wednesday’s game, Cox indicated that Kimbrel, 21, has done enough this spring to put himself into consideration for a bullpen job despite his lack of experience above Class A. Projected as a future closer, the only question about Kimbrel entering camp was how long it would take for him to improve his fastball command.
While it’s still a work-in-progress, Kimbrel has issued just three walks and allowed two hits in four scoreless innings this spring. He has six strikeouts and a .143 opponents’ average, and the Braves might decide that his inexperience isn’t enough to keep him back.
Meanwhile, Venters has used what Cox called a “super sinker” to limit opponents to five hits, one run and one walk with three strikeouts in 5-1/3 innings this spring.
Cox likes the lefty a lot, but noted that Venters, who’ll turn 24 in three days, has been used almost exclusively as a starter in recent seasons.
He made 29 starts in the high minors last season, going 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA at Double-A Mississippi and 4-7 with a 5.62 ERA in 17 starts at Triple-A Gwinnett.
Venters had an alarming 77 walks in 156-2/3 innings in 2009, but has shown much better command of the strike zone this spring.

I think it’s too early for Kimbrel to be in our pen. He won’t get consistent work up here, plus there is no real need for him. Let him stay in Gwinett this season.

I thought he had some control problem in AFL but it seems like he has worked it out. Great job for him.

Calling Chavez’ inning today “perfect” is nearly a technicality. The last two outs were near-bombs that went to the warning track.

That’s what I thought Enigma. If the wind was blowing 10mph harder he might have been charged with a couple home runs.

I don’t think I would put Kimbrel in the pen yet. Like VP said, not going to get enough work in here. He can close in Gwinnett and really knock out any of his remaining issues. With the depth the Braves have there is no need to rush him.

O.K. Nate time to pick it up a notch. You don’t want to go to Gwinette do ya?

Gwinette? When did we have a farm team in Gwinette? I always thought it was in Gwinnett…just me I guess…

The Kimbrel talk is just that. I don’t believe there is any way that he is going to be brought up–especially considering his biggest problem: control. Guys who have control issues need more innings to work out the issues so why in the world would the Braves bring him up now especially since he has very little experience in the minors?
Just one more newspaper guy saying more than he should just to get people’s interest up. Really annoying. Who knows, maybe it’s the sports editor or whoever makes up the headlines. It’s really those headlines that are always extremely misleading.

Mr. Enigma:
“Near bombs” to the warning track are still outs. Baseball history is full of former players or prospects that never made it who had “warning track power”. Chavez and Dunn should get the spots because Kimbrel needs seasoning in the minors, particularly if he is ultimately beng groomed for the closer’s spot.

I’m with Enigma and Marc D. on Chavez. He got three outs, but the last 2 were just SCORCHED! He hasn’t done anything this spring to warrant a place in a ML bullpen. However, knowing the Braves, they will put him out there to justify the Soriano “trade”.

All I can say is the way Bobby uses his pen, the turnover rate for it will be pretty high again this year. By mid season we’ll be seeing several guys from Gwinnett and Mississippi if I don’t miss my bet who didn’t make the team out of spring training.

I wonder if Bobby Cox and Mike Woodson are somehow related? Woody grinds his frontcourt into the ground (minutes-wise) the same way Bobby grinds his bullpen into the ground. Maybe Woody will ride off into the sunset with Bobby after this season.

Richard Simmons I was just checking out to see if you knew how to spell gwinnett. This is a blog not a classroom. You want to check spelling go back to grammar school. At least you are smart enough to get jist of what I was writing about.

Actually, I agree with you – Nate is looking like he could use a little AAA time.

If Chavez and Dunn are the “depth” we have here, we’re in big trouble. If our bullpen “depth” is Acosta, we’rin even bigger trouble….
