I try not to put too much weight on the spring stats but you have to believe McLouth’s struggles makes Heyward even a bigger favorite to land the job. He could easily be the best OF we have! Yes, we all have the Heyward fever.
I admit I do wonder about Matt Diaz leading off. He just hits and hits and hits and hits, etc. I know with Bobby’s affinity for platooning its unlikely that Diaz would be the every day (imagine Melky leading off… barf), but sometimes it makes sense to me. He gets on base consistently, he plays hard, he swipes bases every now and then. He’s not a traditional lead-off type… but I find myself saying “why not?”
Kelly’s Johnson, I thought about that the other day when Jason stole a base. He is a patient hitter, will draw his walks, can steal 20+ bases and not strike out a lot. He could for this season only, be our form of a Jeter, Rickey Henderson, or Grady Sizemore, a guy that can hit in the middle of the order with his pop, but his overall game and approach at the late can make a deadly leadoff guy.
Heyward leading off. LOL where do all the morons come from? Is there an idiot factory out there somewhere that specializes in creating imbecilic baseball fans? Gotta be.
Geez, I wish either McDowell would work harder to get Acosta under control, or he’d listen. Don’t know what the problem is with his consistancy, but he does have great stuff. A great curveball to go with a mid-90’s heater coming out of the pen is a huge asset.
To others, as for Heyward leading off, I thought about that idea, myself, a while back, but if he really has what it takes to be the next Darryl Strawberry, I’d let him be.
It does warrant consider still, though.
Maybe Freddie Freeman will make the team, and we can play him at first and Troy Glaus in left. From what I’ve gathered of Freeman so far, the idea’s not the farthest-fetched idea.
I still want to see more pop on this team. Maybe Hank Aaron himself can teach some folks how to drive the ball.
Either way, love seeing our regular 4-5 hitters doing so well! Obviously they’re not the only ones having good Springs, but man…BMac hitting .600 in Spring Training? Wow…just hope he hits half that during the season!
Dies Irae, Is that you who should not be named? Think about this, would you rather have Jason hitting 1 or 2 or have him mired in the 6/7 hole? We all know no matter how deserving he might become this year to hit 3 or 4 or hell 5, Booby will stick with Chip, Glaus and Mac. It’s like an unpeneratable fort for those 3 spots.
Talked to Schafer before the game, and he said he felt better hitting today than he had in 10 weeks. It was just soft-toss BP from coach, not live BP from a pitcher. But he swung hard, pulled balls, and had no pain in the surgically repaired hand. Said he just needs to keep strengthening the hand and wrist, so that he’ll be able to hit consecutive days, instead of trying to take BP before he’s ready and then having to rest a day before he can swing again, etc.
