Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – Tommy Hanson will start the Braves’ Grapefruit League opener Tuesday against the New York Mets at Port St. Lucie, Fla., while Tim Hudson gets the home opener Wednesday against the Mets.
The most anticipated Braves pitching appearances might be in relief Friday, when new closer Billy Wagner and setup man Takashi Saito are scheduled to pitch in a home game against Washington.
Derek Lowe will start that game against the Nationals, and it was announced Sunday he will start the April 5 regular-season opener against the Chicago Cubs.
Kenshin Kawakami will start Thursday against Pittsburgh, and Kris Medlen fills in for starter Jair Jurrjens on Saturday against Houston.
The Braves hope Jurrjens, recovering from shoulder inflammation, will be ready to make his first start next week. He will throw off a mound Monday for the first time this spring.
Following are planned Braves relievers for the first Grapefruit games.
Tuesday: Medlen, Jesse Chavez, Michael Dunn, Chris Resop, James Parr and Manny Acosta.
Wednesday: Peter Moylan, Eric O’Flaherty, Jonny Venters, Steve Marek, Jeff Lyman and Mariano Gomez.
Thursday: Jo-Jo Reyes, Lee Hyde, Erik Cordier and Juan Abreu.
Friday: Wagner, Saito, Todd Redmond, Mike Minor, Dunn and Chavez.
Saturday: O’Flaherty, Acosta, Resop, Kyle Cofield, Jose Ortegano, Craig Kimbrel.

Derek Lowe is the last person I would have expected to start the season opener. I would have bet money that it would’ve been Hudson.

Beauvighn,
The best part of spring training is being able to see some young guys that might not be up for a year or two. I hope Heyward is in the lineup that day.
Go Braves.

The Braves no longer schedule Tech or UGAg for ST exhibitions. Not for over 3 years, now.

Season has not started yet and Cox is already making “smart” decisions. What the heck is Lowe doing as the opening day pitcher? Are tommy and Jair sick or something? What about timmy? Hellooooooooooooooooo anybody thereeeeeeeeeeeee????????

Savannah, they stopped the college exhibition game last year because of WBC, but I thought they’d pick it back up again this year. They did not, however. Probably due to economy.

Geez can we at least wait until the season starts before the armchair nuts second guess the HOF manager?
This is why Atlanta sports fans get such a bad rap.

DOB,
Has Don Sutton or the Braves indicated any interest in getting him back in the booth for some of the games on TV? It’d be great to hear his analysis again, especially with the prospects of having to listen to Chip full time.
Thanks

DOB, can you do a post (or comment) about some of the pitchers we don’t know much about like Venters, Marek, Hyde, Parr, etc. Do any of these guys have true ML talent that can definitely help the team, or are they just warm bodies?
Also, each year someone emerges from seemingly out of the blue. Is there anyone the coaches are talking about that we may see emerge as someone that my help us this year?

Lowe was the number 1 pitcher last year and won 15 games. If he is realy back it should be that or more. That leaves the Braves true No. 1 to face the other teams no. 2, our no 2 to face their No. 3, etc. It sounds like their is strategy involved in this decision and it could be good for the team. As with all decisions, we will have to wait to see if the outcome is what would be expected.

Can somebody please keep the Braves broadcast booth stocked with helium balloons so that Chip’s voice will sound high all of the time and not that back and forth stuff like he has now? Shouldn’t someone above the age of puberty be over that voice changing stuff?
Remember Chip, you don’t have to laugh at EVERY lame joke that comes down the pike. ‘Specially your own lame jokes. When it comes to humor, you’re not in the league with your dad. Not even close. So just call the games, because you aren’t close to Boog in that area either.

Except that it’s apparently not sunny in FL today according to my family and friends that live about an hour west of Dark Star. And, have you all actually read the other story about why Lowe was chosen as the opening day starter? There was strategy involved and explained in that article.

Great to have the MLB channel in HDTV now…it’s time for the tv industry to get gamin’ here in the 21st century. It’s still seek, pick and choose to see a Braves game in the Atlanta market in HDTV. More often than not it’s square screen, sound without picture or vice versa in Atlanta re Braves/HDTV. C’mon folks, about the only way we can depend on Braves HDTV is if Atlanta is playing New York. Geeez…
