Some here (not many) complaining earlier about excessive Heyward coverage, give me a break. We’ve still had as much coverage about other guys as we ever have in the first week of camp, because we’ve got more overall coverage than ever with all the online stuff we’re doing.
In just the past two or three days we’ve had stories on Escobar, Schafer, Chavez, Proctor, Cox, updates on Jurrjens, more on the Dominican shortstop, the Hinske thing, and several items on Heyward that — despite how you might feel personally — have been read by more people than anything else. So take the complaining elsewhere.
We’re trying to write what people want to read, and right now the Heyward thing is the kind of spring training buzz story you don’t run into very often. He’s a local kid. We’re going to write the hell out of it as long as he’s the buzz of camp. And he has been, by far.
How is Melky fitting in among the Braves? Is he being well received? — joerochester
I can’t honestly tell you I’m aware of how he’s fitting in with teammates in general, if he’s had time to get to know everyone yet or whatever. But I can tell you he’s a hit with the Latin players, based on the group of about 12 that was crowded around his locker stall this morning when he and a couple other guys were telling stories I couldn’t understand (in Spanish). Lots of banter, laughter. But like I said, I haven’t asked or seen much interaction with other guys to really know.
Still so early, lot of other stuff going on. What you asked about will become more apparent in weeks to come.
18 Wheels of Love: Unfortunately I don’t know anyone at that label to send me an advance of The Big To-Do. The last time I got an advance copy of a DBT album was when my buddy Don still had his CD store open and gave me Brighter Than Creation’s Dark two months before it came out. That, needless to say, was quite cool.
I could stand for him playing in the 3rd or beginning of the 4th. Teague is the exact opposite of Bibby and I like his energy. I think Crawford plays too many minutes. He seems to be giving Evans more PT.
Sometimes though the players just have to figure it out themselves. Don’t just stand around like that. I’m sure Woody isn’t screaming Iso all the time and this is before they get tired. This is still a young team and they don’t have the focus they need all the time. Just hope they get it together before the playoffs.
I’m not saying Teague should be around in late and important situations. I’m saying he should be around period. He didn’t play at all tonight. And I don’t think any bench player except Crawford had more than 10 minutes.
DOB ——-
d’you see where DBT is opening a few dates in the summer for Tom Petty + Heartbreakers? As soon as the presale starts, I’m gonna be all over that!! … already have the logistics worked out and everything … Cleveland in July!!

When I was the music director for my college station we got advance copies all the time. It was sweeeeeet. The only down part was that for all of the great albums you’d get, you would get triple the crap.
I get what you’re saying jeffrey and I agree about the bench, Woody isn’t perfect but Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, and Jamal Crawford are our vets who are out there most the time and consistently get into that isolation type style offense and don’t change for long periods. Got to have some leaders on the court.
First time really watching short track this olymipcs Heath and i’ve got to say its pretty interesting. Never knew they had rivalries and stuff.
I’ve got to get somewhere where I can calm down after that Hawks loss. Jason Kidd is a punk.
By the way, all of this Hayward stuff is getting exciting for me. I’ve sat in a basement and chilled with him when he was on my best friend’s brother’s high school baseball team. I personally know two stars in the Atlanta area now. I’m looking forward to seeing this new net when I head down to Spring Training in a few weeks. That’s scary deep.

Yeah but I can take solace in knowing they have won just as many championships as us which is zero so yeah they won tonight but that choke to Miami in the finals that year still has to be painful. So close yet nothing.
jeff teague needs time to develop. He really could have used another year at Wake. He has great speed and hops, handles the ball well, and has a decent shot. He can get out of control and turn the ball over. He had trouble at the end of last year though most of it is attributed to James Johnson (not a surprise that a girl is also involved).
If you need to get back on the Teague bandwagon look on youtube for his dunk against NC State and his dunk against Maryland. Just sick
I went back and read the blogging during the Hawks game on this blog and the Hawks blog. It’s kinda sad to say that the knowledge on here is probably superior to that of the Hawks blog.
brian: Most coaches could have taken Teague’s great natural instinct and turned him into a great role payer on a good team by now. We have Woody, so he’s just killing another rookie point guard.
Tough break for Ohno, there. But he’s had his fair share of good luck, as well.
Soph I really don’t get this short track “officiating”. He got a dq for slighly touching the canadian who likely fell on his own but because Ohno was touching him he gets Dqued. My first time ever really watching the sport but this olympics but I have yet to see consitency with these calls but I admit I don’t fully understand the sport and its fouling.
Yeah I hear you Heath. I believe the other kid Celski(I think that his name) got disqualified when the guy grabbed him from behind and he reached back to keep from falling and knocked the guy down when he fell so he gets the DQ. I’m trying to understand it but like you said it is exciting to watch. Well at least I get Hockey, was at work today when I saw the score. Team USA just dominated Finland. Wasn’t expecting that.
Did you folks see that there’s an insiders report on ESPN comparing Dent to Griffey? And another one on “How good can Hanson be”? I love it when the Braves get love from the big sites.
Well, no sh!t, but of the two, I really don’t think we’re missing much at the current moment without Andrus. I’m really not all that sold on him, anyway. Losing Feliz sucks, yes. Absolutely. But you’re trading for one of the premiere offensive players in the game, so what do you expect? That we trade them Kyle Cofield and Jonny Venters?
Look, of the 5 players we traded to Texas, maybe one of them is a starter for us this year. Maybe two of them stick for us in the bigs long-term (that’s a stretch, given how good Yunel is). Harrison, Salty, and Jones had no future with this club and, at the current moment, really aren’t all that good anyway. So why the wailing and gnashing of the teeth? Because we ended up giving up one good prospect for one of the best offensive players in the game? Damn that Schuerholz…
And keep in mind who he kept in our system–Tommy Hanson, whom the Rangers (allegedly) asked for and the Braves (allegedly) flat-out refused to give up.
As for the Tex deal, I hated it then and now. Im over it and Tex is still a douche, but we’ll move on. However, the only two I will miss from the deal is Andrus and Feliz. Im a huge Yunel fan, but you can always find room for Andrus on your team.
I may be late but wanted to get in on throwing out nicknames for J. Heyward. Being that he is from Henry County, correct? We should call him Henry Hammer, or the Henry Hammer, hammer from Henry….
What do you think… Throw back to Henry “The Hammer” Aaron. Go Braves.
jeffrey: Tex is an alright guy. He’s a little misunderstood. He seems like one in some interviews and some of the things he says is pretty weird. But I stayed until midnight the night he got in Atlanta just to get his autograph. He came over and talked to me and my friend for about 15 minutes so I still have a good deal of respect for him.
Many of us are interested though, who pays for the damages? The Braves or the owner’s insurance?– TooSlim73
It’s a dealer car. Braves have arrangements with dealers and get free cars for their executives. So he (Manno) wouldn’t have to worry about it going on his insurance, I’m sure.
ColoradoBravesFan: Me and some friends that knew him from Henry High are supposed to go to the game with a Henry Homers sign. I guess that’s alright for a fan group, but I’m not digging the Henry Hammer thing that people are saying. I just know that I’m gonna be calling him J.Hey from the stands.
Could someone please post the ESPN Insider article on Heyward? Curious what they are saying, especially since they seemed to miss his batting practice.
DOB – I like your Braves coverage even if I do not always agree with you. BUT…. please tell me you did not come up with that crap. If so stop listening to Cash when writing your blog.
nolie, I agree with you. I feel like most of the complaints about Tex have to do with the deal for him, which is entirely about two different front offices and not him. Yes, we gave up a lot for him, but not nearly what the Yankees are. I doubt the prospects whom we traded will ever earn anything approaching the contract that Tex currently has.
Heyward the next Griffey?
2:10
PM ETAtlanta Braves Top Email The Atlanta Braves are proud to house the top prospect in the game, Jason Heyward, a power-hitting right fielder with a plus arm and, well, plus everything, really.
He’s just 19, but may make it awfully tough to send to the minor leagues at the end of March, especially considering the impression he is leaving on the Braves veterans, writes Tim Kurkjian.
“It sounds like a 30-aught six going off when he hits the ball,” said Braves pitcher Tim Hudson. “I was walking through the outfield, I heard that sound, turned and said, ‘What in the heck was that?’” Derek Lowe agreed about the sound, saying, “his BP is frightening.”
Like Griffey in 1989, Heyward could break camp with the Braves at age 19.
Keith Law
Heyward’s No. 1 for a reason
Heyward will be a middle-of-the-order bat with power and patience while playing above-average defense in right with a plus arm. He has an advanced approach at the plate, something that was already in place when he was a 17-year-old high school senior, and strong, quick wrists that let him commit later to pitches while still driving the ball to all fields. He gets good leverage in his swing and has plenty of loft to eventually produce 30-plus homers a year, and so far hasn’t shown any tendency to expand the zone because he’s trying too hard to hit for power. In the field, he has outgrown center but moves extremely well in right with good reads off the bat. And you can see from all of the above that he has a high baseball IQ, with good feel and/or instincts in every area of the game, especially for someone his age.”
HEYWARD TURNING HEADS AT BRAVES CAMP (12:33 p.m. ET)
Braves right fielder Jason Heyward has had some prodigious batting practices so far this spring.
“It sounds like a 30-aught six going off when he hits the ball,” said Braves pitcher Tim Hudson. “I was walking through the outfield, I heard that sound, turned and said, ‘What in the heck was that?’ ”
Pitcher Derek Lowe agreed about the sound, saying, “His BP is frightening.”
Heyward said Thursday that he weighed in, clothed, at 250 pounds. He said in spikes, he stands 6-foot-6.
“He is huge,” said Braves catcher David Ross. “His hands are huge. Hank Aaron was here the other day and talked about how big Jason’s hands are. And Hank has big hands.”
The Big Easy as a nickname for Jason:
-it conjurs up memories of “Big Hurt” /Jason is huge!
-Jason is easygoing and good natured.
-He makes the game look easy.

Seriously! Woody’s a rookie killer. Especially when it comes to rookie point guards (a la Acie Law).
It’s probably a good thing we didn’t draft Chris Paul. He’d be out of the NBA by now if he played for Woody

I just know that I’m gonna be calling him J.Hey from the stands.

nolie, I agree with you.
