Cox doesn’t buy Chipper retirement talk
Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – Chipper Jones has said it more than once, but with all due respect, Braves manager Bobby Cox isn’t buying it.
Jones said late in his career-worst 2009 season that if he struggled to a similar degree in 2010, he would retire. This despite a three-year, $42 million contract extension signed one year ago, which starts this season and runs through 2012.
Cox was asked what he had thought about Jones’ comments late last season, which the former National League MVP reiterated recently.
“I never took them to heart at all,” Cox said Thursday. “He’ll play three more years, and play good.”
Jones has insisted he would forgo the money left on his contract and “ride off into the sunset” if he could no longer play the game at a high level.
Among switch-hittesrs, he ranks second with a .307 career average and third with 426 home runs. He needs 55 RBIs to reach 1,500 and 28 doubles for 500.
Jones hit a career-best .364 for his first batting title in 2008, then saw his average plummet 100 points to .264 in 2009. His career-low 18 home runs snapped a streak of 14 consecutive seasons with at least 20 homers.
Since reported for spring training this week, Jones has talked not of retirement, but how he likes the team’s chances at a playoff run if the Braves stay healthy and get better production from him and others.
He has also talked about how optimistic he is for the Braves’ future.
“For pretty simple reasons,” he said. “[Pitchers Tommy] Hanson, [Jair] Jurrjens, and some young kids that are in the minors. The Braves have done a very good thing in getting back to their roots and stockpiling that farm system.”
Right-hander Arodys Vizcaino came from the Yankees in a December trade for Javier Vazquez, joining a growing stable of top pitching prospects in the Braves’ low minors.
Vizcaino, Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado are projected as top-of-the-rotation pitchers, and all are likely to pitch at high-A Myrtle Beach at some point this season.
The Braves “are going to reap the benefits” in the future,” Jones said. “It’s probably not going to be while I’m here, but… When you talk about a rotation of Hanson, Jurrjens, Teheran, Vizacaino – man, that’s talking about future No. 1 [starters]. You’re not talking about 4’s and 5’s.”

Do you think Chipper is the type to stick around with the braves after he retires? I think DOB did a piece about that not too long ago, Chipper being a coach. That would be cool. Along with Murphy, one of my all time favorite Braves. I could see him being a hitting coach a la TP.

I have been living in Atlanta for over five years from LA. By the way, the Dodger’s will have a Terrible year this year. Manny is coming back for a year & the Mccourt’s divorce ( Greed) will destroy the team for years to come.
I wanting to become a Braves fan but find it hard with Chipper still on the team. This guy should not be on the Brave’s and should RETIRE! It upsets me he’s being paid this year by the Brave’s. The bone-head mistakes Chipper makes is like watching my son play T-Ball.

I’ve been a braves fan since the days of Dale Murphy and Bob Horner, and I’ve yet to see a player enjoy the game and the winning aspect of it as much as Chipper. He has been a student of the game since birth, and will make a great coach someday. I’m normally not this hostile, but either you are joking or you don’t know how to spell baseball, much less comment on it.

Whoa, Dodger fan . . . your treading on sacred ground, while last year was a little rough on Hoss, the year before he hit .364 and deserved the gold glove @ 3rd base . . . look it up, compare his fielding with the eventual winner, David Wright. He had Texeira hitting behind him. He had to watch a lot of junk up there last year without the protection and they pitched around him a lot. The last two months were really rough and if you could ask him, he’ll be the first one to tell you. Just give him the first half of this year, I think you’ll be pleased. And by the way, welcome to Atlanta and the Braves bandwagon.

Chipper is to be admired as a class player. He has done more for the Braves than any of the other so-called career guys, (I will not mention here). Don’t forget the salary sacrifices he has made so that the Braves could obtain other players. And, I sure wish Bobby Cox knew when to use the word “well” versus the word “good” in a sentence.

If this is Chipper’s team, its going to be another long summer ! After leaders like Justice, Glavine, Maddux and McGriff left, it became Chipper’s team by default. since 2002 (his “injury-proned years”), chipper jones has been worth 50% more, on the field, than what he’s been paid. once again…that’s only on the field….
i guess chipper should get on steroids or hgh so his body wont break down like a normal 34-38 year old. you anti-chipper idiots know nothing of baseball. before last year, chipper outperformed his salary 5 years straight. find that from another steroid free 31-38 year old. also, chipper has never had less than 432 plate appearances in a year and has had over 500 for the last 3 years (which is averaging more than 3 plate appearances per game).

I think Chipper will have a good year… .297 with 26 homers and 96 RBIs… But I doubt they’ll have enough to win the division. I do think they win the wild card. Keep your eyes on Florida… they could upset our October plans. Philly wins the East.
St. Louis wins the Central pretty easily…By default.
No doubt this is San Francisco’s year in the West. With the addition of Madison Bumgarner, this is the best rotation in baseball. Bumgarner’s numbers in 2 minor league seasons… 15-3, 1.46 ERA in 2008, 12-2, 1.85 in 2009, and a cup of coffee with San Fran, 1.80 ERA. Oh yeah, he’s a lefty with a 95 MPH fastball, and spots it like Maddux. Along with Lincecum, Cain, Zito, and Sanchez, who threw a no-no last year, they are the team to beat in the NL. I guarantee you’ll hear the comparisons of Lincecum, Cain, and Bumgarner to Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz several times this year.
We would face them in the first round if the above comes true, and we’d have a better chance in a five game series than a seven. Of course I’m pulling for Bobby and my Braves, but my money would be on San Francisco. Come on Chipper and let me be wrong!

I can only suppose that the people begrudging Chipper on this forum are either fans of rival teams or just plain ignorant.
I too have been watching the Braves since the days of Torre, Murphy, Horner, and I-285 Perez…and I will plainly state that Chipper is the best pure hitter that I have EVER seen come out of our farm system. He is clearly a future HOF’r… the only derogatory thing I can say about him is the Hooters incident. If that hadn’t happened his face would be plastered on every Nike commercial on the television.
He is absolutely amazing, all-world!
The same people hating on Chipper are probably the same ones hating on Bobby Cox….yup, another future HOF’r.
I see people saying that Chip should retire so that we could spend the remaining money on FA’s to revamp the offense…. My question is this:

Whatever. Chipper will hit over .300 this year and hit around 20 homers. Apart from that he is valuable in the locker room. Unless he hits .264 again and plays a crappy 3rd base there is no reason to start pushing him out the door.

Nobody has four #1 starters because they can’t afford them, except the Yankees and Red Sawx. By the time those low-level minor league pitchers are ready, we will have traded or not re-signed Hanson and/or Jurrjens, or the minor league guys won’t pan out or will suffer injuries as so many young pitchers do. It’s silly to think we will have a rotation of Hanson, Jurrjens, and 2 other studs a few years from now.

It amazes me of all the Cox & Jones haters out there. These guys brought so many pennants to Atlanta and now you trash them. Glad I am not your friend!!!! Jones will be fine this year. People act like hitting .265 is like leprosy…check the stats. Most major leaguers would be happy with that average. Chipper is fine tuned to be Bobby’s replacement. Obviously he is well versed in locker room talks, low key, and baseball smart. Right now he is the second voice of the Braves behind Cox.
Atlanta is such a fair weather fan’s town. In 2008 Chipper won the NL batting crown and you are still not happy! Cox, Pendleton, Wren and the rest are doing their respective jobs well. Can you say the same of yourself?
There are 30 teams in MLB, of those only 8 go to post season…that is less than 27%. From Spring Training a team only has a 1 in 4 chance of making the playoffs. Get over it. Enjoy the game! Take your kids. Run with your beer buddies. Most of all, just enjoy the game!

DOB, do you think the 500 HR/3,000 hits marks are important goals for Chipper? 3 years at 18 HR per year would leave him 20 HR short, and 3 years at 140 hits would leave him about 175 hits short. I know Eddie Murray is the only switch-hitter to do this, it just would be a shame if Chipper fell just short. Hall of Fame lock regardless, but real close to a legendary achievement.

Its always funny when fans judge players based on moral, or for that matter think an organization would base its team transactions on moral… Pt is Chipper is a good ballplayer, clubhouse head, therefore good for the organization. Chipper is a hall of fame level player, but why does everyone insist on framing career stats in terms of him being a switch hitter? Hall of fame voters aren’t going to give a second thought as to how he ranks in terms of switch hitters. It’s just a convenient way to make him appear to be the best ever by artificially narrowing the field.
Same for anyone that tries to measure a pitcher in terms of lefties only.

Growing up and watching the Braves play at the “Golden Standard” that we all expect it is hard to see the way the team has been playing the last 5 years or so! But it is not near as hard to watch as all of these “experts” trashing Chipper! He is the last of a dynasty! 10 years ago Im sure the same ppl were praising Chipper! I may be young, but I dont think its right to just use someone for the teams benefit for 15 yrs and then turn your back on him when he has 1 bad year!

Why is it that we forget that Pro Athletes are human just like anyone else? They are just human’s and will make mistakes just like anyone else. Only Chipper knows what was going on in his life at the time that caused him to make that decision. These are people who deal with pressures in life that the majority of us could never comprehend or begin to understand. Yall really need to sit back and think about how you would look if every aspect of your life was published on ESPN and every major new network around the country every time you do anything. In reality it is non of anyone’s business what these athletes do off their respected fields of battle. Their personal life’s should be just that, personal.
How soon many of the Braves fans out forget the days of finishing in the basement year after year. The fact that we had a 14 year run of excellence is over looked. The fact that BC is responsible for that is over looked. The fact that Chipper made many of those years possible is over looked. The fact that Chipper took salary cuts and restructured his contract to free up money is over looked. It is easy to sit back and armchair quarterback the moves that were made a few years ago but at the time many of these same fans were ecstatic that the deals were made at the time. No team is going to do it every year. Every team is going to go through up and downs. If you don’t understand that and don’t except that then you are just fair weather fans and don’t respect the game. Chipper is worth every penny of his current contract to the Braves in what he will bring to the locker room and every practice teaching and mentoring and molding the team that we will be watching here in the near future. Let the man be and enjoy the game of baseball the way it should be. Respect and understand how his sure presents and leadership on the field and in the dugout will greatly enhance McCann, Heyward, Freeman, and McLouth’s career’s as they learn from one of the games best players of all time.

I’m excited for this year in many ways…excited to see how the team comes together around Bobby Cox in his farewell season, excited to see how the young pitching staff jells, excited to see some of the young bats and how the vets come together, and excited to see out new closer…I just hope everyone can stay healthy! hoping to get to check out our boys when they play down here in Jupiter at least once before the end of spring training, and I’d love to make it up to O-town if possible…

Man I can’t wait for Chipper to retire so we can get to wear some comfortable shoes. Running around in cleats for 6 hours a day for 6 months a year will put a powerful hurting on ya when ya got feets like Chipper. If Troy Glaus can’t protect us and keep those pitchers from making us dance in the box, we are going on strike come July. You losers can bitch and moan all you want but Chipper and us are going to retire to the hot tub and count cash. Thank God we got that contract signed before the depression started, we wouldn’t be able to get Chipper a million dollar a year contract nowadays…not after last year. Those cheapskates at Liberty would have been able to buy two big boppers for what they are paying Chipper the next three years. SUCKERS!!

Hey, I have 16 big reasons why Chipper won’t retire, few people are staring at $16 million to retire on. I believe he’s more than capable of handling the boo birds for that kind of money. Why don’t you ask a garbage collector, taxi driver, a guy working at McDonald’s if he could handle 3 months of boos for that money. We all know the answer is, if anyone is dumb enough to post that Chipper has principles, then be out of touch with reality and write it, go ahead.

Hey b for bravos,first of all I `am not a braves fan,but I pull for them because they are my home team,second of all I have nothing against Chipper because he`s a man just like I`am,but my only point was if you interpret well is that the organization has gotten rid of some really good players for making the wrong decision.I don`t give a rats a%* if Chipper comes back or not because he`s not going to be the one to determine how successful the Braves are this season,and for you KC you are exactly right,a players personal business should not be publicized,but you know what because he is a a public figure it was brought to the public and the organization should have handled it the way they handled all the other players that screwed up.My point again for those of you who only understand what you want is that the organization is still under that good ole boy system and this does not have anything to do with past batting averages;and by the way the great pitching staff and David Justice are the only reasons that we do have 1 championship in which we won 1-0 from the homerun that Justice hit and great pitching.My point is also this—Chipper has done a tremendous job for this organization,but his off the field issue was handled differently from everyone else.Wrong is Wrong regardless of how you look at it and who it is.Remember that there is a judgement day!!!

After all he has done for this team, Hank, Dale Murphy, and Chipper Jones are the historical faces of this franchise, not your beloved Smoltz or Glavine, they are traitors who decided to turn their backs, yet everyone receives them with open arms and bashes chipper? espn’s garbage with Karl Ravech driving the truck. although they are airing the game on monday! I recorded yesterdays Baseball tonight thinking it would be worthwhile, still had to FF past 5 minutes of a-fraud highlights. had to shout out to lemer previously, after looking up stats ill swap mcgriff in there, Justice did have 5 rbi’s. pretty strong as well.

How can Wren tie up $15M a year to Chipper and $15M to Lowe and cry that can’t field a top quality team because of budget restrictions. He chose to invest $30M a year to those two when no other team in baseball would do that at this stage in their careers.

If Chipper has another season where he bats in the .260s and leaves a ton of guys in scoring position then he needs to hang up the spikes.
Personally, I think he stealing $$$. His bat from the left side has slowed down and there are 2 or 3 holes in his swing that pitchers can attach and get an easy out.
Did all the Chipper lovers realize that Jeff Francoeur and a higher Batting Average and drove in more runs than Chipper last season—look it up.

Who cares?
Sports is no longer the main foucus of “professional sports.” Its entertainment. The equipment, players and rules have been juiced for the entertainment value. Admittedly professional baseball is still two steps above professional wrestling; but the NFL and the NBA are only one step above.

For all of you die hard chipper haters tell me who is going to play third or second or SS if Chipper retired tomorrow. There really isn’t anyone. You could try to use noodle are Glaus over there but I bet that would last for about a month and then there goes that shoulder again. Sure Prado could move over but now you are short a second baseman who is going to fill that hole? If Chipper retired tomorrow we have 0 shot and the playoffs.

Seriously he is one year removed from the batting title in 08. A guy cant have an off year. I remember back in 04 when he struggled so bad and everyone was calling for him to be traded said his career in ATL was over and he was past his prime so one and so one. Here again we have one down season and it is the same ol story everyone is calling for his head. Jeez give the guy a chance.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. The Braves are my team, win or lose. I think Chipper just might retire next year after Bobby is gone. Whether he manages or not is up to someone besides me but I would not be opposed to it. What ever he does, I hope it is with the Braves if it is in baseball. LOVE MY BRAVOS!!

I lived in South GA, & at Grandma’s, I wasn’t allowed to watch Dallas on Friday nites in the late 70’s/80’s, because the ALL the braves’ games were televised on TBS (THOSE were the days); I was 8, & my 5′0″, 90 lb. Grandma had a rule. She was a fan, & for that 2-3 hours so were you. She taught me what it was to be a fan.
Barring any medical illness, she watched or listened to every game, every season, through every players strike, & every rain delay, from the time they came to Atlanta in ‘66(?) or ‘67(?) until she passed on my baby bro’s b’day right after the Braves lost the NLCS in 2003. It was the only thing in the last 6 months of her life that her mind could comprehend (because of the surgeries).
Everyone here needs to take a moment to remember why this is called “America’s Favorite Passtime”, & why these guys were ‘America’s Team’.
I found in her things some of her yearly calendars; every game was marked with the other team’s name, both pitchers’ names, & the final score; she also recorded if we got ‘free baseball’ (that’s what Skip used to call extra innings for you VERY young folks who don’t have much use for the REAL old-timers like my 87-year old Grandma). My ‘95 World Series ball isn’t much, but it tells me that EVERYONE played the game; & the brevity of the spotlight doesn’t affect a true fan one way or the other.

Chipper has been great and easily in the HOF. However he has hit that age that players usually decline rapidly (see MIke Schmidt) for non steroid players and realistically he will not hit more than 20 homers. But he is such a great hitter that he can be more of a contact hitter that is over .300. Last year and this year we need some homers but we will need others to deliver these. Put Chipper in the number 2 spot and let him work counts and get on base. He still has very much value to our team.

Who cares if he retires… these high school games are much more entertaining , because they play for the fun of it …I haven’t cared about sports since they got to be so over paid when I was in high school in the late 40’s,living in Houston,Tx.. 2-3 of us kids used to ride home with a WORLD CHAMPION pitcher for the ST Louis Cardinnals,Who lived in our neighborhood….He worked in a machine shop during off season to make ends meet… He played ball because love of the game and he was a much better player than these today…
