Chris from the Rock — not to mince words, but Heyman’s tweet says, “Braves, Reds could be in mix for Garrett Anderson.” Sounds to me like speculation, and I’d say it’s one of those rumors that you probably don’t need to worry at all about coming true.

Also, N8, here’s a list of other highly anticipated top prospects since 1990…

Chipper Jones (1993)
Alex Rodriquez (1995)
Andruw Jones (1996-1997)
Vladimir Guerrero (#2 in 1997 behind Andruw)
Josh Beckett (2002)
Mark Teixiera (2003)
Joe Mauer (2004-2005)

I think all those guys have done pretty well, what do you think? So why not be excited about the possibilities. Otherwise you’re just Randy Quaid from Major League.

While Brasky is funny. “Ballgame” is growing on me. It would even make for some fun commercials for upcoming Braves games.

Imagine the scene. It shows the Dodgers players getting off the bus at Turner Field, all happy and excited. Cut to next scene in the visitors clubhouse and they’re still all happy, anticipating game time. Next scene is them walkin from the tunnel into the dugout where the lineup card is posted, and a couple players moan and groan, bowing their heads in disbelief.

Then it cuts to Heyward walking by their dugout with a bat on his shoulder, nodding with sarcasm, saying “That’s right boys”, and then it flips back to those same Dodgers players looking at eachother and simultaneously say: “BALLGAME!”

I love it. Count me in. That’s what I’m calling him from this day forward. Doesn’t mean much. I think I was in the group that tried to call Mike Gonzalez “Cobra” and that didn’t stick either. But for now, I’m sold.

Who’s with me?

DOB…

You either catch a little criticism or praise for your work here. I am surely appreciative for all that you do. Regardless of the fact that you are compensated, I feel as though you go above and beyond for us Braves fans. Can’t thank you enough for the endless amounts of blogging/information you provide. Keep it up brother.

Do you see it as a possibility of Schafer either winning a job out of ST or coming up mid-season to take over center and move Nate to LF? I know you have been asked before what his chances are, but just seeing if this remains possible despite having both the Melk-man and Matty D. Also, how has Melky looked since arriving? Has he fit in with the group? Coming from such a group of high profile players, I wonder how he will fit in…maybe Prado will be his boy?

Thanks again

dpelfrey Are you really trying to sell me on Heyward? I was ready to call him up last June. LOL!

I’m not neccesarily saying that 5 years from now Heyward won’t be a superstar. I expect him to be. But the two points I’m making are that no matter how good he WILL be, he’s not going to have that impact that soon, in all likelihood. Maybe he will. Who knows? But look at that list you gave me. Pretty much every one of those guys took 3-4 years to even remotely resemble the guys you’re talking about.

Is this blog going to still be patient with Jason Heyward in 2014 if he’s not putting up Pujols numbers? After all, the Braves choosing to go with him, might have cost us Johnny Damon? (eyes rolling).

The second point, is that if Heyward ends up being a consistant GG caliber outfielder, while only hitting around 25-35 HR for the next decade (not Pujols like), we shouldn’t be bummed that he didn’t break every record set by guys before him.

I just have the feeling that some bloggers are expecting him to drop 40 bombs this year and carry this team to October. Chipper Jones had 23 HR and 86 RBI as a rookie (hitting in the 3-hole with Fred McGriff and David Justice protecting him). Heyward likely will be at the bottom of the order with the Melky/Diaz platoon or the pitcher protecting him.

23 HR and 86 RBI would be an OUTSTANDING season, all things considered.

Red tide: [Tampa]Equipment/home clubhouse manager Chris Westmoreland is looking a little red these days, the price of his favorite Florida Gators losing the SEC football title game to RHP Lance Cormier’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Westmoreland has to wear Alabama gear to and from the complex all spring, and his office will be decorated with an Alabama flag and a poster-sized photo of Tim Tebow crying on the sideline.
