GOOD NEWS FOR BRAVES: Jurrjens’ MRI looks great, only some mild inflammation. Should be able to start throwing program in about a week, just needs some physical therapy, etc.
Rotator cuff and labrum looked normal, no tissue damage or anything else. Just a little inflammation from resumption of throwing and a little bit of an awkward throw that he made last week.
owl hunter, nomar had very similar OPS to garrett anderson last year. as a guy who still hits for pretty good average, i think he would be ok as a 3rd string back up and bat off the bench. he is almost a versatile in the field and would give you more with the bat than other options like joe thurston or diory hernandez.
Somone posted a pretty pessimistic one upthread about how the MRI will be negative, JJ will nonetheless have decreased velocity in the pre-season, will struggle early on and then go on to have season ending surgery before the all-star break. DOB promptly slapped his hand for it, but I have to admit, that is definitely my fear as well. How many guys have started complaining about some soreness some place and then ended up with surgery (I think Mike Gonzalez is a good example).
Question now – will the Braves shut him down for a while or take any other precautions?
Thanks TnPaul, I have seen O Brother Where Art Thou? and Burn After Reading but I forgot to mention them. I will defintely check out some of those others though.
DAP, I guess, but do we really want to spend 1mil on him (assuming that’s what it will take)? I know it doesn’t sound like much, but if he fails, we eat that money, and that could hamper in-season deals. I’ve heard that he may be retiring anyway.
owl hunter– I’d be willing to bet a lot of those “crazy” people posting on Bradley’s blogs are the same positive fans posting here on o’brien’s. They’re just using different names.
Good news on JJ. I think he’ll be fine, although I have nothing to base that on, as I am not a doctor, team official, or confidant. I think everyone has soreness when they’re getting back to business. With JJ’s value, the Braves were smart to take the precaution. At least we’re not the Mets. They probably would have accused him of lying.
As DAP said, you’re missing a second middle-infield backup, which Bobby always carries. That could be Joe Thurston; I think that’s why Braves signed him this winter, with that in mind more than Gwinnett. But we’ll see.
LOL, remember Jeff Treadway, Rafael Belliard, etc.? In ‘95 Jeff Blauser got hurt and Belliard carried us to the ’ship!

I was just curious. It’s possible, I guess. I admit I threw up in my mouth a little when I saw the original MRI news, but people over there we’re acting as though we need to fire Wren, gut the team, and wait til ‘14. It seems a little less reactionary over here.
Have to agree with o’brien here– it’s pretty big time news because in my eyes there was no more consistant pitcher on the braves last year than jj. Game in,game out HE was the one giving you so many innings and chances to win.
Even hanson and javy weren’t as consistant and that’s sayin something.
owl hunter but do we really want to spend 1mil on him (assuming that’s what it will take)?
yeah, i dont know. im not saying the braves MUST sign him. no one who is going to fill the 25th spot on your roster is a must have. i just dont think he is totally washed up, especially in a limited role for a team.
Now that we can all exhale re: JJ I have a question about Damon. Let me see if I have my facts right. News comes out that the Braves have made an offer to Damon. Then, several other teams make offers (though we do not know for how much). Then, John Schurholtz is on XM radio saying that Wren is engaged in talks with Damon’s people. Since that time, there has been no news.
DOB, do you think the Braves made a counter offer? All of the recent news about Damon involves the Chisox and Tigers, but do you get the sense that the Braves are still engaged?
who knows anything about damon. i dont trust anyones report anymore. until i see it come out on the bottom of espn that johhny damon signs with whoever. thats when i will believe it.
owl hunter– they also have a pretty negative guy heading things over there, mark bradley. He won’t correct them and give a good outlook on things like o’brien does here. If anything–bradley feeds their anger.
koolmap, there’s always a few Braves position players in camp several days before they’re due, usually guys who live down in Florida like Matt Diaz and Schafer (who lives here now, but whose parents live real close to Dark Star, just down the road in Haines City).
Chipper always goes down early, at least a few days.
dmack: I’ve got no indication of a counter-offer made by Braves, not in my recent discussions with Boras (and obviously no indication from Braves, who aren’t talking about it).
It is great news about JJ, but the law of average will catch up to us. We will have a starter go down at some point this season, hopefully Medlen can be a strong substitute for us, later in the season we could possibly even use Minor.
Now all those fans that thought the world was ending can breath a sigh of relief about JJ. Seemed like everybody went nuts there for a bit over something the braves obviously weren’t that worried about.
From FRANK WREN about Jurrjens MRI: “We expected the tests to be normal and we were not concerned. We always try to err on the side if caution when treating our players and use these types of tests to pinpoint the diagnosis to give them the specific treatment necessary.”

DOB, the reporter that you spoke to from the Tampa market about MFIKY, was that Mark Topkin? (2 papers in this market). Because I live down here and I’ll totally work on getting that name to stick. I’ll make a t-shirt
DOB, I was just reading the ESPN fantasy projections for this year and it shows Prado hitting 9 dingers. What are the chances of his BP power showing up in the HR column? Is he capable of 15 or 20?
I have to admit that I’m not totally relieved by the news that JJ’s MRI looks ok. We need to see whether his shoulder’s getting better after rest and whether it lingers. The shadow of MG and TH last couple of years, where the docs could not detect anything wrong but the players could not perform well, just doesn’t go away easily.
Frank from KS, If Damon is not going to happen, it looks as though it won’t but you never know…then I would mind throwing some money in Nomar’s direction for a bench role. Would be serviceable off bench and can play first, third, and a little short. I’m sure he could persuade Sammons to give up # 5.
MDbrave, yes but they did detect something wrong. He has shoulder inflammation, which isn’t really a cause for concern, it’s usual this time of year. Or any time for these guys, at that matter. If I remember correctly, Kawakami had some at one point last year.
The shadow of MG and TH last couple of years, where the docs could not detect anything wrong but the players could not perform well, just doesn’t go away easily.
Live in fear, and fear is your life. Who needs that?
I mean, if the MRI had shown some massive damage, you would have believed that, yes? Why is the procedure any less credible because the news is good, LOL?
I now imagine that when Jurrjens comes back to earth a little this year on his BABIP and stranded runners, we’ll hear lots of doomsayers bringing up this MRI from February, notioning that “I don’t care what the MRI said, the kid’s not right!” But I’m just guessing here.
[Nomah] Would be serviceable off bench and can play first, third, and a little short.
How many more guys who can back up the corners do the Braves need, LOL? They need somebody who can back up 2B and SS, other than Infante. 6 is not going into the season with just one extra middle infielder; at least, he hasn’t previously.
And whoever that guy might be, he’s going to suck up all of about 120 PAs next season. Paying that roster position more than the minimum is probably not too economically smart.
It’s concern, not fear. There’s a difference there. Besides, your remarks disregards the common sense that when a diagnostic result is positive, i.e. showing damages, etc, of course I, and you, should believe it, but when it’s negative, the only conclusion is it’s inconclusive. Is that not true in the cases of MG and TH?
scoots And whoever that guy might be, he’s going to suck up all of about 120 PAs next season. Paying that roster position more than the minimum is probably not too economically smart.
you are right about this. i vote for diory hernandez to get the 25th spot.
It nice to see that Jair really cares about pitching. He was uneasy the past couple days,he only is worried because he cares. Gonna be a stud for years.
BigBadBrave: A lot of the the Curacao minor and major leaguers, past and present, get together to play some casual games before they report to spring training. Not a big deal. Certainly nothing like the risks involved in even the shortest commitment to winter ball.
but when [the MRI is] negative, the only conclusion is it’s inconclusive.
I’d hate to think it’s inconclusive when my doc tells me, “No, you don’t have prostate cancer.”, because, bubba, I won’t be asking for any second opinions. Or for the procedure that would go with them, LOL.
Can’t believe I hadn’t heard more about or watched an episode of new FX show Archer, until I saw it last night on OnDemand. Hilarious. Entirely politically incorrect and certainly offensive to many, I’m sure. I really liked it. Never been big on animated shows, but this joins a list of strong ones — Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, and of course The Simpsons.
BigBadBrave: Not sure about Andruw, but doubtful since he’s lived in Atlanta for many years.
By the way, heard this about Andruw: He’s lost about 20 or more pounds this winter. Spent some time at training facility that Boras operates for his clients in Newport Beach, Calif.
Matt Young played some 2B, but I don’t think he can play shortstop, so I would imagine Conrad & Thurston would have the upper hand in that competition. The Braves gave Conrad a lot of work at short last year in Gwinnett, so I think they definitely had him in mind for this role at the end of the last year. But now that they’ve signed Thurston, I would imagine the job is his to lose, particularly considering he has more mlb experience.
Andy, true that on the Brookster’s name, LOL. No talent worthy of it, but, still…
There were great baseball names in winter ball a couple of years ago, I mean, even moreso than usual. Not that I can remember any of them now, naturally.
DAP, I did. What’s your brain telling you? About half way through that episode, I told my wife that they better start going somewhere with it. Because I expected this season to be non-stop action and answers and it’s been pretty damn slow so far.
The last portion of the episode with Sawyer and Locke (you know what I mean), picked up the pace a bit. I have the feeling it should start picking up soon. I hope, anyhow.
