Jurrjens shoulder is hurting??? How in the hell could the Braves front office have NOT known about this before they traded Vazquez for a bag of balls?? Really, really poor front office work by this franchise.
“…they traded Vazquez for a bag of balls” – Matt
Come on dude. We upgraded the pen by swapping Boone Logan for Mike Dunn in the deal. Plus we got Melky and Arodys Vizcaino, the Yankees’ third-best prospect. The Braves also received $500,000 in the deal. Not exactly a bag of balls.
I would want to sign Smoltz in the middle of the season to be a one inning reliever. If he were able to stay health and regain that fastball, we could have a valuable weapon in the playoffs.
uga-brave…”tim hudson? check out his one postseason with the braves. 13 ip’s 13 hits 6 bb’s one hbp, eight k’s. dont love him or hate him but i would never trust him in a big game.”
So you’re saying Game 4 in that division series wasn’t a big game. Here’s his line from that one…7 IP, 6H, 3 ER, 1BB, 5 K…He left in the 8th inning with a 5-1 lead, nobody out and two runners on. The two runners reached on a walk and an infield hit. Bottom line, he pitched great in a big elimination game. It was Farnsworth that blew that one giving up the taters to Berkman and Ausmus. You’re right that he wasn’t good in Game 1, when he couldn’t throw a strike. But the man showed up in Game 4, so give him some credit.
I am sure this has already been mentioned, but I just wanted to bring it up again.
This is about Johnny Damon and the Tigers
Has anyone seen the report from John Paul Morosi that said the “sides have exchanged proposals within the last several days, but the source said a deal is not yet imminent.”
Does Boras really think he has bargaining power when the Tigers know what the other teams proposed? How on earth does he think he can get more money from the Tigers when they are the ones practically bidding against themselves? Boras is going to cost Johnny yet another team with his greed.
Let’s Go Bravos!, there was no way for Wren to predict that a 23 year old pitcher was going to need an MRI before spring training started. What the heck was he supposed to do, hold on to all of his pitchers and not sign Troy Glaus or Hinske just in the off chance that one of his starters MIGHT go down?? You cant GM that way, you just cant.
Matt–Guess Frank Wren was supposed to tell the Yankees when they reached the trade agreement, “OK, but hold on, gotta call everyone on our roster and make sure they haven’t bumped their toes or smacked their funny bone’s on anything first.” Maybe you should get a clue before coming on and starting your ranting….oh, nevermind, I know that would be too much effort.
Matt, because apparently Jurrjens did this in the last few weeks, and as you know, or at least I hope you know, Vazquez was traded almost 2 months ago. THATS HOW!!!
Wren is going to look pretty dumb for trading Vasquez for a backup outfielder!
You people really need to stop with this dumb “Vasquez for a fourth outfielder” nonsense. I guess the Rangers fans should be raising heck since their team traded Tex for Salty (a mediocre catcher) and Harrison (a fourth starter at best). Never mind the other prospects in the deal right?
All you morons that say Frank is going to look like a big idiot IF, and thats a big IF, Jurrjens goes down are just that, MORONS!!!! How the heck is Frank supposed to know that one of his young starters might have problems, especially when it just happened in the past few weeks?? Frank cannot predict when someone is going to get injured. So IF Jurrjens goes down, Frank looks for another pitcher to fill the spot, either from within or maybe he signs Smoltz and puts him in the pen as long relief and lets Medlen start. There are many ways he can go with this, so everyone just needs to chill.
Does anyone think that Hanson is not capable of pitching at 3, if indeed Jurrjens does have a problem? Teams look to play .500 ball in the starts made by the 4 and 5 starters, and I’m pretty sure that Kawakami and whoever can handle that. It’s the top 3 starters who count when it comes to piling up the W/L record, and there’s nothing wrong with Hudson, Lowe, and Hanson fronting the rotation.
Jurrjens out would simply mean that the margin of error just got thinner. Unfortunately, Braves’ margin is already pretty thin, so let’s hope it’s just early-spring soreness.
JJJ going down would put a lot of pressure on Hanson. I think there would be big ripples coming off of this one.
My biggest fear would be that they don’t find anything right off and he ends up having a Soriano like 2008 where they never could figure out exactly what it was until the year was about over. This is my gut, and I am normally an eternal optimist, but this feels worst than it sounds. Somebody please talk me off the ledge this morning.
Considering that the Braves are anemic at the plate, it does seem that Braves management was a little stupid in letting Xavier Vasquez go knowing that a pitcher is only a pitch away from going down to injury. JJ threw his arm out last year trying to protect a one run lead or a tie score. Do any of you stat hounds on this blog know how many times JJ and Xavier went into the 5th with more than a one run lead. Also how many starts, innings pitched and pitches made did they have. Hanson could be next if Hudson’s arm goes south again. Now we have Billy “sick arm” in the bull pen. You can never have too much pitching especially with a lineup having no speed and no power.Neither Glaus nor Damon can solve this problem. Its too early for Heyward to take on this role. Its going to be a long year.
Kick Arse – Looks like Top Chef Contestant Kevin Gillespie is opeing a BBQ joint soon. He was my favorite on the show last season and seems to really know his meat. Looking forward to this….
I don’t want to believe JJ did significant damage to his shoulder throwing a ball underhanded. My guess is they find a small muscle strain and shut him down for a few weeks, making him not ready for opening day. Medlen, get ready for some quality time on the mound.
Hanson could be next if Hudson’s arm goes south again.
Well, I guess you’ll have to color me stupid, since I’m having trouble figuring out the correlation between Hanson’s run support and Hudson’s elbow. But, I’m sure it’s there, right in front of me.
Please, no politics dude. I am only giving my opinion about the Braves. I hope that I am wrong. Performance will present the true measure of their success or failure.
My point was that I hope the Braves do not overwork Hanson if JJ and Hudson go down. Also,I believe that the bull pen with Billy “Sick Arm” will be much worse than last year. If the pitching is less than last year, how will the Braves win at least the same number of games and get into the playoffs? I don’t see it unless the ball bounces in their favor all year. You need talent and luck to make the playoffs.
It’s sad to say, but everyone knows what’s going to happen here.
DOB will have an update later in the week that says Jurrjens MRI came out clean and it’s just a bout of preseason tendinitis. Then, Jurrjens will struggle all spring and show decreased velocity. He’ll battle all April and look less than his normal self. In May, he’ll hit the DL and later end up having surgery.
The way things have gone for the Braves the last few years, can anyone really be shocked with the above scenario?
ObamaBrave, it does matter because last I checked, we never had a player named Xavier Vazquez. And I could understand if you said it once, but you said it twice in the same post, so I was curious as to who you thought Xavier Vazquez was.
Y’all (at least the Doom and Gloomers) – Even without Jurrjens in the rotation (which is hardly a given – pitchers get twinges in shoulders all the time -especially very early in the season) only he Giants still have as deep a rotation (and maybe not AS deep) as the Braves.
Losing Jurrjens woulkdn’t be a good thing, mind you, but I wouldn’t feel too bad moving up Lowe, Hudson and Hanson (don’t worry about the pressure – I’m sure the kid would welcome it) and leaving the 4-5 slots to KK and Medlen (or maybe Minor shows he’s ready). It’s not as if they were going to move JoJo to number two in the rotation or anything.
The Grinch called me when he herd this last night and what we both figured was that the Braves season , with or without Jurrjens, is much more contingent upon Glaus and Chipper’s performances than a somewhat less deep pitching staff.
Besides, we could always run right out and offer Smoltz what we offered Damon, right?
And WTF-maybe JJ misses no time at all. Don’t commit suicide quite yet. Or as our friend HIllbilly might say- “Careful with that axe, Eugene.”
McFann – I caught my first episode of “Leave it to Beaver” the other day. The whole plot was centered around Beaver feeling guilty for making a funny face in his class picture. He got a moral and a grounding at the end, and everything was right.
I was thinking about how much this differs from today’s shows. You have Maury giving paternety tests to cross dressers, they’re scoping out dead bodies on CSI…but Beav, well that little rascal made a goofy face.
Xavier Vazquez was a Spanish explorer that discovered west coast of Hispaniola. He was also the first to successfully cultivate the same yeast that eventually brought us the fine product Vegemite.
RHR-If not Anders, that Dude Reyes 2010 will be here shortly trying to convince himself that JJ’s absence would naturally equate to the Mets winning the division.
I think I would have noticed a guy in a wheelchair pitching with his mind last year. Guess I wasn’t paying attention. Must’ve been when Chip was announcing.
JJ’s injury sounds bad. I tore up my shoulder five years ago. Pain flipping underhanded was a definite symptom. I shredded my bicep tendon and tore my RC. Nasty. Required surgery. It was six months before I could swing a golf club.
I feel much better about this than when a pitcher experiences pain in his elbow/forearm during the season. Let us hope for the best. I think JJ will be fine.
Funny! You use the prez’s name in your screen name, and I make a statement that I hope he does better with the economy (not negative or political at all) than you are predicting for the Braves; and you have the nerve to tell me to not get political???? Are you frickin’ kidding me?
mattJurrjens shoulder is hurting??? How in the hell could the Braves front office have NOT known about this before they traded Vazquez for a bag of balls??
seeing as how that trade (for one of the top minor league pitchers in baseball, by the way) was months ago, maybe jurjens shoulder wasnt hurting then. but youre right. really good front offices see the future.
It’s sad to say, but everyone knows what’s going to happen here.
DOB will have an update later in the week that says Jurrjens MRI came out clean and it’s just a bout of preseason tendinitis. Then, Jurrjens will struggle all spring and show decreased velocity. I don’t like shoulder soreness. But as Lew quoted before, I will be Eugene and put the ax down. However, I am not a pessimist but when it comes to pitchers and shoulder soreness…. Too early for the Smoltz speculation???? If JJ does turn out to have a significant problem in a week or two, bet on plenty of it….
jeffrey dI caught my first episode of “Leave it to Beaver” the other day.
Whoo-hoo! Good show, eh?
Yeah, it’s so different from what they’re making these days…that’s what makes it so good! Except sometimes it’s irritating when Beaver does something bad and everybody blames it on Ward. I mean, OK, so sometimes it cann be his fault a little, but Beaver’s old enough to take responsibility for his own actions, no?
Sounds like you caught a good one, though (well, they’re all good…all the ones I’ve seen, anyway)…can’t remember if I’ve seen that one. They need to put the rest of the seasons out on DVD.
I’ve got an 11 a.m. training class at office (gotta get hours in when I can before season begins), so don’t assume absence in next 90 minutes or so means something is brewing or anything like that. I mean, it could be, but my absence from blog won’t have anything to do with it. Know what I’m saying?
Jurrjens has a sore shoulder. No one’s said anything about a blown a shoulder. He’s goin to have an MRI as a precaution, not because he had major pain and an inability to throw.
Years ago, the trainers would have iced down Jurrjens’ shoulder and kept him from throwing for 48 hours. These days, because teams have so much invest in their talent, a twinge becomes a big deal.
Thanks! Be kinda like me adding something like “Dave Ramsey” to my moniker, then all the folks that liked to spend with wreckless abandon would be offended, huh.
Chuck-I fully expect some of the less rational Denizens to start suggesting Smoltz any time now. I don’t think we even need to think about going out and getting more pitching. We have plenty – even without Jurrjens, who in case some of y’all haven’t noticed, hasn’t even missed a Spring Training start yet.
I wonder how many shoulder/elbow twinges we never even hear about?
Oh sweet…I just found out that Shout! Factory (the company that’s putting out the “Mister Ed” DVDs) is preparing a June 15th release of season 3 of Leave It To Beaver!
It is amazing the quality of the 25% on this blog who have something in this blog to offer, and the 75% who offer only ignorance. Count me in the one you wish.
Oooohhhh…….this “training” must include either a) how to interview Johnny Damon, b) how to report on shoulder surgery, and/or c) how to frame the return of John Smoltz to the Atlanta Braves. Something is DEFINITELY going down…what is DOB????
McFann-I watched all the Leave It To Beaver episodes when they originally came out. They used to be on right before The Mickey Mouse Club. We’d watch them every afternoon after my sister and I got back from elementary school.
free agent pitchers left; paul byrd, mike hampton, livan hernandez, braden looper, pedro martinez, jason schmidt, john smoltz, brett tomko, chien-ming wang, jarrod washburn, joel biemel, kiko calero, ron mahay, mike mcdougal, chan ho park, jason isringhausen, and russ springer. plenty of options if jurrjins is out significant time and you need to add a roster spot to either bullpen help (medlen gets starter spot) or just adding another starter

JJ’s injury sounds bad. I tore up my shoulder five years ago. Pain flipping underhanded was a definite symptom. I shredded my bicep tendon and tore my RC. Nasty. Required surgery. It was six months before I could swing a golf club.

seeing as how that trade (for one of the top minor league pitchers in baseball, by the way) was months ago, maybe jurjens shoulder wasnt hurting then. but youre right. really good front offices see the future.

I wonder how many shoulder/elbow twinges we never even hear about?

free agent pitchers left; paul byrd, mike hampton, livan hernandez, braden looper, pedro martinez, jason schmidt, john smoltz, brett tomko, chien-ming wang, jarrod washburn, joel biemel, kiko calero, ron mahay, mike mcdougal, chan ho park, jason isringhausen, and russ springer. plenty of options if jurrjins is out significant time and you need to add a roster spot to either bullpen help (medlen gets starter spot) or just adding another starter
