From Page 38 where ya’ll were talking about the GM/Ford vs. Imports. At the age of 38, I’ve owned 1 Ford (’82 EXP – okay I was 17 and stupid), 1 Toyota (’83 Celica – great little car – had almost 200K on it when it died), 2 Pontiacs (’91 Sunbird and an ‘06 G6 GT); 2 Chevrolets (’97 Monte Carlo Z34 and a 2001 SS Monte). The EXP was a dog, but got me through my senior year in HS. The Celica – I paid $3K for it with 106K miles. Drove that car for another 3 years before the head blew up. Still, loved that little car. The Sunbird was a good little car that I drove from 1993 to 1997. Yeah, it needed work on it then, but it was still running. With the 1997 Monte, I had to have the tran rebuilt at less than 100K miles. Traded it later for the 2001, which had front end problems. Traded that for the G6 – shortest time I owned a car was with this one. Between January and June 2008, I put almost $1,000 into the front end of that car. Got it in November ‘05 and traded in July ‘08. Got a Nissan Altima Coupe (2008) and it has been great. Basically, all my GMs (except the Sunbird) had poor front end designs, not to mention the troubles with front wheel drive in cars that size. I loved them but for those problems.

Not saying I’d never own a GM or Ford (hubby is a Chevy man, so Ford is not likely), but right now GM is not impressing me all that much. Interested to see how well the new Camaro holds up, ’cause that’s the only thing GM makes that I truly am interested in. Would rather pick up a ‘71 Challenger convertible for my hubby to restore for me. ;) @ Heath

I can’t wait for spring training to begin! The Braves managed to trade their best pitcher and still not add the outfield power bat they needed! What’s not to be excited about? The fans are going to be part of a grand experiment. Wren and company are actually going to see if the act of telling the world that they have a fine ballclub will actually get them into the playoffs! Who needs actual personnel upgrades? All you gotta do is tell the media and fans that your team is better and you’re on your way to taking champagne baths in October.

DOB,

Can you find out if the Braves have submitted a second offer to Damon? Or, are they sticking with the original offer, whatever it was, and letting him pick who he wants to play for?

I bet Damon picks his team today. At his age I and coming off a great season I cannot imagine him turning down a 2 yr/14m deal. That’s not what Boras guys do if I remember correctly. But of course ou can always look at Bobby Abreu who took a 5m 1 yr deal and parlayed it into a 2 yr/18m deal the next year…and he is only 1 year younger than JD.

I also wonder if the Union would frown against a guy taking a 1 yr deal when he was offered a good 2 yr deal.

Interesting that we haven’t heard Damon has signed yet. I wonder if he’s weighing like this: “Hm, $7M to play in Detroit, one of the most depressed areas in the country, or $4M to play in Atlanta, in the last year of Bobby Cox’s illustrious management career and a chance to at least make a run for the title. What to do, what to do?” $ on the left hand, potential for glory on the right.”

Gil,

Funny Diamond Duck story. I moved away from Richmond a couple of years ago.. but when I was there, one day at work I had an encounter.

I was working (fairly big corporate campus) and heading off to a meeting. I waited for the elevator and when the doors open, there was just one person on the elevator (right in the middle of the day)… that one person(?) was Diamond Duck. We both followed proper elevator ettiquette and didn’t speak to or even look at each other. When I got off of the elevator, I was like what the what???

You’re correct that it would probably be an issue with them. But just once I’d love for a client to tell the Union, Scott Boras, and anybody else who asked that he sure as **** isn’t going to use his free agency opportunity to move to Detroit.

Who knows what Damon’s personal situation is, but if he’s been smart with his money he should have maybe 30 to 50 million just sitting in the bank and should be incredibly comfortable making this decision based on enjoying life not more money.

Even with his great abilty, Heyward has a couple of strikes against him for next season: He is only 20, has very little experience in the high minors, and most significant of all – would be playing under a manager who is terrible relating to the continued development of young potential hitting stars – in terms of providign necessary instruction, disipline, emphasis, procedures etc. Andruw Jones being a prime example.

Giving Damon 14 million for 2 years is nothing compared to the Dodger GM signing Andruw for 18 million for two years a few years ago. Some hours ago, the view was expressed by some on the Board that Tom Glavine would have difficulty sitting in management’s position when it comes to negotiating with players, and DOB agreed. Take it from someone who worked for a labor union for many years, you are very likely wrong. My experience is that the most scary folks for management are those who have to prove themselves because they were formerly the union reps or even stewards. The reality is that the folks in these positions are usually the most respected of the workers, and Glav is likely the most respected guy around. Trust me that when he tells a pitcher about the many years he spent taking a lot less and pitching every time his turn came despite pain and winning 300 games without the greatest stuff, he will be a genuine threat to shame them into taking less money. Also, these folks often feel they have to show management that they are really now on the side of management, and they even have a tendency to overdo it to prove themselves. And when the workers sometimes respond to this by characterizing them as the enemy, they then often react by retrenching even further into a hardline position. One further note as an example– during my time at Harvard in a program for trade unionists, I led a mock negotiation with Business School MBAs, where my side was management and their side was the union. We slaughtered them, as we knew all we had to do was say “No”.

Don, comparing with Andruw does not make your point, he hit 25 or more homers every year from 1998-2007, with a high of 51 in 2005 (so he got better over the period), he was a 5 time all star (most coming later in those years) and won 10 Gold Gloves, then his performances fell off a cliff that no coach anywhere has been able to resolve, cannot blame Cox or Pendleton for that.

I watched Glavine pitch his last rehab start for Gwinnett. Wren was also in the stands as he wanted to make that decision based on what he personally saw and not based on what a scout saw.

Glavine was knocked all over the place that day. Had it not been for 4 DP’s the results would have been much worse. It was obvious he was finished. I was not surprised one bit when Wren released him a few days later. He still collected $1 million dollars just for rehabbing. It was time to cut the cord. Had Wren waited another day they would have owed Glavine another million.

Wren’s job is to run the business of the club. He did his job.

Glavine might be a great GM someday. I thought it was interesting reading that Feinstein book about Glavine and Mussina a while back that Kasten found it remarkable that Glavine was very conservative politically but was so pro-union in the labor battles, while Kasten was so liberal politically, but so pro-management in the labor squabbles. Unless Glavine is really just that hardcore about union principles, I think he’d be as hardlined and cutthroat about money from the management perspective as he was from the player perspective. Dude’s likely too competitive to be any other way. Glavine as the GM, Maddux as the manager sounds like a plan.

I have to agree 100 percent. I work in a business where I am represented by agents. I’ve never signed a contract that they negotiated for me that I thought was unfair, or where I felt I was getting a bad deal.

While I _have_ on occasion “left money on the table,” there was always something else involved that make it worth doing … rights came back to me after a decent amount of time, I get to keep living in Atlanta, etc. In any case, I have great agents that have generally gotten me what I want, or at very least ensured that I am treated fairly.

My agents have a great rep on both sides of the table. I like to hope that some of that rubs off on me by association. There’s something to be said about being judged by the company you keep, whether it’s fair or not.

Fun to contemplate the way the agents play the rumor mill. These days, there are so many web sites and so many guys in the baseball arena that have the ability to put out stories that may not be true, that it would not be surprising that someday we may hear about a payola scandal of sorts. This is what’s on MLBTR .. updated about 10 minutes ago.

Tigers owner Mike Ilitch apparently is adding his personal touch to the Johnny Damon negotiations.

A report on FoxSports.com says Ilitch, who does not often get involved in player negotiations, has authorized a two-year, $14 million offer to Damon.

ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney tweeted Thursday that “the overwhelming expectation among some executives involved in the Johnny Damon bidding is that he will wind up with Tigers.”

The Damon saga appears to be nearing the finish line Thursday, as Damon tries to choose from several offers far lower than the two-year, $20 million deal he and agent Scott Boras have been seeking, reports ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark.

Two sources told ESPN.com that the Tigers have made the largest offer, amid speculation around the industry that that bid is in the range of one year for $7 million. There were indications the sides were still discussing a possible two-year deal. But even the Tigers’ one-year offer appears to be the biggest offer on the table.

The Braves and Rays have also remained in the bidding, with both teams talking about one-year contracts for fewer total dollars than the Tigers’ offer. MLB.com reported that the Braves’ offer was for less than $4 million.

The White Sox reportedly have surfaced in the Damon chase, but Joe Cowley of the Sun-Times says GM Ken Williams could be trying to drive up the price of Damon to a division rival.

Ahh..found it on the espn home page. Weird.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the kind of all-out spinning that is going on with the Johnny Damon negotiations. The White Sox are reported to be in the negotiations … but maybe they’re not really in them at all, except for the purpose of due diligence, as Joe Cowley writes; Kenny Williams might be playing a game of chess.

Along the way Thursday, I was told by someone in baseball that he was asked to leak word of a particular two-year offer to Damon — to stir the pot and artificially nudge those involved in the bidding.

It’ll be interesting to see, after the smoke clears, where the final numbers are on Damon. As of Thursday night, the wide expectation of rival executives was that Damon would wind up back with the Tigers.

Two incontrovertible facts could emerge from this:

A. Damon’s camp botched its negotiations with the Yankees. B. If, in fact, Damon actually gets a two-year, $14 million deal from the Tigers, in present-day value, then agent Scott Boras has done excellent work in drumming up something out of nothing, through his strategic lobbying in the Detroit newspapers.

Mike Ilitch is dipping into his own stash to try to lure Damon, writes John Lowe. Damon could hit first or second for the Tigers. Whether it is a one-year deal or a two-year deal, Boras’s special relationship seems to have led to something for the Tigers.

Damon’s negotiations are close to completion, writes Ken Davidoff.

Jeff R

Hmmm… I’ve read a couple of posts asking if Wren will counter the Tigers’ two-year, $14 million offer to Damon.

Only if Wren has rocks for brains. Why on earth would Wren commit that much time and even more money to snag Damon? He wouldn’t. The names Heyward and Schafer come to mind?

With or without Damon, if the Braves stay healthy, if key players perform up to expectations, the club will be in contention.

Hmm…I’ll have to try it again. Not that it matters a whole lot…I mean, if I’m away from our computer, I really have no need to Blog.

I hate trying to type with it…

I kinda do, too. It’s a pain–I hit the wrong letter too much…irritating!

but it takes a while (for me, I get annoyed when computer stuff doesn’t work instantly) to scroll down thru hundreds of comments as the page is loading.

Exactly.

JeffR-Maybe so, maybe not. He might be trying to push for a two year offer from the Braves. Boras is Machiavellian to the max in pursuit of the best deal. Anything he does could mean several things. Seems to me that if it were really the case, it wouldn’t have been reported and Damon would already have signed on the dotted line.

Then again, maybe not.

All you Georgians hoping for snow it looks like its going to be awhile, if at all. All that stuff you see on radar isn’t reaching the ground. Snow fall has only started in the most western sections of Alabama in the last hour or so. Haven’t seen a single flake here, nor in Birmingham, nor in Auburn. They’re still saying its coming, its just taking longer to get here than they anticipated.

So you mean when they cancelled schools yesterday they were reacting too quickly to weather forecasts which are often inaccurate? Color me surprised.

I don’t like Boras. (Mostly because it guarantees some of my favorite Braves players are going to leave.) But dang the guy has the magic touch. Damon went from a guy who might have to tak almost anything offered to a potential 2 year 14 mil offer.

Whatever Boras is feeding or getting the GMs to drink, I want some to use.

for some of these guys, getting the most amount of money isnt about the money. its bragging rights. its a pride thing. they see their salary as their value compared to other players. i really believe for some of them, actually HAVING the money is secondary to them.

notice a couple of braves who arent like that at all. chipper and huddy.

i blog from my itouch at times, when im only going to make short posts. i really had trouble getting to the comments on the blog for awhile. i think i found a way to trick the ajc mobile page (which sucks, by the way) into letting me into it.

There must not be any advisors in detroit, or their owner and boras has something going on on the side. How many times will you allow yourself to get burned over and over by the same guy? I mean I appreciate the fact the owner is willing to improve his club but really? is this an improvement? I think I could do a lot more with less, I’d think they would be better served to sign blalock if they need a lefty.

JeffR-That he is. However, I take nothing about his players and the contract negotiations as gospel until the Club holds their press conference. Anything else is just material for the pundits to indulge in their eternal quest for the ulitmate rumor.

Just in case anyone was wondering, Scott Boras has caused the snow to fall on the southeast. Up the ante Braves, or it’ll turn into a blizzard in the next couple of hours!

I speak the truth…..

Boras appeals to the natural stupidity and gullibility of the consumer. I relate it to grocery stores offering a buy one,get one free offer and customers flocking because they hear the word free. Duh,you Idiot, did you see the price of the first one? Boras would probably be a good salesman for H-ell.

Has anyone heard as to whether or not Rocco Baldeli has signed anywhere? That’s the player I wish the braves would sign, he’s still young and has a lot of potential when he’s in the lineup.

Arkansas Transplant-Yeah, the Tigers indulged in a spending frenzy a few years back Look where THAT got them. Can you say Dontrelle Willis? It had to be a deal based on the fact that Dombrowski liked DW from his time in Florida, but any sane human could easily see that DW was shot to hell two years before traveling north. Not sure if the inmates are running the show over there (see also the Renteria trade), but someone needs to get a healthy dose of reality. Then again-ain’t my money or my team. Wonder if we could interest them in JoJo Reyes for their top prospect?

while it may be debatable who the #1 college basketball team in the country is, there is no arguing who the #1 college basketball fans are. wow.

“The arrival of ESPN’s College GameDay in the Bluegrass has the True Blue Nation worked into a frenzy.

The show will broadcast from Rupp Arena Saturday morning prior to the game between the University of Kentucky and Tennessee.

ESPN should expect quite a welcome.

UK is hoping to shatter the record for a College GameDay taping. ESPN says that they don’t keep official attendance records, but officials estimate about 8,000 Jayhawk fans showed up in Kansas.

Kentucky has given out 23,000 tickets.

The doors at Rupp Arena will open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. ESPN will begin doing live look-ins during Sports Center at 10 a.m. GameDay begins at 11 a.m.

The Wildcats and Vols tip off at 9 p.m.”

Before we get too excited about Heyward and his great natural hitting talent for this season; remember how Bobby Cox failed to develop/wasted and failed to develop Andruw Jones – one of the greatest natural hitting talents in baseball history.

Just checked Baldelli’s sats-Dude has played in a max of 92 games since 04 (once-the rest come nowhere close to that) – missed 05 completely and only played 62 last year. Definitely not worth even aminor league contract, IMO.

It really amazes me what some of these supposably baseball savy people are thinking when they sign these players. There’s definitely more involved than we know, I’m sure there’s a lot of “if you scatch my back, I’ll scratch your back” negotiating going on.

Wow! What a interesting theory! So, it was Bobby Cox who ruined Andruw in his 11th full season with the Braves.

I wonder why he waited until the 11th season to work his magic over Andruw? Maybe the answer is that your full of bull sheet? Don-chathink?

Foxs is a bs site and ESPN parrots what they say. Compound ignorance nothing more.

If there was a one or two year deal on the table at 7mm per DET would have landed Damon yesterday and the press conference would already be over.

It’s all horesh-t.

He may go to another team but I suspect Wren is still very much in this and has the class and brains not to let anything he does into the public eye.

Even his supposed 4-5mm offer is likely a guesstimate.

Let the process unfold.
