Heyward is going to be pulled when tough pitchers are on the mound, never facing lefties, only washed up righties with no business being in the big leagues — TennesseePaul
Absolutely zero possibility this is true. They are not gonna bring him up until they believe he is ready to face ALL big league pitching. If the dont think he can hit Major League lefties and upper echelon righties, I guarantee he will be learning that skill in Gwinnett. When he goes to Atlanta, it will be to play EVERY day.
“I’ll kill any man here who makes Heyward bunt. And then I’ll kill their families and all their friends…alright, I’m coming out, so nobody better sign for a bunt.”
DOB…..would you happen to know if Banks and Shane are still appearing in/around Atlanta? We used to see them often and they always put on a good…FUNNY…..show.
Just googled Marshall Crenshaw. Impressive, now I got even more music to catch up to. DOB – Your music collection must be prolific. Your agent should get you a “radio theme show”, bet you could pull it off easily.
So I’ve been following all the posts on Camp Roger going on now, and every post I read weather it’s from DOB, Talking Chop, or the main Braves site and they always say that they run into Schafer who is taking batting practice and swings. They say his swing looks great and no pain in the wrist. If this kid is already working and catching up on all the time missed we shouldn’t be surprised to see him as soon as possible back with the big club. We already heard how hard he works from the Braves orginazation and I think the first couple of games were the real Schafer not the one after the injury. I got a good feeling this kid will redeem himself, and sooner rather than later.
Heyward was asked to bunt, once, just to take it easy on the other team. The pitcher put one down the middle and he squared up. 10 seconds later Heyward had the first bunt homer ever seen.
When he goes to Atlanta, it will be to play EVERY day.
I would agree very much. But I keep reading all this filler about sitting him on days the Braves face a lefty, or a tough lefty, or a tough pitcher. I don’t understand why either. The hype on this kid is so high, he should be capable of hitting off any pitcher. Plus his minor league splits show no weakness based on the hand of the pitcher.
DAP: “as far as heyward bunting….he should never bunt., but, that doesnt mean he sholdnt be able to.”
Yes. He should retain the ability to do so and the fan should retain the ability to curse the coach who told him to bunt. I’d disagree with calling for him to bunt, assuming of course he fulfills the hype and is indeed Samson, the Hulk, Ruth, and Goliath rolled up into one, but he should still be able to bunt. Nothings worse than watching a guy get the signal to bunt and having him botch it. Regardless of whether I agree with the call for that play at that time, I want that batter to be able to pull it off.
Curious about this not trying to be smart azz. Heyward batting 6 is up against a lefty that he has struck out against 3 times and Diaz is behind him and has gone 3-3 with a runner on 1st and no outs. Heyward shouldn’t bunt?

All this talk of BBQ…
I lament the demise of a great barbecue shack (and when I say shack, baby, do I mean shack) in my neck of the woods. Hoooge piles of barbecue on buns for their sandwiches. The small ones were the Miss B’s. The big uns were the Mr. B’s. As the proprietor, a wonderful man named Mr. Jesse, used to tell me as I dug into my two Mr. Bs every Friday afternoon — “ain’t but one other person who eats two Mr. Bs at one sitting, and that’s a big ole state troopuh.”
As much as I love the barbecue, I could never get into the eastern North Carolina vinegar-based sauce (just settle down, DOB … as much as movies and music get debated on here, not everyone is a fan of the Down East style. That must be an acquired taste, and I just never acquired it from my brief time living in that part of the world.)
Heyward batting 6 is up against a lefty that he has struck out against 3 times and Diaz is behind him and has gone 3-3 with a runner on 1st and no outs. Heyward shouldn’t bunt?
Heyward Ks three times in a game, bloggers will want him bunting at Gwinnett, LOL. And the answer is, no, he shouldn’t bunt in your scenario. Nobody else should, either.
No outs, a runner on, and a hot batter to follow, that’s a recipe for a big inning. No use squandering the opportunity by trading an out for a base; the hot batter gets walked, and the opportunity is left to the 8 hitter and the pitcher. Not exactly optimum.
dubstar,
Unfortonately no, they sold out quick! “The Rise and Fall of the Let’s Go Out Tonites” is my favorite album. Porably the reason I didn’t like Sycamore Meadows that much is because I didn’t see him perform any of those songs live. He connects with his audience better than anyone I’ve ever seen.

Ridiculous f’n scenario.
Heyward shouldn’t ever bunt, and neither should anyone else who isn’t a light hitter. The only people who should be bunting are pitchers and defensive replacement type guys.

It turns out in this scenario Ricky Henderson is on first, Heyward has no shot at making contact if he’s swinging (in the middle of a total Franceour like meltdown) and the 7 and 8 hitters are both 3-3 with 3 extra base hits and the Braves pitcher for the day is “in the zone” The fans don’t notice any of this because they are still baffled as to why Ricky was hitting 5th.
Minor will likely be a 6th starter in 2011, not in the rotation day 1. Spend this year in AA. Start next season as the ace of AAA and be ready when an injury strikes or so.
He’s not a Hanson or Heyward where he’s going to blow the doors off the league immediately. He’s a normal prospect where a reasonable amount of time at each level is ideal.
Yes, Detroit beat writers are waiting to report it after a nice late lunch.
…next December, by God.
what if it is a tie game in the bottom of the 9th with all our pinch hitters on the bench would that change the answer?
Oh, shoot, I don’t know, LOL. Wouldn’t much matter at that point who’s pitching, the 7 hitter gets walked even if he’s named Mendoza. The decision call there is, are you more confident in your PH with two outs or your 6 hitter with no outs? That could go either way, I guess.
As much as I love the barbecue, I could never get into the eastern North Carolina vinegar-based sauce (just settle down, DOB … as much as movies and music get debated on here, not everyone is a fan of the Down East style. That must be an acquired taste, and I just never acquired it from my brief time living in that part of the world.) — StingerSplash
Actually, I’m not one who criticizes others for their BBQ taste. Like some here, including big Lew, I actually love almost any style of good BBQ. Now, my family — dad, cousins, etc. — in Eastern North Carolina made funny faces when I told them that we’d stopped at Lexington on the way to Wilson at Thanksgiving and had a delicious Lexington-style BBQ sandwich (like the Eastern N.C. BBQ, only with some ketchup or tomato of some kind in the vinegar sauce). But that’s because some of them are very parochial and most either haven’t lived outside that region or just don’t allow themselves to acknowledge the goodness in other styles of Q different than their own.
I love Kansas City BBQ — ribs, brisket, everything — with the tangy sauce just about as much as I do Eastern N.C. pork. You just can’t surpass Gates and Arthur Bryant’s, right up there with Parker’s and Bill’s and the other best Eastern N.C. joints, though totally different. And I’ve also had some of the best BBQ in Texas, in Fort Worth and Houston. Again, different styles, but outstanding. Also had some terrific ribs at the Montgomery Inn in Cincinnati.
And right here in Atlanta, we’ve got several solid BBQ joints, particularly Daddy D’z (great ribs) and Wyatt’s, both on Memorial Drive.
If forced to choose one and only one style, I’d got Eastern N.C. BBQ, without the red in the sauce. But if someone told me I could only have Kansas City Q from Bryant’s or Gates for the rest of my life, I could live with that, too. It’s that good.
what if it is a tie game in the bottom of the 9th with all our pinch hitters on the bench would that change the answer?
I’m assuming in this scenario they would change the pitcher that is going to face Diaz but still curious what you would do
No, no, no. And that goes for anybody that would realistically be batting 6th for the Braves. Don’t make Yunel bunt, nor McCann, etc. Those guys are everyday starters in run production spots for a reason and bunting is not it.
To be fair, actors have to live in the public eye for better and for worse. While I don’t agree with Gibson’s transgressions, of course, at the same time though, I think as he tried to say to the interviewer…it’s been 4 years and he’d rather not relive those transgressions, let it go.
I’m from TN but lived in TX for 5 years. When I moved to TX and was there I was highly disappointed in TX BBQ. It’s very overrated. I have had some beef brisquet that I like, and that’s about it. I like most St. Louis style stuff.
But my favorite is TN, guess it’s what you grow up on. And my favorite 3 sauces are 1) Hickory smoke 2) Hickory smoke 3) Hickory smoke
Now I live in North Alabama. Here they like ‘white sauce’ or vinegar based sauce. It is okay but I’ll still stick to my TN favorite. BTW, if you’re ever taking a road trip through Chattanooga and have time to spare, go up Signal Mountain and eat at Waycrazies. You won’t be disappointed.
Heyward should be able to bunt if for no other reason than if and when defenses start putting the “shift” on him – playing 3 infielders on the right side of second – he can dump a bunt for a single down the 3rd base line.
DOB,
It’s too bad that the season doesn’t bring you through our state. I have to say, this little hometown BBQ joint have the best ribs and pulled pork that I’ve ever had. I’m like you, I enjoy just about any kind or style of BBQ sauce.
Thank you, DOB, for showing that all is fair in love and barbecue. OK, all is fair in barbecue.
There is a big western/eastern NC barbecue divide, isn’t there? Seems to be that way.
Now, could you do something about our lack of basketball coaching at Georgia Tech? Oy.
I knew a guy from Wilson (NC, home of the Tobs!) and we were at the ACC Tournament one year. We got to talking about barbecue. He asked me what people in Georgia (I believe his wife was from Valdosta) are thinking putting that red stuff on it. I said, you mean … barbecue … sauce?
One of those two Wilson joints you mentioned, DOB, is the big provider of the cue to NASCAR, I think.
“Honey, would you like a second helping and some more wine?”
BUENOS AIRES — Eating pork is at least as effective as popping a Viagra pill to spice up your sex life, according to Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, who claims to have tested the theory.
I’ll finally chime in with some BBQ talk. I think I’ve only mentioned BBQ once since I’ve been blogging here which is about a year and 1/2 now. Choo-Choo’s BBQ in Chatt. is what we go for. Myself, I like the pulled pork sandwich loaded with their homeade sauce or the loaded baked potato with an ice cold dr.pepper.
To be fair, actors have to live in the public eye for better and for worse. While I don’t agree with Gibson’s transgressions, of course, at the same time though, I think as he tried to say to the interviewer…it’s been 4 years and he’d rather not relive those transgressions, let it go.
Like Mark McGwire, Mel Gibson’s not here to talk about the past.
I can’t believe it’s less than 2 weeks until pitchers and catchers report. It’s going to be a fun Spring Training. I already got my tickets, now I just got to find a good cheap dive bar to watch the tournament.
I think that interviewer is just trying to test Gibson there. So obvious to me he’s trying to get his name out there. He’s knows the guy has a temper. I always like MG myself.
Bunting with no outs is akin to punting on first down
That is patently false. If it is tied, bottom of the 9th, and you get a lead off hit…especially a lead-off double…bunting a guy over puts a lot of pressure on the defense. If it is a lead-off double, you may even force the opponent to walk the bases loaded…

“I’ll kill any man here who makes Heyward bunt. And then I’ll kill their families and all their friends…alright, I’m coming out, so nobody better sign for a bunt.”
This afternoon’s Options Update from Interactive Brokers highlighted a large position traded Friday by an investor in Fannie Mae options.
“Mortgage financier Fannie Mae jumped onto our ‘most active by options volume’ market scanner after one investor went hog-wild with put options,” the note said.
The investor bought 118,000 March $1 put contracts at $0.15 a piece and sold 118,000 January 2012 $1 puts for $0.40 each. The trade brought a net credit of $2.95 million to the investor.
IB has two scenarios for the large trade.
1.Open interest of 156,689 puts at the March $1.0 strike indicate the trader could be buying-to-close a previously established 118,000-lot short put position initiated back in September of 2009. If this is the case, the investor is extending the short put position out to the January 2012 contract and expecting the government agency to ultimately survive the next couple of years. In this scenario, the trader keeps the $0.40 in premium on the sale of the fresh batch of put options if Fannie’s share price rallies above $1.00 by expiration in 2012.
2.It is possible that the open interest at the March $1.0 strike is unrelated to today’s activity. In this second scenario, the trader is essentially predicting that shares will erode ahead of March expiration. If this is the case the trader sold 118,000 January 2012 $1.0 strike puts for $0.40 apiece in order to take a long 118,000-lot put stance at the March $1.0 strike for which he paid $0.15 each. The net credit received in this scenario amounts to $0.25 per contract and generates additional profits as Fannie’s shares continue to fall under $1.00.
IB will be watching the open interest at the March $1 level to see if a position is closed, but either way, the trade likely has more than a few Fannie watchers guessing.
I still think that Heyward should spend the first half of the season at Gwinnett until after the All-Star break – even with no Damon.
Hinske needs at-bats, Cabrera needs at-bats, Diaz needs at-bats, and Infante needs at-bats (McClouth will get his). If Heyward comes out of spring training as the Second Coming of Ken Griffey, Jr. or A-Rod: The First Seattle Season, one of the first four have got to go.
That is patently false. If it is tied, bottom of the 9th, and you get a lead off hit…especially a lead-off double…bunting a guy over puts a lot of pressure on the defense. If it is a lead-off double, you may even force the opponent to walk the bases loaded…
you stupid summabich. you get a leadoff double, you have three chances to score him. BUT you are going to sacrifice an out to get him to third? dumb, dumb, dumb. you know what puts alot more pressure on a defense than bunting someone over? having more opportunities through less outs to get a runner home
Now don’t take this the wrong way, but … black folks make some damn good BBQ. When we were in Nashville we went to a place, forgot the name, and it was not only the best BBQ I ever had, but they made the best ribs ever. Another black owned place was in Murfreesboro, TN. They had awesome BBQ, much better than Choo-Choo’s, not as good as the one in Nashville.
I agree with DOB – all barbeque is good though I do prefer the Eastern NC barbeque with the vinegar base. Vinegar based cole slaw is great as well. If it is barbeque I will eat it. Country Barbeque in Greensboro, NC is the best in my area.
By the by, if you’re in Miami, People’s BBQ in Overtown has been around since the turn of the last century, owned by a Bahamian family who make a vinegar & mustard-based sauce – a secret recipe, natch – that is wickedly awesome! Just amazing ribs, mouth-watering sides (their mac ‘n cheese is the TRUTH!), and fresh slices of cake that are sinful.
All washed down with a lovely glass of flop (sweet tea and lemonade).
every once in a while, the concert gods work their magic in hattiesburg … just got word Jamey Johnson and the DBTs are playing in the town I call home within the next 2 months … tis a great day!
Tonight we’re going to try the new barbecue place near my house that’s been getting rave reviews, Community BBQ, before heading over to the sold-out Girls show at the EARL (ended up getting tix from a kind person who saw my earlier note). Anyone tried Community BBQ yet? I know we had at least one person recommend it on the blog a week or so ago.
Daybed Wagmoe: that is excellent news…I truly believe that once Minor gets to the majors he is gonna shut up all the people that thought the Braves were crazy taking Minor with the 7th pick. If any organization knows pitching its the Braves. SMITTY
I hope so, but just cause he’s got a high floor doesn’t mean he has a high ceiling. Might be just a one-story pitcher.
DOB-Make that Not Quite as Big Lew. I am now 60 pounds lighter and am now a person of Somewhat Less Substance. Not skinny yet, that comes with the next 60 off-by Christmas.
MZ, that’s strong, those two shows in a couple of months. I missed Jamey Johnson over in Athens, unfortunately. Really want to see that dude live. Real deal, that one. Not many like him coming long these days in country music.
would compare Minor more on the stuff category to Avery with much better control at this point… P-Town
he does not have nearly as good stuff as Avery had. I guess he will now be the next hot hot hot can’t miss pitcher in a long line of blog overreactions. Hope y’all is right.
nolie-We will need a #4-5 pitcher. If that’s what Minor finally hakes out as, what’s the problem? With Hanson, Teheran, Vizcaino and the rest, we won’t really need him to be more than an effective lower rotation pitcher.

That would certainly make all the other stuff fly right by me, LOL.
And, sure, if Heyward suddenly shows up with a .300 OBP, I’d be bunting that sucker, too.
He wouldn’t be doing it in Atlanta, but, sure…

No, no, no. And that goes for anybody that would realistically be batting 6th for the Braves. Don’t make Yunel bunt, nor McCann, etc. Those guys are everyday starters in run production spots for a reason and bunting is not it.

DOB,
I’m from TN but lived in TX for 5 years.

One of those two Wilson joints you mentioned, DOB, is the big provider of the cue to NASCAR, I think.

That is patently false. If it is tied, bottom of the 9th, and you get a lead off hit…especially a lead-off double…bunting a guy over puts a lot of pressure on the defense. If it is a lead-off double, you may even force the opponent to walk the bases loaded…

Interesting read:
In the world of options, it’s easy to stick out.

Check that – not Infante.
