Yeah, he did on occasion, but they said coming into last season that they might skip him here or there. But even though they said that, I don’t recall them ever saying it’s because he was tired. They said that his shoulder was sore, or he needed a few days after taking a line drive off his neck, which I think was against the Yankees in late June.

I’m glad Damon’s not coming to Atlanta. It’s time for Mitch Jones to get a break in the majors. He could be our sleeping giant.
————-
I too am a fan of Mitch Jones. I’d like nothing better than to see him win a spot on the bench in ST. He can play the corner OF spots as well as First and he hits for awesome power. It remains to be seen if he can hit Major league pitching.
P’cola Brave – I think you maybe right about Mitch Jones but he for sure want get a chance if Damon is a Brave. He is going to have to hit 10 homers in ST to get a chance. I just hope he does.
If I were a good player I would sign a contract with Scott Boras, no question about it. I dislike the man from what I have heard about him but you gotta give him his due. He gets results.
Just Sayin, agreed about the part we were better without him. Smoltz turned down more money in his career being loyal to the Braves than he made up by leaving last year. He felt he was worth more than he actually was. The guy was upset b/c he felt his loyalty wasn’t reciprocal. He would be useful to the organization going forward. You have to agree.
Seriously y’all – when you’re talking the difference between $4 mil and $4.5 mil, would that extra half mil make it worth moving to Detroit when you could move to Atlanta?
I think Heyward is more valuable to the Braves then Damon, and if Damon were going to take at bats from him then i guess its a good things the Tigers are idiots.
Andrew-Damon would have played left field whether or not it was Heyward or Melky/Diaz playing in right. He wouldn’t have taken time away from Heyward no matter what.
I’ve read this was the owner again. And I’d love to have an owner willing to expand payroll to get the player the team needs.
But hey, if the Braves take their above average pitching and below average hitting to another 3rd place finish, we can all sit back and be happy they didn’t “over spend” to achieve mediocrity.
CouchTater: Yes. And it’s ugly. He is due an average annual salary of $8.6M/Yr over the next three years ($25.5M total). Pretty expensive for a platoon player.
The thing is, not every team believes as some seem to here, that a guy who made $13 mill last season and hit .282 with 24 homers, a .365 OBP, 107 runs and 82 RBI isn’t worth at least half that amount for 2010.
And apparently Boras wasn’t quite as full of b.s. as some have suggested….
But hey, if the Braves take their above average pitching and below average hitting to another 3rd place finish, we can all sit back and be happy they didn’t “over spend” to achieve mediocrity.
Two offers from the tigers, a one year and a two year? Gotta think the two year deal has a lower annual salary than the one year… wonder if any of it is deferred? And I wonder if the Braves offer was final. The dance had to start sometime. Braves kicked it off and now it’s on. Though if Iltch is in on the finances, I would suspect he’d win. He Ted Turners for Boras clients.
TennPaul: You read correctly. It’s Tigers owner Illitch approving this one. He is willing to spend if he thinks it’ll make a difference on the field, and he’s been persuaded by Boras several times before on far bigger contracts.
I have to say, the Detroit front office really does seem clueless these days. I know they are all experienced baseball guys but, man, they are playing against themselves here… and losing! Reminds me of the competence they showed in the Edgar/JJ deal. Frank Wren is looking better and better to me.
This team looks solid anyway going into ‘10. Let Schafer and Heyward get a couple months in at Gwinnett and then bring them up for keeps. Then Melky or McLouth reels in some nice prospects. Life is good.
And Lew, I agree with you on that. But take it farther: He not only can be good at his job and still full of it, he can — and is — great at his job in part because of that.
Told you guys damon was going to the tigers. I didn’t get one response to my comment after I made it.
What really chaps my a– isn’t so much the Lowe signing(which was pretty bad) but moreso the kawakami signing for over 7 mill per season. At least lowe is a proven major leaguer and was coming off a solid ‘08 season. Kawakami wasn’t all that in japan and they knew when they signed him to that stupid contract he’d be a number 5 here.
Think….we could be readong “BRAVES SIGN DAMON”. Instead we’re left with a swinging for the fences leadoff hitter in mclouth.
Boy…how good would it be to have that money back from kawakami?
Lew: I still think this team needs more offense. I didn’t think Damon would add too much more, but he was adding something more. And on a short term deal I see little harm. I’m not terribly impressed when the Braves save money by not adding a guy that would help. The Braves have very little committed over the next few years and a line of young cheap talent on the way. I think they could afford to expand a little bit more if it gives them more of an offensive edge this season.
DOB-Any good businessman is by necessity a good salesman. Still and all, you don’t walk away from the used car lot praising the salesman all that often.
I can’t imagine the Braves would find a quick taker for Diaz or Cabrera to sign Damon. I also can’t imagine the Braves trading one unless they have a signed contract with Damon
TenPaul-No, what you’re really saying is that Liberty Media is too cheap to get who you think would help-maybe maybe not-remains to be seen if they can’t do it without Damon.
Thing is is that what liberty Media spends on this team is hardly peanuts. I really never have understood the hate for a $90 + million salary scale. Considering that our attendance is middle of the pack, we spend a lot more proportionately because we’re in the top 1/3 of team salaries.
That they don’t spend it how you, I or other fans deem appropriate is meaningless. You want a say-buy stock or attend more games and buy a Glaus jersey.
I can’t help but laugh at the suggestions on here…. mitch jones, a career minor leaguer? My goodness, are some of you people’s standards that low?
I agree— some of are so clueless to think that 7 million bucks a year is a rip off for johnny damon. He could’ve really helped the braves, but now we’re simply left with a diaz, melk platoon and having fingers crossed on a 20 year old prospect.
Could be worse, I know, but it could be a lot better too.
At the mike – Kawakami was better than Lowe last year. He’s also less than half of Lowe’s salary. I know which contract I feel better about by far. And I still think both are above average ML starters.
Has anyone read anything about Cuban free agent Of Leslie Anderson who could be the outfielder we need to hold it down ’til Heyward is ready after that we can trade Melky
Well, I hope the Damon to the Tigers move is true. And I hope FW isn’t tempted to up his offer. Just because Damon made 13 million last year in salary, doesn’t mean he was really worth it.
And for all Scott Boras’ success, it is still sad that he feels like he has to resort to his tactics to get the last nickel for his guy. If my son were a up and coming major league ballplayer, I would be ticked off if he hired someone like Scott Boras.
It isn’t always about the money…….I stand by my earlier statements!
Lew: It isn’t that I think they are “cheap”. I don’t think the Pirates are “cheap.” I could do many things with $40M. That too me is a lot of money. But what does bother me is that the payroll is so strict that it couldn’t be expanded to fit one more piece into the puzzle to push the team further. I’m not asking that they go out and commit $120M/7yr deals to every big guy on the market. Just that the owner, like Turner used to be, and Iltch is now, would allow more financial flexibility in procuring the necessary talent.
Again, I’m not impressed that the Braves may have “saved money” by not offering a few million more to Johnny Damon. That is of no relief to me. I dare say he wouldn’t cripple the team going forward on such a short deal.
Formerly known as USED CARS, I am heartbroken by the hate….We have a saying in the car business, “buyers are liars” and I think that may be true in reference to some of the GMs who “weren’t interested in certain players”…It’s all a game, the stakes are just a little higher than when you ask me how much I will take for my 2008 Altima…..Do miss writing, but the money is better
Wayne- unfortunately, I believe we no longer are in an era where players play for the love of the game… it’s clearly all about the money. Sure, there are many, many guys who do love the game and play the right way- but major decisions revolve around money now, and not team or sport loyalty. (Chipper seems to be an anomoly in this- he actually gives up money and defers money for the good of the team.)
Who did the Tigers get in just the Granderson portion of the trade(s)? Not the Edwin Jackson portion. I would just look it up, but I wasn’t too familar with them in the first place and I am curious if they got “worthwhile” prospects in return for him? Uga Acct
why separate them? The one wouldn’t likely have happened without the other from what I’ve read.
ugaaccountant— I understand you need good pitching, but it’s irresponsible for a mid-market team to invest that much cash into one aspect of your team. Wren obviously misread some things like counting on frenchy, kelly, etc.
That’s old news, but it still plays a part in the events of today if you think about it.
Hopefully wren has learned some things in the last year.
Andrew- hope you’re wrong. We’d be even bigger suckers than the Tiger’s GM if we gave a 36-year-old OF a two-year deal when we have Schafer and Heyward so close to being ready.
Andrew in PA: John Schuerholz just told us that he told Frank Wren that he supported the consideration of signing Johnny Damon…he says they are engaged
Glavine said he pretty much knew soon after he was released last summer that he was done as a pitcher, that he’d retire. He didn’t throw or work out on a daily schedule after that, and when he did throw his arm didn’t feel very good.
Said that in hindsight, it probably worked out best that he was released. But he’s not ready to say it was the right decision, because he doesn’t know how well he would’ve pitched if he’d been given opportunity.
He sounds genuinely excited/pleased to be back with the organization, said it only made sense because this is where he established himself and had his biggest impact, and he wants his kids to be able to enjoy his Braves past and Braves connection as he moves forward.
Said he’s doing a little bit of everything so that he can decide if there’s any one thing he likes most and can concentrate on in future. And while he might consider a pitching-coach job at some point in the future, he said right now that makes no sense because he’s got five kids at home, three of them still really young, and wants to spend a lot of time with them.
TenPaul-Come on. We all have to live within our means – that’s what budgets are all about. Suppose to come up with that extra $6-8 million, Liberty had to lay off people from another division? Would that be right? How do you think those folks might feel about Damon’s acquisition?
Everyone acts as if they (Liberty Media) have this room in their main office building with stacks of petty cash laying around and all they need to do is fill out a petty cash voucher? It could easily be a situation where to add the extra bucks they’d have to get special board approval or Lord Knows what all else. Point is – we don’t know and are not privy to what all might or might not be involved or what other more lucrative projects they might have to put on hold..
Maybe things would be better for us with an individual owner who could turna round and make absurd deals on a whim, but guess what? Ain’t that way now, hasn’t been for some time-either for us or other clubs and ain’t likely to change anytime soon.
Hell-does anyone really think even Arthur Blank hasn’t been affected by the current economy?
“While I want to at least get my foot in the door with the game of baseball on the business side of it, as opposed to being a player, quite honestly I’m not sure what I want to do. There’s a lot of things that interest me, broadcasting being one of them.
“So this opportunity we’ve come up with gives me a tremendous amount of flexibility to experience a number of things in the organization – broadcasting, maybe some on-field stuff minor league-wise, a little bit of player-development type things, certainly major league front-office stuff…. So in a perfect world for me, it exposes me to a lot of things so that hopefully sometime relatively soon I can figure out if there’s one aspect of it that I really enjoy and can focus on that in the future.
“The one thing that I really didn’t want to do was jump back in and find out a year from now that’s not what I want to do. So this affords me the opportunity to experience a little bit of everything and hopefully figure out not only what I enjoy the most, but maybe where I can help this organization the most.”
Nice to hear (or, um, read) those comments from Glavine. That sounds like the Tommy I want to remember. That and the Tommy from the 95 World Series. To me, Tom Glavine and Davis Justice marked the beginning of the “new” Braves and the end of the Murphy Horner era. I wonder if, a few years down the road, we’ll look back at Hanson and Heyward the same way? Wouldn’t surprise me at all. Makes me want to keep buying tickets, so I can say “I was there when ….”
Nolie – cool, I didn’t research that trade very heavily from the Tigers aspect.
At the mike – I actually agree with you. I never would have signed Lowe and Kawakami. For me it would have been fine either or. But Kawakami did win year 1.
Lew and Dobi etc – re Cars – My poor dead dad would turn in his grave if he heard me say the following (he worked for Gm for 40 years), but I think
FORD, yes bleeding FORD, has a great product now and if managed properly they could be as iconic with the sub 30s set as Apple in the next 5 years… their technology focus is 1st rate and finally they (above all else) are learning to market their product to an audience that may actually want something American made…. technology rules
Oh, and congrats to glavine. He deserves to be apart of the organization as long as he wants. Wasn’t my favorite brave of the 90’s, but he was still a part of the success, for sure.
I don’t know why we have yet to read where braves pull out of this thing….tigers will get him anyways.
Lew- good points on Liberty Media’s ownership. I remember when they bought Braves they said they’d let McGuirk (sp.??? Braves president or whatever) handle the money and do whtever he felt necessary. Clearly, that either wasn’t the case, or he was indeed given a ceiling amount.
Congrats Tommy. I for one and thrilled to have you back where you belong, with the Braves. After being a player rep his whole career it will be interesting to see Glavine learn the front office part of baseball from a different point of view
dogs-Your Dad would have liked me then – I’m a hard core Chevy person and have been for years. I’ve owned 7 new ones and several used (including a 72 Malibu with a 350 – drank gas unmercifully, but a hell of a car, nonetheless).
at the mike – Leave our current offer on the table. Maybe Damon wakes up tommorow and realizes he doesn’t want to live up north. There are more important things than money in life. Like the guy on ESPN the radio was saying yesterday, he prioritizes his job opportunity by Diversity of Food/culture choices, Weather, and Airport access to the rest of the world. If that guy was Damon, he’d be signing the Braves offer.
Incidentally, that’s the kind of decision many of us make without thinking about it. I could throw my resume in a national database and probably get an offer 25% or even 50% higher within a few months, but I wouldn’t take it unless it was in a very specific set of cities I’d be willing to live my life in.
So just on the off chance Damon decides based on something other than salary, let’s leave the offer on the table a few days.
Tigers owner approves a 2 year 14 million dollar deal? Thank god. That ought to put and end to all this nonsense.
Who’s next Dye? As I recall, the Braves had “no interest” in Lowe last winter before the guys they wanted went elsewhere. So, let it begin.
Start spouting about how Jermaine Dye is the “missing link” to the Braves post-season chain.
He’s a better fit for Tigers anyhow, because he can DH and he’s a lifer in the A.L. My guess is that if all offers were even, he still would have chose the Tigers because of that.
But it’s good to see what being at the “top of the list” gets the Braves. Just like every move that didn’t happen that was attempted last winter, this too will end up being a blessing in disguise.
Onward and upward with Melky, Matty, Natey, Jasony and maybe Jordany.
Wow. Look at that. I can make nicknames for guys just like Bobby.
Lew – I have thrashed and bashed many a fine Aussie GM (we call them HOLDEN) over the years… my 1st car was a hotted up 202 Holden Torana, fine little beast… I hope we take the opportunity now in USA to move away from Toyota and back to GM/Ford/the other mob…. our quality has improved dramatically in the last 4-5 years
alas, my 5 experiences with GM in USA have been 4 bad, 1 great (a Pontiac G8 I think they call it)
Foxsports.com reporting Tigers offering Damon a 2/14. If this is true, I propose we make a few changes to the English language. Situation: a guy’s continuously shoving $100 bills into an average looking stripper’s g-string when a smaller denomination would clearly get him similar results. The stripper then thinks “I’m gonna take this Dombrowski to the VIP room where I can REALLY Boras him.”
I mean, they were bidding against themselves! No WAY he wouldn’t have taken a 1 year 8 if they’d tossed that out there with the Braves at 4.5. No WAY.
Dogs……interesting comments about Ford NOW, because we have a 1966 Mustang convertible (mine, mine, mine!) and two Crown Vics, 1995 and 1997 and they have been very dependable cars for us. So, if the product is only getting better as you’re saying, I’d say they’ll come close to having a lock on the market in the near future.

dogs-I never left and won’t – unless Chevy doesn’t come up with a small four wheel drive to rival the National Car of Vermont – a Subaru. Been talking my wife out of THAT for several years now. I can only use the OnStar as a standard feature ploy so much longer.

Glavine’s joining the Fox Sports South broadcast booth for at least 13 Sunday home Braves games.
Glavine has been officially named special assistant to team president John Schuerholz.

Why might the Tigers trade a $5.5M Granderson and sign a $7M Damon?
Perhaps because Granderson is a platoon player.

While Damon is not.

GLAVINE on the new wide-ranging job:
So this affords me the opportunity to experience a little bit of everything and hopefully figure out not only what I enjoy the most, but maybe where I can help this organization the most.”

at the mike – Leave our current offer on the table.
