Hey DOB…have you ever eaten at Sam’s BBQ 1 on Lower Roswell Road in Marietta? It is in my top two BBQ places I have ever eaten at…loved it! Their NC, vinegar based sauce is awesome!
“Sports and news, and that’s about it. Sometimes I’ll watch a show 15 minutes after it starts, but on DVR, so I can skip through the commercials.”DOB
We’re pretty much the same way. Just too tough with tryin’ to get kids to bed and what not, to not actually miss anything while it’s being aired, and like you said, very nice to skip the commercials.
Even stuff I’ve watched on HBO, I usually do On Demand for the same reason, in the event that you actually change the channel and then can’t rewind it back far enough. But yeah, Sports I watch live (but if it’s the occasional Chiefs game on our local broadcasts, I’ll still DVR it in case I need/want to go back – for the same reasons, if the kids change the channel and I can’t rewind, that sucks).
I honestly wasn’t sure, scoots. I’ve only heard the phrase while watching Warrior games. And our play-by-play guy is like the broadcasting love child of Rob Dibble and Joe Morgan. That is to say, I don’t listen to dude all that close. Anywho, I think he says “swallowing the whistle.” Warriors are horrible; have been, will be, and all that, and dude is constanlty harping on the officiating. As if a Don Nelson coached 6′6 and under team is really the 90s Bulls, but those darn refs…
Eating, chewing, swallowing…they all suggest the zebras ain’t blowing ‘em. I need a new term. Maybe something more R-Rated. Clinton-era, even.
Finally convinced my mom to get the DVR. Took me three times to explain why she couldn’t just fast-forward through the commercials. “Mom, you have to record it first. You can’t just forward through stuff that hasn’t happened yet; it’s not a time-travel machine.”
I may be going crazy, but does anyone else notice how much Mark Bowman uses the phrases “reason to believe” or “reason to wonder” or “reason to doubt”. I find it hard to read any of his blogs anymore without focusing in on those phrases. It’s like when someone is talking and constantly saying “you know”. After listening for a while, you can’t focus on what they’re saying because all you hear is “you know” over and over. I find it very frustrating.
DOB —–
Saw “Crazy Heart” last night (after the Super Bowl, of course) … wasn’t completely blown away by the movie itself … story reminded me an awful lot of “The Wrestler” … now, I know “Crazy Heart” was a book first, so it’s possible “The Wrestler” ripped off the “Crazy Heart” book, but stories were strikingly similar …
but the acting all the way around (save a couple here and there) was superb … in all honesty, Acting 101 professors might as well just sit their classes down on the first day and just show this movie, and say, “that’s how it’s done” … Bridges was fantastic, Gyllenhaal (sp?) was great, Duvall was excellent … wasn’t crazy about Farrell’s performance … i know he didn’t get much screen time, but he just didn’t fit with the other actors … I would’ve rather seen somebody like a James Franco or someone like that in the Tommy Sweet role … I mean, I know they had to have a pretty boy-type who could halfway sing, but to have an Irishman play that role just didn’t sit right with me … he wasn’t horrible, but he should’ve made me forget that he was Irish in real life, but he didn’t … I even thought the guy who played “Bill Wilson” who owned the liquor store was good in his little bit … I also liked the guy who played Gyllenhaal’s uncle (but then again, I’ve liked him since his turn as the lawnmower repair shop owner in “Sling Blade”) …
and, well, the music was absolutely fantastic … found myself singing along out loud in the theater, since I got the soundtrack some weeks back … guess it was a good thing my girlfriend and I were the only ones in the theater …
I think people coming here to whine about Bowman is a little weak. Granted, bloggers telling others what not to say is even worse, but if you’ve got a problem with dude, go tell him. It’s not like complaining about Wren, or Chipper, or things where you have no other forum. There is a perfect space to tell the guy directly what you find objectionable. Saying it here feels too much like talking about a guy behind his back. And that is douchebaggery at its height. Say it to their face, when you can.
And, sorry dp for pickin’ on ya, but you’re just the latest in a growing line.
And after that rant, dp, I think you might be the first to knock Bowman. I think the others here’ve been going after Bradley. I still confuse ‘em, three years later. Even thanked Bowman for his work at the AJC before a Giants game.
The Braves never left florida with both schafer and anderson. They cut anderson when schafer won the CF job. They broke camp with Anderson, Schafer, and Franceour.
Have you ever been to the Depeaux in downtown Decatur? I had a similar experience to your Community Q experience on Saturday night. It was our first time trying the place out and they were out of everything that we ordered (appetizers, entrees, even alcohol). I have vowed to never go back. It was really annoying.
I wasn’t knocking Bowman. I’ve read him for years and value all the information he provides. I’m mostly complaining about what’s going on in my own head where I can’t focus on his blogs anymore because I keep focusing on finding those phrases. I figured most people here read his blog, so I thought I would ask if anyone else notices these types of things. It was merely a comment, not a complaint. That’s the problem with blogs, you can’t read a person’s tone in most cases.
Like I tell my wife when she’s looking for a fight…easy tiger…I mean no harm.
I think the word “sweepstakes” should be banned. Sports analyst abuse that word bit time.
Bay Area Steve, hopefully that rant was general enough to not be considered talking behind someone’s back. It shouldn’t be “douchebaggery” (very good technical term by the way) if I’m talking about an entire industry, right?
Ten Paul and Unbelievable- You’re both right-Glaus won’t hit for that high an average and won’t get on base quite that much (though he does walk). He will however, hit that many (and more) HR and knock in at least that many runs.
The thing is-he will do it from the cleanup spot in the lineup-something that none of the above did for the Braves last year. THAT is what will make the difference. Ask Chipper at the end of 2010 when he hits .325 with 20 something HR, and OBP of .420 and has a comeplete turn around year. Or Prado with a year of The Real Chipper hitting behind him.
Ask McCann at the end of the season what he thinks not having to bat cleanup and having Yunel or Heyward batting behind him instead of Casey Kotchman for half a year.
THAT is the value of Glaus as opposed to Roach and Company.
I had the extreme pleasure of hanging out this weekend in New Orleans. It was a total party! I had a fantastic time and am soooo happy that the Saints won. I like the underdogs and they certainly were. For those of you who have been dissing them, WHO DAT?
After looking more at him, I don’t think Gomes would be a good signing. Probably worse than Diaz defensively and he can’t leadoff like Damon. At least Damon gives you a solid leadoff guy.Plus, DOB doesn’t like him … remember the ‘08 WS? Guy is a douche, or seems to be.
The Braves never left florida with both schafer and anderson. They cut anderson when schafer won the CF job. They broke camp with Anderson, Schafer, and Franceour.
—————
If Anderson was cut how did he break camp with the Braves? I guess I am just confused.
I noticed that Marcus Thames signed a minor league deal with Yanks for about 900K if he makes the team. Do you know if Braves were interested in him at all? I hope they at least made him an offer. He just seems to have been a great fit for the Braves…minor league deal, not expensive, can play OF corners and 1B and has an .867 OBS against lefties over the last three years. He would have been a great back up for those 3 positions if even as a platoon.
While I like what the Braves have done this off season, I’m not convinced they have enough offense…especially if/when Glaus and/or Chipper go down with injuries. It just seems to me the Braves still need some insurance (a backup plan) in case that happens. And Thames would have been perfect. Jonny Gomes might be as well as Diaz could possibly play 1B if Glaus is injured. I’m not sure Gomes will take a minor league deal though.
Anyway, just thought I would ask if you heard anything. Thanks.
DWW, they aren’t interested in any free agents. If Damon weren’t struggling to get a contract, we would all be assuming the Braves are done until Spring Training begins.
DOB—-Have you spoken to any braves players who may know Damon ( or even if Bobby has) and have any insight into his thinking regarding bravos, his hopes etc
Just back from burning a little gas on the bike. Too nice not to get out for a short ride, at least, before more rain and cold arrives tomorrow.
Anyway, I got the list of non-roster spring invitees (the minor leaguers, not the six-year free agent types, which were announced more than a month ago; Chris Resop was the only new one of that kind since the original list of Mitch Jones and Joe Thurston, etc.)
The other minor-league guys invited to big-league camp: RHPs Eric Cordier and Craig Kimbrel; LHP Mike Minor; catchers Jesus Sucre and Braeden Schlehuber; INFs Freddie Freeman, Brandon Hicks; and OFs Jason Heyward, Cody Johnson and Matt Young.
Already announced invitees included RHPs Scott Proctor and Resop; LHP Mariano Gomez; catchers Orlando Mercado and J.C. Boscan; INF Thurston; and OFs Brent Clevlen and Mitch Jones.
Ten Paul and Unbelievable- You’re both right-Glaus won’t hit for that high an average and won’t get on base quite that much (though he does walk). He will however, hit that many (and more) HR and knock in at least that many runs.
Jeeze guys, you make TROY GLAUS sound like our last year’s comments about GREG NORTON……. average not too good, scores some runs, hits a few dingers, and gets on with walks a lot. A glorified GN sends chills down my backbone just thinking about it. Here’s hoping my premonition is only a ghost story.
The Braves salary dumped their best starting pitcher, and went shopping at the dollar store to fill the holes in the lineup. There has been nothing in the Braves action this off season, that would suggest that the Braves are going to spend 5million dollars to sign an outfielder, when the team already has a cheaper option (Heyward) in-house. The job is his to lose, and unless he falls on his face in spring training he’ll be the right fielder. Whether he’s truly ready or not.
The other minor-league guys invited to big-league camp: RHPs Eric Cordier and Craig Kimbrel; LHP Mike Minor; catchers Jesus Sucre
OMG, SWEET JESUS (JESUS SUCRE) is coming to ST.!!!!! I predict he will supplant CLINT SAMMONS soon, in about a year or so. Just a hunch. It’s premo day guys, sorry. Right or wrong, I’ve learned to trust my feelings about certain things in life, this currently being one.
richbrave-That snow must be getting to you. Norton hit 89 ML HR. Glaus has hit 30 or more six times and never hit less than 16 when he played less games because of injuries (excepting last season in which he played a handful of games)/ Year before last he hit 27 in St. Louis.
Maybe he won’t hit 40 something again or in Atlanta, but to compare him with the 09 model of Greg Norton? Dude.
What does Jordan Schafer’s absence from that list indicate? Anything? I realize he is projected to begin in AAA, so will he just be with them for all of Spring Training? I’m not really sure what AAA spring training consists of, so forgive my ignorance please.
Told you only a gut feeling. Kinda’ like my feeling on VASQUEZ. If he finally found his comfort zone in ATLANTA, how comfortable will he be in NEW YORK? I’m thinking, not very. And with JAVIER, it’s all in his head. He’s got the arm. I really am not sure he’ll do all that well in N.Y. But again, it’s a premonition. Neither GLAUS, SUCRE or VASQUEZ has anything to do with reason.
rob in sc-Did you perhaps watch Vaszqez last year? He was second in the league in K’s, had a substantially sub 3 ERA and had he gotten any run support, he would have won 20 games, Jurrjens maybe had a slightly better ERA, but his K to BB ratio was nowhere near as good and Hanson only pitched half a season. Why do you think Javy wasn’t the best?
DOB yes she is great live and on video, unfortunately for some reason it often doesn’t come across as good on dvd. The energy is a big part of the equation and of course it is less evident without visuals. I’ve seen her about half a dozen times. N8 was talking the other day about groups who are not as good live, she is the opposite of that.
Because I am talking about this year and in the future. I was pissed when we traded Vazy. However, to this point, 2009 was a career year for him. I am more confident that Hanson and Jurrjens will have a better year this season.
Texas’ recent slide has actually got me a little more worried for your Jayhawks than when they were undefeated and ranked #1. Since it will be a home game and they really need this game more than KU does, I wonder if that adds to the team’s emotional lift. Thoughts?
Just left from the autograph sinings, where the people that organized wouldn’t let me ask bobby cox a question, and physically pushed my family out of the way before we could ask him even half of a question.
Heath: Agreed (not about your opinion of Superbad, but your thoughts on tonight’s KU at Texas game). Texas is going to be fired up for this one, at home in a game that could help reverse their slide and help a lot for tourney seeding, etc. On top of fact this has become a real rivalry in recent years as these teams have met in each of the past several Big 12 title games. I fully expect Longhorns to play a tough game in front of a packed, energized crowd.
Rob from SC, very good, I think. He seemed at home in the NL with Cox. No reason to think he wouldn’t have repeated. His history shows otherwise, but he never pitched back-to-back seasons with the Braves either.
What were the odds that Vazquez would have repeated his 09 season even if he stayed in Atlanta? Rob
The odds were very good that he would have had another above average. ERA would likely have gone up some, but it is an ideal park for him. His ERA has been hurt by usually pitching in smaller hitters parks, even then in 9 of the last 10 years his ERA+ has been average at worst to way above average at best. The ted is big enough to keep most of those fly balls inside.
I’m not complaining about him being traded but I get tired of all the won’t have as good a year stuff, cause the odds are very high that he would still have been very good, in the 120-130ERA_ range.
What irks me is that his ERA is bound to go up in that park and facing DHs all the time, and most will say “I told you so” when it is apples and oranges. Of course it’s gonna go up there. We’ll have to see what his ERA+ ends up as, but I agree with others that he had a comfort zone here and he seems to be a guy who does best where he’s happy e.g. Montreal and Atlanta
I wouldn’t be so upset if they had just let me ask one question, that I came from huntsville, alabama to ask. On that note does any know how to find out how to get a player or coach to come talk to my high school baseball team
I just mean that he is not a lock to have that type of season again. I understand that his numbers will go up pitching on that ballpark against the DH. I just don’t know if he is as good as he was last year
TNBrian —-
including “The Break-Up” in your list of top 10 comedies of all-time completely nullifies the rest of your list, and it’s a shame, too, because you had some good choices in there … but overall, i have to disagree with a few of your picks … i mean, despite the fact that “What About Bob?” is one of my all-time favorite comedies, i don’t think it belongs in THE top 10 of all-time … it was funny, but nothing overly original or anything … i mean, where’s “Anchorman”?
Wren sucks. Chipper sucks. Glaus sucks. Hudson sucks. Melky sucks. Wagner sucks. Saito sucks. McLouth sukcs. Hinske sucks. KK sucks. Lowe sucks. Schafer sucks. Bobby sucks. Minor sucks (only as the #7 pick though), Heyward’s not ready.
I think I got em all. Sorry optimists. I’ve caved. Time to try and hang with the “cool” crowd, and just come to grips with the facts that there will be no baseball played in 2010.
dmack2027—The Braves never left florida with both schafer and anderson. They cut anderson when schafer won the CF job. They broke camp with Anderson, Schafer, and Franceour.
I don’t quite understand that statement, but when i said anderson, schafer and francine, i was talking about loaf (or Garrett) not josh anderson. Another problem, they didn’t cut anderson, they traded him to detroit for Rudy Darrow.

Maybe he won’t hit 40 something again or in Atlanta, but to compare him with the 09 model of Greg Norton? Dude.

Texas’ recent slide has actually got me a little more worried for your Jayhawks than when they were undefeated and ranked #1. Since it will be a home game and they really need this game more than KU does, I wonder if that adds to the team’s emotional lift. Thoughts?

I’m not complaining about him being traded but I get tired of all the won’t have as good a year stuff, cause the odds are very high that he would still have been very good, in the 120-130ERA_ range.
nolie
February 8th, 2010
7:22 pm
What irks me is that his ERA is bound to go up in that park and facing DHs all the time, and most will say “I told you so” when it is apples and oranges. Of course it’s gonna go up there. We’ll have to see what his ERA+ ends up as, but I agree with others that he had a comfort zone here and he seems to be a guy who does best where he’s happy e.g. Montreal and Atlanta

including “The Break-Up” in your list of top 10 comedies of all-time completely nullifies the rest of your list, and it’s a shame, too, because you had some good choices in there … but overall, i have to disagree with a few of your picks … i mean, despite the fact that “What About Bob?” is one of my all-time favorite comedies, i don’t think it belongs in THE top 10 of all-time … it was funny, but nothing overly original or anything … i mean, where’s “Anchorman”?

dmack2027—The Braves never left florida with both schafer and anderson.
