I agree with you Redstick19 about Johnny Miller. You could argue one way or the other whether Hudson or Lowe should be the third or fourth, but better at this point in his career than Hanson or JJ? Don’t think so. Unless he suddenly DOES come back to his Oakland self, which is the era most of his apologists feel the need to quote his stats from. I like Hudson; he’s a good guy and a solid starter. There are a number of good teams he’d probably be a two on, and some bad ones he might be the ace. But he isn’t the ace here unless that surgery and rehab have taken seven or eight years off him. Dogsbrekky, if you’re using wins as a measurement Hudson’s only equaled Lowe’s win total in last year’s “bad” season ONCE in his tenure as a Brave.
I really wish my BS and sarcasm were more easily identified here. If only these here interwebs would invent some deal to help convey such things. Oh, the Irony. Oh, the Humanity (still miss ya, jjs).

And, Hudson’ll have the best ERA (adjusted, if you prefer), or WHIP on the team, minimum of 140 innings for all. If so, you can’t use co-sign. If not, I’ll ship you a nice 1.75 of The Cheapest Whiskey Available. Bet?
BFLIO, try making a strong statement on here that people disagree with without adding IMO and see how many rip you a new one for implying you know everything. heath – my stew was okay, not great, not bad, I really wanted to use beef shortribs but the butcher didnt have any, that extra fat adds flavor that veal just can’t muster !
Steve, done and done. ERA or WHIP, minimum 140 IP. That 1.75 (which’ll be lower than Huddy’s WHIP) is gonna make for an expensive flat rate package, though.
Dick Bennett was one of college’s great hoop coaches. I used to get to green Bay on business a few times a year and saw his team play. When UW-Madison had an opening, Bennett was consensus selection. Later on, when I started coaching my daughter in Chicago area hoops, I learned what they already knew: defense wins basketball games. If you can more laterally quickly, you can play for the Bennetts.
unbelievable what happened to Willie Taveras today. Can you imagine the converstaion he had from coach/coaches? “Hey kid, sorry to have to tell you, but you’ve been traded to Oakland. But don’t bother packing your bags yet, son. Oakland has designated you for assignment already.” Ouch. That’s gotta hurt.
Judging from those qoutes DOB got from Bobby today it seems like he’s leaning towards Heyward getting some time in AAA before being thrust into MLB. I know he said the kid is special and different from a lot of other prospects, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Cox wants Damon. Just to be sure.
Who the hell am I kiddin … I want Damon on my team.
If Willie Taveras winds up looking for a non-guaranteed contract, he might be the perfect 2 month fill-in for the spot we’re warming for Heyward. Would be a really mediocre poor man’s leadoff hitter. IMO.
No, I’m saying that if we’re looking for a 25th man on the roster who will be cut in June, Willy Taveras could be that guy.
I’d play him if one of McLouth/Diaz/Melky needed a rest. He’d probably get 5-10 starts and then be cut. But yeah, if I was going to play him, I think he’d function best at leadoff. His production would likely suck even more if he wasn’t at leadoff and stealing bases.
Red, I wonder if getting designated for assignment at this point really means anything? Surely he is headed to Spring Training.
In this case, I think it means he’s not gonna play for Oakland. Sure sound like, from the AP story and the MLBTR report, that he was dropeed so they could clear room to sign some other waiver wire players. Taveras might be in spring training, but doesn’t sound like it’ll be with A’s or Reds for sure.
It’s 9 years later and I guess some things never change in Queens…. The New York Mess lives on. I wonder what the guy that wrote this has to say nearly a decade later and things have just gotten much worse ; (
Well that was a complete waste of time. Thanks to horrible organization of the Braves Caravan event today in Marietta I stood out in the cold for 3 hours and didn’t get an autograph. The line would stand still for 20 minutes at a time and not move at all since they didn’t keep any sort if flow going. I missed out by about ten spots in line but there had to be another 500+ dissapointed fans behind me. I sure hope to get the autograph in the mail they promised all of us left out and that it isn’t a brad clontz sticker or something. Sure hope anyone else king to these events has better luck
BASteve, ah yes, the game-changing intangibles of Johnny bleepin’ Damon. Easily adds another couple of mil to his skill set, no? Holy Cornelia and have mercy.
It’s this constant touting of Damon that leads the blog into the nether regions, e.g., a post touting Willy Taveras as anything remotely resembling an actual baseball player. We descend to the depths, and I blame Johnny Damon for all of it.
Well, most of it. I blame Grinch’s return for some, too, LOL.
That’s a real bummer on the autograph. Can’t call a public relations event a success when you have your fans outside in cold weather and not deliver anything at all to them.
My wife is from Syracuse and have been to that Dinosaur BBQ place many times. I tried to tell DOB that it was really good, but he didnt buy it. He roasted me for saying there was good BBQ up north! I am glad to hear I wasnt crazy or had no palate!
Taveras has 2,377 major league at bats with a .276 career average and 194 sb’s. Yep, clearly not “remotely resembling an actual baseball player”.
Clearly sucked last year and all, but that’s why he’d be available for a non-guaranteed contract. We’re dumpster diving these days and I’ve seen worse on a Braves roster.
So, Tommy Hanson went to the Grammys, huh? I kinda like that. He went to the Saints/Vikes game last week as well if I’m not mistaken. I’m starting to think this Tommy fella wants to enjoy life, and wants to take advantage of the things that come along with being a big league pitcher, especially one on the rise. Not gonna settle for high school sweethearts, division titles, having his jersey retired back at the old high school, and having his In My Own Words run on an endless loop on a regional network. Nah, this kid might be dreaming bigger. This kid might be dreaming of banging starlets, winning the World Series and Cy Youngs, and being mentioned everyday on ESPN. Maybe this kid ain’t thinking local, not content on being the BMOC. Maybe he intends to take this sucker worldwide.
ncscoots – not really. My line right now is would he be better than Mitch Jones/Gregor Blanco who I think is currently in line for spot 25 on the roster.
Johnny Damon – Certainly
Willy Taeveras – Yeah, at a minimum contract
Jermaine Dye – No, he’s not worth the million or two guaranteed he’d get
Johnny Gomes – Yeah, he’d platoon better with Diaz than Melky could.
Most anybody else that doesn’t have some ability in either leadoff ability or power I’d rather stick with Mitch Jones.
why are we talking about Tavares on the Braves? He’s a one-dimensional player (speed). Bobby doesn’t like or use speed, so he’d become a undimensional player on this team. Who, knows? Maybe Willie bounces back, but I sure don’t see Braves as the team that would give him that chance. Of course, now that I’ve said that I’m sure they’ll announce a deal within the hour.
I don’t think Schafer hiding an injury, or the seriousness of it is all that serious. He’s so young and has never really been seriously injured before. Thus, how would he really know he’s injured and not just hurting? He doesn’t have much to relate it to in his history. And how would he know that no matter how much he’s hurting, that someone like Chipper or McCann ain’t hurting just as much or that Andruw used to hurt just as much or more when he was beating himself up in center all those years while never taking a day off, and that he’ll look like a punk crying about how much he’s hurting, looking like he’s trying to make an excuse for how bad he’s hitting, or looking like he’s mentally or emotionally defeated and needs time off so he’s using his wrist as an excuse for quitting on himself and his team. And then there’s that whole competitive Wally Pipp aspect of it. You step away for a few to rest, and let someone else lay claim on what was yours, you’re scared you may never get it back.
doesn’t surprise me that the Caravan was a zoo. They just need to have the players sitting at a table, the same table, line people up, and let the people move through. When Chipper is there he needs to be at one end of the table because people will want to have a quick picture and using judgement the other most popular/top player at the other end of the table. Limit people to one item signed per player.
That being said, I wish the zoo of the Caravan went a little farther north into North Carolina
we do not need Tavares with our OF glut unless he is willing to start in AAA. He has no power and is not a good contact hitter. He does have great speed but that is it
Can we all make a promise that Tommy Hanson will never again be called “Big Red” on this blog? I hate that Big Red crap. Mostly because Chip Caray carries on so much in his forced use of it during broadcasts, but also because it sucks
Experience and maturity, Braveheart. No magic potion for it, no easy way to get it, and few ways to be successful (or, at least, fulfill potential) without it.
Yet, I’m sure many bloggers here think that Heyward, for example, won’t face moments of bewilderment as a rook. They’ll selectively forget the comments of players such as Medlen, Hanson, et al, who, to a man, always and always talk about having to “figure it out” at the big league level, about how different it truly is from their minor league experiences.
I’ve said this in the past, but, what the heck: Schafer might now have the mental toughness worthy of his self-confidence, and that might make all the difference for him in the future.
Redstick, if you can’t see the beauty and genius of a Pierre, Gathright, Tavares, Freel outfield, I don’t know what to tell ya. You’re out to lunch, buddy
Steve, that’s why I use emoticons. Quite honestly, I don’t like them either; it makes my posts look like a 14 year old girl typed them. If I don’t though, every single one of them gets misunderstood.
There is truth in this, however, emoticons really annoy the crap out of me, and I’d rather people assumed I was constantly pi-sed off versus using a damn smiley face to help express my tone. To each his own, of course.
I know they are pretty well set in the bullpen, but does anyone think the braves might sign a bargain bin SP to a minor league deal for some extra depth incase a starter goes down? Still some pretty secent ones out there (as far as the bargain bin goes. Heck, it’s better than the CD bargain bin I was browsing through for an hour while sitting in line waiting to not see any of the braves at the caravan)
Only the nickname in the clubouse counts, and I kinda doubt that it’s “Big Red”, LOL.
I would have used an emoticon there (only men secure in their manhood can use emoticons, after all), but, I didn’t want to annoy Salamander any more than necessary, LOL.
scoots – read the last sentence of my previous post. I don’t really care how others write if they’re making points that are worth reading (and your posts are almost always worth reading). I personally just don’t like using emoticons.
Cool. No more emoticons. As I said, I don’t like them anyway. I just happen to be sarcastic and or jokingly provocative on about 95% of my posts (the rest are incoherent) and I expect I’ll grow weary of explaining myself. Scratch that; I just won’t explain myself.
SoWeGa, perhaps I’m a bit less radical than you, but I think I’d try “Just for Men” first.
There is truth in this, however, emoticons really annoy the crap out of me, and I’d rather people assumed I was constantly pi-sed off versus using a damn smiley face to help express my tone. To each his own, of course.
I hear ya. Better to be thought of as a Decepticon than to use an emoticon
Scoots, I’d love to take you up on your offer, but I have much work to do this evening. Perhaps we can pile on and abuse the unsuspecting and helpless another day. In fact, I’m sure of it (emoticon).
Grinch, very well. I have gotten into the habit of abusing only those who deserve it, I’m afraid, so it may take me a while to get back up to speed on waylaying the mere innocent, again.
Gotta check out House and 24, anyway. Monday’s a bad night for gratuitous stomping.
Well played on Willy T. What a waste of a major league roster spot. I’d rather have Josh Anderson, simply because he’ll get the major league minimum.
The love affair with Taveras absolutely baffles me. He can run. He has no power. He never gets on base. He’s not even a particularly good OF. But he’s fast. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Anders – Definitely a fan of Dinosaur BBQ. One of the better places I’ve come across in my limited exposure to the stuff since leaving Carolina at too young an age. Now out here in LA still looking for something to compare…
As far as the broadcast team goes, I’d heard they’re generally well regarded. Maybe I just can’t get past the fact that they seem to be talking about a team other than the Braves most of the time…all kidding aside I could never put my finger on it with Darling; He certainly knows his stuff and speaking as a Newhouse graduate, I can’t criticize his technique. Dude just bugs me.
DOB, just sitting around contemplating salaries and wishing mine was more than it is and started wondering how Major League players are paid. I think I read once that they got paid every two weeks (or twice a month)but at what point do they begin drawing a check? Spring Training? Are they paid year round? Just curious.
Man…wouldn’t it be great to get PAID to play baseball?!
I haven’t posted in a long time…actually since pagination(sp?) started…..but something’s been bugging me for a while, and I was wondering if I was the only one. Does anyone think Bowman’s style (specifically his overuse of the words/phrasing: seemingly, provides, provided the opportunity, possesses, possesses the opportunity, etc.) is bothersome?. His unnecessarily complicated sentence structure can be irritating. I appreciate his content (and check the site daily for just that reason) but his copy leaves a lot to be desired. DOB…not to pander, but I enjoy your style. I, like most on here, just want more sooner….and clairvoyance is always appreciated.

Braveheart,
Well played on Willy T.
