Hard to tell. Losing and getting outplayed might make Wall a little uncomfortable. He’s really facing adversity for the first time. I wouldn’t read too much into it right now. Though, it is worth watching.
Without sounding redundant, any word on what Cox expects out of Lee Hyde? I was hearing that they were very hign on this prospect especially since it seems he has turned the corner.
I am not going to say that Hampton’s acquisition was wise. But it wasnt incompetent. His injuries (which I presumed to be main point) started more than 2 years after he became a brave. Those two full seasons he 31 and 29 gmaes respectively. and then it started going downhill. How do you think they could’ve predicted his body breaking down so rapidly? Putz – a couple of months into a season. See- not the same.
Smoltz – they didnt give him the money. Putz wanted the $9.1 mil option (big surprise there isnt it) and they could’ve easily avoided it by not trading for him or voiding it on medical grounds (if they had subjected him to a medical). They didnt and wanted to save face by lying later. How can anyone say that is the same as the Smoltz thing. How?
Anders, what is with the Hampton stuff? No one ever said the Mets acquisition of Putz was bad, I believe they were criticizing the fact that he didn’t have a physical. No one here I believe ever said that given what happened to Hampton injury wise while he was here that it didn’t turn out to be a bad deal, or else you really just chose to ignore all what was said about the guy during all that injury time.
And on Smoltz, we offered the guy an incentive laden contract that would have come to the same amount that he could have earned in Boston. The reason for that was because he was coming off injuries. Smoltz was angry because he believed he was owed more guaranteed money based on his time with the organization not because he believed they mishandeled an injury situation. The way I read it with Putz is that he believes they mishandled him injury wise and that affects his money because that affects his career. Players will always want more money but not all players will accuse their former teams of mishandling them injury wise. Thats where the diffrence comes in for me.
That seems to be the issue at hand…I thought Diaz statistically performed well in the lead-off role. However, he isn’t even guaranteed to get a majority of the playing time this year. So to answer your question, I think Nate batting lower in the lineup has greater affects than whoever you put at the leadoff position. Again, just my opinion.
I bet Wren offered Damon a G Anderson contract. It’s there unless Boras can do better, and today, right now, he can’t. If Boras does find Damon more money, I bet it’s a team he does not want to spend a season with.
Man, are we going to get this many quotes from now on? Nice bonus, DOB.
Jim: Packline defense has been huge for our high school program. I haven’t seen Va. yet this season but his dad was pretty much the guru with it. Great defense.
I agree with your post on Damon. It’s definitely been strange how the market has been for him, such a proven commodity. Similar to Garret last year, Damon is looking at taking a huge pay cut this year. It’s almost comical at how often DOB has mentioned Damon and the possible effects he can have on this lineup. Seems to make so much sense for the Braves…..and I’m still not ruling it out, simply based on the words of “the man” (DOB) himself.
I wasn’t aware he was being outplayed. They jumped on Vandy pretty quickly and the guard from South Carolina was 9-29. I guess we’ll see what happens. Tough to understand why he would be mad about a loss two games ago though.
Anders – I think IF all the key Braves players stay healthy, (and I know that’s a BIG if) but I think if they stay healthy and perform like we hope they all will…then I don’t see any reason the Braves won’t compete for the East.
That’s more than I can say for the Mutts…opps…I mean, Mets (LOL).
pryguy So to answer your question, I think Nate batting lower in the lineup has greater affects than whoever you put at the leadoff position.

Would it have been better to temper the amount of pressure being put on Heyward in the current scenario that the LF is “his to lose”? Seems like if he doesn’t make the club out of camp it could easily feel like a big disappointment to him, thus affecting his confidence.
With all of the effort by the staff to not rush him or mess up his development it seems like a better idea would be to downplay his chance of making the team out of ST and say that he is a potential option but he probably would start the season in AAA. That way if you do give him the job to start the season he feels like he came in and took the job as opposed to not losing it. Agree?
And I don’t think you can underestimate the intangibles that he would bring to the club. (Tommy P)

Thanx for the 3:50 Hudson quote. I was talking to my brother about the same thing, the Dude is tough and fought through the aches. He was probably pitching when other guys would not have.
Cocerning Dye,it seems the Cubs thought enough of him to offer but the dollars weren’t right.I still believe he would be a better fit than JD.Hey,he is even a former Brave. You know how we love our former players.Oh,I forgot,he’s not a pitcher. What dou you think Dave?
I talked to Freeman about this yesterday on the caravan. Said he hasn’t heard anything from the Braves. He understands that he didn’t get a lot of at-bats at Double A before hurting the wrist so he understands if he begins there. He said Triple A would be fine to.
he is a great guy. He deflected questions about himself to talk about Heyward. Said Heyward looks like a beast. 6′6 248lbs. No body fat at all.
I’ll have to tell you though, of all of the BBQ places I’ve been. If your ever driving through Arkansas and pass through Ozark. You’ve got to spot in and try Rivertown BBQ. This is the best BBQ place I’ve ever been. The ribs are excellent. The only problem is.. it’s always packed.
He laughed when I told him to be ready because I don’t think Glaus will hold up all season long. Freeman said he is going to do everything he can do to be ready this season.
He told us a great story about how his dad would pull him out of school and throw him batting practice until it got dark.
Has anyone recieved their 2010 prospect handbook yet. I ordered mine the first week of January. They started shipping last week but it still is not here. I love that book
Heath – making a veal and chook mushroom stew, been simmering that baby for about 4 hours now… woo hoo..
“Into the Wild” – loved that movie too and agree with several here about “The Hangover”…. not as funny as I hoped (I do love the tiger in the car scene but !
We are looking at the situation on different levels. You look at Nate as our best option at lead-off. I look at Nate as being a more productive piece to the lineup lower in the lineup. Not to say either of us are wrong, but I would like to get more value out of a hitter rather than less value just because he is simply our best option to hit there.
Regardless, it will all be a moot point after Damon signs:)
There’s gotta be a good Grinch/Bate-a-Meat joke. I can’t find it, but I know it’s there.
And, Grinch using “co-sign” AND emoticons? Not sure which confuses my world more. Somebody, make it stop. Or, at least, force the guy to come up with more of those women/rack-of-ribs lines.
I’m ashamed to admit, I like Jon Miller. Granted, I don’t watch many Sunday-night games, and my opinion is based on his Giants-time, but there are many far, far worse. I share Lew’s opinion of the road team’s feeds on Extra Innings. Jon Miller is Scully-in-his-prime compared to the Milwaukee or Florida guys. Or Rob Dibble; simple words cannot convey how bad that guy is.
Lew- you forgot to roll your R’s like Miller would. It’s more like Rafael FOURDDDDD CALL. Miller’s a tool and is the reason I don’t watch ESPN Sunday Night baseball… and will probably be the reason poor Joe Morgan will drink himself to an early grave. Can you imagine sitting next to that?
Anders-I don’t know. I wouldn’t watch Miller do a Mets’ game unless the Braves were playing them and even then, I’d listen to Hernandez, Darling and What’s His Name on XM before I’d listen to Jon Miller or Joe Morgan.
I can honestly say Darling bugs me more than Miller. Not by a lot, but damn. Going to school in Syracuse I’d watch Braves-Mets games on SNY. Brutal, that broadcast team.
BAS- I’ll give you the fact that Morgan is pretty bland… but it’s probably as a result of never being able to get in a damn word with that fool next to him. I’ll give Morgan a pass because of his work environment.

BAS- I’ll give you the fact that Morgan is pretty bland… but it’s probably as a result of never being able to get in a damn word with that fool next to him. I’ll give Morgan a pass because of his work environment.”
From what I’ve heard from Morgan, the less he says, the better. At any rate, he tends to repeat everything he says anyway.
Dang, am I really in the minority thinking that John Miller over-pronounces everything and is one of the worst baseball announcers out there? That’s cool, I can accept that. Still doesn’t change my opinion, or that’d I’d rather listen to a llama gargle than hear Miller call a baseball game.
Going to school in Syracuse I’d watch Braves-Mets games on SNY. Brutal, that broadcast team. (Matty Ross)
Gotta say you’re way off base here. They are actually viewed as one of the better groups nationally from what I understand. Darling gets playoff work and I believe might become a network guy some day so he can’t be that bad. Hernandez is not interested in that type of commitment. He likes his time in the Hamptons too much that a three man crew affords him.
I’m guessing you didn’t major in sports media up there under the dome? But you’ve been to the Dinosaur Barbeque – right?
dogs, loved the guy as a player (or at least his numbers; never saw him play). Best 2B in the history of the game, perhaps. But with a microphone, not so much.
Heath, good point. Drop some bbq-knowledge on me. And, can someone explain why ‘cue is so expensive out here? I though the whole point was cooking cheap cuts of meat. Out here, it’s like eating fast-food, at the cost of a steakhouse.
On another note, it seems to me that actual, living, breathing Atlanta Braves were playing catch with a baseball a short while ago. Me likey.
Anders – ever been to that shack BBQ place on the way to Bridgehampton, always packed with cars… might have to go try it this week as am in Quogue… alone with the dog
I’m sorry, Steve. Would you please type up a template of the way you’d like me to custom tailor my posts to your liking? It would make it so much easier to serve you. Or better yet, why don’t you just post what you want to read from me yourself under my name? Or better yet still, if you don’t like my posts, just scroll down like everyone else.
I like the Mets guys. Certainly one of the best, at least in the NL, imo. Great insight from the two players; having both a pitcher, and a position-player to give you both sides really works, at least for them. The bald guy is a little to…bald, or…something. He’s definitely the weak link, though still good, and I can’t say why I think that. Don’t see ‘em enough I suppose, and the two players are so impressive.
On another note, it seems to me that actual, living, breathing Atlanta Braves were playing catch with a baseball a short while ago. Me likey. -BAS
Well, we might not agree on announcers, but I will gladly raise a glass with you on this. Baseball activities are getting close enough to almost smell it. Cheers.
Heath, what’s for supper? My wife just cooked scrambled eggs, onions, lettuce and avocado with bite sized pieces of ribeye steak all rolled up in a healthy wheat flatbread. Yum,Yum
Just tryin’ to get a rise, Sir Grinch, just tryin’ to get a rise. I like poking the stick from a coupla thousand miles away combined with the internet anonymity. Without a doubt, I’ve loved your Ali-like return to the ring, but you’ve become a bit mellow. I just wanted to see a sliver of the ol’ you.
Plus, I was able to take a shot at Tomahawkin and others; I may have mentioned these topics before. It’s not all about you, ya know…
Doggy – Ever been to Cliffs Elbow Room in Jamesport? Been around for over 50 years. It’s on the other fork from where you are of course but great steaks. You can hit some of the wineries while you’re on the north fork. Nothing fancy for sure at Cliff’s, go as casual as you like. The name does it justice. Small place and they cram them in. I have to warn I haven’t been there in a few years though. Just hasn’t been in the rotation for some reason.
That’s right. I’m sayin’ it! It has to be said (spoken in Chris Rock’s voice)!!
Tim Hudson top 5 in NL Cy Young voting next year. Braves will have 3 of the top 15, possibly 3 in the top 10. Yeah. I realize that unless other guys get votes, the list might not go 10 or 15 deep.
But I was buying it before he (Hudson) started selling it. Now I’m thoroughly convinced my opinion (and the ones that matter – Wren and Bobby), are the correct one.
Not only will Hudson be a better value at 9 million than Vazquez at 11.5 million. If they’re money was equal, Hudson would still have been the better value.
I’ve gone from expecting a very good year from Tim Hudson, to expecting a MONSTER season from Tim Hudson.
I also suspect with Bobby referring to him as Ace material that Hudson surely will be the opening day starter.
mets suck on and off the field,GM sucks, broadcast team sucks, and the new stadium sucks. they are a shadow in new york and always will be..man that sucks

based on what you are hearing, Heyward in RF on opening day? yes or no — Rbo from SC:
Rbo, I don’t know. Not meaning to avoid the question, I really just don’t know. And I don’t have as strong a feeling as some others apparently do.
If forced to predict, I’d say he gets the RF job. Unless the Braves sign Johnny Damon, then I think they would be more inclined to start with Diaz/Cabrera in RF and let Heyward stay in Triple-A a couple months.
mets suck on and off the field,GM sucks, broadcast team sucks, and the new stadium sucks. they are a shadow in new york and always will be..man that sucks (Andrew in PA)
Heard you got knocked out of the spelling bee last night when asked to spell the state you hail from. Talk abut sucking. Maybe you should move to Ohio, make it easy on yourself. Just a thought.
You used my name (and only my name) twice in a three sentence post. That makes it all about me, IMO. That’s another thing I wanted to mention to you; I don’t like the way you don’t capitalize IMO. Fix it for me? ‘preciate it! Besides, if it’s not all about me, what value could it have? (nod, wink…is that better than the colored ones?)
Also, if I sounded the same note with every post, I’d eventually be like Gilbert Gottfried or Dice Clay; the same shtick wears thin if overused. Plus, it isn’t a shtick anyway; people occasionally change moods. And are sometimes sober as opposed to drunk. But your concern is touching.

DAP,
We are looking at the situation on different levels.
