Great to hear the news that Damon is still a possibility for the Braves. If the Braves were willing to take a chance on Garrett Anderson’s defense, they should certainly not worry about Damon’s defense/arm. Damon is an upgrade over Garrett Anderson. Last year, the Braves signed Anderson because they needed a veteran presence in the outfield of Schafer, Franceour, and Matt Diaz.
This year, the Braves enter Spring Training with Nate McClouth, Matt Diaz, Melky Cabrera, and Jason Heyward in the mix. Adding Johnny Damon to that group improves it dramatically. It might allow the Braves to let Jason Heyward have some at bats in AAA to begin the year. It would also allow the Braves to platoon Matt Diaz and Melky Cabrera. I hate this for Matt because I think he has proven that he needs to be playing everyday. But, if Melky shows well, then the Braves can trade him for a prospect(s) and call up Heyward.

Pete Moylan packed on a little winter weight during his three months back in Australia. “Only 10 pounds,” he said, smiling to indicate perhaps it was a bit more
What diet staple was most responsible for the poundage?

yea, hearing from his interview last week. heyward has probably gained about 10 pounds of muscle this winter and is filling out, he could be really something special this year.
If you want to know how to play good college hoop defense, watch UVA. Tony Bennett’s “pack-line” defense really works and is the difference in UVA this year. Not nearly as much talent as UNC, but they flat out whoped them. UVA broke down in transition and made some bad offensive decisions the other night or they would have also beaten Tech.
He’s admitted that he was less the truthful last year with team officials and trainers in regards to his wrist, never let them know how bad it was until finally he had to be shut down in September and have season-ending surgery.DOB
Just asking because I might have missed some vital detail (or you have answered this earlier; in which case, apologies). How is this different from what Anthony Lerew did? Both played with injuries that they didnt reveal to the team completely and might have cost the team some wins. The team was said to be livid with Lerew but from all accounts arent the same with Schafer. Why?
(He’s admitted that he was less the truthful last year with team officials and trainers in regards to his wrist, never let them know how bad it was until finally he had to be shut down in September and have season-ending surgery.) (DOB)
So Schafer was “untruthful” last year and that’s ok? Yet you guys take everything that Putz has put out there as Gospel? Players tell “untruths” when it suits them. Unless you think telling these “untruths” is just a Braves thing?
I asked Bobby Cox if he thought there were big questions with the lineup:
“I think the only question is whether or not we’re giving Heyward a chance to compete and make the team. He’s awfully young, but he’s awfully talented, too…. We’re not going in with a set lineup right now.”
Snotboogie- very fair question about Schafer. Guy is just to squirrely for me. I don’t know, something about him.
DOB- I came to this kinda late and you may have already listened to them and commented on them, but The Drums “Summertime” EP is really quite good. I don’t know how I missed them back when released in September.
Cox on not being positive right now about Heyward and the RF job: “No, we’re not. He’s virtually skipping Triple-A if he makes the team. That doesn’t happen often. But in his case we just feel that he should, if he’s going to come to spring training, be given a crack at it.”
Rob from SC, I absolutely love the sound of that outfield but think that will be 2011. I really dont think they are gonna rely on 2/3 of the outfield with such little experience. It might be OK to begin the season and the first couple of months but those guys are gonna have to learn to deal with the 162 game grind. Heyward has only played in 127 and 97 games, Schaefer even less in the last two (although he did play 136 in 2007).
Probably another reason that Schafer is getting a pass is that the Braves had no one else to put in center field. Gregor Blanco was not exactly going to be a great improvement. Hence, the need to go get McLouth.
Anders – now you’ve got it! People from down here are allowed to do it, because they’re nice people. Dudes from NYC can’t, because that’s where those bad people live.
One more Cox quote on Heyward: “We saw him quite a bit last spring, and he was very impressive. Not just hitting, but in all phases of the game. He’s a good runner, he’s a good thrower, and he’s always hit. So… And he’s got great makeup. That goes a lot way, if you’re thinking about taking a 20-year old on your team. That’s a huge part of it.”
He added: “But if he doesn’t make it, that’s fine too. He can spend some time in Triple-A and see how it works out.”
andersSo Schafer was “untruthful” last year and that’s ok?
hey man, that question makes you seem clueless. is it ok? of course it isnt! there has been almost a year of discussion about how stupid it was for schafer to keep his injury a secret. we have gone on and on about it. so you come and act like we think its ok that schafer wasnt truthful? what are you, new?
Probably another reason that Schafer is getting a pass is that the Braves had no one else to put in center field. Gregor Blanco was not exactly going to be a great improvement. -Moe Berg
True, but if he had been DLed earlier, he might not have aggravated a bad injury. Batting near 200 with all those strikeouts, Gregor Blanco could’ve done the same.
BTW- SnotBoogie identified the 600 lb. Gorilla in the room at 1:20. Those are the kind of questions that would have been immediately fired at Cox and/or Wren up this way in the land of “Bad People” Not – “How’s the new truck running?” {:

“BTW- SnotBoogie identified the 600 lb. Gorilla in the room at 1:20.” – Anders
Ah no he didn’t. The answer to his question is Schafer is better than Lerew. Talent overrides bad behavior most of the time. It’s the same reason the Mets haven’t tried to void Beltran’s contract or recoup some money from him. He’s too talented to get rid of.
Just got done watching The Hangover. While very funny, it’s been WAY over-hyped imo. Perhaps, like many good comedies, the humor may grow on you upon a 2nd or 3rd viewing?
But I don’t think it was as good as either Knocked Up or 40 Year Old Virgin.
Wish you had been at the Varsity some great questions that you guys don’t ask (or probably wouldn’t print) from the fans. Watching Wren squirm when Huddy was asked if he would intentionally drill another team’s player was almost as much fun as watching Hoss answer the question about post-season officiating.
N8 (February 1st, 2010 1:58 pm EST): Just got done watching The Hangover. While very funny, it’s been WAY over-hyped imo. Perhaps, like many good comedies, the humor may grow on you upon a 2nd or 3rd viewing?

I thought it was pretty unfunny, myself. All the jokes were just, “OHH, dude, I was so wasted last night!”
Zach Galifianakis was funny, that’s about it, I thought.
I was expecting another Knocked Up when I saw it. It was certainly no Knocked Up.
Anders – Thing is, I dont claim this is similar to the Putz thing. These are two incidents over the space of 2 years. With the Mets, you have had more than your share of injury related scandals.
Reyes – last summer
Church – summer 2008
Beltran -last month and
Putz – apparently offseason 2008
Thats 4 of the top of my head and I am sure others can chime in with a few more. There is something much more fishy when things like this happen so regularly. Add to that the classless dismissal of Willie Randolph and you realize that it doesnt take a bitter division rival to ask the question “WTF is going on here?. Savvy.
Cox on Hudson: “He’s strong, and he’s an ace. We forget that: Huddy, before he went down, was an ace. And still is in my mind. I mean, nobody wanted to lose Vazquez, of course. But our rotation will be good.”
There hasnt been much talk of Damon on here as of late, did everyone finally get tired of it? LOL. I still think Braves are bidding their time and will pounce when the time is right. They are just watching the market dry up for him and will come in with a 4-5 million dollar offer last minute, just watch.
Snotboogie – Yopu mean like the “classy” way Glavine was handled last season coming back from injury? Or how about the Mike Hampton Saga? How about Smoltzie? Add Lerew and Schafer to the pile. Crap happens everywhere. It just gets a hell of a lot more play up in this neck of the woods – Putz basically said so himself.
I’m watching the hangover now from first hand experience.
Is there a proportional relation between the amount of hotness and the amount of crazy? —StingerSplash
Yes, there is. It’s one of the few universal truths.
Lew, Werth would only need four to exceed the Edge. But he’d have to have the baseball equiv. of a $250,000 dollar effects rig to look like he was doing more. Maybe a different colored bat made out of nearly extinct wood for every swing?
Cox said he won’t decide on opening-day starter or cleanup spot until spring training (yes, he was already asked about opening-day starter, 2-1/2 weeks before spring training).
When asked if McLouth would lead off again, he said: “We’ll see how it all works out in spring training. I don’t see why not, right now. We’ll see.”
Then too, something tells me the Bradys probably have a pretty nice bathtub. It may be equipped with gold plated stirrups and forceps, and its own robotic midwife.
I asked Bobby Cox if he might have to be careful with Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito. This was his reply:
“I don’t know if you can pitch them four days in a row, but certainly at times I think you can go three. Depends on the number of pitches they throw and things like that, how clean the inning is.”
Then he mentioned that Moylan could also pitch in the ninth if needed.
I don’t know Anders there is a difference in being classy and dealing with injury situations with some of your top players. Think you’re comparing apples and oranges here.
What did the braves do to Hampton besides wait for the guy to become healthy? The Glavine thing isn’t like the Smoltz thing at all. Smoltz wanted more guaranteed money from a team that no longer has the payroll it did when Smoltz was younger. I don’t blame the braves for that one. The Glavine thing could have been handled better but less than a year later the guy is considering coming back to the organization. Had to be a little mending of the fences there.
Then too, something tells me the Bradys probably have a pretty nice bathtub. It may be equipped with gold plated stirrups and forceps, and its own robotic midwife. –Grinch
Grinch, Have you ever witnessed a child birth in person? (Don’t answer that.) I hope that tub has a Scrubbing Bubbles dispenser, too.
if Heyward is 245 pounds, he wears it well. I had always heard how big he is and I was surprised at how thin he appeared when I saw him last year at Myrtle Beach. Long, lean, and strong with a sweet swing – I do see why people will compare him to Strawberry or Winfield (a young Dave Winfield)
Cox on KAWAKAMI: “If he’s your fifth guy, you’re talking about a solid No. 5 guy. I always thought if you could get 10 wins out of your No. 5 guy, you’re way ahead of the game. And he’s certainly capable of doing that, easily.”
Nearly everywhere you read and look it has Glaus hitting 4th. I love the signing for him but I would rather have a .300 hitter with breakout power hitting 4th. Escobar is not a proto cleanup guy but with what we have he is the right choice. Glaus is a .255 lifetime guy and a perfect 6th guy at this point of his career.
Yopu mean like the “classy” way Glavine was handled last season coming back from injury? Or how about the Mike Hampton Saga? How about Smoltzie? Add Lerew and Schafer to the pile. Anders
Typical Anders. Most of those are not pertinent to this discussion. I’ll explain why.
Mike Hampton- That was never anything to do with the Braves or how they handled it. Not a whimper of a scandal. He was happy the way the team treated him, even going so far as to negotiate coming back to the team last year. Also his injuries, if you hadnt noticed, have continued even with his new team.
Smotlz – Simple. He wanted more guaranteed money than the Braves were willing to offer. He continues to do so, this offseason too. How is that classless, for a cash-strapped organization.
Glavine – Well I’ll grant you that. But they have dont everything in their power to put that rare mis-step behind them (including a public apology from John Schuerholz). He is planning on joining the Braves FO in a versatile role barely 7 months since that incident. That doesnt exactly scream “classless”, does it.
nick not Nick, Escobar is not a proto cleanup guy but with what we have he is the right choice. Glaus is a .255 lifetime guy and a perfect 6th guy at this point of his career.
i dont think so. in the cleanup spot, id rather have the career .255 BA .500 slg% guy than i would the career .301 BA with a .426 slg%. i honestly think escobar is a really good #2 hitter. but he definitely is NOT the best option for cleanup. he is several spots down on the list, actually.
Brian: The Diaz question is almost certainly directly tied to Heyward’s situation. If Heyward wins the right-field job, then Diaz will not be playing every day. Cabrera has to play somewhere.
So it’s too early to know how much Diaz will play, and where.
Not to stir the pot, but your conversations with Cox regarding Heyward seem very guarded (maybe Gwinnett, maybe Atlanta). Who knows, maybe Damon? We just have no clue.
Speaking of Melky Cabrera, here’s what Cox said: “We’re getting a pretty good ballplayer. Very good outfielder, throws good. He’s solid. He’s not going to be a big-time home run hitter, but a good player. You can win with those types of guys. He can play center very well, right, left — doesn’t matter.”
Snotboogie- You think the Braves acquisition of Hampton was a wise one? That goes to competence which I do believe is relevant.
As for Smoltz – yep, he wanted more money. So did Putz. He wanted that $9.1 mil option. You’re naive to think any different. Now he’s making like the Mets marched him to the mound with explosives strapped to him.
Making mountains out of molehills is exactly what the media does up here which is my point. Down that way – not so much. There’s your apples and oranges Jake W.
Any thoughts on Wall’s comments about Calipari? Sounds to me that it’s minor, but Wall is either stubborn about his play or questioning his coach’s honesty. Haven’t seen UK play in a while.
TIM HUDSON on not having any restrictions now with his elbow:
“I’m past all that. That’s what was great last year, being able to go through all my rehab and then come back to pitch the last month. Then have the whole offseason of still recovering and still doing rehab through the offseason.
“Right now, knock on wood, I can’t believe how good my arm feels. I just hope as I get the pitch counts up that it keeps feeling like this. But it’s stronger than it’s been in eight years.”
Call me crazy, but I don’t think Hudson has been right physically for 2 years and he still had a very good 2008. The Dude is tough and took the ball until he just couldn’t. Expect great things in the second half of 2010 for Mr. Hudson.
Not to call Cox stubborn, but he doesn’t see the same things we do with McLouth as the leadoff hitter. I just feel he is so much better suited down in the lineup.
Maybe he (McClouth) isn’t. Maybe Damon is the leadoff hitter, Cox didn’t seem overly committed to McClouth leading off (DOB’s 2:17 post of Cox quote). I’d like to be the straw that stirs the drink.
Hudson on being motivated: “My goal, any time after I’ve signed a contract, is to out-perform the contract. The last thing anybody wants to do is sign a contract and then feel like they’ve let the team or the organization down.
“At the end of the day, when this contract is up, I hope everybody looks back on it as a bargain for the organization. That’s my goal.”

Why?

Rob from SC, I absolutely love the sound of that outfield but think that will be 2011. I really dont think they are gonna rely on 2/3 of the outfield with such little experience. It might be OK to begin the season and the first couple of months but those guys are gonna have to learn to deal with the 162 game grind. Heyward has only played in 127 and 97 games, Schaefer even less in the last two (although he did play 136 in 2007).

He’s a good runner, he’s a good thrower, and he’s always hit. So… And he’s got great makeup. That goes a lot way, if you’re thinking about taking a 20-year old on your team.
