Mr.J-It was at the Sub and Steak at Five Points-had a poster of Herschel breaking the SEC scoring record in Yudi’s. They were actually two brothers who owned the place-their names were Bob and Lance Uhde. Lance owned Yudi’s across from the arch. Bob got nailed for making book at his place.

Painted the SEC mascots eating subs and the like and got free food for the family for a month. In grad school, you do what you need to make some bucks. I don’t thinkl it’s there anymore, but heard about it for years after.

Think I’ll find out if my Clemson Tigers are men or boys tonight. Duke off a loss, and there are few better than Coach K at getting his team ready after one. Tigers got run out of the gym in Durham this year (just like they ran Duke out of Littlejohn last year), so they ought to be plenty ticked. Especially after blowing a winnable road game in Atlanta this week. And nobody talks about it much, but, trust me on this: Littlejohn is a brutal place to play on the road. Just…brutal.

So, the planets seem aligned for a pretty interesting game. Time for the Tigers to prove out.

DOB, what kinda player do you see Schafer as? Is he more the guy we saw in spring training or the guy that wont make contact enough to be an impact type of player? Or is he some where in between?

It just seems to me that if he is even minor impact player, I cant see too much of a future for Matt Diaz as his salary continues to rise through arbitration…

Lew,

It must have been Lance, then, if Bob had to go away. I didn’t know him- he was in to see if my mother was around. My mom and dad had a business on E. Clayton St. in the early 90’s, and my mom ate lunch at Yudi’s frequently. I think they would sing the blues to each other about whose business was worse. Anyway, the guy’s in some other business now, but happened to be in the neighborhood.

Kentucky did manage to beat that Connecticut team that just laid the wood to #1 Texas.

I wouldn’t give too much credence to Duke’s opponents, per any computer rankings. Krzyzewski knows how to “game” the schedule with the best of them.
He rarely plays a true road game, and he owns the ACC officials.

There is a reason why Duke has melted down in the NCAA tournament consistently since 2005. Krzyzewski doesn’t have tough players, and he doesn’t get them toughened up during the season.

Redstick19, you (and I, and many/most/damn near everyone) might not think homers are the only way to win a ballgame, but Bobby Cox and the corpse of Earl Weaver disagree wholeheartedly. Which is why we don’t really need Damon; he wouldn’t get the green light anyway. We need eight Adam Dunn’s. :-)

Go Dawgs! I detest college basketball, but I’m happy if even our equestrian team beats Tennessee. Come to think of it, they usually do. As does our gym team, and tennis. And now that we’ve got a legit DC maybe our football team will too.

I think its funny how Cashman came out and straight up said, we arent signing Damon unless he accepts a low offer and the GM for the Tigers says, we have no interest whatsoever in Damon. Yet, when we ask Frank Wren about Damon, he only says, we like this team as constructed. He never answers the question directly, kind of side steps it all the time, which makes me wonder if he has made an offer and is just keeping it secret.

If you were making the call, how careful would you be this spring to make the right one on Heyward?

Glad you asked DOB.

If I had to make the call, Heyward would start the year in AAA for several reasons. First, the team still operates on a corporate budget, and have young players like Jurrjens, Hanson, and maybe even Freeman/Schafer to consider in long-term contracts down the road. Delaying Heywards arb-eligibility has contractual benefits and flexibility down the road.

Second, and I hate this argument, the dude still has less than 500 ab above A ball.

My third argument: I like the idea of playing both Diaz and Cabrera in the outfield to start the year. One reason is because I really think Melky is going to be a good player for us. Also, you give Melky a chance to play well so that he and/or Schafer can be showcased for a potential trade later in the year.

And lastly, it gives Schafer a chance to prove himself as well. If he plays well his first month in AAA, then why not let him play a month here before Heyward’s arb clock date?

I hate the argument of making a player season in the minors. If he’s ready, he’s ready. But in Heyward’s case, there’s other factors I mentioned above that I think just make sense here.

Steve from OH

January 23rd, 2010

Bobby’s–I agree with your first two points, but I don’t really like Melky as a starter for us very much at all. I’m more concerned about the financial risk of promoting him early. If he’s amenable to a long-term contract, then fine, open 2010 with him. I think he’s probably ready now, but I do agree that some PT in AAA in April won’t hurt him at all, but IMO it is a huge risk to promote him early without signing him long-term. Hell, I’d sign him long-term today if he’d accept a Longoria-type deal.

Not surprised Brandon enjoys hearing Dickie V. Last year, when Kentucky and Carolina were playing hoops, at the sports bar in Denver where Carolina fans hang out, some UK fans were there, too. We had a bet on which coach Dickie V would pimp for more in the game: Coach K or Pitino. (K won … barely.)

I enjoyed the announcer swap Wednesday (even though the Heels lost), because Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy actually described the game that was taking place before them. Vitale could be attending a dog show for all the viewer would know.

to me it matters. I’m definitely not a Duke fan (went to Maryland), but at shouldn’t a national power act like a national power. Coach K is doing his players a disservice. They go to Duke, to go to the NBA. But his scheduling prevents them from maximizing their talents. They’re not battle-tested and a player truly develops in hostile environments.
