My expectations for him next year are that he has a much better average but the power numbers are down.
Anders – You showed your ignorance or bias based on your assesment of Escobar. Enough said about that.
Chipper earned the $ he gets now based on his body of work and what he has meant to the braves. He took big hometown discounts AND restructured his contracts in the past to help the team. He played outfield to the detriment of his body and career to help the team. He is just getting what has been long delayed and deserved. So he had a bad 2nd half. are we ready to right him off? I’m not. I believe he will have a very good bounceback year.
Everybody on the Mets had a lousy year, INJURY OR NO. They were ALL overpaid last year. The Mets payroll exceeded Braves by about $35M+.
Are they all done? Probably not. Will some of them come back this year? Probably. However, they still don’t scare me, and they are still outmanaged (in spite of what Don thinks) by Bobby AND Wren. And they still haven’t proved they won’t crash and burn in August and September when real stars step up.
Why was I more decisive about getting surgery than I was about swinging the bat with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th inning of Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS?
Daslied- No what I’m saying is that Chipper wasn’t hurt and still came up well short of his normal numbers. At his age that can’t be a good sign.
The Mets players were hurt so generally when guys miss 1/2 to more of the season they come up a tad short on their numbers.
You still with me?
Sure I am. You think 143 combined games from Beltran, Reyes and Delgado was worth $40MM, while 143 played games from Chipper wasn’t worth $13MM.
Anders Chipper was hurt he played through because we were in the race if we were not in the race i have no doubt the number of games he played in would have been lower.
Too bad those crappy Atlanta fans have attended more baseball games the last 20 years than Mets fans have ———— with half the population base advantage the Mets have

Anders-Well, I won’t go out of my way at Spring Training (or anywhere, honestly) looking for New Yorkers.
However, when the Grinch and I were there two years ago for ST, there was a group of exceptionally obnoxious Mets fans (autograph dealers) who blasted hell out of Bobby Cox for not coming over to sign for them immediately (he had already signed at least 30 two times that morning and would come back again for all requests). They were loud, disruptive, total a-holes and yes, The Grinch had to be restrained from tearing one of them into little pieces.
AustinBrave – Braves didn’t even have Hanson all last year. So thats a plus. Gonzo and Soriano could be marginally better than Saito/Wagner. I wouldn’t go “better” on either of them.
I agree with all of those comparisons, except for the Francoeur/Heyward one. Dont get me wrong, I expect great things from Heyward, but it might be a little premature to automatically think he will be great right out of the box.
With that being said, even if he struggles, he will still probably be better than Frenchy was last year.
So I guess I take it back. You are right, lol.
Again, there is a big disparity in the potential population fan base the teams can draw from, but the hapless Braves fans are basically neck in neck in attendance over the last 30 seasons with the so called passionate Mets fans
The attendance numbers are interesting, especially since Shea (which was the Mets home through all but one of those years)held around 7,000 more fans than the Ted and around 5,000 more fans than Fulton County Stadium. I have to say, though, I lived in New York for a couple years and went to Braves games there and the crowds always seemed bigger and certainly louder than your average Atlanta crowd. That’s not a knock on Braves fans. I actually think Braves fans are (on the whole) just more sane, less irrational, and less prone to break into a “Yankees suck” chant than your typical Mets fan.
I dont understand Lowe being opening day starter unless he has an amazing spring. Why not let Jair be the opening day starter? He was the best pitcher for the Braves the last two years. I think he has earned it.

DAP (et al): I posted the 1B numbers for conversation last night, then logged off. Ha! Oh well.
I would be happy if Glaus could manage his average over the last four healthy seasons (PWH: if I included the unhealthy seasons, his HR/season and k/season rates would drop considerably, hence I didn’t include them… plus I doubt it would have helped his averages)
I doubt Glaus will hit that average and I seriously doubt he will make the NL Average rates for a 1B. For that matter, after seeing what the qualified NL average was I’ll be surprise and ecstatic if Freeman can match that… but I don’t think he will… those were some large numbers.
I chose Qualified players for a reason. The Braves got Glaus to play full time. Plus, those teams with monster first basemen are generally speaking, the more successful teams.
As a side note, the K/season decreased as Adam Dunn moved from 1B to LF. Ha!
Actually I don’t know if that is entirely true. I know he made it as a qualifying 1B in at least one of those years, but the spreadsheet is at home and I’m not re-running the data now.
That said I was surprised to see the numbers so high. In general there were about 12 teams (of 16) that had qualifying 1B. And in general during that time frame the NL had some serious power at 1B… Teixeira, Berkman, Gonzalez, Fielder, Howard, Pujols, Delgado, (Dunn), Derek Lee, and so on.
More than likely Hudson is your opening day starter. We all know how Bobby is with his veteran starters, so Huddy will get the opening day start. I will bet on it.
Ahhh. Also forgot to mention, I looked at the qualifying candidates because of a quote I had put up a few weeks ago. It said something to the extent of “Braves signed Glaus because clearly what the Braves were lacking last year was a 33 year old first basemen coming off a major injury who will be only average at his position if he produces at the top of his game.” That quote fired off KC and a few others.
11:41am: Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports tweets that the team has reached an agreement with Nady, pending a physical. Given his elbow, the physical is far from a slam dunk.
DAP, Diamondview is a visualization tool created by Justin Bopp to determine how a player compares to the positional average in four categories: on base average, isolated power, speed score, and TotalZone (an advanced fielding metric).
Cubs sign Nady, so he is finally off the market. Depends on how much he is getting as to how much Damon really thinks he is worth, because if Nady gets 4 or 5 million coming off injury, then surely Damon will not come down from his demands of 10 million not coming off injury
Derek Lowe should be the opening day starter just to show him the Braves still have confidence in him and also to show him he will be a key part to their success.
Jay Hey….but, doncha have to give them a LITTLE bit of a break since they hafta split the fan base with the……UGH!!!!!…..Yankees?
Uh, no, not at all. The NYC metro area population is 18 million. Split that in half and you have 9 million. The Atlanta metro area only has 5.5 million living in it.
Or you can do it this way: Shea/Citi is located on the same island where you find Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. 5.8 million live in Brooklyn and Queens, and 2.8 million live on Long Island. That’s 8.6 million.
Lowe shouldn’t be the Opening Day starter. Either Hudson or Jurrjens should get that nod. Jair has without a doubt earned it on the mound. Hudson has earned it as a leader both on and off the field. Lowe should be insulted if he gets the Opening Day nod. The Braves wouldn’t be honoring Lowe with such a nod, and Lowe should know that. They’d be treating him like he’s some sensitive wimp.
Billy Beane deserves the Brett Favre “I have guts but sometimes have a brain fart moment” award for GM’s by signing more injury prone, never finish a season players that are ??????????
If I were Lowe, I’d be highly insulted if I was named the Opening Day starter. I’d know I didn’t deserve it, and that there were more deserving candidates, and that they gave it to me merely because they were concerned with how sensitive I was
The last few major FA dominoes are starting to fall…we should have a resolution on the Damon situation soon, I’d hope. I’m guessing either Braves Yankees, or Tigers.
If I were Lowe, I’d be highly insulted if I was named the Opening Day starter. I’d know I didn’t deserve it, and that there were more deserving candidates, and that they gave it to me merely because they were concerned with how sensitive I was
Its the manager’s call – who gives a crap what the pitcher thinks. Lowe (or whoever) will take the ball on Opening Day and do their job. I highly doubt any of the guys will complain about it, and I also doubt anyone will be privately offended by starting or not starting on Opening Day.
Its just one game – plenty of far more meaningful games to buoy a pitcher’s ego as the season progresses.
Sheets agreed to terms on a one-year deal for more than $8 million. He passed a physical today, and the deal is expected to be announced this afternoon. CBSSports.com
I was “brave enough” to look closer at the Chipper/Frenchy breakdown, as Anders suggested, and stumbled onto something amazing about Adam LaRoche.
I found that LaRoche hit better as Chipper hit worse! That’s right. As LaRoche picked up the slack left by Francoeur, Chipper clearly wrestled with the sadness of The Natural’s departure while enjoying the success of his hunting partner. Conflicted, he struggled.
And then, I peeled back the onion a bit further and found that Nate McLouth hit far worse once Francoeur was traded! It’s true. I think we’re all guilty of underestimating the support Frenchy provided Nate.
It’s overwhelming, to see the direct impact Francoeur had on so many Braves after he left. I only hope our guys can picked up the pieces and be brave enough to move forward.
well, it does matter since your frontline starters tend to get more starts than the back side of your rotation.
personally, id give hudson the nod on opening day. he is longer tenured than lowe both as a starter and on the braves. for me, its huddy, JJ, lowe, big red, KK
Anders, what’s funny about Damon? Throws like a little old lady, but he still hits for a high average and could probably hit 12-15 HR’s playing with Atl. I’d be a little ticked if I were a Mets fan because Sheets, when healthy, is flat out nasty and has always given Atl. fits. Too bad, you still got Santana and …. well, I forget after that.
Nady to Cubs, but he’s gotta pass physical first. After two TJ surgeries, not a given that he’ll pass, though I’d say it’s still fairly certain he will.
Say Jay Hey Kid- Any stat comparisons between the Mets and Braves on non-sold out playoff games in that data base you’re pulling from?
Oh, so your defense is Mets fans don’t jump on the bandwagon until the postseason, huh?
BTW, the Mets didn’t sell out playoff games in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1989.
Not only did they not sell out, they didn’t sell a single darn ticket. And it’s a damn shame if I follow what you’re saying. So many fans were waiting for the Mets to make the playoffs before they showed up.
When making the playoffs becomes more than a once every 7 year thing for the Mets, let us know how many Mets fan attend every playoff game. Until then, you sound like an ugly virgin scolding Don Draper for cheating on his wife.
DOB, quick question, what is all entailed in a physical for a player, I have this image of it being the one where they have to turn their head and cough. But I am sure it is more extensive, any ideas on what a player like Nady has to do to prove he is healthy?
…because if Nady gets 4 or 5 million coming off injury, then surely Damon will not come down from his demands of 10 million not coming off injury — O.J.
Damon is not getting $10 mill, O.J. — not unless that’s for two seasons.
I’d still much rather have Nady than Cabrera, without question.
Seems obvious that if the Cubs wouldn’t go after Dye because of his price than he’s out of the price range for the Braves, if they are even interested. Damon could easily be out of range too.
O.J., keep in mind that Nady is 31, Damon is 36. Nady is not a pitcher coming back from T.J. surgery, he’s a hitter. It’s still obviously got to be of some concern, but not nearly what it would be if he were a pitcher. And while Damon isn’t coming back from surgery like Nady is, Damon does have some health issues from age and wear-and-tear. (That said, I’ll reiterate that I think he can really help this Braves team as leadoff hitter and left fielder most days.)
A’s sign Sheets, so perhaps that limits their payroll resources for Damon. I’ve been reading that if the A’s weren’t able to sign Sheets, they’d use that money to go after Damon. So…it would seem that our chances to sign Damon have improved, assuming the Yankees don’t sign him.
Sheets signs with A’s. Another pitcher Mets don’t get. They will never scare me as long as they don’t fix pitching. I still say Bobby and Wren have outmanaged Mets BY A MILE.
TnBrian: Since the Braves made the moves that brought Cabrera and Hinske to the team, has anyone connected to the Braves or anyone who covers the team given you any reason to believe the Braves have interest in signing Dye? Hey, maybe if he falls in their laps for next-to-nothing, but I just haven’t gotten impression Braves were interested. Scouts said his bat speed really deteriorated in second half last season.
TnBrian- Who knows on Sheets? I hoped the Mets would take a flyer on him but he was set on the A’s or Rangers unless the Mets gauranteed a lot more money. Can’t do that. So be it.
Hey, the Mets didn’t have the options they needed available to them this off season. I wouldn’t pay Lackey what he’s getting and they didn’t have trade pieces for Haliday.
The Mets did go out and get Bay so it wasn’t like they’re not willing but the right guy just wasn’t there. Not much you can do about that. They’re gonna have to hope they can bring Perez and Maine back to what they were in 2008 and Pelfrey develops. Lot’s of if’s.

Just catching up on reading the blog and noticed a number of posters saying Prado is “just an average” player. Question:
When a player hits .300 during his minor league career and then .307 (so far) in his major league career how is he “just average?”
Last year in the NL only ten players hit .307 or higher.
1. Ramirez (FLA) .342
2. Sandoval (SFG) .330
3. Pujols (STL) .327
4. Helton (COL) .325
5. Votto (CIN) .322
6. Coghlan (FLA) .321
7. Braun (MIL) .320
8. Tejada (HOU) .313
9. Lopez (TOT) .310
10. Morgan (TOT) .307
Prado’s stats for 2009 were AB .307 in 128 games and 450 AB’s.
If that is “just average” I’ll take it any day. Agree or disagree?

Cubs sign Nady, so he is finally off the market. Depends on how much he is getting as to how much Damon really thinks he is worth, because if Nady gets 4 or 5 million coming off injury, then surely Damon will not come down from his demands of 10 million not coming off injury
