When are going to stop calling this a Vaz for Melky swap? It was not Vizcaino was the prize.
Answer me this? In 1987 the Braves traded a player who went on to go 9-0 and finish 4th in the Cy Young award voting for a AA player who had just come off a 4-10 5.68 ERA season. Are you mad we made that trade? Because we got no Major league talent back in that trade. Well guees what John Smoltz will be headed to the Hall of Fame in a few years.
Another thing Vazquez has NEVER won 20 games (yes he could have last season if he had some run support) but what makes you think he is going to repeat a career year? He might be better than his average season but to expect 20 wins out of a guy who has never done it is a reach. And we replaced him with a pretty dang good pitcher in Hudson. I mean, I know I get really irritated with certain players for no other reason than the fact that they’re shoved down our throats all the time.
Was Ken Griffey Jr. the only superstar of the 90’s that played clean ? I think so. I mean Arod’s denial then admittance was hysterical. But since he plays for the mighty Yankees, we can simply overlook it. Like Palmeiro under oath “For the last time, I have never used steroids” then like two weeks later testing positive for it.
robdawg08 – It’s quite unfortunate, but I feel we’ve come into an era in which we now have to prove a player is clean rather than prove he was ‘roiding it up. Sad day.
K-Rod has a 95 % closer rating. He blows like 2 saves out of 50.
So you are so much a Braves fan that you can’t admit the Mets are loaded and the Braves are basically eroded ? If you care to back up your mouth with your wallet we can go online and make a wager. I’ll take the Mets to win the division and you take the Braves. if the Phillies or Marlins win we both lose. If the Nats win, I’ll shave your head.
Balco has Bonds dead to rights proven,McGwire just admitted it,Clemens denied it but his wife, doctor, and Pettitte said he did them, and Arod admitited he used roids thru high school (and we know he stopped, not).
What more PROOF you want ?
My god, you guys don’t even like a .300 hitter who plays multiple positions and makes the MLB eqiv. of peanuts? What does it take to win you over? Atlanta fans…(sigh). And yes, I’m from Georgia, but not Atlanta. And yes, there is a major difference.
And I’ll bet any Mets fan here the Braves finish ahead of them in the NL East this season. I bet MetsFaninATL 20 bucks last year (in person) and he conveniently disappeared when the season ended. Must be a New York thing.
Glaus has been an injury prone Mendoza hitter the last 3 years.
Why not have Hudson AND Vasquez ?
Mets have no pitching ? Santana will likely win the Cy Young and K-Rod is the best closer that ain’t named M.Rivera.
Why don’t you post your opinion lil’ boy instead of hating on mine?
Ok dude to the Mendoza comment: Here is Glaus’s last three seasons combined including his injury last season: .264/.366/.472/.838 hmmmmm yeah thats real close to the Mendoza line.
The numbers we got from LaRoche and Kotchman last season were almost identical .300/.373/.470/.843 except for average (and this is only if LaRoche can tear it again like he did last season not likely) So to say he is Mendoza like is laughable.
Obviously you did not follw the trade progession of Derek Lowe very closely did you? NOBODY WANTED HIM and they were expecting us to eat over half his salary to do it.
The Mets staff as a whole absolutely sucks yeah they may have 2 good pitchers on their staff doesnt make their staff not suck. Hell Soriano had a better season than K-Rod did last season
To the lil boy comment amazing how big someones balls grow when talking through a computer
robdawg08, as Jimmy Rollins would say, the Phillies are the team to beat. Won the division the last three years. Don’t see the mets overtaking them anymore than I see the braves doing it. Think we will once again be competitive and compete for the wild card. Best case scenerio, every move Frank Wren made pays off and a lot of things we need to have break right happens and we win the division. Right now though, honestly the mets to me do not represent any more of a threat than us to overtake them.
I wasn’t very impressed with the Braves this offseason, but that has nothing to do with your hyperbole. K-Rod has had some very good seasons and a couple of great ones, but you are just inventing stats to prove your point.
RSD, I just checked mine. They seem to be about the same, for some reason. A little smaller than usual, maybe, but I chalk that up to being in a cold room.
…or maybe Prado’s height will leave him prone to injury. lol.
jeffery d- funny, I thought the same thing about Schafer when he was suspended. Then I read the story more closely, and realized he wouldn’t rat out his friends who were using. Yeah, looking at Schafer you’d have to say the dude was getting placebo ‘roids/PEDs.
I’ll be in touch, huckleberry.
I’m a Braves fan but I look at the talent to make my predictions not blind loyalty. I reiterate that the Mets will be nothing like last year since they will have a healthy Jose Reyes (like Rollins but better OBP),Beltran (like R. Howard but higher BA), and J. Santana (like C.Hamels). Add Jason Bay’s bat (like C. Utley) and they match up with the Phillies really well. I hate the Mets but it’s easy to see they have a better team than the Braves.
RSD, you still never add anything to the blog. You only tear apart other’s blogs and criticize. You must be so proud ? Why don’t you give us your take on the Braves for 2010 ?
I mean RSD, dude scroll up and read all your posts. Someone posts then you hilight their exact post and then promptly criticize over and over. At least people speak their minds. I’m not a stat-boy nerd so my stats may be off. But K-Rod is better than B.Wagner and that’s the gyst of the argument. And Glaus is a sub .270 hitter and highly injury prone.
Mets add Jason Bay and Braves add Glaus. Wow !
robdawg08, I think everybody realizes the Mets will be better than they were last year. But really I don’t see why they would match up with the phillies any better now than they did in 2008 and 2007 when they lost out to them in the division. Reyes, Beltran, Wright have been there for a while and Jason Bay’s numbers are very close to what Delgado had been giving them. Santana is very good but this team isn’t all that different than the team that lost out to them in 2007 and 2008. I think thats where most of the skepticism comes from when it comes to the mets.
Glaus has been an injury prone Mendoza hitter the last 3 years — robdawg08
Welcome back, robdawg08. Please excuse me, but I’m just making sure: You are aware the Braves got Troy Glaus, right? You’re not confusing him with someone else?
And if so, then a second question, re: the Mendoza Line. You’re aware it’s .200? I only ask because before Glaus missed most of last season while injured, the lowest he’d batted in the previous nine seasons was .248. In 2007 he hit .262 with 20 homers and an .839 OPS, and in 2008 he hit .270 with 27 homers and an .856 OPS.
Not sure how the Mendoza Line is relevant in discussing him, unless you think last year’s .172 average in 32 at-bats was the real Glaus.
But I will agree with you that he’s injury-prone. No doubt about that.
hello DOB. I hope Glaus plays well. It is just mind-boggling that every year the Braves get the second and third tier FA’s. I miss the days of adding the Maddux’s,Galarrga’s, and McGriffs ! Am I alone ?
It is like the Mets buy Porsche’s every year and the Braves buy Yugo’s.
Yeah and the porsche has driven them to missing the playoffs three out of the last 4 seasons while we have missed it 4 out of the last 4. That does sound kind of bad. Wait, let’s go with they have missed the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years and so have we.
i’d be happy if we got 25-30 homers and 75-80 RBIs from Glaus. While I’d love to see higher numbers, I’m more interested in seeing him healthy and providing a little protection for Chipper. Chipper – Glaus – BMac – Esco… that ain’t a bad 3,4,5,6 folks. We could do worse.
Good points, but at least the Mets show a committment to win. They arm themselves with good players. Injuries can’t be foreseen. I miss the old days of building your team thru the minor leagues (and the Braves do as well as any team at this) so if it becomes a free agent league to guarantee success then you must adhere or fall by the wayside. I mean, who here didn’t shake their heads in disbelief when they heard the Mets signed Jason Bay (the top free agent hitter available) ?
You forget that Gary Matthews Jr will be patrolling CF for April and perhaps much of May for the Mets. Beltran’s a fine player, but he’s going to miss several weeks at a minimum. And he’d better be healthy when he returns, because Bay and Francoeur can get to about as many balls as I can.
Robdawg good grief at 8:41. You have been throwing out dumb post after dumb post. Which is fine, nothing wrong with not being intelligent about baseball, but dont complain when somebody points out the flaws in all of your posts. If you dont like it stop posting about things you obviously dont know anything about. By the way you dont have to be a stat-boy nerd to figure out what the players have been doing during their career. Just go to baseballreference.com and type in the players names. This may help you more than anything. I know it has helped me.
I mean, who here didn’t shake their heads in disbelief when they heard the Mets signed Jason Bay (the top free agent hitter available) ?
Well I did, only because I knew that pitching was their number 1 priortiy not offense. Their offense was poor last year because of injury, assuming they are healthy the question marks were never with thier offense. Like I said Bay basically replaces the production they got from Delgado but who will fill in those spots in the rotation behind Johan?
Jason Bay’s knees will not last through that contract, that’s why the BO sox only offered two yrs guaranteed, the Met’s trainers have blinders on, see Jose Reyes coming back too early and the whole Beltran thing also.
Kelly you total spoon, sure Prado all 5ft 11 and 170 lbs has been roiding up.. sure… at 26 years of age and several years experience we shouldnt expect him to improve like I don’t know Chase Utley did from ages 23-26 where his OPS went from the 700 range to the low 900 range…
were you here over a year ago when Chipper himself was reported as saying Marteen was the 2nd best hitter on the team…. which kind of means the great HOSS either thinks Marteen is better than McCann or himself………… either way it is a big rap….
now KJ… great guy, nice human being but he sucked so often and boomed so rarely who knows what you will ever get from him…. Prado at mlb level has been a consistent contact hitter and getting better power wise as he hits that magical 26-29 year old range
the Mets are in disarray, they are gonna go after some of Beltran’s money because he had surgery w/out telling anyone, or ASKING anyone first- Bay is walking into a meat grinder, and they have no pitching, Johan, Perez , Pelfrey, Maine, and …………..can’t even think of the other guy. I think Frenchy will have a decent year but they have alot of drama yet to unfold in that clubhouse
Outstanding, Robdawg08 is back from his long ride on the short bus. The Mets will lucky to beat the Nats to stay out of the NL East cellar in 2010. Spending money recklessly does not necessarily translate into winning, especially if your GM is a dim bulb like Minaya.
Chopdawg, are you insinuating Mr. Potato Head smokes crack? Cause if you are, I believe you. The Hawks are winning despite Woodson, IMO. He HATES offense, and he HATES rookies. My favorite moment of the season so far: Jeff Teague (who should be our starting point guard in a year or two but won’t as long as Woody’s here) was standing still during a free throw attempt by the opposition. Woodson looks at him from behind and yells “HEY ROOK!” Nothing. “HEY ROOK!” Nothing again. Then: “Jeff!” Then Teague magically hears him and turns around. Love it. He’s gonna be good.
All the wrong plays I’ve made have come back on my head
And I’m kind of bald in the front,
I can’t get the team to the goal line no more
So I think I’ll just stand back and punt.
Football and poker’s a whole lot like life
And I’m like a player that’s through,
Think I’ll cash in my winnings and walk off the green
Come sit in the bleachers with you.
The grandstand of life ain’t no place for a wife
To be sittin’ and sweatin’ alone,
Can’t be no pinch hitter, but I’m not a quitter
These are just thoughts of my own.
I’m so glad you came to see my last game
You’re the one fan who cares how I do,
Think I’ll turn in my jersey and walk off the field
Come sit in the bleachers with you.
There’s a time when a winner must give up his chair
Throw in the hand when it’s bad,
Football and poker’s both played on the green
But there’s three shades of green and I’m glad.
The roar of the crowd don’t thrill me enough
My days in the big time are through,
Think I’ll cash in my winnings and walk off the green
Come sit in the bleachers with you.
The grandstand of life ain’t no place for a wife
To be sittin’ and sweatin’ alone,
Can’t be no pinch hitter, but I’m not a quitter
These are just thoughts of my own.
I’m so glad you came to see my last game
You’re the one fan who cares how I do,

Hope Favre isn’t feeing too much like the above this evening. I’m beat up from just watching!!
robdawg08– No, you’re no alone. Every once in a while I wonder how the marlins do it with their lack of millions and excellent scouting, then look at the Braves’ payroll and say “MMMMMM”
As for Glaus, here’s hoping his situation will mirror that of another Braves free agent acquisition, Terry Pendleton. Remember, he came to Atlanta off a .230 season with St. Louis, looking like he was about to become “an old 30″, when he turned it around.
I know the situations with Glaus and Pendleton aren’t exactly the same (as Glaus was injured most of last year). Howver, I think summer of 91’s predicted stats would make for a decent turnaround.
redstick19–I second your hopes for Glaus
Man, I’m ready for spring training, when a DOB blog comes with sun glasses, flip-slops, flowered shirts and fish tacos!
” I miss the days of adding the Maddux’s,Galarrga’s, and McGriffs ! Am I alone ?”robdawg08
Alone? I don’t know. Mis-informed, or poor memory? Yup.
You just mentioned 2 of ONLY 3 “big name” free agents to ever be signed by the Braves during the run. Brian Jordan being the other. McGriff was traded for.
Like Sheffield. Like JD Drew. Like Hudson. Like Vazquez. Like Mike Hampton (sorry – had to mention him). Like Russ Ortiz.
Everybody else was considered 2nd tier. The Braves didn’t make their mark by EVER bringing in the big free agnents. They made their mark by having the best, deepest farm system in baseball and KEEPING those guys around for as long as possible. Somthing that Wren seems like he too wants to do.
Walt Weiss might very well be a toss up between whether he was a big time free agent or 2nd tier. I think he was better defensively than Blauser and worse offensively. IE: JS let somebody with about the same value walk away to sign Weiss.
Vinny Castilla in his late 30’s? Hardly a big time free agent.
So. Let verify what you miss, just so I’m clear. You miss a move made in 1993, one in 1998 and another in 1999? That’s what you miss?
Yup. Those sure the good old days, huh?
Keep in mind that just 3 years ago, the Braves took on Tex’s salary and he didn’t want to stay after his time was up. Keep in mind that the Braves made the 2nd highest offer to Arod when Texas signed him.
I also see no mention of the fact that the Braves signed Derek Lowe to a 4 year 60 million dollar contract last winter? Why not? Because he’s 36 years old and probably not a long-term answer? The Big Cat was 37 years old when he signed with the Braves. Had one good year, got cancer and was never the same again.
Sorry to pick on you. But when people make such silly statement with zero foundation to support the “claim”, I can’t help but tear it down.
Now, had you said you miss the days when Ted’s money allowed us to compete with any team for free agents, or to retain them when their contracts were up after trading for them? That, I could roll with.
But to site that you miss the days of big free agents coming to Atlanta is just silly, at best.
N8 that was a good post at 10:53. Im from the St. Louis area and always get mad when my friends say the Braves were just like the Yankees. Which is completely false. Yeah they had a big payroll but look who they spent it on, their players that they brought up. Can you blame a team who doesnt want to see its great young pitchers that they developed and leave for somebody else. One reason why I believe they will keep both Jair and Hanson when it comes time to pony up the dough. They are not some team who is going to let there pitchers just walk in their prime.
DOB, you mentioned “Timecrimes” earlier today, but I’m convinced you must be mistaken. I’m almost sure that it was “Hot Tub Time Machine” that you loved. Yes, that MUST be it.
On another note. I’m going to try to make it to Crazy Heart this week, but I was considering “Das Weisse Band” (The White Ribbon) instead. Have you seen it? You don’t often talk about foreign films, but you seem to like enough indie/arthouse movies to probably catch a few. This one looks amazing, and our tastes seem to overlap more often than not, so I was wondering if you saw it what were your thoughts.
I should have written that you don’t often comment on foreign films…unless maybe… Penelope Cruz…
I was also wondering if you had seen Precious? (err…sorry– Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire). It was one of the most moving, and devastating films I’ve seen in years. Anyone who thinks they have it rough should see that movie and close their mouth.
Hmmm….very interesting now. Double break advantage now for Roddick in the 4th set. Serving now with a 3-0 game lead. Barring something unforseen, match should go 5 sets. Not something anyone would have believed at the completion of the 2nd set.
Most important stat in this match keeping Roddick alive so far is the serve % of Cilic…particularly his first serve….LESS than 50% for Cilic. That is a recipe for disaster.
Roddick now serving to win the 4th set at love (wow)…
Is there any doubt that Syracuse is the best team in the country? I don’t think so! No other team can match their resume. Did I mention the 31 point turn around against a very good Georgetown team.
Road wins against N. Carolina, Florida, California, W virginia, Notre Dame ..wins over 7th ranked Georgetown, Cornell, Memphis. This all equals a #1 RPI ranking, #4 SOS ranking! pretty impressive.
Wow O’Brien, you spend an excessive amount of time on Schafer. Your writing is so negative that you’ve lost your objectivity. It’s hard to read your column when it comes to him. It’s a smear campaign. What the heck did he do to piss you off?
I love all the Met talk that went on here last night while WASN’T around. Personally I think Robdawg’s thinking the Mets are basically a lock to win the east is way over board considering the Phils and all. However, I do believe many on here are taking the Mets too lightly. Only time will tell.
I love this little diddy from last night:
And I’ll bet any Mets fan here the Braves finish ahead of them in the NL East this season. I bet MetsFaninATL 20 bucks last year (in person) and he conveniently disappeared when the season ended. Must be a New York thing.
(Grinch)
New York is getting blamed for some guy in Atlanta welching on a bet. Gotta love the objectivity! You and Lew should have a blast in Florida cursing out all the New Yorkers you run into down there.
10paul Since 2005, and not including 2009, Troy Glaus, in his four healthy seasons, averaged:
.261/.364/.500/.864 with 30HR… and 121 strike outs.
i will be very happy if we get that out of glaus. that would be great. and, though those numbers are a bit below average for first baseman in the years you cited, i dont think thats a huge deal. compare catchers between 05-09 and i bet mccann blows those numbers away.

So you are so much a Braves fan that you can’t admit the Mets are loaded and the Braves are basically eroded ? If you care to back up your mouth with your wallet we can go online and make a wager.
Hell Soriano had a better season than K-Rod did last season

robdawg08, as Jimmy Rollins would say, the Phillies are the team to beat.

I hate the Mets but it’s easy to see they have a better team than the Braves.

robdawg08, I think everybody realizes the Mets will be better than they were last year.

Well I did, only because I knew that pitching was their number 1 priortiy not offense.

Come sit in the bleachers with you.

robdawg08– No, you’re no alone.

No good deed goes unpunished: Dentz fades away, only to make room for the return of robdawg. Say amen.

By the way, you’ve resorted to personal digs on him and his home town polks. Are you still selling news?

Annoyed, you interpreted the blog differently than I did. What exactly annoyed you?
