A cynic could also notice that Maddux never had an ERA+ less than 125 from 1992 through 2002. Then when drug testing came around in 2003, he never again had an ERA+ above 110. A cynic could also notice that Glavine had an ERA+ less than 125 only twice from 1991 through 2002. Then when drug testing came around in 2003, he never again had an ERA+ above 120. But then if you say Glavine and Maddux should have fallen off in their late 30s, a cynic could counter by wondering how Smoltz was as good in his late 30s as he was in his late 20s. That’s the shame of the roid era.

Just got back from seeing Crazy Heart. Great movie, with absolutely terrific performance by Jeff Bridges as the fading, alcoholic country singer, Bad Blake. Best acting performance I’ve seen this year, without question.

The music is outstanding for anyone who likes country or alt-country. There’s tunes by Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, the Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens, etc. Ryan Bingham does the title song and also plays in the first backup band in some tragic show Bad plays at a bowling alley out in some desert town. Great scene that sets the tone.

Bridges can actually sing quite well, does his own songs and they’re all good. His character reminds me a lot of Waylon, right down to the long hair, sunglasses and beer belly. Robert Duvall’s character even calls him “Hoss” one time.

Daybed: I’m telling you, Brown was so ridiculously dominant that season. Batter after batter described hitting his heavy sinker as being like making contact with a bowling ball…

Supes: Embarrasing that Alomar didn’t go in on first ballot. One of those years where I’m honestly glad to say my paper doesn’t allow me to vote, and also glad my year as BBWAA president is up, because I got a bunch of calls from radio stations wanted to interview me and ask about Alomar not getting in and other voting matters. I’d cut them off at the pass by explaining, “Sorry man, but I’m not the president anymore. Call John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press. That’s your man.”

well there is no question but that westerns and sci-fi are related. In the early days 30s-60s many writers wrote both and sci-fi was often a western plot that took place in space. That is kinda like Avatar from all I have read and heard. I wanna see it I love both genres. along with screwball comedies and film noir.

I’ve stated many times that had I had a vote in 96 for NL Cy Young, it would have went to Kevin Brown over Smoltz. Smoltz had a great year, and his great TEAM won most of his starts, which is impressive. I think with the post-season and the all-star game, he won 30 games that year. Definitely worthy of high praise.

But Kevin Brown was the more dominant pitcher that year, on not such a good team.

According to ESPN.com following is what the deal turned out to be.

Among free agents, first baseman Adam LaRoche and Arizona finalized a one-year contract that guarantees him $6 million. LaRoche gets $4.5 million this year, and the deal includes a $7.5 million mutual option for 2011 with a $1.5 million buyout. LaRoche receives the buyout if either side declines, and if he gets traded the option price would increase to $9.5 million.

Tom O’Hawke the only thing I remember was coming up with a projection formula to estimate the number of wins for any team by taking Bill James projections and their career UZR/150 and putting it into MLB.COM’s xW-L formula it would also work for trades and right now it projects us to be 94 – 68 which I would have to say is much better than 19.1%

I think they are all too high RSD, but I understand the premise. I just think it will be interesting to see. That’s the kinda stuff that piques my interest even though I am skeptical of most stats beyond OPS+ or ERA+
.I don’t know how you are figuring it, but it seems to me that many of those equations add subjective thought back in, for instance the concept of what makes a replacement player, . Bill James WinShares had a cheat factor built in IIRC. If you didn’t like the way the equation turned out on a player you could change a variable. At least I think I remember that from when it first came out, but any system that put Biggio in the top 50players of all time which I’m pretty sure it did, wouldn’t impress me at all.

nolie its very basic accounting for runs+ basically the number of runs produced or saved in comparison to runs given up

((RS^1.82)/((RS^1.82)+((RA+56+(UZR/150*-1))^1.82)))*162

if that makes any sense to you lol
