Weird, haven’t heard so much as a peep anywhere about Nady for a long while and as soon as I say something about it all the sudden the Cubs have interest in him. I bet he’ll be real cheap, like $2-3M cheap and Wren should be all over him. Though I think Melky won’t be as easy to trade as some think because he’s not necessarily cheap, maybe Atl. could keep he and Diaz and when Heyward is ready in the summer put Melky on the block. Teams get more desperate by then, always do.
You asking me or just asking what people think of him in general? I think the majority of fans would like to have him hitting leadoff for us at the right price, but anything that involves Boras and the Yankees things start to get real dramatic. Very unpredictable.
What you can say about Bonds is that he kept it clean for the longest of any of the big sluggers of the era. He was still pretty skinny at the end of the 90s, when he probably looked around and said “F-this, everyone hates me and they love McGwire and Sosa? Those cheating douches? China Grove
I have a friend who knows Bonds fairly well and he says that Barry has an almost pathological need for respect. Bonds – the best player I have seen outside of Maddog.. but his hr averages went from 35 per year pre ‘roids to 51 per year in the 6 years post 98…. maybe the hof should take 33% of hr’s off those who were caught cheating for the period they were suspected of using… means McGwire would have in the mid 400s for hr
Bonds was still one of the best players without steroids. He hit for .avg, stole bases, and hit for power. What if the Braves would have had Bonds during the 90s?

tiger – I did not realize it was a holiday… none of my stops went off and I stopped out near 11am with a massive loss on the missus’ account… luckily I made plenty early this month on my own larger account to appease her……….. pretty stupid of me getting drunk and having positions on before a holiday !
DOB-
Is there a feeling amongst baseball writers that the longer Johnny Damon goes without signing with the Yankees, then more likely it becomes he signs with Braves? I have no major likes or dislikes when it comes to him in a Braves uniform… just asking outta curiosity, really. I mean, who else is interested in him that would not have stepped up and made an offer by now, right?
At the end of the day you want the logo to represent where this guy made his greatest impact,” Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson said at a recent news conference (DOB’S Blog)
Has a pitcher EVER had a greater impact on a team than Tom Glavine did that last September as a Met and more specifically that last unfinished 1st inning that fateful October Sunday afternoon? Sounds like he wears a Met lid into the old hall based on this. {:

Do you think McCann will be a Brave for life? (joerochester)
Nope. The DH position will be calling in about 5 years. Too good a hitter to sit behind that plate forever. Too bad a non-catching body to play anywhere else. IMO anyway.
as a UK fan figured you might know who he was…my better 1/2’s cousin and he hung out with us over the weekend (except for the time he was at the auburn game)
are you in Kentucky somewhere or local to Atlanta…the cooking comments have me curious LOL
I’d like to see McCann stay, but I can imagine he’ll be a DH late in his career. Especially with his splits against lrighties, he could be a good platoon when he’s in his mid-late thirties, everyday against righties and occasionally against a southpaw.
The Good Lord willing, he’ll win a ring in Atlanta. But if this doesn’t happen, I can see him making the best decision for himself and going to an AL contender for a good number of years. Once a guy stops playing D, it’s amazing how long he can stick it out.
I grew up near Louisville (Ft. Knox/Radcliff/E-town area). I am currently in Cleveland, Ohio…but I am not sure for how much longer. A return to Ky this summer/fall seems like a very good possibility.
anders Has a pitcher EVER had a greater impact on a team than Tom Glavine did that last September as a Met and more specifically that last unfinished 1st inning that fateful October Sunday afternoon?
how about october 28th 1995? unless you are a self centered mets fan, pitching lights out in the clinching game of a world series has much more impact.
yes from Ashley Judd’s only source of news on UK LOL
my better 1/2’s family is from louisville so we go up there pretty regularly, will actually be up there this weekend for my youngest son’s 2nd bday
I spent 3 years in cleveland (actually lived in westlake) back in the late ’90’s when the jake was selling out every game. Not a bad place I actually enjoyed it but the winters could be very brutal.
how about october 28th 1995? unless you are a self centered mets fan, pitching lights out in the clinching game of a world series has much more impact.(DAP)
Some radar you got their guy. You weren’t guarding the entrance to Pearl Harbor some 65 years ago – were ya?
one of my best friends lives in fairlawn which should be close to you right? I can remember the day I decided to leave, I looked at the 10 day forecast and the largest number was 8. That’s tough on a boy from south louisiana ya know
Of course, McCann could just make a move to 1st base when he and they feel it’s time for a position change. Let me guess, he’s too fat and slow to play a position that features Delgado,Berkman and other 1st baseman that have played that position and are below average there. Gallaraga was a big, slow guy, but he could scoop them out with the best of em and I could see McCann being a AG over there someday.
McCann will NOT leave the ATL… he is happy on the loot he gets..(dogsbrekky)
Happier than Glavine and Maddux were back when they were winning all those games and titles – yet left for the loot anyway? He’ll be worth more as a DH some day than a catcher imo.At least for an extended deal.
McGwire has gotten the rawest of the raw deals from the panel of roiders including Bonds, Arod, and Clemens. Perhaps this is because more people liked the guy than the others. I don’t know.
I can understand a HOF voter refusing to vote for a ‘roider on principle. But attempting to describe him as one dimensional player while casting a vote for a DH seems ridiculous, as I’ve read some voters logic on other sites.
Of all “those cheating douches” Sosa is by far the biggest douche of the entire era. Say what you will about McGwire’s course of action at the Congressional hearing, Sosa pretended he couldn’t understand English. That was Sosa’s defense.
On top of all of that, Sosa corked his bat.
That guy went from hitting .257/.308/.469/.777 with a 106 OPS+ over 9 seasons (averaging 23 HR and 77 RBI a season)
to hitting .302/.391/.635/1.027 with a 162 OPS+ over 6 seasons (averaging 55 HR and 135 RBI a season). He practically doubled his home run pace, going from hitting a HR once every 19+ at bats to hitting one once very 10+ at bats… all while suckin down the juice, corking his bat… and forgetting how to speak a language.
The only reason I have stayed this long is my g/f. I hate this place. Your recollection of the 10-day forecast is a regular one during the winters here. Ugh. Ky isn’t as warm as Louisiana, but snow is still pretty rare there too.
brekky Lew’s comment is below to put it in context he said he goes soon after pitchers and catchers report. Cost $12 bucks to get in and very little crowds and he also indicated the closer to start of games the more focused and less interactive the players tend to get. Still haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet…
tiger-The practices usually start around 9:00, though you can get autographs at the players’ entrance before hand. Practices last until around 12:30-1:00 with players straggling out for an hour or more afterwards.
You can go to the back fields and watch the pitchers (and later the minor leaguers), go down to the bating cages (great place for autographs), or stay up at the main field and watch BP and fielding/running drills. You also get to see the ML pitchers throw BP. Also a good place for autographs. Bobby Cox signs up there as do coaches and most of the players who will sign while waiting for their BP turn or right after (some won’t sign at all).
Bonds was still one of the best players without steroids. He hit for .avg, stole bases, and hit for power. What if the Braves would have had Bonds during the 90s?joerochester
Back when the blog was discussing who was more valuable, a pitcher or a position player, I asked what would have happened if the Braves had traded Steve Avery for the Pirates Barry Bonds in 1992. Avery was hurt soon thereafter and Bonds blossomed into the most potent offensive player. The only thing certain would be the Braves would have won more than one World Series.
But would Bonds have gone the steroid rout being the leader of the Braves in the 90’s? Supposedly, and that is really not certain, the Braves had clean players, but a few, led by a catcher who left at the end of the season looking like Joe Torre and came back looking like Jose Canseco, were in question.
Anders – a bit hard to guard the entrance to a harbor as in Pearl Harbor when the Japs were coming in by air in size…
and I saw the Glavine Mets game and remember it in detail… he was putrid that day but had a heap of blooped singles against, errors and bad luck as well… still your mutts effed up many more games then just that ONE
TnBrian – So why don’t they just move McCann to first now? Or do you expect his feet will improve as he ages and plays 145 games a year behind the plate? If the Braves thought he could play first they would have moved his bat there already. It’s not like he’s Johnny Bench behind the dish.
What’s going on in Cleveland can happen almost anywhere, all across the northeast and midwest it’ll happen first, it’s been bad in manufacturing towns and cities in Canada too. I grew up in a mill town that was very prosperous and clean only 10 or 15 years back. During that time it was voted “best small town in the country” a couple of times. Well, most of the mill jobs are gone – the unions been decimated, and the pay and benefits have been decimated with it. No money in the local economy anymore and now a lot of the service industry is going under too. Now there’s crack cocaine, poverty, crime. Walking through the halls of my old high school is already depressing – empty classrooms, brawls, drugs. And this is in Canada!
This is why we like Springsteen. Take a listen to “My Hometown”, it echoes my sentiments exactly.

Is there a feeling amongst baseball writers that the longer Johnny Damon goes without signing with the Yankees, then more likely it becomes he signs with Braves? I have no major likes or dislikes when it comes to him in a Braves uniform… just asking outta curiosity, really.

Nope. The DH position will be calling in about 5 years. Too good a hitter to sit behind that plate forever. Too bad a non-catching body to play anywhere else. IMO anyway.

He practically doubled his home run pace, going from hitting a HR once every 19+ at bats to hitting one once very 10+ at bats… all while suckin down the juice, corking his bat… and forgetting how to speak a language.

brekky Lew’s comment is below to put it in context he said he goes soon after pitchers and catchers report.
