Johnny Damon was asked by the Boston Globe where he’d like to play. “Atlanta would be great,’’ he said.
if he were to approach us with what he was willing to work for and it wasn’t unrealistic i don’t see how Frank doesn’t move Melky Cabrera and sign Johnny Damon. He obviously wants to play here, he’d help the team WAY WAY MORE than Melky Cabrera.
Jeffrey D: Florida and UK only play in Knoxville once a year, unless they returned for an NCAA tourney game. UK was not the usual UK for many years in that stretch. And when the Gators came to Knoxville for one game in each of their title years, Gators were probably ranked in top five or so, just not No. 1.
That said, it still is a surprising stat.
As for Mississippi State, I know they won SEC titles, and I think they had at least one No. 1 regional seed in the NCAA tourney one time in the ’90s. But have they ever actually been ranked No. 1 in the national polls?
I know what Frank Wren said about Braves being close to their projected payroll figure, and it’s not that I don’t believe him. But … once again, I’ll just say regarding possibility of Braves signing Damon, however diminished those chances now seem: Never say never.
Getting my hopes up, DOB. Damon signing would really be nice. .362 OBP the last 8 years in the AL East. Guy would be a real solid addition, imo.
Wren has to know that this offense still must be upgraded. I wasnt a fan of signing Damon at 1st, but Id much rather have him at $5-6 mil if possible than another 4th OF’r making $3.5. Frank has always said that Liberty is flexible, so get the fans a little excited and get some more people in the seats.
But have they ever actually been ranked No. 1 in the national polls?
Oh I don’t know…probably not. I was just saying it was pretty surprising. UT played AT Florida when they were #1 a few years ago, but UF was #4 that year when they came to town.
Anyway, it should be a great game. I was in Memphis when Tennessee came and it was a crazy atmosphere. Guess it’s always like that when two big basketball schools are playing (ha…I wouldn’t know…I went to UGA post-Harrick)
DOB got to agree about the Cy Young awards and the wins, makes a case for him being more dominant and successful when he was with the Braves. (Of course he was probably the most dominant pitcher of the whole era period)
Don’t know if you folks saw Jake Cook’s comment about the Skip Caray T-shirts, but he’s got a website up now built around selling the shirt. If only it could help Skip win the Frick award that’ll be announced in a couple weeks….
Anyway, here’s where you can get the shirts (and they are pretty cool; I bought one from him when he had the first batch made couple years ago):
Kind of pathetic that some of you cant give someone props for picking the EXACT score of a game BEFORE it happens.
In case some of you who arent SO BITTER that you cant objectively give someone props, at 12:01am Saturday morning, I predicted that the Cowboys would beat the Eagles 34-14, (the post is in the middle of page 5 of this blog).
Even though of you who hate me with a passion have to admit that it was a DEAD ON post by me 17 hours before the game even started.
If Dallas had lost 34-14, I’d see nothing but vilification from you guys. This just shows that some of you can dish it out, but cant take it. You can spin it any way want, but I’m calling it like I see it.
Wow. Way too much money for Chapman. 15MM more than Strasburg? No way I’d do that deal…
Considering the other options are Joel Pinero and Doug Davis, we shouldn’t be surprised that he got so much. Teams desperate for pitching will take big risks with big money.
True jeffrey, but Chapman isn’t projected to be ML-ready right away, is he? I think I read that he’s likely to start in AA, but I could be wrong. Awful lot of money to give to someone who still needs a lot of polish.
jeffrey d……….or when a young pitcher is a free agent instead of being subjected to the amateur draft, it make perfect sense why Chapman is going to get paid more.
Baltimore is jumping on New England early. 75 yard run on the first play of the game for a TD. Brady gets stripped and Baltimore recovers inside the NE 20.
If it’s an NL team for the Cuban pitcher Chapman, I’m going to guess it’s the Marlins. Looking ahead to their move into the new stadium and all, hoping to capitalize on having a Cuban pitcher atop rotation ala Livan back in his 1997 World Series glory days….
joerochester……..we have a tough game in Minnesota. I have a lot of respect for Brett Farve. However, I have a lot of faith in Tony Romo, our 3 headed running attack, and our defense who not only puts pressure on the opposing QB, but also creates turnovers.
Kind of pathetic that some of you cant give someone props for picking the EXACT score of a game BEFORE it happens.
Kind of pathetic how much one adult can toot his own horn. But yes, good job on guessing a score.
But you also said that we could “bank on” Crayton breaking one, which didn’t happen. Since you’re wanting praise for something you got right, do you want us to make fun of you for something you got so wrong?
unbelievable………if it was the Nationals, then that would be a potentially good way to hedge their bets and hope that either Chapman or Strasberg will be the real deal. If both happen to be, then they will have a potentially very potent left-righty combination at the top of their rotation.
DOB.. The report is he left Ft. Lauderdale airport this AM to go sign.. I’m thinking he would have drove to Miami to sign if it was the Marlins. — OnDeckBatta10
Yes, that’d make sense. I wasn’t aware of that report. Thanks for the update.
jeffrey d…………Patrick Crayton didnt break one yes. However, I didnt take into account that he wouldnt return anymore punts because the Dallas defense would make the Eagles turn the ball over so much.
Still, he had about 4 really good returns that helped Dallas get some really good field position.
I agree, I was lucky with the score prediction. Still, one can go a whole lifetime without correctly predicting the correct score of a game. Kind of like hitting a hole and one.
If it’s an NL team for the Cuban pitcher Chapman, I’m going to guess it’s the MarlinsIf it’s an NL team for the Cuban pitcher Chapman, I’m going to guess it’s the Marlins
I understand the reasoning of bringing a Cuban pitcher to Miami, but isn’t $30 million more than their current payroll? I know it’s not $30 mil/year, but still. If it is the Marlins, I wonder if there’ll be an increase in emmigration from Cuba?
Here’s a little something I found last night that shows that Dallas can go into a hostile environment against a really good team and win an NFC Championship game:
joerochester………..not sure what time the game will be for sure. However, I’m pretty sure that it will probably be Saturday night (as not to have the winner of today’s Arizona-Green Bay play on a short week against against a rested New Orleans team).
DOB Im an oldtimer whos still listening to Dickey Betts and great southern, and assorted blues music. Now I do like good old R&R. Think I would like Radiohead?..Ive never listened to them.
To follow up on your 12:45pm post, UK and Florida have had good and great teams in the last 50 years (70s and 90s for UK and 00s for Florida) but weird timing has kept that streak alive. However, I think it says something more about Tennessee basketball than it does about other teams in the conference. Before Pearl, Tennesse just was not consistently a good team and did/could not schedule good teams to come play them just like mid majors. As I was talking about last night, the SEC has made some major strides in the last 10 years or so becoming a competitive basketbal conference instead of just a football one.
DOB-
if – and that’s a big IF- the Braves decide to sign Damon, do you think they’d do it without trading Melky or someone else? I’m not one that’s been bashing the Vazquez trade, but I will admit I’m not a big Melky fan. I’d rather see Hewyard/Schafer given a chance before Melky is named a starter. It would seem that trading either Melky or Diaz to sign Damon would be the way to go…it would clear $3 – 4 million to put toward a probable $6 – 8 million price tag of Damon.
the Niners need some receivers who can stretch a defense AND and offensive line who can protect Alex Smith.
I suppose they could use a burner, but having Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan is a lot better than most teams could say. Not to mention Frank Gore at RB. Offensive line is the issue. Staley and Heitman are the only players on that line worthy of starting.
Flange1: Yes, it’s Fox Bros., and I think they still sell it there one night a week. Not sure, though. Their restaurant is on Dekalb Ave. just south of Little Five Points….
Gotta be Cubs if it’s an NL Central team on the Cuban pitcher….
Bravissimo, I really don’t know if you’d like Radiohead. Some of it, I’d think so. They have some albums that are more rock ‘n’ roll, several that aren’t traditional rock in any sense, that are more experimental.
Go to the OK Computer album online somewhere, and try “Paranoid Android” and “Karma Police.”
jeffrey d……….your 1:25pm post wasnt so bad, was it? I realize that I was lucky with the score prediction. I’ve made a thousand different predictions over the years for a variety of different contests. Yesterday was the first time I’ve ever correctly picked the score of a game.
Still, the fact that I posted it online, for all to see BEFORE IT HAPPENED, is kind of neat. Anyone can SAY that they made a prediction. However, there is nothing like cold hard proof in writing that shows one was DEAD ON.
Lentz, The reason no one has responded to you is because NOBODY CARES that you guessed the final score of last night’s game. We are all sick and tired of reading your insults and constant need to boost your ego by asking for compliments or trying to prove yourself right. It just reflects how insecure you truly are. Maybe if you respected others you would get some respect in return, that’s usually how it works. At this point, people (including DOB and the majority of bloggers) just want you to go away.
Bravissimo: Here’s an older Radiohead tune. And if you don’t dig it, hey, I won’t be offended. They don’t appeal to all, but have a huge and rabid following worldwide for good reason, in my opinion.
Efrim………I watched the Niners played every game this year. Their inability to stretch a defense (it’s been this way for a number of years now) with a speedster at times made it tough for Frank Gore to run. The safeties can play up when they dont have to worry about getting beat by the deep ball.
Fred………I wanted to see Greg Norton released last instead of activated from the disabled list before the All-Star Break. However, obviously we dont always get what we want.
Thanks Dave…youre right..not really my cup of tea…mind you I was at the pop festival at Byron in 1970 and saw Jimi play with his teeth.
I was the the 3rd game the Braves ever played at Fulton county too…
Lentz, We will see about that. DOB mentioned he asked AJC staff to investigate having to register to gain access to this blog because he (and everyone else) is sick of the crap going back and forth on what otherwise is a great blog. Why do you think that is? Who do you think he was referring to? Don’t forget it’s his blog. How many of your posts has he deleted?
I watched the Niners played every game this year. Their inability to stretch a defense (it’s been this way for a number of years now) with a speedster at times made it tough for Frank Gore to run. The safeties can play up when they dont have to worry about getting beat by the deep ball.
You certainly didn’t pay attention(maybe that’s because you’re a Cowboys fan?), because Gore averaged 4.9 YPC. I don’t think a burner is necessary. Now, their rushing game wasn’t great(move to the spread offense mid season was partially the reason, Gore getting hurt and missing 3 games was another), but to say that the need of a “burner” receiver is the reason is wrong, imo.
DOB trying to stir crap up. MLBTR has a thing up on Damon where Olney has sources that tell him they are “convinced” Damon will end up back in NY. Damon is NOT coming to Atlanta as much as he’d seriously help our team and get that Mclouth out of leadoff. Wren has screwed himself in the ground with bad contracts to get anything of value like a Damon. Instead we’re stuck with injury risk players that have come on the cheap. Way to go Wren.
Lentz, The other question I have for you is why do you want to be at a place you aren’t wanted? Are you that desperate for human interaction? The fact that you have to go on Craig’s list for female “companionship” supports that theory. Trust me, you would be a lot happier if you would just engage in normal, respectable dialogue with others.
I completely agree with your assessment of the 49ers except for one thing- Chilo Rachel vastly improved throughout the season and he will be a good, solid O-lineman for a long time in my opinion (I watched him play at USC- he was excellent and at times totally dominate…give him a chance- you will like him )
I like the Ravens and dislike the Pats so its a good day so far.
Well I really just dislike Belichick truth be told.
All moot b/c my teams are the Falcons and yes the Jags. One team is on its way up the other, well wow who knows.
Perhaps we will see Cowher in Jacksonville this off season. One can only hope. And you know the Jags FO is going to push hard for Tebow to help with attendance.
Cowher & Tebow to the Jags would at least get people talking.
cabravesfan, you’re right about Rachel. He did improve, as did Baas. But they absolutely need a RT, as we have discussed. How about Warner retiring? Or reportedly will be retiring, at least. Would be a great thing for the Niners.
The only thing almost as good as sex (well after pizza, red wine and Ricky Bobby) is seeing the Yankes beaten and better than that is seeing the cheats in New England LOSE !

By the way, I could hardly believe when I read in Knoxville paper today that this will be the first time a No. 1-ranked team has visited Thompson-Boling Arena in its 23-year history. Last No. 1 to visit Knoxville was Kentucky — 43 years ago.
—————–
This is almost unbelievable but I was at the game that day. I was in Knoxville on a business trip and my salesman in that area was a good friend of Richmond Flowers Jr. Richmond was a flanker on the football team and also a world class track star.
The night before the game we played poker in my motel room and Richmond sat in on the game. He offered to get us tickets to the game the next day and two of us were happy to accept. We knew the game had been a long time sellout so imagine our surprise when Richmond escorted us to the end of the Tennessee bench where we sat during the game, all three of us, almost like a part of the team. We listened in on the chatter between the coaches and players.
That was during the time Tennessee was playing that stupid stalling defense where the final scores were often in the forties and occasionally the thirties or lower.
That Tennessee team (and a few others)kicked off the agitation for installing a shot clock although it didn’t come about until a number of years later when it ended that utterly stupid stalling tactic.
Fred while it would be great if AJC could block certain bloggers, I really dont see how they could. If you got banned you could just open up another email account and post under a different name. It would be great if they could do it, however dont see how it is possible.
I’m baaaaaack. I’m looking at our moves in the off-season and I’m actually satisfied. It doesn’t look as if we have and KJ’s or Frenchy’s to kill the lineup. Our pitching is still top-notch and I think Glaus can add that power bat if healthy. Hayward could also add another element. I also think we’re deeper than last year by a long shot. I’m looking forward to spring training.

Eric, requiring everyone to register would do the trick. It takes time to register and you can ban someone in a matter of seconds. It would not take long for them to grow tired of setting up new accounts, which takes time.

As I was talking about last night, the SEC has made some major strides in the last 10 years or so becoming a competitive basketbal conference instead of just a football one.

if – and that’s a big IF- the Braves decide to sign Damon, do you think they’d do it without trading Melky or someone else? I’m not one that’s been bashing the Vazquez trade, but I will admit I’m not a big Melky fan. I’d rather see Hewyard/Schafer given a chance before Melky is named a starter. It would seem that trading either Melky or Diaz to sign Damon would be the way to go…it would clear $3 – 4 million to put toward a probable $6 – 8 million price tag of Damon.

I suppose they could use a burner, but having Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan is a lot better than most teams could say. Not to mention Frank Gore at RB. Offensive line is the issue. Staley and Heitman are the only players on that line worthy of starting.

Efrim………I watched the Niners played every game this year. Their inability to stretch a defense (it’s been this way for a number of years now) with a speedster at times made it tough for Frank Gore to run. The safeties can play up when they dont have to worry about getting beat by the deep ball.

The fact that you have to go on Craig’s list for female “companionship” supports that theory. Trust me, you would be a lot happier if you would just engage in normal, respectable dialogue with others.

I completely agree with your assessment of the 49ers except for one thing- Chilo Rachel vastly improved throughout the season and he will be a good, solid O-lineman for a long time in my opinion (I watched him play at USC- he was excellent and at times totally dominate…give him a chance- you will like him

Efrim………Gore’s 4.9 yards pre carry rushing average is misleading. Gore had several long rushing gains that pushed that average up.
I never said that Gore couldnt run the ball. I said that “at times” the Niners inability to stretch a defense make it tough for them to run the ball.
“At times” does not mean “never being able to run the ball”.
