N8………..Your 12:09pm post is incorrect. You are the one whose memory isnt serving them correctly.
April 5th, 7th, and 8th, we take a series from Philly 2-1. May 8th, 9th, and 10th we take another series from Philly 2-1. July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd we sweep Philly 3-0. The first half of the season ended July 12th (All-Star Break).
Now if my memory serves me correctly and I learned simply addition correctly in the 1st grade……then 2-1, 2-1, and 3-0 equals 7-2……NOT 5-4 as you so emphatically stated in your 12:09pm post.
Enough with all this negative talk about how bad this team is going to be. They will be competitive in the division and with the pithching staff the Braves have they will challenge the Phillies for the top spot. These are professional players we are talking about they aren’t bad if they were that bad they would be playing in washington or in the Minor leagues.
The Braves pitching staff has JJ, Hanson, Hudson, and Lowe all capable of winning 15+ games with Kawkami a legit chance of winning 10 to 12 games.
Glaus is an upgrade over Kotchmen, having McLouth for a full season after spending last 1/2 season getting used to playing in the Braves uniform and in Atlanta. With have depth in the outfield, Melky, McLouth, Diaz, Heyward, Hinskie, and Schafer. I just don’t see chipper having a down year like he had last year. Escobar showed last year that he could come up with clutch hits when the Braves needed him and he improved his defense as well.
Throw in the fact that Bobby says it is his last year, that is enough in itself to motivate the players to go out and attempt to send him off as a winner.
I see this team winning any where from 87 to 95 games.
But let’s just wait and see if Wren makes anymore unexpected trades before the trade deadline in July.
Good 130ishAM post last night about the braves record against the playoof contenders of the league
Problem is last year they played down to the level of their competition…
The braves were garbage against teams like the Reds, Nats, Pirates, D-Backs, etc
You mention that the 93 braves beat up on teams that they were supposed to (I still can’t believe that they swept the Rockies for the season that year) . Well the 2009 braves team didn’t do that and it cost us
Now its time to hook up some Madden and bump some old Kid N Play
Daslied………..I saw a segment on 20/20 a few years back about some poor white trash hillbillies living in Kentucky. It seemed like the whole are had an addiction to Mountain Dew. Instead of feeding their babies baby formula or breast milk…..they were giving them Mountain Dew to drink, lol. Seriously, I’m not making this up.
Anyway, it chronicled how the younger kids would drink it every day. By the time these hillbillies hit their teens, their teeth started rotting and falling out. Yet they kept drinking it. Even the hillbillies well into adulthood were drinking it (with no teeth of course).
By then I’m sure that using meth played a part in the teeth being all fcuked up as well.
I think Wren’s willingness to go with two veterans for the backend of the bullpen in Wagner and Sait, actually speaks volumes to how highly they think of some of the kids and other relievers already on the roster. If Wagner goes down, Saito can step in. If Moylan goes down, Medlen can step in. If Saito goes down, Moylan bumps up. Eric O’Flare had a nice season. Then there is Kimbrel, Dunn and Chavez.
If Chipper goes down, Prado and or Glaus could move across the diamond. If Glaus goes down, Prado could fill in, with Infante moving to 2B. Or Hinske would step in (it’s why Wren got him, isn’t it?)
The players penciled in as starters (both bullpen guys, rotation guys and everyday players), are ALL capable of helping this team win if healthy. To top it off, this is probably (on paper) the deepest bench and 25 man roster this team has seen in half of a decade. Which SHOULD ease the minds of most Braves fans.
But alas, there is always somebody who just isn’t happy about ANY of the moves. They’ll just wait in the wings in case it does happen to blow up, ready to scream “I told you so” the second things go wrong, yet will disappear off of the blog quicker that one can blink their eye, if these moves pan out.
I’m willing to lay down a wager right now that Tomahawkin, Nick and the other handful of whiners will NOT even remotely admit they were wrong if this roster does what Wren thinks it will do. They will not apologize for calling Wren and idiot, and Liberty Media cheap.
Because everybody knows that when I’m wrong about a prediction, I’ve been man enough to say I was wrong.
The challenge has been made gentleman. Are you man enough to stick around if this all works out and call Wren a genius if that is the case? Or will you duck and run like the other whiners do?
I can understand complaining about things WHEN they go bad. I’m right there with you. I not only second guessed Wren for adding too much pitching and not enough bats last winter… I actually FIRST GUESSED it. It worried me from the get go.
But with the in-season moves last year (McLouth, Hanson, dumping Jeff and swapping Prado for KJ), it solved all that he ignored last winter. It happened to be too little, too late, since the team dug a hole in April through most of June. But alas, the problems were fixed.
So where’s the problem? Especially if Chipper “comes back”? Seriously. Where is the major weakness of this team. If Heyward is up and capable from the get go, with Melky and Diaz platooning in LF, all 8 positions have the outside chance at producing 15-20+ HR.
If Heyward isn’t ready, leaving Melky and Diaz to each play full time? Well then the power won’t be as prominant from the corner OF spots (though I think Diaz could hit 15-20 HR if he played full time. Cabrera plays solid defense, and would put up similar numbers to Loaf, so what’s the problem?
As was last year, Chipper will be the difference. I’m not even worried about Glaus. We got NOTHING from 1B until LaRoche arrived. Who’s to say if Glaus goes down, that Wren can’t make a move for a more capable guy than Hinske to play everyday at 1B, leaving Hinske on the bench and spot starting duty (where he will thrive)?
Way too much complaining about a team that finished the last 3 months of the season 50-36, and didn’t lose much of anything this off-season. Some (most) would say that the team has acutally been improved. Spout about the loss of Vazquez all you want. But the TEAM only went 18-14 in his 32 starts. I guarantee that the team will NOT play under .500 (16-16 at the worst) if Hudson makes 32 starts.
Add to that, while Hanson might have a sophomore slump to an extent, what he will provide will be better than what we got in the 5th starter spot for 9 starts out of Jo-Jo and Medlen in April and May before he arrived. NOBODY can deny that.
Lowe can’t really be any worse. KK should be better (his final 21 starts were excellent – even outdueled Roy Halladay 1-0).
Again. What are the weaknesses. Don’t just spout nonsense. Back your sh!t up with some cold, hard facts. CONVINCE ME that you have good reasoning behind your whining. Because the numbers, track records and good old fashioned common sense says that this team is every bit as good on papaer as the 86 win team from last year. Probably better.
Hey. Maybe we do finish in 3rd. Maybe we win 90 games, but the Phillies and Mets both win more.
But for some of you idiots to suggest that this is a 76 win team, has got to be some of the dumbest logic and predictions I’ve every read in 4 years on this blog.
But some of the fans on here who actually think that we can hang with Philly need to put down the Kool-Aid, Do any of you guys listen to 680AM? Mazzone is the only one who this this team has a chance
The Braves need to worry about passing the Mets and looking at the WC before they start thinking about if they can hang with Philly…
I expect the Cubs to bounce Back in the Central but finish behind St Louis so we will be battling them for the WC as well as the Fish, they always play us tough
Point is we need to think WC because as this team is constructed right now with so many “If’s” we will not be able to hang with Philly
And I’m already having nightmares of seeing Wagner against Utley and Howard in the 9th innings, Aren’t there pills you can take for that?
N8……..so you are going to ignore my 2:50pm post, even though I correctly pointed out how wrong your 12:09pm post was?
If you are quick to tell me that “my memory doesnt serve me correctly”……you should be quick to acknowledge that “your memory was the one who didnt serve you correctly”.
Tomahawkin—You and I appear to have the exact same tastes when it comes to Hip Hop/Rap. LOVE Southernplayalistic and Infamous albums!! Bone was great up to E.1999, the albums after that one were garbage to me though.
I loved Rap until the late ’90s, basically after Tupac died I thought Rap/Hip Hop took a big turn for the worse. I was a HUGE Tupac fan(think he’s the greatest solo rapper ever). I also loved Outkast, Goodie Mob, Notorious BIG, NWA, Dre, Snoop, Method Man, and Mobb Deep. I still listen to my CDs of those, but haven’t bought a new Rap CD in ten years probably. I’m into all music now, especially Classic Rock and a lot of New Rock.
First of All, I did not Call Wren an Idiot, he has done the best he could do with his limited amt. of funds available, but I don’t like the Hudson extension at all nor the Vazquez trade
Liberty Media on the other hand Is Flat out Cheap! And I have said that for the last 18 months, I will give you credit on that
Paul, I’m inclined to believe you about the Mountain Dew thing. People do some really dumb stuff with their kids. I remember seeing a show a few years ago, with a mom and her 100+ pound toddler. She said things like “He just gets so hungry and starts crying for chicken wings. What am I supposed to do?” Well, tell him “no”, you dullard.
I have seen people who drink Sun Drop (a Dew-type beverage, but worse) constantly and complain about their teeth falling out. Can whistle like a bird, though. Anyhoo, I gave up regular soda long ago. It had nothing to do with urban legend involving, um, male parts.
You allways say it a lot better than I do. Injuries are a big part of a 162 game schedule and Wren has done a remarkable job with the veteran versatility. Omar will play and contribute. Ross will play and contribute. Hinske will play and contribute. Diaz same. Cabrera same. Most versatile team in years – BAR NONE.
January 7th, 2010
1:54 pm
Just looking at some stats on Hinske. In 2008, dude hit .262 with an .844 OPS in 332 at-bats against RHPs, with 40 extra-base hits including 19 homers and 55 RBI. (Against lefties, he hit .143 with a .487 OPS in 49 at-bats that year).
So that’s a situational against righties coming off the bench. And after HEYWARD is on the club, DIAZ against lefties. I think MATT has improved against righties too unless my memory fails which it might.
Gettin’ old. BTW DAVE, is that a front tooth you had done in gold? Want to be able to spot you when the sun’s shining and you smile.
Alright Lentz, you’r right my calculation was ONE GAME off.
After June 28th (which is the timeline I framed out), the Braves were 6-6 against the Phillies. Before that date they went 4-2 against.
Sorry for missing the early August series in which they went 1-2 against the Phillies. I added up backwards off the schedule and missed that series, which gave me the 5-4 number, which made me assume that the first half was also 5-4.
But yes. You’re right. Down the stretch, the Braves went 3-6 against them. So yeah. If you’re counting the late June series that we swept them in, then yeah. They wen’t 7-2 earlier in the year, and 3-6 after that. But if you read my post, it clearly stated AFTER June 28th. So I was off by a frickin’ game. Thanks for correcting me.
End result is still the same. 22-15 against the NL playoff teams. Don’t bother arguing that point though.
Tomahawking, you might have missed it. But yeah, I acknowledged that point (playing down to the competition), last night. It’s a great, valid point. Couldn’t agree more. The old Braves teams that won 90+ games consistently, piled many of those wins up by dominating the lower tier teams. Time to start doing that, and not making rookies and journeymen look like Cy Young candidates.
Tomahawkin………….N8’s 2:59pm post was nothing but hot air. In it he emphatically stated how “he’s the first one to admit if he is wrong about something”.
However, if you go and read his 12:09pm post where he pounced on me for “my memory not serving me correctly”….and then read my 2:50pm post where I correctly pounced on him for “his memory not serving him correctly……..you’ll see him conveniently quiet and ignoring the fact that his 12:09 post was highly incorrect.
Daniel, I mentioned here this morning, Wilco is last week of spring training. Can’t leave Florida for a Wilco show in Atlanta in last week of spring training. I’ll try to see them down in Fla. or elsewhere, I guess.
50-36 bto finish the season, Whoopie! especially considering that the last 20 games were meaningless with most players and fans knowing that they had no shot especially after getting swept by Cincinnati. They played for pride during the last 20 games of the season because we all knew that they had no shot.
And how did the Braves do under pressure against Philly last year during the second half? Most of the bandwagon fans left this blog then when they found out that the braves can’t play well under pressure of playing the Phillies at a full Turner Field
And why the team went 18-14 in Vazquez starts was all on the AWFense, he was at the bottom of the totem pole as far as run support goes, especially during the first half
Daniel, yeah not the stud RB out of Utah, but the stud DE out of Arkansas…I think he is the new long snapper on the practice squad…could be wrong though!
i try to just drink water as much as i can. good for you for lots of reasons, good thirst quencher, doesnt hurt your teeth, saves you money at restaurants…my weakness is regular ol’ coke.
Rap Started going to the Toilet in 2002-03 thanks to Rap going to the Pop Tart Charts by the likes of Eminem and 50 Cent, Now its just Cartoonish Garbage, even I like to get Krunk to Lil Jon and Pit-Bull every now and then
Oh yeah I’ve been on a binge of Old DMX, Busta Rhymes and Queen Latifah
And the Last CD I bought was Stankonia and Mystikal “Ready to Ride”
Unbelievable: Why’s it seem odd? Diet Mt Dew, Diet Coke, etc, have same or similar caffeine as regulars, unless you’re getting caffeine-free kind of diet. I don’t get the caffeine-free kind.
The last 3 Wilco albums are as creative and different made by any band. DOB, can’t stop listening to Monsters of Folk. Thanx for the suggest. Is it Marvin Gaye, Van Morrisson, Radiohead, Bob Dylan – What? It’s just fantastic, especially the first and last songs on the CD.
It’s Imperative that we beat up on the bottom dwellers outside of the division, becuse the east is gonna be rough
No one is worried about the mets but I think they will bounce back, then again his Johan’s elbow falls off (which I am Banking on to happen, he’s due because of all the nagging elbow injuries he;s had over the last 2 years in S. Training) they are in trouble
“They played for pride during the last 20 games of the season because we all knew that they had no shot.”
2 games back with 6 to play. Yup. You’re right. No chance.
Your logic is flawed at best. I get it. You’re angry. Your life sucks. Why watch? Why blog? Why care? You didn’t go away when they allegedly had “no chance”? Why? to root for them to lose?
“And why the team went 18-14 in Vazquez starts was all on the AWFense, he was at the bottom of the totem pole as far as run support goes, especially during the first half”
Hey guess what Tomahawkin? After June 28th, you know, when the offense was FIXED, the Braves went 12-4 in Vazquez’s 16 starts. Meaning they went 6-10 before then.
So you see. The offense did their job after that date. Or didn’t you read how after June, in 87 games, they only scored 2 runs or less, 17 times? Which means that if the offense is as good as it was after June 28th last year, ALL OF THE PITCHERS WHO DIDN’T GET RUN SUPPORT (JJJ, KK included), will produce more TEAM wins.
About the payroll – We all wish Ted Turner was back, but Liberty has given FW a chance to put together a pretty good team. (problems began with Time-Warner. Liberty has increased some) There are a lot of teams that would love to have $90 to work with, and have won with less. Also, several teams have spent a lot more and sucked (Mets, for example)
DOB, hows your heart doing? 8 cups of coffee a day plus seat tea at restaurants, thats some serious caffeine intake. my dad had to start drinking decaf and caffeine free coke recently…
DOB, I have one of those 40ish tall blonde dentists down here in Stuart. She does great work.
I also have a female Urologist. There aren’t many of them around. I asked her the other day if many men shied away from a lady urologist and she replied, with a grin, “only the Italian men.”
This team, as currently constructed, can win alot of games. We have the pitching to keep us in every game. When you look at the team it is very deep overall. This really looks like the kind of team built for the regular season. Wren’s goal is to get the Braves back to where they belong, the post season. Once we get there, as constructed, we probably dont have the Play Makers/Super Stars to go deep into the playoffs. But bottom line is this team looks like it has a chance to win during the regular season.
As long as they take care of business against the teams they “should” beat. like the nationals for instance
Yeah, you got your Feelings hurt watching this team fall flat during the last month when the pressure was on them. I knew they were done after getting swept by Cincinnati at home while scoring 6 runs that whole 3 game series so therefore I didn’t fall into the “Believe” hype
N8……..Your 3:10pm “correction” is a joke. You was not off by “one game”.
In your 12:09pm post, you so emphatically said (this is a direct quote from the second paragraph in that post) “It didn’t serve you correctly. Before June 28th, we went 5-4 against them. After June 28th, we went 5-4 against them.”
In an 8:03am post, I stated the following (direct quote): “N8………..If memory serves me correctly, the Braves went 7-2 against the Phillies the first part of the season. then we finished up 3-6.
Our 10-8 record was misleading because even by going 7-2 in the first half of the season against the Phillies, we were still behind them in the standings.
When it mattered in the second half of the season, we faltered down the stretch against superior competition (and let’s not forget the 0-6 meltdown at home against the Marlins and Nationals to end the season).”
That was in response to your 3:27am post about how “we managed to go 10-8 against the Phillies despite pitching to Ryan Howard”.
Also to fill you in on a little tid bit of info…….the “first half” of the season is widely considered by most to be the number of games played before the All-Star Break. The “second half” consists of games played after the All-Star Break. The 81 game mark isnt what most people think of when it comes to the “half-way point” of season.
You never said anything about “going 4-2″ (or is that something that you just “made up” to make it appear that you was barely off?).
I don’t know if you have Winn Dixie stores up there, but they have a Diet Cream Soda that is awesome!!! If you get a chance, check it out. Its like a dessert!
For those who don’t check many stats I’d like to call your attention to the following.
Prado batted .300 during his minor league career and had a .747 OPS. In his major league career he has batted .307 and has a .810 OPS. The man just keeps getting better. He is only 26 and I think one of the most reliable players on the Braves roster.
I would just like to take a moment to thank all of you that have been discussing Mountain Dew. I am now sitting at my desk drinking Mountain Dew…I don’t even like Mountain Dew. I blame you all!! (And my total lack of willpower, but mainly I BLAME YOU! )
Tom Waits- Jim James is the leader of the band My Morning Jacket. He is the one on the MOF with the angelic, soul singer style voice. I love Bright Eyes and M. Ward, but My Morning Jacket is superior. If you enjoyed Monsters of Folk, you simply MUST listen to some MMJ. I would reccomend the albums: At Dawn and Z to start with, but they are all great.
Tomahawkin—I didn’t think about DMX, Busta Rhymes, and Mystical sitting here at work. Liked Mystical and DMX’s early stuff a lot. Busta Rhymes was pretty good, I liked his videos more than his music though, guy was a nut!
And also just remembered Da Brat and Too Short’s early stuff, loved Da Brat and kinda liked Too Short as well.
Just tried Domino’s new pizza. (They claim a new recipe). Well, it’s greasier than before, if you’re curious. But better? I dunno. It was mediocre before, and it’s mediocre now.
Why did I order dominos, anyway, you ask?
Well…Pittsburgh is home to probably the worst pizza in America. I’m not kidding. the pizza is abysmal.
I’ve tried like 10 different small pizza joints and they all suck.
And the chains? Not much better. My nearest Pizza Hut is blegh. Papa Johns is next to impossible to find, Little Caesars is iffy, at best… and then there’s Dominos.
Oh, Atlanta, how I miss thee…
(Savage Pizza, Everybody’s Pizza, Little Five Pizza, Big Pie in the Sky, Fellini’s)
Tomahawkin: I’m not completely happy with the current lineup as it is today. As many have said, there are a lotta IF’s?
But the budget is the budget and the difference in the Vazquez/Hudson swap will mostly pay for Glaus.
We as fans are stuck with Liberty Media at least a few more years, so Frank Wren and company are making the right choices of adding prospects for the future, while taking some risks in the present.
I can see the team rounding into more of a contender next year or more likely the year after, when Schafer replaces McLouth, Freeman replaces Glaus and Kimbrell replaces Wagner. If Chipper struggles and retires he could be replaced by Glaus. They could trade for a RH outfielder power hitter or possibly sign Jason Werth- the Phillies will not try to keep him, they have a replacement. I also think that Derek Lowe will still be traded at the trade deadline or during the off season sometimes between this summer and the 2012 season. Teams will be willing to take on a shorter term contract, if he pitches to his normal track record. Medlen will probably replace him and after the 2012 season Teheren, Vizcaino, Minor or Delgado will replace KK.
I am convinced it will get better, but waiting is a BIT*H!
Tom- The band has evolved over time from a Gothic Southern Rock group to a more expiermental groove band (with some 70’s AOR). Although, Jim clearly has an Erykah Badu/Karen Carpenter obsession. You really can’t go wrong with any of them. I guess “Z” and “At Dawn” are my favorites. DOB may have a different opinion of which albums to start with.
If everybody can stya reasonably healthy, and Chipper and Lowe rebound, and Prado and Hanson don’t experiance any kind of sophomore slump, then this team has a legitimate shot at contending for the wild card. That’s a lot of “if’s” Even then, the lack of a true ace and the punchless outfield would likely prevent the team from advancing in the playoffs.
A year ago I thought Wren over signed pitching, and I still think that. If Wren hadn’t signed Lowe he would still have Vazquez and some money to spend. What made that logjam in the rotation so frustrating was that Wren knew Huson would be back in 2010. We knew Hanson and Medlen were knocking at the door. He also signed Glavine, and still had Campillo and Carlyle on the roster. Smoltz wanted to come back, and there were a number of guys like Garland out there that took 1 year deals last year. When you consider that Wren had to know that his team wasn’t ready to compete offensively in 2009, there just wasn’t any justifiable reason to spend $60 million on Lowe.
Had Wren not signed Lowe last year, and not made any in-season trades the Braves would still have probably finished in third place. And for all the moves made this year its hard to say if this team is better than the one that finished 3rd last year. That Renteria for Jurrjens trade has convinced many of you to give Wren a free pass. If you put that trade aside what’s left ain’t that impressive.
Honestly since they’ve moved to Disney world, the entire atmosphere has changed. West Palm Beach was Baseball heaven, right below Vero Beach, Which is no more as well, What a shame! Ive been mid march to late march and theirs really no difference. If you have kiddos goin, earlier is better for the autographs, If you wanna watch the starters later is better as they will be in the game longer.
N8………Nope, my 3:10pm post hit the nail on the head. Your weak A$$ attempt of “correcting yourself” consisted of making it look like you was off by 1 game.
I went back and posted direct quotes of what you said. You said 5-4 in the second half when in fact we went 3-6 against the Phillies in the second half.
So you can spin it all you want about your so called “June 28th half way of the season date”……however you said “5-4 in first half, 5-4 in second half”…..when in fact I correctly stated that we went 7-2 in the first half, 3-6 in the second half.
Yet you slammed me for “my memory not serving me correctly”.
By the way…in case you have any doubt as to the definition of first half and second half of the season…..here’s a link to ESPN’s break down stats of first and second half of the season:
Thanx Dude, I’m a music guy when it compliments the lyrics. That is to say, Dylan, Waits, Zevon, Westerberg, Eitzel, G Welch, L Williams, E Smith, W Nelson, Boss, T Van Zandt – well, you get it.
And my total lack of willpower, but mainly I BLAME YOU!
Willpower is meaningless before the power of this blog. It is a small and doomed sapling to be swept away by the raging and unrelentless force of the forum.
You have nothing of which to be ashamed. Braves/MIB makes strong men weep and stronger women drink Mountain Dew. Just the way it is.
ca braves – that is just cruel… I come from the hottest place on earth where rain is but an afterthought and 50 degrees is freezing…. 110 the summer norm ! but NYC is a cold tough place… not for weenies like moi
been looking at a house in Corona del Mar to buy,… figure anything named after a beer must be a good place to live…… is CDM nice ??
nyc – I have some places in Orlando (Winter Springs) and 1 in Tampa…….. how to halve your money in 1 year by G Parsons….. anyway that looks great……. but I need to get out of the city like now
Sorry! (OK, not really ) Corona del Mar is absolutly beautiful! My grandparents have lived there for 30+ years- I go down there several times a year. It’s not cheap, though (as if anywhere in Southern California is…) but well worth it
Was a little bored and did some research on the top 10 vote-getters from the 2002 ROY race. Pretty inauspicious list….. Of the top 10, Lackey and Carlos Pena were the only two that amounted to much.
N8………..You really have no out here. Your assertion of being off by one game is absurbed. No where did you ever say that “we went 4-2 before June 28th”. You said 5-4 in the first half, 5-4 in the second half.
Remember, you was “correcting” my earlier post where I said that we went 7-2 in the first half, yet faltered to 3-6 in the second half when battling for the play-offs intensified. That is why I said that you stating that the Braves went 10-8 against the Phillies was misleading.
You started all this by saying that “my memory didnt serve me correctly”. Next time, do some better homework before making statements like that. Your “correction” post made it appear that the Braves were consistent against the Phillies all year long (your assertion of the Braves going 5-4 in the first half, 5-4 in the second half asserts the Braves were consistent against the Phillies all year long……which is what I did not agree with).
Yet you still arent willing to admit you was wrong. Typical, but not surprising.
The Fillies won 94 games last year. Explain to me how Baez, Polanco and Halladay minus Lee makes them 5 games better?
Halladay is the most consistent and reliable Ace pitcher in the game. You can pencil him in for 20 wins with this club. In addition he’s the best workhorse in the game, and the only guy who probably could do a complete game nearly every night if asked. Therefore he saves the bullpen an inning nearly every start. Even in games he doesn’t win, he reduces their reliance on the dregs of their bullpen and gets them to the stronger members of their pen.
Polanco is nice to have. Can’t hurt.
Another reason I think the phillies break 100 wins is they might actually have a modest divisional race this year. Last year the race was over by about July, allowing the Phillies no real need to push for a win every night. If the Mets or Braves get anywhere near a 90+ win pace, Philly should respond and grind out an extra win or two that wasn’t needed last year.
well said, I believe that the 2010 Braves can be very competitive and while I hate projecting, should win between 80 and 90+ games.
Most people forget how many errors the Braves made last year. (Chipper alone made 20) In adtdition to the changes to the offense, if the Braves can reduce the errors, they will come out on top of some of those close games lost. I also think the pen/ closer situation is much improved this year which should keep the scores closer and produce wins.
Bottom line is that, in the majors, it is the small things that tip the balance in games and if the Braves can do the small things right, they will win more games.
Why do you continue to miss the big picture? ML schedules are 162 games and the Braves went 10-8 against the NL Champion. The 2010 Braves are much deeper, versatile than the 2009 version. The bullpen is much improved – and I don’t want to hear about injuries. They are part of the game as 2 lost years from Soriano and Gonzalez have proven.
wjones………..”cash prizes for math” has nothing to do with it. N8 pretty much slammed me for commenting on one of his earlier posts. I posted that the Braves going 10-8 against the Phillies in 2009 was pretty misleading because even though we went 7-2 against them in the first half, we were still behind them in the standings.
However, in the second half we faltered to 3-6 against them, when the play-off race was heating up.
He countered by asserting that “my memory didnt serve me correctly” because the Braves went 5-4 in the first half of the season, 5-4 in the second half.
Yet he so “elegantly” stated that he is the “first to admit when he is wrong”.
Tomahawkin – “And I’m already having nightmares of seeing Wagner against Utley and Howard in the 9th innings, Aren’t there pills you can take for that?”
Great post man…and yes there are pills for that…the only problem is i took them all after we signed Saito.
—————
Southeast Florida did not disappear when the Braves moved to Disney and the Dodgers left Vero Beach. As a matter of fact the Mets train at Pt. St. Lucie and the Cardinals and Marlins train at Jupiter, north of W. Palm Beach.
I live between Pt. St. Lucie and Jupiter and there is baseball all over the place. As a matter of fact many of the players can be spotted in night spots all over the place during spring training.
cabraves – I am the world’s worst ever property buyer but I can get a nice house on the bay entrance for like 50 cents on the previous crazy 2007 high $$$$ … and taxes arent too bad versus NY and Jersey… just gotta get the missus out of NY for 1/2 year.. already tried the Vegas route but she is too smart for that one and my girl in the next year and 1/2 is going to college in the south or CALI … I tried the ATL route which fell flat as well
Three things: Can we negotiate another bet where one of us has to go away forever? Thank you for no longer using the word “posting.” And, you shouldn’t repeatedly use “was” in place of “were” if you’re going to correct another. (You was, I mean, were right, though.)
Tom Waits wears Redwing boots, January 7th, 2010, 2:52 pm … “The Fillies won 94 games last year. Explain to me how Baez, Polanco and Halladay minus Lee makes them 5 games better?”
They take five more games from the Nationals? Polanco VORPs off the charts?
There was no more rationality behind my post than behind the posts saying the Braves would win 75 games.
But hey, a race with two teams winning nearly 100 games? And the season ends with my team, the Bravos, winning? That’s what I want to see!
Tom Waits/Red Wing: Daniel’s right — you really should listen to My Morning Jacket. One of the great bands going, and right up your alley. You should get their most recent album, “Evil Urges” from 2008, if you want the real eclectic stuff. It’s a bit out there, with a couple of tunes that sound like Prince. Great album, but not like anything they did before. I’d instead start with the “Z” album, or live “Okonokos,” then try Evil Urges and some of their earlier CDs like “It Still Moves” and “At Dawn” and “The Tennessee Fire.” All their stuff’s great, really. Can’t go wrong with any of it.
DOB,
Do you wish the AJC would lift the “No Vote” rule when you see Hall of Fame Ballot results that have David Segui receiving a vote? It’s a shame someone like yourself doesn’t get a chance to vote but some clueless idiot from the Seguiville Tribune does. I can’t come up with any justification for that crap, and I think that guy should have his job lifted and his ass kicked for making a mockery of the voting process.

Understand now?

Congrats.

The second link has the Braves schedule from after the All-Star Break until the end of the season.
If you scroll to the top of the page, you can see where one can click “first half” and “second half” of the season.

N8,
well said, I believe that the 2010 Braves can be very competitive and while I hate projecting, should win between 80 and 90+ games.
