personally think the upgrade from McLouth to Damon at leadoff would be greater than the upgrade from Escobar to Player X in the 6-hole, considering the likely options for Player X at this point. RC

what upgrade? take his numbers away from NYY and there is no significant upgrade. plus he is old enough to hit the wall at any minute

but their [Johnny Damon and Luke Scott] offensive numbers are very similar and Scott makes a lot less money

Dude’s right. They are. But he is another #6 hitter and the Braves are a team full of #6 hitters. Still, can’t argue the numbers…

Pet Peeve:
When people list out a starting lineup, as if it is the lineup card that Bobby Cox will hand to the umpire before the game.

Why do you list a lineup on this blog??
Braves fans know who we have and don’t have. It’s not like we are accidently going to figure jeff francoeur as one of our OF and batting 6th.
So if you are figuring there are non-Brave fans on here that we want to list the lineup for…
Other than SS, 3B & C, there is nothing to be proud of. Seriously, when you list Prado, McLouth, Glaus, Diaz, Melky, Infante, Shaefer, etc…. do you think that’s going to cause someone to let out a sigh of Aaawwwweeee Man, they are a force to be rekon with.

I think the only exception would be for purposes of LH, RH, or Switch hitters.

Topic: Theo Epstein

I’ll give the kid credit, he won 2 titles.

BUT

The kid has been given license to do things other GM’s would get fired for. He eats more money and makes trades for players that he already has on his staff.

If it is true and he has signed Beltre, then he also has Lowell that is injured and untradable now that everyone knows he has an injured thumb. He signs Smoltz for 5m guaranteed and cuts him. Trades for LaRoche and then gives him to us for Kotchman and eats some of LaRoche’s salary.

Obviously ownership is cool with it, but that kid is operating on one seriously long leash!

Canadian Braves Fan,

Has nothing to do with being prejudice.
The Braves still field a lot of pressure from groups concerning this issue.
JS had to deal with this heat just a few short years ago (answering questions as to why the Braves did not have more blacks than they did).
Major league baseball (as a whole) still has to deal with this issue. They are are placing a lot of money into inner cities and other areas to recruit more blacks.
It’s a REAL issue.
That, my friend, is having a real grip on the truth to the matter.

Nolie — I agree with you, Damon’s not the answer. Better to hand on to the cash until a real power hitter becomes available, if that happens at all. If Schafer comes on strong in ST and Gwinnett I’d love to see him and Heyward in the same outfield. If those two are both knocking on the door by mid-June, this team should be very competitive. Keep all those low minor league arms and Freeman. The team looks to me like it’s on the rise, don’t screw it up with more aging guys if they cost us good prospects.

So the Mets and Red Sox are thinking about a Lowell for Castillo swap? Is it just me or does it seem like the Mets undervalue him a little bit. I mean, he puts up decent numbers for a second baseman. He walks more than he K’s, he’s good for 20 steals, hits for a pretty good AVG. His defense is a little sloppy, and he’s probably slightly overpaid at 6 mil per year, but why do they hate him so much up there?

Marko, I know that I made a lineup on the blog, but I am trying to stir the pot and make it known that Diaz should be considered to bat leadoff and if we acquire Damon he should bat second. You’re right that I am probably wasting my time. You know why? It’s because Bobby Cox is one of the worst managers when it comes to making a lineup. He totally ignores streaks and on base percentage. He had KJ and his terrible obp batting leadoff for way too long last season!! The problem is Bobby.

Dave, I’m lukewarm on Damon. Yes, the guy is a decent player, but do we really need another important cog on our team who is in his late 30s? We already have 37 year old Derek Lowe as one of our top starters, and 39 year old Billy Wagner as our closer, not to mention soon to be 38 year old oft injured Chipper, as our lifer player.

I’d sooner take a chance on a Matt Diaz/ Melky Carbrea platoon, or just having one of them play left or right field.

The only way I’d do a deal for Damon is if it was for one year, with a second year option, or two years, max. Boras likes long term deals, so I doubt he’ll go for that.

Also, I dont think FW will do it.

Macon Braves (RIP)…..As I said, if we were to sign Damon to play left field, then we would be putting ALL our hopes for power from the right side of the plate in Troy Glaus. If Glaus gets hurt or is a flop, then we will have very little power from the right side.

Matt Diaz, Yunel Escobar, Martin Prado, and Chipper Jones batting right handed………do not hit for much power. Diaz, Prado, Escobar and Chipper (from the right side) combined for 47 homers last year. That isnt much power from the right side of the plate.

When I said that signing Damon would give me reason to be concerned about our lack of balance……I guess that I should have been specific by saying “lack of balance in power from the right side of the plate”. I should have known that saying that Glaus getting hurt or being a bust would leave us with very little power from the right side of the plate…..would not be specific enough for some of you.

To think this team improves to the point it needs to in order to contend in the division SIMPLY by spending our last $7-$9mm is the definition of OPTIMISM.

I honestly believe we have to trade a couple of top prospects and Melkey or comprable/non-essential everyday player for a big bat whose current team then picks up a % of the salary.

“ok, fine. if you admit that its just a hunch and there isnt any evidence of it, especially notthe laroche situation, i dont know what we are arguing about. im glad we sorted that out. “

Never said there was no evidence — that’s what hunches are based on: imperfect knowledge reasonably extrapolated. The evidence is that they traded Vazquez, and did not extend him. The reasonable extrapolation is that they would have attempted to extend before trading him.

See dogsbrekky for evidence validating the extrapolation.

And I “admitted” that my Vazquez speculation was a hunch UP-FRONT when I first made it.

But LaRoche is no hunch — it is a fact that the Braves concluded that they would not be able to sign LaRoche at a price ($/years) they were willing to pay.

Or do you think that they signed Glaus instead of LaRoche because they thought that Glaus was actually the better player? If they could have signed LaRoche to the same contract they signed Glaus to, who do you think they would have signed? Think, man, think.
