David O’Brien………..I just came across your 12:26pm post. I’ll respect your request to lay off the climate change topic.
I had some things to do today. I started where I left off last night and was commenting as I read stuff I felt compelled to respond to. I didnt see the request you made until just now.
oh and like john smoltz claims b4 he was divorced and needed more money and a big contract late in his career… the braves are the biggest liers in the league!
Nolie: Glaus can make up to $2.25 million in incentives in 2010 that are tied to staying off the disabled list and in the lineup, including a $250,000 bonus if he’s on the roster 100 days. The rest of the incentives are triggered by plate appearances — $350,000 each for 400, 450 and 500 PAs, $400,000 for 550, and $550,000 for 600.
That’s $250,000 for 100 days on roster, then $350,000 more for 400 PAs, $350,000 more for 450 PAs, $350,000 more for 500 PAs, $400,000 more for 550 PAs, and $550,000 more for 600 PAs. If he gets 600 PAs, he’ll make $4 mill total, salary and incentives. If he makes 500 PAs (but less than 500) he’ll make just over $3 mill, and so on.
For those of you who say ATL is no better than they were last year, lets take a look at projected 2010 starting line-up vs 2009 original projected line-up.
CF – McLouth vs Shaffer, winner McLouth (2010)
LF – G. Anderson vs M. Diaz, winner Diaz (2010)
RF – Heyward/Cabrera vs Francoeur, winner Heyward/Cabrera (2010)
3B – no change but would be shocked if Chipper’s numbers are not better
SS- no change and expect the same production
2B – Johnson vs Prado, winner Prado (2010)
1B – Kotchman vs Glaus, Glaus can out hit kotchman with one arm (2010)
C – same, but he can see now
So the Braves improved at 5 of the 8 positions and can realistically expect better production from Chipper and McCann while Escobar stays about the same. How can anyone say this team hasn’t improved? This is a 90 win team, I dont think they overtake Philly but if you can field a 90 win team and let the other pieces fall where they may then as a GM on a limited payroll you have done your job.
Now that Wren has finally come out and admitted what some of the more realistic members of this here blog suspected — limiting payroll was going to trump competing for the playoffs thos season — we can put all the Bay/Holliday/LaRoche/Damon/Dye stuff behind us and take a hard-nosed look at what the Braves remaining needs are.
At this point, I think we can fairly assume that the pitching staff is set, with some competition for the spots at the back of the ‘pen. Of the 13 non-pitchers who will make the opening day roster, there are 3 wide open positions available, depending on the plans for Heyward and/or Schafer.
If both Heyward and Schafer begin the season at Gwinnett, the Braves will need to look elsewhere for a 4th and possibly 5th OF, because Blanco and BJones are simply not the answer. Neither is the other Jones, whose minor league numbers last season are a product of where he played. He might be a candidate for the Norton PH role.
The available player best suited to the Braves’ needs is Aubrey Huff, who would provide a productive bat behind Glaus & Chipper, an absolute necessity. He can also play the corner OF spots, and should have no problem getting plenty of ABs, along with Infante.
If Conrad can hit like he did before he was sent back down (he was awful after getting recalled), he could hold down a back-up middle infield job. DHernandez doesn’t hit enough to warrant a roster spot, so the Braves may have to comb through the long list of veteran backups to fill that role.
I know a lot of you have been reluctant to accept the financial realities of this ownership group and its adherence to the bottom line, but reality bites. This is no longer Ted Turner’s team. Or even AOL/TWs.
The Braves haven’t nearly reached the level of the Pirates, Padres, Royals & Indians. But the Vazquez deal and the inability to upgrade the offense indicates that they are moving away from looking on themselves as a serious playoff contender, and have joined the ranks
of the “if everything falls into place, maybe we can get the wild card” kind of team.

“They CAN compete with a 90 milliond dollar payroll, they did it last year.”
We didn’t compete in 2009. Not the way most people see it. Playoff bound or else you had a moderate year at best. We finished 3rd in our division. Being in the back of the wildcard race and not getting it isn’t competitive in my book.

Dave –
Have you seen The Blind Side, the true story movie about Baltimore Ravens right tackle Michael Oher? I think it is fabulous and funny in many parts….Sandra Bullock in another great role, and Tim McGraw has some very funny lines. Thanks, Bruce
MZ: Come on, man. That’s not fair to Lucero. Those guys have a great band, but you’re asking me who’s better, them or one of the great power-pop bands in history. Big Star is cited as an influence by many of the greatest bands of the past 20-30 years. Big Star was like a comet, but their body of work will live forever. Genius stuff, man. Alex Chilton? I mean, really. That’s seminal songwriting. The whole band was terrific.
I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to spring training. We try to catch a couple Braves away games in Jupiter, about a half hour from our condo. The thought of Heyward and Schafer in the same outfield really excites me.
We all know what Heyward’s potential is, but from what I saw of Schafer last spring, this guy is really loaded with talent. His defense is flat-out somewhere between outstanding and sensational. Selfishly, I would prefer both Heyward and Schafer spend 2 or 3 months in Gwinnett, the at-bats can only help build their confidence and development and, also in the case of Heyward gives the Braves 6.6 years of control. I don’t know how that would figure into Schafer’s years of control before free agency.
Add in Freeman a year or year and a half down then road, then the possibility of a couple top-flight starters knocking on the door the following year or so… whew. What’s not to like about the Braves during this next decade. I know, plenty could go wrong with these guys, but I see the club’s future as really exciting. I’m stoked.
Hmm, can’t say I’m pleased with the news about the Braves being done spending (minus the PH). That the Braves can still have the same payroll as last year at the moment just seems rediculous. Come on, they are already counting in a buyout that isn’t even garunteed to be used 2 years down the road?? Maybe I don’t understand the payroll stuff like I thought I did, maybe I’m just extremely dissapointed that the amount of money available has shrunk from projections as high as $22 million to at the limit with just the signing of a high risk player (I’m not complaining about Glaus, I think it was a good signing). But are that many salaries increasing on the roster even after the suctraction of Kelly and Church? Just makes the Vazquez trade seem unnecesary and where the team could be better with him.
The Braves still have a decent team. They are better than they started last year, maybe a little worse than where they ended. The pitching staff will be among the best. The offense won’t be the worst. I just expected a better offseason than what we’ve seen.
So who are the PH guesses? Just for fun: Garrett Anderson. I don’t think he is going to get an offer to have anything more than a bench role, and will have to take that or retire. And it probably won’t take much money. He didn’t burn any brifges here as far as I know, so why not? Maybe I’m just crazy
Agree that the McLouth option for 2012 is a mute point at this time. However, if Schafer developes like the Braves hope he does, McLouth looks like to me an ideal trade chip to cover a need next winter. Therefore, it would be someone else’s problem to worry about the option.
dogsbrekky—You’re right, I know. Sometimes my bad side gets the better of me and the guy makes himself such an easy target. But I’ll listen to the little guy sitting on my other shoulder now and follow your advise. Like I told nolie earlier…when you’re right, you’re right!
Earlier today, I stated that I’d rather read Lentz’s posts than all the crap about global warming.
So what happens when the evening rolls around?
Now we’ve got frickin’ Lentz posting about global warming.
Un FF’n real. Is is so frickin’ hard to keep the conversation away from that topic? Seriously? Really? No. I’m not F’n kidding?
Unless darkstar freezes and then bursts into flames, I don’t see the relevance of how warm or cold the globe is on a Braves blog.
“Being two games behind the wild-card leader with six games to play isn’t competitive, huh? Richbrave, these aren’t the rich Braves. You might need to rethink what competitive is, or be in line for a lot of disappointment.”DOB
Thank you for saying it. I’ve been fighting the good fight (yeah me… bowl of sad, Debbie Downer, ultimate pessimist…), all evening with this, and pretty much stated the same exact thing.
Perhaps when you type it it will have more credibility. Then again, morons is morons and it just probably won’t sink in.
DOB, I’m surprized you haven’t busted my balls for siding with Favre’ and the Vikings until the NFC title game in N.O.?
Not that I’ve changed my tune much. I’ve stated all along that neither the Vikings or Saints will lose a home playoff game. Rooting for the Vikings to lose, and claiming they were going to do so are two different things.
That’s how annoying Lentz and his Cowboy nonsense is. He’s now forced me to root FOR the Vikings just so it shuts his ass up. That sucks. I guess I can root for the Eagles. That would simplify things a tad, huh?
Rumor Has It………You are hitting them way out of the park today with your blasts on “Wayne in Utah”. Your 8:08pm post once again calls Wayne out on his tendency to blow out of proportion one part of what you say.
Nice to be able to sit back and enjoy reading someone putting old Wayne in his place. Way to go dude.

Hey, I don’t disagree with you … I was just thinking since Memphis had come up, I’d try to spark a little debate/discussion … speaking of Chilton, went home for the holidays and snagged a bunch of my dad’s stuff, including The Box Tops’ greatest hits … “Cry Like a Baby” is such a great song, such a great song (as is the more popular, “The Letter”)
I also got a whole bunch of good 70s nuggets, like: Bellamy Bros., Billy Joe Royal, Brownsville Station, Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show, Hot Chocolate, The Ides of March and Pilot …
As Paul Westerberg and The Replacements famously sang:

Words cant describe how disappointed I am in the Braves this offseason. They are the clear-cut biggest losers of the offseason. This is going to be a downward spiral. They will be worse this year and ownership will cut payroll again and so on until we are another Padre or Royals organization. We need ownership that will be willing to spend $150 Mil like the Mets and Phillies or will we always be a 3rd/4th place team. Cutting payroll by $10 Mil is pathetic especially when our ownership invest billions in satellite radio. No player on this current team will hit over 25 homers or surpass 100 RBI. 70-92 and last place. Go Braves..
I was most sincere when I thanked you earlier for making my point for me at 9:21pm. This day and that exact time will be a moment I remember for ions. (and you can tell I am serious because I didn’t call you names, and I am actually enjoying your joy in my earlier escapades!)
How ya doing tonight nolie? I like the fact that FW is going to wait and let things develop in the spring. Being an eternal optimist, I think our young guys will come through for us this spring. But I could be wrong, heck I’ve been wrong quite a few times already here today!
I’m Here, lol I’m really excited about the new changes in the right direction finally. A real Head Coach and a GM thats knows somthing. things will get better!
DOB —–
you know who I think was pretty underrated (and I’ve probably mentioned them before): The Babys … “Back On My Feet Again” is great power-pop, IMO … John Waite at his best, if you ask me
It really doesn’t always come down to money. While it is hard (if your not the Twins or the Marlins) to win consistently with very little money, it comes down to how you spend it.
Though nobody will say this, I suspect FW will have a little extra if he needs another arm or bat in mid season.
Compare our roster now with our roster last April. We are better off. Vazquez or no Vazquez. Wagner will be more reliable than Soriano or Gonzo. Saito will do just fine, unless his arm falls apart……(had to throw that in).

If he gets 600 PAs, he’ll make $4 mill total, salary and incentives. If he makes 500 PAs (but less than 500) he’ll make just over $3 mill, and so on.

And it is great to be a YELLOW Jacket tonight (BB lost to UGA…and FB losing to Iowa, thus far)!!!

You might need to rethink what competitive is, or be in line for a lot of disappointment.” DOB

Go Braves..

Patience….
