Anyway when I asked Wren if they might be keeping back $5-7 mill or so to spend later, he looked at me with raised eyebrows, then informed me that estimates he’s seen written about what they have left are innaccurate, that they are getting close to their projected payroll limit, and won’t be making any more big additions. – DOB
“wont be making any more big additions”??????

Who was our big addition Mr. Wren? Wagner or was it Glaus??? please, give us a break!!!!!!!!
It’s supposed to snow here in Chattanooga within the next few days, calling for 6 in. Anyway, it looks as if the team is almost set going into Spring Training. Biggest question will probably be — does Heyward win the RF jobf in April or in June?– LongtimeBravesFan
Agreed. Biggest things –literally and figuratively — to watch this spring should be Heyward’s progress and health/performance of Glaus and Wagner, along with the vision situations with McCann after his second Lasik, and McLouth after getting corrective lenses (contacts in his case) for the first time in his life.
Oh, and Schafer. Can’t forget Schafe.
And Freeman. Everybody’s going to be keeping an eye on Freeman.
Come to think of it, there’s going to be plenty to follow this spring. Get thee to Dark Star.
What I don’t get with the problem earlier is, Wayne said he was wrong and that he shouldn’t have even brought it up, but DOB responded to Wayne with his own point of view on the subject. Why is Wayne such an A-hole for bringing the subject up, but the person that makes the rules (and says that topic is off limits) won’t admit that maybe he shouldn’t have even bothered to respond to Wayne with his own point of view on the subject and that by responding he actually gave the subject more legs on the blog.
I take the blogmeister’s side on here most of the time because I think he does a fabulous job and has created (with the help of many great regulars) the best sports (and BBQ, music, etc.) blog on the internet. But I think this time he fueled an unacceptable (on here I mean) topic by responding with his own opinion and then accusing Wayne of being a crap starter for bringing it up.
The A Bomb………I will stand behind last year’s post of replacing Bobby Cox with Bobby Valentine. To be honest, I would love to see a manager come in and put some life in our offense. Last year, there were games where our offense basically took the night off. I dont care how many runs we scored in the second half last season.
Seeing our offense not show up and play with any life against the likes of Cincinnati and Washington was pathetic. Seeing Bobby say game after game “we hit them right at them” was nothing more than a cop out. To be honest, I would love to have seen how Bobby Valentine would have reacted to the crap that our offense displayed at times last year. That would have been worth what I paid to watch the Braves on Direct TV last year.
I appreciate what Bobby did for the Braves as manager in the past. However the operative word is “past”. This will be the 5th year in a row that we dont make the play-offs. Last year, I blame Bobby Cox for last year’s slow start. There is NO WAY that Bobby Valentine would have kept putting Francoeur and KJ in the line-up as long as Bobby Cox did.
Well, if Wren is only going after a “small piece” it sounds to me that the Braves are planning on Heyward starting the season in right field because I can’t believe that Wren really feels comfortable with Cabrerra starting evryday in RF with no other true power sources in the lineup except for Glaus. Yes, Chipper, McCann and McClouth can crank some bombs but they are exactly power hitters per se.
N8…..in response to your 3:33am posting, I can have it both ways.
In case your memory needs to be jogged……just last year, Philadelphia (a #6 seed) faced off against Arizona (#4 seed) in the NFC Championship game. Philly won 2 straight road games, only to lose to the Cardinals, in Arizona.
So yeah, it is possible for me to envision the Cowboys beating a hot Packers team in the NFC Championship game. Dallas is playing at a much higher level than the Cowboys team that faced the Packers earlier this year in Green Bay.
Interesting question – I like Aubrey Huff of the 3 as I think he’s got the best offensive upside. Defense looks rough (I”m looking at UZR), but mainly a pinch hit role anyway.
And by the way…I love the fact that politics are off limits here. Like jeffrey d said earlier, it’s not like you’re gonna change anyone’s mind. You’re just gonna get all hot and bothered and ruin everyone’s day.
ChopShop………Managers can lose the magic touch, just like players can lose it on the field.
My Dallas Cowboys are a perfect example. Tom Landry guided the Cowboys to 2 Super Bowl victories in the 70’s. However, by 1988, the Cowboys were a slow, old, bad 3-13 team. Jerry Jones did the right thing in giving Landry the heave-ho. Winning a Super Bowl in Jimmy Johnson’s 4th year and winning 3 in 4 years is living proof as to how right Jerry Jones was to fire Landry. There is NO WAY that the Cowboys could have rebuilt that team if Landry remained coach. Landry would have been just like Bobby Cox and kept Ed “way past his prime” Too Tall Jones and Randy White in the line-up. Landry would have never traded Hershel Walker to the Vikings for a boat load of draft picks (one of which we used to draft Emmitt Smith).
Managers get old and the game passes them by all the time. If the Braves had a different manager last year, chances are we dont struggle like we did in the first half. A new manager would probably not have kept Francoeur and KJ in there as long as Bobby did.
You boys got down last Sunday but Mark it down Philly will come correct this Saturday 21-10 Eagles, Watch…
And It seems that we both were right in that we knew that heading into the offseason the Owners were going to go cheap again just like they did last offseason…
yeah it’s a cool place…some people say there’s nothing to do, but there really is, ya just gotta look….got league teams in basically every sport i think…wings-baseball ‘merks-hockey rhinos-soccer, k’hawks/rattlers-lacrosse…the radiers football team hold on or did they fall victim?
David O’Brien………I must say that your 9:44am post left me speechless (in a good way, lol). You putting the hammer on “Wayne in Utah’s” lack of knowledge about global warming.
If I had said what you had said, he’d have vilified me and had a number of bloggers on here jumping on his soapbox.
Way to go with your courageous post. I honestly didnt think that you had it in you to be that direct with anyone (except me).
I think I’m going to try to make spring training this year. I’m still upset with myself for not making it to a single AFL game this year when we had Heyward, Freeman, and Minor there. I live in Arizona and they play only an hour and a half away from me…just couldn’t find the time.
I think we’ll compete because of our pitching and I certainly like the Glaus signing, but I am disappointed that the club decided to put the Vazquez money in their pocket. Lot of question marks (”If he’s healthy….if he’s ready…” Would have liked the club to sign one honest-to-goodness power bat that wasn’t asterisked.
I’m not one of those guys who gets all up in arms and withholds allegiance/money because they’re “not trying”, but I sure would have liked to see a real, professional power hitting leftfielder instead of Melky Cabrera. Any perceived value there is a direct result of the New York propaganda machine.
5 and a half weeks til pitchers and catchers report day
its not a hopeless offseason but it sure looks dim
looks like we are close to a contender, but no cigar yet
what a shame to get within a player or 2 away from being really good and quitting
cricket…….global warming will lead to eventual global freezing. Google it and do a little reading on how it will come to be. It’s happened in the past.
However what’s different this time is that it’s accelerating because of man pumping enormous amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere (for about 200 years when the Industrial Revolution began in England).
The world’s last Ice Age ended about 13 thousand years ago. It was only then when humans were able to travel to areas humans had never been……and eventually learn how to domesticate animals and grow food.
Before the last Ice Age ended, a 500 foot ice sheet covered half of America. How prosperous do you think America if everything above the Mason-Dixon line was uninhibited? Kind of hard to do anything when your land is covered by a 500 foot ice sheet.
As was portrayed in “The Day after Tomorrow”, we could eventually be the ones who become illegal immigrants that the Mexicans try to keep out of their borders.
Medicated Pete: I had that same thought after I first heard that Glaus was working out at Cust’s place in Jersey, and I thought the Braves were still going to sign another bat. But Cust has several teams interested in him, and won’t have to take a PH/backup job. Dude hit 84 homers the past three seasons.
say what you want, but they’ve cut payroll. They should quit the BS and just tell us that. DOB even said when they were trying to move Lowe that it was estimated that we were at $87m on a $92-95m budget.
We then moved Vasquez ($11.5m) and added Melky (3.5). I read DOB’s detailed list of how they are getting to $90mil, but it still doesnt add up. You add in all of Glaus’ and Saito’s incentives, signing bonuses, and buyout clauses and you’re still around $85 mil maybe $86. So if we are operating on even a $90m budget there is room to add a piece, but even at $90 its been cut.
Hey David long time no posting for me… I asked a question but I think it was right before you went to the press conference. What was the the facebook page? I looked up what you had said earlier and it didnt work. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and are having a Happy New Year so far…
are the Braves already planning on buying out McLouth at the end of the year? DOB you mentioned that Wren is figuring that into the payroll for this year. If McLouth stays healthy and plays like everyone expects him to, I don’t know if I would buy him out
Japanese pitchers traditionally struggle in their first year in the major leagues, sans Nomo. Dice-K struggled, too. When KK got settled down though, I though he looked pretty darn good to be a #5 starter in the rotation.
Dogsbrekky: You should. Memphis is a cool town. Sun Records. Stax Records. Johnny Cash is from just down the road. Al Green. Aretha. Rufus Thomas. Jerry Lawler. And of course, on top of all else, The King lived there and is buried there, man. You gotta recognize….
Bryan, whether or not they end up buying out McLouth in 2012 is a total non-issue right now. If the guy plays like crazy the next two years, or is just really good and they don’t have another CF like Schafer to take over, they can simply pick up McLouth’s contract for 2012. Non-issue.
The option is for more than $10 mill, so if he has a couple of seasons like last year or only slightly better, what would you do? On second thought, don’t answer that. Because it’s a freakin’ non-issue on Jan. 5, 2010. For their own in-office accounting, they’re apparently building in a third of the buyout amount now in the event they do buy him out. If they don’t end up buying him out, so what? It’s $400,000. Again, this is not a publicly held company, and they don’t have to show their books or justify their accounting methods to us. You know what I mean?
I think Glaus is the steal/deal of the offseason. And I think, regardless of the money situation, that we are in good shape heading to Disney. Rotation is top shelf and the main thing to remember, we get full seasons from Prado, McLouth, McCann and his eyes, Glaus, Diaz/Melky and hopefully Heyward. Compare that to last year’s KJ, Schafer, McCann’s glasses, Kotchman, Garrett, and Francoeur.
I think it is an upgrade at each position, even in RF with a rookie.
I thought they would have added one more bat. I really don’t see that much improvement in the lineup from last year unless Glaus is hitting 35 plus HRs and Heyward plays well.
It sucks if they are really cutting back on payroll.
Lew………..the oil companies have been rumored for years to have been gobbling up patents that could help wean America off our oil dependence……because they want to keep making billions every year selling oil.
Also, what product, if used properly is guaranteed to cause health problems? Tobacco. Alcohol, if not abused, does not cause health problems in the average American. Neither does marijuana. However tobacco is addicting because of how the cigarette companies manipulate the nicotine in tobacco. Yet because of the profits involved, selling tobacco is legal.
personally, i think the braves front office is blowing smoke up everybody’s arse. no way around it, this is a big payroll cut and nothing frank wren, bobby cox, or any other braves fo members say can justify the money, or lack thereof. what next? the hotdog vendors at turner field’s hourly wages factor in on the braves payroll? i honestly dont understand why someone doesnt admit that the payroll has been cut this year. it doesnt make sense. i’ve never once seen the braves factor in performance bonuses in their payroll, especially to the point of all bonuses coming to be (even those which are surely not….takashi saito) factored in the final budget. just admint that liberty media is cutting payroll. frustrating!

explain to me why they cant sign him if the price is right… sure he wants playing time…. but melky isnt gaurenteed pt nor is hayward im sure there is a way he would get his field time as well as his ab’s as long as his price is right. and if the days keep going by why wouldnt picking him up for cheep and a limited contract he could be perfect as the outfielder we are all looking for.
as long as you sign him what is the difference? not like the rest of the league doesnt lie to the players they sign! i still think hes perfect… lies are business!

Any perceived value there is a direct result of the New York propaganda machine.

cricket…….global warming will lead to eventual global freezing.
As was portrayed in “The Day after Tomorrow”, we could eventually be the ones who become illegal immigrants that the Mexicans try to keep out of their borders.

say what you want, but they’ve cut payroll.
