“That’s where your problem lies. Why do we need to close the gap on the Phillies in the standings? How many times did the wild card team trounce us in the divisional round the last couple times we made the post season? Or in 97 when the Marlins couldn’t catch us in the standings but they could beat us head to head and did so in the NLCS?
We went 10-8 against the Phillies last year. You think they would have wanted to play us come October had we got there?”
Considering that the Phillies finished the season beating us 7 out of the last 10 times, I’m going to say they wouldn’t cared too much.
And sorry but going into a season shooting for the WC is BS in my view. And besides, with the Rockies, improved Mets, Marlins, Cubs, Brewers, Giants/Dodgers, it’s going to be just as tough to secure a WC spot.
Also, I don’t see how the Braves continuously joking in the playoffs have to do with anything.
I just hope the Vazquez deal works out with this prospect.
Just get the sense that no one took a deep breath before pulling the trigger.
There are still a LOT of players out there in this economy. I think the powers-that-be could have reconvened in their secret headquarters for an afternoon, gone over some serious strategy based on there not being a market for Derek Lowe.
Vazquez was a HUGE chip. Gave the Yankees a chance not to have to worry about their ‘pen as much as they did before.
We got a good deal. Would’ve like to have seen it be a great deal. Even as part of a larger package.
let me add that it was especially encouraging to see the braves trade their best starter from last season to free up salary so they could be happy with the lineup as it is. real encouraging.
Hey I do to. Best part of the deal? It prevents Wren from giving Vazquez an extension this offseason which would be a mistake before we see how he does this year.
One final thought on this 2010 Braves team. If healthy we have no glaring weaknesses which is more than Mets, Marlins, and Nationals can say. Our offense will be more consistent and the pitching will be awesome as usual. I know we’re a team of IFs, but if these IFs go our way we’ll be a competitor for the division and a serious competitor for the WC. I think I’m done reading all these complaints so I’m out friendos.
But I get on here and voice my opinion… and everybody’s like ‘hey, you’re an idiot’. So, it’s just funny b/c most of you feel the same way I do. I just posted what I felt…. isn’t that what blogging’s all about?
Right now, education of the market and trading is priority number 1. I know what you mean about it being “fun”….I meant interesting in that I am fascinated by it and the possibilities that it gives you. Yeah, you have just as much right as anybody (except for maybe some extreme right wingers…..just a joke folks) to blog.
I said it the other day… I’m characteristically always optimistic about the moves the Braves make. I think Wren has done a good job as a hole, but to come out and say they have no money left to make a move to bring in more offense is not jiving… when we have poured over the money and the figures and the contracts over and over again from many different angles and still come up with 85-90MM which leaves enough for another bat, right???? Well, DOB has shared about pro-rated portions and the like, but I just feel that’s all a little shady… Anyway, opinion voiced… I’ll leave you guys to your blog. Sorry for bothering anyone…. oh, and sorry N8 for telling you to shut up.
“Kelly Johnson did not perform and was released. Wren way overpaid for Lowe (4yr $60M) then complains that his hands are tied by big contract money. Why is he not under the same standards and get canned for his bad performance.”
Um… Because Kelly was owed nothing and Lowe is owed $45M more dollars. Plus the fact that Lowe won 15 games on a down year. Come on man compare apples to apples not apples to stupid.
Why is he not under the same standards and get canned for his bad performance
Because he improved the team by 14 wins, built one of the Majors’ best starting rotations, and is building a strong foundation for the future of the team.
But no, he got milked in the Vazquez trade (people were saying the same thing a year ago), paid too much for a needed reliable starter, and regularly runs over dogs on his way to the ballpark.
I would have to respectfully disagree. I see an incredible difference in motive and goals. Though I have stated that I am not a member of either party at this time. I am not a R or a D, but a staunch C. (trying to keep from getting anybody on here riled up)

How is that shady? “Shady” is saying Wren is taking $10 million from payroll and making miscellaneous purchases. You have to take into account incentives, clauses, raises from 2009, etc.
1) PAYROLL WAS CUT. I was saying that from the minute Glaus was signed. Many of you were saying “$5 million left.” “$7 million left.” “$9 million left.” We could have signed Glaus BEFORE trading Vazquez. You don’t clear $11.5 million to take on around $6 million. And as the attendance keeper criticizing crowds of 15K during a pennant race, ladies and gentlemen, there are your results for being a “regional team” in a city of five million. Oh, and by the way, even though I’m a critic of Atlanta fans for not coming out, I will be attending 3 games with my son in June for his high school graduation present. That’s right, 3,000-mile flight. I’m not regional.
2) COX WAS KEPT CEREMONIALLY TO SELL TICKETS (I GUESS). Guy deserves it, but if you’re going to go for it, GO FOR IT! We’re now saying at age 69 that this guy has to do the managing job of his life to somehow overtake the two-time NL defending champions. Good luck. Just don’t replace him with Lentz’s suggestion, the finest manager in the Eastern Hemisphere, Bobby Valentine.

You went off on a teabagging comment instead of addressing the entire subject of the post I directed at you. I’m not surprised, it’s a tactic used by your kind over and over again.
I said the political comments that you repeatedly make are bound to draw a response from some who disagree with your political views. My point was that virtually everyone has political views but that most don’t share those views here per the directive of no political discussion. You seem over and over to feel the need to spew your political opinions on this blog even though most people here don’t want to hear them. When you do that you are going to draw a response from someone like myself who just gets tired of listening to blow hards like yourself. If you hollar socialism, I’m gonna hollar teabagger! You’re like old Fido. You can dish it out but you can’t take it! It’s not Waynes fault! The management is against him because they sympathize with the other side! Geez Wayne, grow up and quit whining and being a victim! If you keep your mouth shut about political issues and quit with your little digs about the left, then this debate never even takes place.
The point isn’t that you and I could not be further apart politically, its that if YOU insist on blowing hard about all the crap you blow hard about, someone is going to blow back!
So lets make it simple and summarize:
It’s not about your political views.
It’s not about my political views.
It’s about not feeling compelled to use this forum as a vehicle to explain to the readers that you’re not happy with leadership of our country. Because when you do that, someone who disagrees with you is going to say “enough” and respond with an opposing viewpoint.
This shouldn’t offend anyone on here when i say this… ALL politicians are liars. They just love to string along stupid Americans along their journey’s of lies and deception.
I’m thinking we end up signing an IF/PH close to ST to get a big discount. Hey, these are the Atlanta Braves and when we say bargain hunters, DAMMIT, we mean it!
This stinks. Anyway you add it up, it looks like they’re trimming payroll by $5MM or so. Unless Heyward puts up ROY type numbers, the OF just isn’t going to be enough to get it done offensively. While I do think McLouth will certainly improve on his ‘09 numbers, Melky Cabrera is a 4th OF. And Diaz, well he’s great against lefties…
It’s a run-heavy offense that gives the QB the “option” to either run the ball himself or pitch it to the running back. Coach Paul Johnson instituted that at Tech last year and it’s done wonders for them.
Damn, I just put our 2010 roster together on MLB The Show and even the video games version of this team is boring. Oh well, I’ll switch over to the Yankees or Cardinals team and fill out their roster and have a blast with those teams. I’ll pitch the K machine Vazquez.
Braves Lifer (stupid) You missed the point, the point is as a GM he made a bad move in signing Lowe for that amount of money. Wren even admits that was a bad move and tried to move Lowe even offering to pay part of his salary. This was Bad Performance by the GM it has ,jacked up future Brave move by tying up salary. The point is not comparing Johnson’s salary to Lowe’s. It’s about Performance. Use your head.
DOB – Did Bobby get cold during the press conference and ask to borrow your leather jacket? I hope that’s what happened. — Jeffrey D
A few of you really seem averse to leather jackets. What, your dads were mean and wore them or something? Jeffrey D, what do you wear around, a cool jacket with “Hollister” or “Gap” across the front? Maybe a cool Braves parka?
Our problems begin and end with TERRY MCGUIRK-CEO. He is the one that has lied all along about what a great deal hooking with Liberty media was. That LM was going to “supply whatever was needed to put a world championship calibre team on the field. “That “we really did not have a solid payroll number but it would not go below $80 million..And that if there was a player or 2 needed and Bobby and Frank want him, then we will provide what was needed. Meanwhile he received a huge bonus and salary increase…no matter what happened…If you read the transcripts at the time the deal was consummated, it really was bonafide bunch of lies. LM wanted us for nothing but a tax writeoff and then McGuirk pushed the Commissioner into thinking this was a wise deal despite the fact LM is NOT a local entity and being local was supposed to be a main criteria.. Quite disturbing how they fooled us all… I have no doubt they cut payroll and do not want to tell us at the beginning of the season because tix sales will plummet even further…
By the way, for those thinking the Braves are holding back some funds for possible midseason needs, I asked Frank precisely that question after the press conference. Because in my head, I’ve had the approximate $7-8 mill figure as available remaining funds (hadn’t accounted for few things like fairly easily attainable incentives and McLouth’s buyout, etc, stuff they figure into their payroll, as noted a few hours ago).
Anyway when I asked Wren if they might be keeping back $5-7 mill or so to spend later, he looked at me with raised eyebrows, then informed me that estimates he’s seen written about what they have left are innaccurate, that they are getting close to their projected payroll limit, and won’t be making any more big additions.
Rumor Has It (why won’t you use your real screen name, my blogging friend)
Actually, if you could read, you would understand that I did answer your questions. I get it. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have posted my little conversation with my friend, for fear that somebody would get their wittle bitty feelings hurt.
So, I say that if some folks on here didn’t get their panties in a wad when I agree with beekay on the Climate Change subject, then this never happens either. Others do their little left wing jabs. I respond, and it ends. BUT, when I do the same, all hell breaks loose, and then DOB throws gas on it by coming after me in a statement that made him look like one of Obama’s Climate guys. To be honest, it was kinda dying off until that happened.
You lefties gotta always have the last word in things. (of course that was a retort to your continuing to use the offensive term “teabagging”).
I better stop before I say something else that gets everybody all ticked off.
So, you can keep it up if you want, or you can let it die. Or you can just try to get in the last word. Heck, I don’t really care anymore. Like I said earlier, if my viewpoint was given the same latitude as yours, we would never be here. OR, if your viewpoint met with the same consternation as mine, I wouldn’t push this issue.
Problem is, it is so acceptable to bash the right, that nobody notices, except for us conservatives. You don’t even realize it happens. I don’t think DOB does either. He’s been damned silent when I have asked him that question.
What the heck, I should no better than to try to explain to “Rumor Has It” who won’t reveal his/her true identity.
I dream of the day that the Braves no longer have an albatross on their payroll. I hate to compare Lowe to Hampton, but the salaries do match up, at least for the last few years ATL was on the hook for all of Hampton’s.
Did anyone else find the Fiesta Bowl coverage last night extremely annoying? It seemed like they went to a shot of the crowd after every play and fans were screaming “we’re number one” each time. That was extremely annoying. And did anyone else see the cheesy Tostistos shot of the camera man eating out of the Tostitos bag?
Actually Dave, you are the one who doesn’t get it. I do this once in a while, because you let all the other shyt slide. You won’t admit it for some reason, pride, ignorance, I don’t know or don’t care….
But you sure showed which “side” you are on today. (I am not the only one who has stated that fact either, so it ain’t just me, I’m just the voice.)
No one compares to Hampton. Lowe won 15 games last year and at the very least, gave us some innings.
And less we forget, Kawakami in my opinion had the gutsiest performances of the year by ANY Braves pitchers. I was there the night he beat Kershaw with that 125-pitch performance getting out of a bases loaded jam. Who else did he beat? Santana? Lincecum? Halladay? Now that sucks!
It could be a lot worse considering many of you and your neighbors don’t go to the park. No revenue? No payroll.
nvm, found it…and Wayne in Utah, that subject should have been dropped hours ago…that s exactly why there’s no politics on the DOB blog….man like a bunch of five year olds arguing over a kickball in here….
Agreed Andy K, simple rule. We all have beliefs but DOB has a rule and he has it for a reason. Most of us are adults here, shouldn’t be that hard to follow.
Well, it sounds as if DOB and Mark Bowman are getting the same info – Wren is almost done except for one more minor signing, probably a pinch-hitter/ back-up 1B/OF. Or maybe another back-up middle infielder. Anyway, it looks as if the team is almost set going into Spring Training. Biggest question will probably be — does Heyward win the RF jobf in April or in June?
I appreciate you accepting some of the blame here Dave, but at the end of the day you were either clearly mislead or you vastly overstated your understanding of the Braves’ payroll intentions.
Regardless of how they calculate it, the payroll is going to be substantially lower this year than it was last year. Whether you prorate signing bonuses or not and whether you use average annual value or single season obligations for salary, doesn’t make an impact on the comparisons across years. There weren’t any new signing bonuses given this year (Chipper had a $4 million signing bonus on his last contract) and there aren’t any players making less than their average annual value this year. As it stands right now they should be somewhere between 84 million (no incentives) and 90 million (max incentives including dave ross and omar infante), significantly lower than the ~96 million of last year.
Back to more pressing matters… I see our lineup this way:
1. McLouth, CF
2. Prado, 2B
3. Jones, 3B
4. Glaus, 1B
5. McCann, C
6. Escobar, SS
7. Diaz, LF (Heyward hits here when Melky is in the lineup)
8. Heyward, RF (Melky hits here when he’s in the lineup)
9. Pitcher

And Diaz, well he’s great against lefties…

what is a spread option offense
It’s a run-heavy offense that gives the QB the “option” to either run the ball himself or pitch it to the running back. Coach Paul Johnson instituted that at Tech last year and it’s done wonders for them.

Folks — this is what you get when you don’t go to the park.
If the Braves drew 3 million last year and Liberty did this, FINE: Complain.
When you draw 15K during the week like the Pittsburgh Pirates (who are never in a pennant race), be happy with the roster.
Hopefully by October we’ll be really optimistic because of the young kids.

No revenue? No payroll.

1. McLouth, CF
2. Prado, 2B
3. Jones, 3B
4. Glaus, 1B
5. McCann, C
6. Escobar, SS
7. Diaz, LF (Heyward hits here when Melky is in the lineup)
8. Heyward, RF (Melky hits here when he’s in the lineup)
9. Pitcher
