I don’t know why you got so riled. All I said is that loyalty worked for me, perhaps, because I’m from a different generation. I retired in 2000. Was the corporate world the same then as it was in 1970? No. Would I have been as loyal in today’s marketplace? That depends on the company for which I worked. I was loyal because I was rewarded with loyalty (and enough cash to retire at 55). When the FO stands up for you, even when they think you’re making a mistake, that’s loyalty. I made mistakes (like everyone), but I wasn’t thrown out on my rear end either. I was never threatened with the possibility of having my job shipped overseas or management hoping to replace me with a cheaper option, so I can understand what you’re concerned about. I performed well above average for about 30 years and rewarded my company’s loyalty with loyalty.
The point that I was trying to make is that loyalty doesn’t seem to be a part of anyone’s portfolio anymore, from the CEO to the factory worker. Perhaps that’s the difference between ethics and morality. Ethics dictate doing what is best to INCREASE the bottom line. Morality is doing what’s best for the good of the company, employees included, even if the bottom line remains stagnant for a while. Today’s generation adopts the ethics of pursuing what is most lucrative, not, necessarily, what’s right. That’s what is so sad.
Braveheart – I just looked it up and George Allen blamed his poor helth on a gatoradebath he got from his players at Long Beach state. It was cold out and he was out on the filedfor a while after it. He was in his 70’s. Bad combination.

lame dude, I don’t have a wife. I dumped her cause she just wouldn’t leave me alone. Half a dozen times a day for years and years and years. I’m not afraid to admit it, when I turned 63 it just got a bit too much for me.
Fourbee,
Not riled at all, just expressing my take on the decline of loyalty. It is not, as you asserted, a generational trait. It is a result of the direction that business priorities have gone. To say it is generational is to imply that it is age related, which it isn’t. It is a reactionary phenomenon. At the end of the day we are all independent contractors because the average term of employment is no longer measured in decades, but in years.
Uga, I agree. Tebow is an all time great. Love watching the guy play. His style of play from the QB position is my favorite to watch. I Gonna miss him when he’s gone. Big void to replace. You need those figures that are compelling to watch, root for and against.

And is somebody up in here seriously acting like Tebow’s not really a virgin? What? Get right on out of here…you can’t compare him to Tiger or Josh Hamilton or any of those mere mortals. No but really….he’s a virgin. Trust me on that one.
Oh and did John Brantley take a single snap tonight? I understand that they were afraid that only leading by 30 points late in the 4th qtr it would have been risky but come on.
a muslim QB talked about allah as much as tebow talks about god, he would be publicly pilloried as a trouble maker and an anti-american punk. so it’s not faith these people admire, it’s faith in their particular shared belief. another name for that is prejudice.
No Jed, I think it’s all about how a person handles himself. I think Tebow’s actions speak for themselves and let’s you know what kind of person he is. I think if a person of any relegion gave thanks and conducted himself in a rightous manner, I don’t think anybody would have a problem with that. It’s evident that The Lord has truely made a difference in Tebow’s life.
During the postgame, Tebow said he wanted to “Thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without Him, we wouldn’t be here.” Forgive me for nitpicking and if I’m getting this terribly wrong, but If you believe in such things, God is the reason we exist here on Earth. Jesus is the reason our souls can exist in Heaven. We existed here on Earth before Jesus. Only God and the angels existed in heaven before Jesus, not our souls. So unless for some reason Tebow is mistaking The Superdome for Heaven, I don’t get what he is saying.
if someone presumed to speak for my belief system, and, in the process, he depicted my lord as being concerned with a football game, i’d consider it blasphemy. but hey, that’s just me, i guess.
It was a solid opening to the new year for Delta airlines, continuing the fine record of service I enjoyed with the Atlanta-based outfit in 2009. In short, we were forced to check all bags in Vancouver today, which we expected as a result of the Christmas Day attempted bombing.
Anyway, we showed up at the Vancouver airport more than four hours before our flight, after getting up at 4:30 a.m. in Whistler for our bus ride to Vancouver.
And after being told we would have to check every bag, including computer bags, a small carry-on bag and regular luggage, we did so and carried only our computers onboard, sans cases. No worries, right? (Ha.)
So after flying through Salt Lake City — a Delta hub, by the way — and arriving in Atlanta at about 11 p.m. tonight, guess how many of the five checked items belonging to me and the woman I was with actually made it to Atlanta? Did someone guess all five? Really?
Let me remind you, we’re talking about Delta, which somehow managed to lose my bag on two different direct flights during baseball season, one flight to Philly and one to Chicago.
OK, so you wanna guess again? Four bags, maybe? Three?
No, folks. The correct answer is two. Two out of five. The other three bags? They ended up in Minneapolis, where they’re presumably spending the night, hopefully not in a snow bank beside the runway.
Oh, well, two out of five — that’s hitting .400, right Delta? Good job.
Way to add your special touch to our vacation, and again meet the standards I’ve come to expect. Oh, and we’re also glad you slapped those “Priority” medallion tags on the bags, too. Otherwise, we might have gotten only one of our bags, instead of two.
It pays to be a frequent flyer with Delta, let me tell ya.
Not feeling creative enough right now to do a post from DOB’s luggage….don’t think Dave is in the mood for it anyway. But…welcome home, DOB. Happy New Year!
oh and…you know what they say….what you do on new year’s day will continue throughout the year…so … good luck with that.
Flying is rediculous anyways. One of my family members was going on and on about how they charge your ass for this and that amount of luggage. Basically keep finding ways to rip you off. I’d rather drive anyways if you can.
I have never sewed anybody in my life….I don’t feel like a true American!
Dave, I flew extensively from summer of 2001 until late 2005, was a Gold member….and I only had two flights where I had issues with my bags. Flew 3 weeks out of each month. I am now looking for a piece of wood to knock on now.
When a person accidentally commits a foe paw, it would be a crime shame not to have some fun with it, don’t ya think. Otherwise, someone might say your and idiot or whop you up beside your head with a hose pipe!
I heard an Alabama man earlier making excuses for the Tide getting their azzez whupped last year in the bowl game. Funny how when it is your team that gets an azz whuppin’, it was because they didn’t care about the game……
BTW, Saban is one of those guys you just love to hate….though I try not to hate on anybody, even the blog azz hole Dense. So, I dislike Saban about as much as I dislike Jerry Jones. Here’s hoping the Tide can’t get up for the game this year and allows the Longhorns to win!
And WW, that Boise State OK game a few years back was about the most exciting finishes I have ever seen. Ranks up there with the Dodgers vs A’s WS game where Kirk Gibson hit “the homer” and with the Stanford/Cal band on the field finish. I guess the “Hail Mary” game was a good finish too.
DOB will have to forgive his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for not making sure his bags are here. Jesus was too busy making sure Tim Tebow was in the Sugar Bowl.
Hey, I can’t really rag on Tebow for having strong religious convictions. I respect that from a guy. And if a Muslim did the same thing, I would say Amen to that brother too.
(couldn’t resist givin it to ya a bit on last years bowl game!)
Tebow is special, there is no doubt about that. And I do believe that he is every bit the person he says he is….its not him I have a problem with (and “problem” is a relative term here) … its the media fixation on him. Enough already. He is mentioned at least once (more like dozens of times) in every college football broadcast televised in the South, does not even matter if he’s not playing in said game. Often times instead of calling the game the guys in the booth are discussing how wonderful Tim Tebow is….during say…an LSU vs Tennessee game! Touchdown Tigers!? Oh hey…you know what that reminds me of? That time Tim Tebow went to Cambodia and did those circumcisions. Isn’t he the greatest football player of all time? And then each analyst chimes in with their Tebow anecdote…and then Tebow’s Promise is played..yeah…you know the one? From the 2008 season? Its still relevant in 2010. And then a special video montage of the life and times of Timmy is shown instead of the important game winning drive. Don’t think I’m exaggerating either. Just over and over and over …every Saturday …every game….for 3 years….from August thru January….hater? No…but allow me to be tired of hearing it, if you will.
Guess what, Tebow is not the greatest player ever. He is the biggest media darling ever. Urban Meyer leaves him in every game passing the shotgun while up by 30 with 2 minutes to play.
That was an interesting thread on “loyalty” a few pages back. And, yes, there are many different ways to see that relationship between employers and employees. I think my employees are pretty “loyal”, LOL, mainly because we treat them extremely well in terms of salary, benefits, respect, etc. But, that’s not altruistic…it’s just good business. Talented folks are hard enough to come by, and training is a much, much higher cost than retaining. I don’t know that you could accuse me of “loyalty”, though, LOL.
But, ball players, computer geeks, brick layers, whatever, as employees, denote a certain amount of currency to happiness and stability, beyond the dollars in their contracts. Just depends on whether that number is high or low. Would Chipper have signed several club-friendly contracts if the Braves had been a perennial second-division club instead of a perennial playoff contender? Doubt it. His ambition probably would have outweighed his “loyalty”.
Make the assumption that Heyward will be all that is hoped, and the best way to retain his services long-term is to surround him with quality players. Make being in the playoffs a reasonable goal each year, dazzle him with an early contract containing lots of zeroes, and find a way to elevate the amount he allows for the happiness quotient.
Great point about the media’s love affair with Tebow. They have a similar crush on Coach K. They’re special, to be sure, but you get tired of hearing their praises sung to the exclusion of others. It’s as if no one else in the country has a clue about playing college football.

I will say though that a Cabrera/Diaz platoon could work out just fine and both these guys produce career years while Glaus bounces back to his ‘08 self, Chipper can find himself at the plate and with the glove again and McCann and Escobar continue to get better. Damn, that’s a lot of hope though, ain’t it?
I’ll also take issue with jed, who claimed Meyer has his priorities straight. His entire reversal about his retirement shows that to be a lie. And his claim that he voluntarily checked himself into the hospital when in fact his wife called 911 after he passed out.
If he really put his family first, he would have stepped down, at least for awhile, and not pulled a 180 hours after making that initial announcement.
Meyer’s a terrific coach, but he’s a control freak who can’t imagine anyone else in charge of “his” program. He’s a meltdown waiting to happen.
DOB, you gotta start mailing your stuff ahead of you. Sounds like you’ll have some better luck that way. I remember when they somehow mangaed to send my stuff to San francisco when I was on a flight to NY. Haven’t let them send out the bags without triple checking the tags since.
Great point about the media’s love affair with Tebow. They have a similar crush on Coach K. They’re special, to be sure, but you get tired of hearing their praises sung to the exclusion of others. It’s as if no one else in the country has a clue about playing college football.
That’s why it’s better to keep your religious proclivities under your hat. Unless, like jed suggested last night, you’re lookin’ for notoriety and trouble.
SOUTHWEST has nothing against your bags. Unfortunately, they do against RICHMOND as regular patrons have to drive to NORFOLK or WASHINGTON to hop a S.W. flight.
I have always felt that if I cant bring a bottle of water from home through security then its quite a racket the airports have going to charge me 2.00 for a bottle of Dasani. If I owned a movie theater chain I would install security scanners at all the entrances. I would claim it was to secure safety for all…and I wouldnt allow liquids just like the airports. That way I could cut down on the soda smugglers and charge everyone 5.00 for the big gulps.
Until reading DOB’s last post, I didnt realze carry-on was no longer allowed. I get the reason for this…but can they really still charge for checked baggage when they dont allow any baggage on the plane? I guess they can. DOB, did you at least get your “checked baggage” fee back?
Braves question: When I look at the remaining free agent OF’ers available, to my mind the best offensive options are all (or considered to be best suited as) AL DH’ers: Vladimir Guerrero, Jermaine Dye, Damon and Pat Burrell. Even if you disagree that those are the best offensive options remaining I am curious…could any of these options play a serviceable LF? I am most interested in Vlady’s ability…I think he can still hit (when healthy) and wonder if he could do a decent job in left.
Tebow and Gators – Footy, last time I checked, is a TEAM sport… yet this year I assume the Gators played with only Tebow…. do they name any other players in the media
then again who cares about a 5th rated team… kind of like going on and on about some QB from an over-rated NFL team (like Mark Sanchez and the JETS)
Looking at the free agent picture, now and in the future, I think the Braves are trying to position themselves to make a run at Carl Crawford. He will be a free agent next year and might be available at the trade deadline this year.
I just wish they would try to trade for Brandon Phillips now, while the Reds might be still thinking of shedding payroll. Wouldn’t it be exciting having the speed and excitement of Carl Crawford and Brandon Phillips. Both are good defensively and Phillips has shown good power.
LF Crawford
2B Phillips
3B Jones
1B Glaus
C McCann
SS Escobar
CF McLouth/Shafer/Cabrera
RF Heyward/Diaz
Dobi and others – on our flight from JFK to NOLA on the 23rd there WAS SO MUCH CARRY ON baggage on our Jet Blue flight that it was coming out into the aisles etc… Jet Blue didnt seem to have anyone at the gate checking much of anything except the boarding pass (no they didnt ask for ID) so I think the Delta crap about NO carry-ons from Canada is apalling
I never fly delta anymore… 2 years ago in Vegas they left us on the tarmac in 112 degree heat for an hour and then admitted they had overloaded the plane,…. myself and 10 others volunteered (I insisted) to get off said jet…. I came home US Air a few days later
Bravesmandan: I agree with both your ideas. Who would you give up to get Phillips? As far as Crawford I would wait until free agency s we would not have to give up a ton of prospects and then he goes elsewhere.
I’m basing the comments about Meyer and “his’ program on an interview he gave last week. After announcing his retirement he said he was meeting with one of his assistants and said there was a certain way they conducted practices and ran the program and he could not imagine having someone come in and doing it another way. That’s why he said he would only take a “leave of absence” which will put him back on the sidelines before fall practice opens. How much you want to be he’ll be on the recruiting trail by February?
Never had a problem flying with Jet Blue. Even on that Valentine’s Day fiasco several years ago, it wasn’t Jet Blue causing the problems, it was the freaking NY aiprorts-the most dysfunctional in the country. They even have runway problems in the summer when it rains.
Unfortunately, Jet Blue does not fly out of Atlanta.
Bravemandan-Why would we go after Brandon Phillips? Are we trading Prado?
Take a look at a comparison of their numbers (granted there is a larger sample size with BP)-theese are 162 game averages.
Phillips- .265BA, .307OBP, 21HR, 84RBI with an OPS of .742
Prad-.307BA, .360 OBP, 14HR, 93RBI and an OPS of .810.
Phillips is hardly a great defensive player, having posted error totals of 11 and 16 in two of his seasons, a career Fldg% of .985, with seasons as low as .970 and .973. While Prado is no great defensive player in his own right, neither is Brandon.
And let us not fail to mention that Brandon’s power numbers were put up in Cincinnati, a hitter’s park while Prado put his up in a park (that we were told yesterday, is, at best, neutral)
Why go looking for the proverbial Bird In The Bush when we already have a better bird at second? The grass ain’t always greener (or supply your own cliche).
-
DOB — Sorry bout your Delta experiences. I just got done reading part 1 of the Chipper interview, that’s great stuff. I did notice one mistake, though:
Jones hit only .264 with 18 homers and 71 RBIs — all career-worst marks for the six-time All-Star.
.264 actually isn’t his career-worst mark. In 2004 he hit .248.

Wayne,
Tebow is special, there is no doubt about that.

I’m basing the comments about Meyer and “his’ program on an interview he gave last week. After announcing his retirement he said he was meeting with one of his assistants and said there was a certain way they conducted practices and ran the program and he could not imagine having someone come in and doing it another way. That’s why he said he would only take a “leave of absence” which will put him back on the sidelines before fall practice opens. How much you want to be he’ll be on the recruiting trail by February?
