I see that the braves signed a replacement for Kelly Johnson, a lifetime 225 utility player with no power, now they need to look around for a .100 professional pinch hitter to replace Norton, I’m sure they will find one.

Ralph,

When teams make signings, it doesn’t mean they’ll be on the big league roster. They have to fill the replacements of departed AAA Braves too. Relax, when the Braves sign Kelly Johnson’s replacement, which is a bench player might I add, you’ll know.

6 hours? That’s it? Get to work son. Cool that you still find the time to be on here from time to time, and the profession you’re pursuing. We need more of that.

The tri was good. Finished in 2 hrs 41 min flat. Did the swim in exactly my goal time (30 min), and ranked 22nd on the run out of 800 people. The middle part did me in (the biking). It was supposed to be flat, but due to a shaky California budget, they moved the course. I didn’t train much on inclines, so I struggled with the continuous rolling hills. Still averaged almost 18mph on the bike, but wanted 20. It was a cool experience for a good cause, and overall I was happy with my time, but more with my endurance which I excelled at when I was younger. Should do more…but haven’t been training!! Don’t think I’ve seen his name mentioned, but how ’bout Hank Blalock at 1st? He’s been hurt for the past couple of years, but he’s still pretty young, 29(had to look it up), and has a lot of talent when healthy. I would think he would come pretty cheap. If you could get a corner outfielder who is capable of playing 1st, and maybe a platoon/part-time player that can play 1st, that would seem to be a pretty good risk to take. He bats left, and we have too much of that already, and I’m not sure about his career splits, but he has a lot of pop and we sure need that.

18 inches on the ground here, maybe 4 feet in front of the driveway after the plows came through a bit ago & covered up what took me hours to uncover.

Good to see some of the usual fine folks who post around here. I’ve been tring to keep up on the happenings with the Braves & the blog, but I have little time to post these days. Damn job keeps getting in the way.

I’m guessing we are either going to be really disappointed in this off season or elated. I don’t think there is any middle ground this winter. I just can’t get too excited about the likes of Nady & Damon. Even if the Braves end up signing LaRoche he is what he is & probably will produce little in the first half of the season.

I’m guessing Wren would like to go big with a trade in regards to offensive upgrades, but there is a lot of obstacles in the way right now. I’d love, like any other Braves fan, to trade for Adrian Gonzalez, but the asking price will be huge. They have a good 1B prospect from what I have read so Freeman wouldn’t be on their list. I’d say they would want Hanson or JJ plus someone like Kimbrel or Teheran. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m sure the value they would want in return for AG would be similar.

This team needs that masher in the middle of the order to really make a push. We probably will see Heyward this April, but don’t expect for him to carry the team quite yet. If Wren can add that bonafide clean up hitter then the addition of Nady, Damon or LaRoche would get me a bit excited because at that point any of the them would be rounding out a solid offensive team, instead of being relied upon to do things none are capable of doing.

Even if Chipper is back to normal he’s going to miss 25-30 games & McCann will miss quite a few games because of his position. That’s too much offense out of the line up when they are regarded as the two best hitters on the team. If Wren can pull a trade for a true clean up hitter this team would be in good shape for the playoffs IMO.

KC………….I pretty much agree with your 8:10pm posting. However, if the Braves were to negotiate an extension like the Phillies did with Halladay before the trade was finalized……then I would be more than ok with giving up prospects like Freeman and Medlen to acquire Adrian Gonzalez.

If the Braves could acquire Gonzalez, then they could theoretically afford to offer Matt Holliday a contract in the $17-$18 mil range. Gonzalez is slated to earn $4.5 mil in 2010.

Just imagine this line-up………

1. Nate McLouth
2. Martin Prado
3. Chipper Jones
4. Matt Holliday
5. Adrian Gonzalez
6. Brian McCann
7. Yunel Escobar
8. Matt Diaz/Jason Heyward
9. Pitcher

Now that would be a potent line-up. This is based on the Braves being able to trade Lowe….AND……..ownership willing to bump payroll into the $100 mil range.

Sure, some may view increasing payroll to the $100 mil range as a risk. However, if the Braves were to acquire both Holliday and Gonzalez………dont you think that there would be a spike in both season ticket and single game tickets?

I know, this posting is a pipe dream. It is highly unlikely that the Braves would make the above bold moves. However, that does not mean that they shouldnt do it.

Here is a breakdown of a potential 2010 payroll with the addition of Holliday and Gonzales:

1. Nate McLouth…….$5.0 mil
2. Martin Prado………$0.5 mil
3. Chipper Jones…..$13.0 mil
4. Matt Holliday……..$18.0 mil
5. Adrian Gonzalez…$4.75 mil
6. Brian McCann……$5.67 mil
7. Yunel Escobar……$0.5 mil
8. Jason Heyward…..$0.40 mil

Totals for starting line-up…….$47.82 mil

9. Tim Hudson…………$9.0 mil
10. Javier Vazquez……$11.5 mil
11. Jair Jurrjens…………$0.6 mil
12. Tommy Hanson……$0.45 mil
13. Kenshin Kawakami $7.33 mil

Starting pitching totals…….$28.88 mil

14. Billy Wagner………$6.75 mil
15. Takashi Saito……..$3.2 mil
17. Peter Moylan……..$1.2 mil (approximate arbitration #)
18. Kris Medlen………..$0.45 mil
19. Eric O’Flaherty……$0.5 mil
20. Jesse Chavez……..$0.45 mil
21. Boone Logan……..$0.8 mil (approximate arbitration #)

Total for bullpen………..$13.8 mil

22. David Ross………..$1.6 mil
23. Matt Diaz……………$2.55 mil
24. Omar Infante………$1.85 mil
25. Joe Thurston………$0.6 mil

Total for bench players……..$6.6 mil.

Total for Paul’s 25 man roster: $97.10 mil.

Include eating $5 mil per year of Lowe’s contract: $102.1 mil

If the payroll was projected to be $95 mil this year…….my question is this: Wouldnt spending the extra $7 mil to acquire Holliday and Gonzalez result in enough of an increase in ticket sales, concessions, and parking to cover the $7 mil increase?

Why do you suppose the Padres would trade their franchise player, who is signed at a club friendly deal, for Freddie Freeman and Kris Medlen? Do you think San Diego would alienate their fan base that much? Not to mention the impact it would have on ticket sales.

Why Does A Dallas Win Help The Eagles?
It has been widely reported that an Eagles win over the 49ers on Sunday would be enough to clinch a playoff spot. That is incorrect. We learned earlier this week from the NFL that the Eagles would need to win and have one of two things happen – either a loss or tie by the Giants OR a WIN or tie by the Cowboys.

How exactly does a Dallas win over the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night help the Eagles? Here’s the explanation we got from the NFL.

If the Eagles win, the only thing that can prevent the Eagles from making the playoffs is if the Giants win the NFC East. The only way the Giants can win the NFC East is a three-way tie at 10-6. The tiebreaker that would come into play is common games. That eliminates the Eagles and leaves the Giants and the Cowboys to vie for the division, which goes to the Giants who swept the Cowboys in the regular season. The Eagles would have been swept by the Cowboys and therefore lose out on the Wild Card spot.

If the Cowboys beat the Saints on Saturday and all three teams finish 10-6, the tiebreaker becomes division record. The Eagles and the Giants would have a better NFC East record than the Cowboys and the Eagles own the head-to-head record over the Giants.

Again, not that any Eagles fan is going to root for the Cowboys, but there’s the explanation of how a Dallas win helps the Eagles.

P.S. You better watch using those cuss words, your mom may come into your room and wash your mouth out with soap.

I like it. Make it happen.

Oh, there goes our friends for life bid. I was startin to like ya too.

Nothing personal Jurrjens. I’m just being crazy tonight – hey, no comments from youse udder guys in the peanut gallary about my permanent status.

I was just wondering what machinations PL thinks COULD be pulled off to make it happen. DAVE keeps beating my about the head and shoulders about the payroll limits with the BRAVES. I, on the other hand, dare to dream , and HOLLIDAY and GONZALEZ would be great.

Actually, this is my first contact with the dreaded PL. Is my standing on this blog permanently impaired from here on because I agree the payroll has to rise above 100 million for our club to truely have a chance to achieve greatness again? Because I have for the three years I’ve posted here, and I will continue to do so.

actually the guy that the Padres “could” put at 1st is not a natural first baseman. If anything, Paul Lentz

How do you figure that he is not a natural first baseman when he played his entire minor-league career there? Blanks will go to first.Sometimes you amaze me.

Yeah, MARTIN’s MARKETS just won’t be the same. Haven’t seen the UKROP brothers socially since the 1960’s when we ALL were young. Looks like they did well for themselves.

considering that you scored 550 on your SAT’s…….you have no right to talk about someone’s reading comprehension skills.

What if they scored 550 in critical reading?
