CS I highly doubt we sign another OF. Would you rather play Schafer or play Heyward and not let him get a little more experience and possibly ruin him? Not to mention you would get him another year and cheaper when he is in his prime and not a 20 year old kid. I would rather give him two months.

Eric From MO….my point exactly. Now look at it closely. Where exactly have we improved to where you can say we are WS caliber. Lateral moves with hope does not equate to improved results. Agreed Heyward will help us in RF or should but that was going to happen without these recent happenings.
Nobody can tell me Glaus is an improvement over LaRoche. Not even in the same discussion defensively and until he proves otherwise I will give the offense as a wash. Advantage–LaRoche. Hudson same thing. Until he proves otherwise he is a downgrade vs. Vazquez. Cabrera is nothing more than an interchangeable part in the OF. OK but not better than what we have. Agreed Vizcaino is a great addition but that is probably 2012 away.
So I ask anyone, please tell me how we are better today than we were at the end of 2009. Unless Wren takes the extra 9 mil saved to date and puts it toward another acquisition how are we better?

Rock On you obviously didnt understand me. We were WS caliber last year at the end of the season. However our team sucked to much in the beginning creating us a hole we couldnt quite climb out of. If we had that team that finished the year start the year, then we might have won it.
Glaus is just as good as half season of Kotchman and half season of LaRoche, Hudson is just as good if not better than Vazquez. Vazquez has had one good year in his career. Can you guarantee he will repeat that. Melky is better than Church and defiently better than Francouer. Plus in June Heyward will be up. The pen will be more consistent. This team is WS caliber.

Steve….I am not saying we have bad SP now or no chance to compete but when you trade your #1 pitcher by most accounts and your main rival just traded for the best pitcher in baseball I am not real giddy. Not to mention retrofitting a hitter coming off surgery to replace a solid 1st baseman. Again, I await the next moves.

if there was a scenario right now where schafer and heyward were both brought up at the same time I think it’s more likely that heyward outperforms schafer. I think we sign an everyday LF. diaz and cabrera are both 4th OF. Cabrera could even be traded (cubs, marlins), I doubt it. I think schafer is more next year. Just a thought up you know, to each is own.

Rock On… I hear you. I’m not giddy either. It is what it is. I would’ve loved to have kept Javy. But unfortunately, he had to be the one to go. I too await the next moves, but I think our club is a bit stronger than last year, poised to get much stronger with the arrival of Heyward in the near future.

I will give you Glaus/Hudson and I will take LaRoche/Vazquez. Wren had that and chose to trade away or not sign them. We now have two players coming off injury to replace two solid players. I will give you that Hudson MAY come back strong but in no way is Hudson equal or better than Vazquez. This is simply Wren gambling and it may pay off. Right now for the sake of this discussion we are not better off and are not as strong as the end of 2009. Not yet.

How nice would it be to have Glaus coming off the bench to fill in one of the corner infield spots…We have the prospects and players to trade for Adrian Gonz. (Melky and Prospects) then go out and sign Nady/Derosa/Dye to a one year deal to play Left or Right. That would be a solid line-up.

Rock on, I’m a big fan of Tim Hudson but that aside, he’s got a brand new elbow, improved mechanics on the mound and is a proven “Ace”. His career .655 winning percentage is awesome, not to mention Hudson’s career record of 148-78. Dude is money. Besides, he’s from my home town. I gotta root for Huddy.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like Zaza? Everyone seems to love him for his heart, hustle, and that little scuffle with KG a couple years ago, but the truth is that he sucks. He can’t dribble, can’t shoot, can’t cover. He’s horrible.

Coach….I like Hudson too-as a #4-5 starter but not to replace a Vazquez. Maybe he comes back in a bionic mode but I like what I saw in Vazquez over what I pray to get in Hudson.

As a 4/5? You’re really selling him short, man. He won’t match what Vazquez did last year, but he’ll do very well, and we’ll benefit because Lowe will rebound and we’ll have a full season of Hanson as well, instead of giving 2 months’ worth of starts to JoJo and whoever else.

I know a lot of other bloggers have commented on this and are thinking the same thing, but dang, that sure sounds like it could be related to Uggla!:) I would rather have him try to play LF than 2nd base – not only did Prado hit better than KJ, he was also an upgrade defensively. Dan would not be an upgrade defensively. But that bat …. And compared to the apparent LF ….
Flipping the recently acquired Yankee and others (always depending on the “others”) for Uggla – I really like that idea.

As I wrote earlier in the day, I think Wren is doing what he can to make the Braves competitive in 2010 without straining the budget, but his eye is on 2011 when the younger players graduate to the big league.
Look, from this vantage point, it’s hard to say that Wren improved the club for 2010. Glaus an upgrade over LaRoche – we’ll see. Hudson over Vazquez – maybe. Wagner and Saito out-perform Soriano and Gonzo – possibly. If the old guys and walking wounded rebound (that would include Chipper), then Wren’s going to have a contender and look pretty shrewd. If not, wait until 2011.

Why do people call for a new blog all the time? I don’t get it. Do you think there is gonna be some huge news that he was saving just for the article? The dude posts on a regular basis in every blog anyway. Except for maybe a couple of extra stats and tidbits, the article is just gonna tell us the same stuff he’s been saying WITHIN the last blog.
We are damn lucky to have a guy like DOB doing these blogs all the time. And yet we get these people who act like spoiled children just wanting “more, more, more!” Give it a rest already…..

and you know that how KC. other than the word of a corporation and it’s loyal employees, whose actions do not support their words. exactly what circumstances forced them to settle for Anderson @ 2.5 mil when much better was available for a couple mil more? and that’s not the only example. I think you are allowing your homer attitude to bias your reasoning .If you have some real proof I’m willing to listen, but to quote wren etc is not proof. and to believe anything from such a captive source is naive IMO.

Steve….of course Hudson is a 4-5 guy in this rotation but without Javy he moves up a slot. Good to have someone of his ilk that deep in the order. Not saying he couldn’t be higher in a different situation though. He was fair to decent in his rehab starts nothing more. I am not ready to annoint him with higher status just yet.

Marc D……..I know that we are probably not going to go after Matt Holliday. However, I explained why they should in earlier postings.
I try to make it very clear when I am saying that the Braves WILL or WILL NOT do something…….as opposed to when I say that I’m HOPING that the Braves will or will not do something (even if I know that they probably do the opposite).

I am not in favor of the Braves spending $8 or $9 mil a year on Mark DeRosa( he is sure to want a multi-year deal)……..or signing Xavier Nady to anything other than a 1 year contract.
I would rather see the Braves save that money for a possible trade deadline deal in July…or use the money to acquire a big bat via free agency after the 2010 season.
Since it is a “foregone” conclusion that the Braves arent going after Matt Holliday (according to many of you)……why not have Matt Diaz play left, McLouth in center, and Jason Heyward in right….with Melky Cabrera as our super outfield sub/late inning defensive replacement/pinch hitter? I dont see anyone out there worth spending that kind of cash on .
Since the Braves got Glaus on the cheap, why not make a run at Matt Holliday? I really feel that Matt Holliday would bring some real energy to our line-up and make Braves fans more willing to come to the ballpark and spend some cash, thereby increasing revenue.

Robert (Chipper Is The Best)…………Your 7:53pm posting has merit and it is very possible that the Braves outfield could play out that way.
However, if Schafer and Heyward both come up in late May or June…….I dont see Schafer playing in left when he platoons with Diaz. I see Schafer playing center and McLouth playing left field. Schafer has more speed and a way stronger arm than McLouth. When Diaz is in the line-up, then obviously he will be in left field while McLouth is in center.

Yes Prado is cheaper, but has only started half a year. he’s not a defensive whiz and is slow. Phillips is fast, good defensively, has power is still young and affordable for the next couple years. I hope Prado continues to improve and wasn’t a half year sensation. I would prefer Phillips, he’s a proven player with lots of abilities that a playoff caliber team needs.

Adam LaRoche should have already been signed by the Braves. The Braves were too quick to get rid of Soriano. Now they are too cheap to give LaRoche his asking price. LaRoche will win the MVP award in the NL this season if we decide to get rid of him.
