abwright, Mistake number one is assuming they’d have to trade LaRoche. Don’t make assumptions regarding players who have never played in the big leagues i.e. Freeman,
the braves are never going to win diddly until they jettison cox, waive old man larry, get a corner outfielders who can actually hit 30 homeruns!!!
gonzalez can be had for 6 million a year and they sign a guy coming off tommy johnson surgery for 7 million???? judas smoltz could close for a third of that probabamly.
Opinion………..you can forget about Smoltz signing with the Braves for $2 mil to pitch in ANY capacity for the Braves.
Also, the Braves arent going to trade both Lowe and Kawakami. Trading Lowe is going to be hard enough as it is. Trading Kawakami and getting proper value in return for him will be even more difficult.
To be fair to Liberty Media, they have actually increased payroll from 82 mil when they took over to 96 mil now for this year. Even though I would prefer Ted Turner or Arthur Blank
Paul Lentz I say the braves are going to give away Lowe – a trade at this point is nothing but a euphemism. To trade one needs to get something of value in return. I guess a rich team eating his salary counts. But, I call it a give away.
To be fair to Liberty Media, they have actually increased payroll from 82 mil when they took over to 96 mil now for this year
And I don’t know the exact ranking, but the Braves have been in the upper half of payroll. And in the lower half of attendance. People calling Liberty “cheap” need to think that through.
Then again, I guess reason has never been a cornerstone of the ol’ blog.
Everyone needs to remember back in 2006 a lot of people were screaming to get LaRoche out of Atlanta me included. If we could sign him to a one year deal the fine. But do not forget the LaRoche that we knew before this last year, lots of strike outs, lots of swings and misses, lots of disappointments in clutch time.
jeffrey d Have you ever heard of something called inflation? “Each year, the payroll changed for every team as did the winning percentage. However, to properly analyze the value of the payroll, rather than specific dollar amount, adjustments to the payroll amount had to be made. A payroll of $50 million in 1995 has significantly more value than a payroll of $50 million in 2007 due to economic inflation. In order to account for this decrease in the value of the currency, adjustments were made to reflect the monetary value of the payrolls rather than simply dollar amounts.” http://www.stat.uiowa.edu/~kcowles/s30…/hawbakerMLBWinning.doc
A payroll of $50 million in 1995 has significantly more value than a payroll of $50 million in 2007 due to economic inflation
Yes, thank you Copernicus. The Braves were ranked 12th in payroll in the majors in 2009 (no inflation neecessary for 2009). Considering our poor attendance, I’d say 12th and $95 million is pretty good.
jeffrey d — Don’t get me started on attendance again. For the 15,000 outfield drinkers the Braves get per game they’re lucky to have the payroll dollars they get.
That’s why it’s important to get some players who put butts in seats. Not guys coming out of a M*A*S*H unit like Nady and Glaus.
Here’s a question to anybody who knows – I know Liberty is responsible for payroll, but what else do they pay for? Managers (I assume)? Front office? Minor league rosters/management?
It could be worse nay sayers on Liberty Media, they could be just killing the franchise in value by not keeping the payroll at 12th in MLB and do a (Pittsburgh Pirate Management Technique). Even though we know they wont do this do to them selling the team in 2011
Is it just me or is anyone else a little bummed we’re actually looking at DeRosa? Here’s a guy who could barely crack the lineup with this team five years ago and now he’s the answer in the outfield?
Speaking about the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Wikipedia says, “They are the only Braves affiliate without the name “Braves”, as well as the only Braves affiliate not owned by their Major League Baseball counterpart.”
Opinion- Just because your name is opinion does that mean that you have to have one about everything? If you feel the answer to this is yes; please try to make your opinions more insightful. Right now it appears that all of your “opinions” are being made by a kid who licks windows on the short bus.
Why you don’t sign LaRoche now: Because he is asking more then anyone wants to pay, lets see where it stands in January/Feb. Its not just the Braves that don’t want to pay him $10million.
Trading Vasquez: Will not get as much as Braves fans think. Remember he is in his last year and teams don’t like to give up prospects or major league guys that are good for one year, they would get less then Seattle gave for Cliff Lee.
That’s in response to Tech fans posting the 45-42 score everywhere last year. They beat UGA twice in a decade and all of a sudden you’d think they owned the world. It is getting annoying, but those Techies were getting waaaay too cocky.
Also a Vasquez trade for prospects would be counter productive…..due to the fact that we gave up 4 pretty good prospects for a pitcher with a 4+ ERA from the White Sox……unless were getting 4 Jason Heywards in return it would be a bad deal
Love the offseason. Good GM’s work behind the scenes until a team is done, so fans complain their team isn’t doing anything, is cheap and will be losers but then the team makes their moves and is competitive.

Joe..yes Seattle gave some decent prospects but not their top prospects and many scouts say they like them but don’t love them. Point is nothing to help the phillies this year and Seattle kept their best prospects. People in Seattle think trader Jack is a genius for keeping their top prospects and getting a cy young guy for at least one year. Javier Vasquez is good but not a cy young so the return would be less.
Don’t get me started on attendance again. For the 15,000 outfield drinkers the Braves get per game they’re lucky to have the payroll dollars they get. -The A Bomb
Braves ranked 15th in attendance last year. Can’t get more middle of the pact than that. Especially considering they haven’t made the playoffs since 2005. Braves are basically pulling what mediocre teams usually pull. Besides attendance isn’t directly linked to payroll and how much you can spend. If it is I have to imagine Cardinal fans have quite a few questions about why there payroll isn’t larger. They have good attendance numbers all the time. They’ve been 4th in the league in attendance for 4 straight years behind only the large market teams like the Mets, Yanks, and Dodgers.
So the braves are in the middle attendance wise but in the top 11 for payroll. I can’t believe people complain about their payroll when they are right up there with most teams.
Who and what is trailer trash referring to? Avatar? Please! Dude, get a life and chill out. Unless you’re getting paid by the AJC or Liberty Media your insistence to keep the topic strictly on the Braves 100% of the time is a tad obsessive
Javy is definitely Cy Young like, at least this past season. He’s been one of the most consistent pitchers in the last several years. Almost guaranteed to get 200+ innings and 200+ strikeouts. You might not get top prospects, but you would get a decent return. Philly was looking to replenish their farm by giving away two of their top prospects in Michael Taylor and Kyle Drabek.
Joerochester…I love Javy and agree he was cy young like all the way. Just think it would be less then Cliff Lee and today teams are less likely to give tons of value for one year guys. But obviously a few teams like the Angels really need some pitching and would. Next years FA pitchers should look good with Cliff Lee, Vasquez and others if they don’t sign extensions before hand.
David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweets that Johnny Damon has some interest in signing with the Braves. The outfielder would have to be willing to take a pay cut to join the club, in O’Brien’s opinion.
Perhaps Wren does act hastily; but, I’d like to give him the off-season before I get over-anxious about how the re-shaping of the bullpen has developed.
Wren did have a pretty successful off-season last year, despite the fact that things might have gone much worse had he been successful in some of his early pursuits (namely Furcal and Burnett).
Also, remember the blog blow-up when the Braves gave up Tyler Flowers in a deal for Vazquez?
Right now, Vazquez might potentially yield us a Flowers-caliber prospect + more; or, he may go out and win a Cy Young award in a Braves uniform.
Wren is not above criticism; but, it’s also still December 18th.

Noah,
You’re right about most likely getting less for Javy than Lee. I just think Javy is one of the most underrated pitchers in the league.

The Braves will be looking to trade for a guy like LaRoche again by August.

An example of the times is Miguel Tejada who hit .313 last year with nearly .800 ops may have to change positions to get a job according to Foxsports
