Trading Lowe + 9 mil for Swisher let me break down what it would do this offseason.
12 mil off the books
-6 mil for Swisher
Braves add 6 mil in payroll flexibility this offseason and a Power Bat.
The following season Swisher will make 9 mil 12 million is already gone that would have been owed to Lowe, So were still positve 3 million, And also the Braves could trade Swisher after 1 season as well.
Bradley was traded for one of the WORST contracts in all of baseball. Carlos Silva is coming off an injury last season (he was 1-3 with a 8.60 ERA before his injury), a season after he was 4-15 with a 6.46 ERA . Doesn’t that tell you something of Bradley, that the trade partner the Cubs found was for one of the ABSOLUTE WORST contracts in all of baseball. Of course Seattle had to throw some cash in, at least Bradley is playable…I’ve said all along that Bradley is an AVERAGE baseball player. Silva is a black hole on any pitching staff. And yes, Lowe is a better pitcher than Silva…. WORLDS BETTER and only $2.5 million more a year.
And there is NO way I would rather have Bradley (2/$23 million)straight up for Lowe than Lowe+$9 million for Swisher (2/$15 million). You can argue all you want on that point, but I’d be willing to bet the vast majority would agree with me on those two choices.
tr……….also, the Cubs came out $7 mil ahead on the Bradley-Silva trade. Not bad considering they were facing having to eat Bradley’s whole contract if they werent able to trade him.
David O’Brien……….Dude, I never said that the Braves wanted Milton Bradley. Nor did I ever say that the Braves would realistically make that trade. I am WELL AWARE of the fact that the Braves shy away from “certain types of players”.
However, what I did say was that I felt that the Braves SHOULD take a chance and gamble on Bobby Cox being able to harness Milton Bradley’s ability.
Now would I proposed such a trade under normal circumstances? Of course not. However, given the fact that the Braves are desperately trying to dump Lowe’s contract…….I felt that the risk was worth the reward when it came to dumping Lowe for Milton Bradley.
Now, again I ask: HOW HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND!
Perhaps I need to post what definition Webster’s has on the words “should” and “would”.
Also, back even farther on Silva than just the last two seasons…In 2007, he was 13-14 with a 4.19 ERA. In 2006, he was 11-15 with a 5.94 ERA on a Minnesota team that was 30 games above .500. So that’s ONE decent season (2007, at least he won 13 games that year with an ERA you can live with in the AL) out of the last four for a guy making $25 million the next two seasons combined.
VaBraveFan………..if the Braves were to dump Lowe for Swisher…they would basically be saying that they are ok with not seriously competing for a division title this year.
Trading Swisher would pretty much limit the Braves to acquiring a Xavier Nady type player with what is left over from the savings that dumping Lowe onto the Yankees would bring. Swisher and Nady will not significantly improve the Braves offense.
Dave, if I had to guess, knowing the Braves luck, they will be unable to trade Lowe, and will have to end up resorting to trading Vazquez, and they will also not be able to re sign Lacroche, and have to find a stopgap until Freeman is ready.
The only chance the Braves really have for Lowe would be if the Yankees with their gadzillion dollar payroll would want to take on that contract for whatever reason. Otherwise, I’ll bet that a team is going to grab Vazquez, whose much younger, and has a contract for only one year, at $4 mil a year less than Lowe makes.
As for Laroche, I’d love to see him re signed, but I dont know. I dont see the Braves giving him three years at nine or more million a year, if Freddie Freeman is ready for 2011. Chances are, Laroche will end up signing with someone else, and the Braves will get a stopgap for a year or two before promoting Freeman.
Hopefully, this will all be resolved in the next couple of weeks.
Macon Braves (RIP)………while Silva has a 2 year $25 mil contract……the Cubs are only responsible for $16 mil of it.
Sure, Silva is not worth the $8 mil a year that the Cubs will be paying him. However, again………considering that the Cubs were facing having to eat Bradley’s $23 mil contract without any possibility of getting any return the next 2 years………at least they have a “shot” at getting something from Silva……at a $7 mil discount.
Swisher and Nady will not significantly improve the Braves offense.
First of all, the offense in the second half of last season wasn’t bad…actually, it was one of the best in the NL. If you add Nady and Swisher to McCann, Chipper, McLouth, Prado, and Escobar, that’s a pretty strong group of seven there. We here at the Paul Lentz Fan Club are terribly disappointed to see David O’Brien trying to squelch the voice of our leader, Paul Lentz. As Mr. Lentz has stated on numerous occasions, if you attack him, he will attack back twice as hard. That’s just the nature of Lentz. His ancestor’s sword may been replaced by a keyboard, but Lentz remains a warrior at heart. I am not just cautioning DOB, I am warning you all: Paul Lentz’s wrath will soon shake your windows and rattle your walls!
I think if you added Nady and Swisher to the lineup it would definitely add some offense. Enough to at least get a wild card, especially if they are healthy. They each are easily capable of 20-25 hr per year–Glaus, too, would add some nice offense.
Paul Lentz rather the Braves trade Lowe and eat 15 mil of his contract and then somehow sign Matt Holliday for 7 years at 18 mil a year. which makes no sense????
Adding Swisher and Nady will for sure improve this team with out putting a future finacial crutch on the teams future,
Macon Braves (RIP)…….the lack of a big power bat in this line-up needs to be addressed. Particularly the lack of right handed power. Signing Swisher and Nady would not come close to addressing this.
No Lentz…I don’t understand now. Jeez Louizzzz, Bradley being traded for Silva was the equivilant of the Cubs releasing him. Actually it’s even worse for them because they have a black hole on their pitching staff now. Maybe if you stopped IGNORING Silva ineptness you might “Understand now”. If Bradley had ANY trade value, they could have at least gotten a guy that wasn’t 29-47 the last four seasons with an ERA OVER 6.00.
Yankees want a 4th starter more than they want to replace Swisher. I don’t see them trading for Lowe and letting go of Swisher, unless they are lurking on the Matt Holiday sweeps, but then their payroll would grow and you hear their BS of wanting to clear payroll and GET YOUNGER, Lowe ain’t younger, well, maybe a whisker younger than DOB.
Paul, while I understand your analysis. Would you really consider a Holliday a power bat at Turner Field? He spent years at Coors Field. Last year he didn’t do too great. I’d take Swisher and Nady.

The Sox don’t want him, and he seems to be okay after surgery in March, so he can play one season for us at 1B until Freeman is ready. 3mil would be not too bad and cheaper than many other players, and also better. No?
I am not sure what is so funny. Perhaps your “HAHAHA!” was an exclamation of support for the job we do here at the PLFC? I will take it that way. If you are interested in joining our burgeoning movement, please send inquiry email to President@PLFC.com
VaBraveFan…………I feel that potentially paying Holliday $18 mil a year and eating $5 mil of Lowe’s contract the next 3 years would do more to help the Braves line-up…….than spreading the $23 mil on Swisher, Nady and Glaus. Swisher is a journeyman……Nady and Glaus are injury prone players.
Signing Holliday would allow the Braves to have Jason Heyward start the season as our Opening Day right fielder (for the league minimum). Having Holliday bat 4th would give Chipper some serious protection. It would also ensure that our clean-up hitter would be in there most of the time (unlike last year when Brian McCann had to take days off because of the demands of the catching position). Having Holliday in the line-up would ease the pressure and attention on Heyward, who could bat 7th without being expected to be the savior of our offense.
When you look at it in those terms, the Braves would be getting Matt Holliday and Jason Heyward for $23.5 mil……..instead of getting Swisher, Nady and Glaus (as some of you on here have said that you would like to see happen).
Macon Braves (RIP)……….I think that you’ll find that Silva will probably have better success pitching in the National League than he had in the American League. By all accounts, Silva is healthy now and has been pitching well in workouts this off season.
Regardless, the Cubs saved $7 mil in the process. And the possibility remains that Silva could have some success in the NL. Some chance is better than no chance (which is what would happened if the Cubs had to eat Bradley’s $23 mil).
joerochester………..do you consider a .313 batting average, 24 homers and 109 RBIs to be “not too great”. You have to remember that he played on a pretty bad Oakland A’s team that had little offense……and a home park that is more pitching friendly than Turner Field.
Having Holliday bat behind Chipper and in front of McCann would make for a potentially potent middle of the order.
Thank you, sir, for your 6:39 post. Some would wonder why the Braves would risk bringing up Heyward if he’s not ready; some would point out that Glaus and Nady stand a better chance than Holliday and Heyward of producing the most runs. They are wrong! They are fearful cowards and morons! Lentz has seen the future and it is MURDER!
Mike in VA………true, but if they go after Swisher, Nady, and Glaus…the Braves will probably have Heyward start off the season in Triple A.
If the Braves were to have Heyward be our Opening Day right fielder…..then the pressure on him will be much more intensified….then it would if Matt Holliday was in our line-up. That is a lot of pressure to put on a 20 year old with only a handful of at-bats at Triple A.
I rather have 2 20 homer guys than 1 30 homer guy as well. Why spend all the money on one guy when we can make the lineup more balanced. And without giving up huge money for years to come as well.
Can you imagine trading Lowe to dump his salary, substituting Bay at 15 mil a year then signing Nady and Derosa. That would be pretty amazing. Can I hear a hell ya?
I don’t think that anyone was suggesting the Braves aquire Swisher, Nady, AND Glaus. If they aquired two of them, there would still be room for Heyward IF he shows in Spring Training that he is ready. That is still a pretty big IF for a 20 year old kid.
I think he is as special as the next guy, I’m just not going to assume (I certainly HOPE, just not assume) a 20 year old is ready until he shows it with a job on the line like he’ll have a chance, for the first time, this Spring.
Guess it will depend on their confidence level in Heyward. Some people thrive on pressure. Regardless, we still have Schaffer and Diaz in the outfield mix too.
I would love Holliday, don’t get me wrong, but I would take two players that hit 25 hr over one player that hits 30 for the same price.
No, because those two players take up twice the roster space as the one player. With the one player and whoever you get to fill the other roster space, you’re likely to get more production and more value overall.
joerochester……….I do not see either Swisher or Nady hitting 25 homers each playing a full year in Atlanta. You have to remember that Swisher hit a number of his homers playing in the bandbox of a stadium called Yankee Stadium.
Also, I have doubts as to what kind of player Xavier Nady will come back as from his injury.
The Braves need a big bat. I can only imagine what kind of pitches Chipper would get to see if he had Holliday hitting behind him. I feel that in addition to acquiring Holliday for $18 mil a season, we’d also be getting better numbers for Chipper. Also, it would allow the Braves to move McCann to the 5th hole, Escobar to the 6th, and so forth…..thereby strengthening each of those spots.
There is NO way I would tie up $18 million a year for the next 5-6 years in Matt Holliday (or just about anyone for that matter, with only a few exceptions).
He says “I said ’should’ not would” when it doesn’t happen or he wants an out.
Then he says, “I’m right!” when he feels what should have happened, happened.
Can’t have it both ways.
It’s guys like this that make me not want to post here. This group is far too hostile for my taste. Why would I want to post anything if I know that I’m going to get attacked by Lentz or someone else? DOB doesn’t do his job. If you ask me the forum should be policed to some degree. Not just give into mass anarchy.
This forum should be about friendly ideas. It should be about friends getting together and having a beer and talking about their favorite team. It should not be about attacks. Lentz has it all wrong. He actually thinks this is a war where there are ZERO stakes.
Everyone should have an equal say and it’s clear that it is not true. It’s only the loudest voices that get their ideas through. Notice how much time you guys spend debating Lentz’ ideas? Is this right or wrong?
The only reason I come on here occasionally is to catch tidbits of news. I skim over 90% of the baloney. Frankly, it would be nice if this was a nice bulletin board where ideas can be separated. But I can’t do anything about this ridiculous free-for-all. I would just love to put a lot of you on “ignore”.
Steve from OH……..Wow, I am in total agreement with your 6:58pm posting. That is slightly more shocking than my Cowboys upsetting the Saints last night.
FEAR: Lentz will string you up by your feet and hoist you to the ceiling, whereupon you will dangle at his mercy. His followers, naked, will have gathered beneath your swaying terrified body. Lentz will then place the pointed edge of his sword against your neck, count to 3, and spill the contents of your jugular below, soaking us in the regenerative waters of his conquest.
But do you consider Holliday a big bat? I would take Bay as a big bat more than Holliday. But Holliday is a better overall player by far, and that comes with a price. Give me two guys that will hit even 20 HR for the price of Holliday.
VaBraveFan………….if Nick Swisher is all that, then why would the Yankees consider trading him? After all, wouldnt that make him a bargain at 2 years $15 mil? Why would the Yankees dump him in exchange for a 37 year old coming off an off year who is owed $45 mil over the next 3 years?
joerochester………Holliday not only can hit, but he has speed and can play better left field. Plus, Holliday has the charisma to spark an offense. Bay is a pretty quiet guy.
Ironically, that is one of the reason’s why I suggested that the Braves take a chance and trade for Milton Bradley. Our offense could use some spark and fire. At times last year, there were games where our offense looked devoid of life. I feel that Holliday would be a better fit than Jason Bay.
True, but we don’t have many options realistically. The 1B is bleak. Would I take Holliday? In a heartbeat. But that won’t happen. So realistically we can settle for two guys with 20 HR potential.
Did i say anything about him being all that???? I see him as a better alternative compared to Nady.
Yankees for 2 years now have had Swisher in trade talks. We almost landed Swisher last offseason but that convo ended when the Yankees wernt willing to eat any of Swishers contract what so ever.
Also after Swisher awful post season performance, they wouldnt miss him to much.
VBF: Again, I do not see the “funny” here. If you are interested in a brochure, or membership information in the Paul Lentz Fan Club, please email me at President@PLFC.com
yeah but there is a huge difference with swisher on the yankees they are stacked and he will get more pitches to hit with them..swisher is a good hitter in an all star lineup,he wont be that productive with the braves
Lentz–what part of “don’t address me, I don’t want to converse with you” don’t you understand? You’re an A-hole. I don’t want any part of any conversation with you.
The only reason I come on here occasionally is to catch tidbits of news.
and to post long rants against ranters too I see
s’ok I often feel the same. almost this entire page involves Lentz in one way or another, including this post
“How about Mike Lowell”– OUCH, that hurt because not only is Mike Lowell up there in age and is steadily declining on his defense & is becoming more & more of a health issue, but because it seems like it’s something our Braves would go for. Cheap guy that can hold the fort a year. Say it ain’t so Frank. Go after Nady & I’m betting it’ll be a signing he won’t come to regret.
I’d Take Mike Lowell for Lowe if…… they take all 45 million of Lowe’s contract and pay 10 million of Lowells 12 mil contract…. lol
Lowell’s defense went from near top notch to very very bad last year and with his health issues he is likely done. He can still be productive but there are to many negatives. Yet i still rather have him over Milton Bradley lol.
Many of us ignore Mr. Lentz. I don’t read his posts, nor many of the posts by others that reference what he has to say (both negative and positive comments regarding his statements). I doubt I’m alone in my Lentzian-mouse-scrolling habits.
As to your comments regarding the ‘edginess’ of the blog, personally, I think its a good thing, and a lot of quality debate comes out of the back forth that goes on (granted, with a thick layer of BS posts from the usual suspects – including myself).
That’s how the interwebs work. Often the loudest (i.e. drunk or teenager) dominates the debate. Its not always the case, and even when it is – its not hard to ignore the BS and read the good posts. Frankly, the offseason tone of the blog is far more tolerable to me than when the regular season actually starts (at least during the games), so I have few complaints about the blog right now!
Once the season starts, however, the blog becomes so negative and the damn name hoppers, who use other people’s handles, come out of the woodwork (gotta love lonely teenagers who have nothing better to do since they’re not getting laid). The AJC techies need to install a sign-in option for the blog to deter fake posters, but they said they would forever ago and nothing has changed so far. I’m guessing its a difficult process, but I dunno much about programming, online content maintenance, etc.
Cherokee–I’m just responding to what I read: two guys who hit 25, or one who hits 30 for the same price. Gimme the one who hits 30. He’s doing better than the two guys together anyway.
holy crap paul lentz is human after all, yeah it will come down to the last game probably,we still have the broncos though next week, dawkins return to philly, that was a big win for the cowboys they needed that for sure
“In regards to your 3:33 pmCB………..Hey, I’m cool with laying off the personal attacks……..IF others will do the same.”
I have a lot of lost time to make up.
“But come on, when someone posts that Kelly Johnson has trade value or that the Braves will tender him………or that the Braves can get prospects for Derek Lowe and his whole contract………it is hard for me to not attack the posting.”
Maybe you should focus on not attacking but rather discussing why you don’t believe that to be accurate, much less over riding the blog with 10 repetitive post harping on the same things.
“I have no problem with someone putting me on the spot and challenging me to defend my posting. However, there are many people who take it personally when you challenge them to defend their postings. They seem to feel that they have every right to post their position on something…..while expecting no one to disagree with them.”
Not sure where you come up with this. Most people do not like to be called a moron, idiot, or some other disrespectful name and that’s what they take personal. You also get personal when someone doesnt agree with your position as evidnece I point you toward your response to my rather blunt yet accurate dressing down on why a Medlin and Freeman would not be enough for Gonzalez. (Please dont explain why you think it can work, youve already posted about it 5 times)
“It simply does not work that way. If you don’t want yourself susceptible to criticism……don’t post. There is no such thing as a right to challenge-free posting.”
Most would just like some common courtesy and respect, but you do not give any. All you can focus on is how stupid someone is and what a morons he/she are. Further, you can not seem to take what you dish out as evidence late last night. You seem to get really offended when someone starts using the same tactics you yourself use.
I would be willing to bet you can go one week with out calling someone a name or being disrespectful.
I’m just responding to what I read: two guys who hit 25, or one who hits 30 for the same price. Gimme the one who hits 30. He’s doing better than the two guys together anyway. Steve
In general I agree with you, but they do have two positions to fill and two players to fill those positions might feel like more to most fans especially since it would probably not involve a long 5 to 7 year contract like Bay and Holliday want
plus I was messing with you man

True. Many fans don’t realize that those things matter to a FO.

Well, quit being so clever about it so I can figure it out!

Paul, while I understand your analysis. Would you really consider a Holliday a power bat at Turner Field? He spent years at Coors Field. Last year he didn’t do too great. I’d take Swisher and Nady.

Swisher’s HR totals each of the last four seasons…35,22,24, and 29.
Nady’s HR totals each of the three seasons prior to his injured season last year…17 (130 games), 20 (125 games), and 25.
No, they aren’t 40 homerun guys (show me any 40 HR guys that are available), but they have quite a bit of pop, and would improve the LF spot.

Paul Lentz is the ultimate B.S.er…
Ironically, that is one of the reason’s why I suggested that the Braves take a chance and trade for Milton Bradley. Our offense could use some spark and fire. At times last year, there were games where our offense looked devoid of life. I feel that Holliday would be a better fit than Jason Bay.
