Nah, I would miss him a bit. Kinda like missing a migraine headache….

Guys, I have no words of wisdom tonight. Just was getting on line for a few other issues, and decided to stop by for a few minutes.

Getting ready to head down toward southern cal for a week with my family. Will probably check in a few times next week, but probably not too much. I don’t really expect much news this week for our Braves.

I have found that the scroll works well when I see a post by our infamous blog idiot.

Thanks for the well-wishes. I’ll try to be a regular during my holiday vacation, though it’s tough for me to be on top of this with my courseload, etc.

In my honest opinion, I want to see the Braves build for the future. I think we have a budding nucleus that can compete with the right additions in the coming years… 2012, 2013 and so on. I don’t feel any need to compromise that by dealing for Gonzalez or anyone else. Ideally, we need stop-gaps for Heyward and the rest of the “Budding Braves”… yeah that’s right I just coined a nickname and probably cursed us… don’t worry I won’t make that a regular slogan.

I don’t think that even WITH Holliday and Gonzalez we’re necessarily ready to usurp the Phillies anyways. (btw, Halladay is a HUGE pickup… I’ve watched almost all of his starts for three or more years now and he is far better than Lee)

It’s better to stick to the plan and fill the holes later. Call me mediocre, but there’s nothing wrong with being realistic. Too many Braves fans want us to go buy more ammo because we’re stuck in the glory of the 90’s. Let’s not forget that we could have guys like Wainwright and Neftali Feliz had the organization not felt it necessary to appease what I’d call a fairly fickle following. (sorry for the alliteration, it happens)

Eventually, yes, we may need to step up the payroll to complete the painting. But let’s do that when we know what we have in Escobar, Heyward, Schafer, Freeman, Medlen, and the others. When these guys are bonafide big-leaguers (or not), we’ll be ready to make that assessment.

You Know, Johnny Damon wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I wouldn’t want to pay him what he is asking for, but he would be an upgrade over Garrett Anderson. Offensively, he is a decent bat. You can expect a .275 average, .360 OB and .450 SLG. He’ll hit around 20 HR’s, steal a few bases, and walk almost as often as he strikesout. His peripherals have stayed mostly steady and he’s not gonna kill you with his fielding (yes I know he throws like a girl, maybe Yunel can teach him something).

Bottom line, he’s probably a better option than most of the guys Atlanta has been connected to so far, as long as you don’t have to pay him up to his current demands.

Due to Damon’s sally arm, I’m not a huge fan of him being in Atlanta. That being said, he’s a playoff tested and proven veteran, who happens to be a better option to bat leadoff for us. Not because he’s that much better than McLouth (their stats are about the same), but because Nates might prove more valuble lower in the order.

If not Damon in the leadoff, than Damon in the 2-hole, and Prado is allowed to drop, providing Bobby with more pop down lower in the order.

I stated it a few weeks ago, that the Braves might be better off focusing their attention towards a better leadoff hitter, and dropping McLouth and/or Prado/Escobar lower in the order, and using their gap power to drive in runs with doubles.

Just not sure Damon is that guy. Especially if he wants what some have claimed he told the Yankees he wants. No thanks. But for one year at around 7-8 million? I might think of that before I think of moving a guy like Dye or Nady to 1B for the same amount of money.

His arm is worse than Loaf’s (and just about anybody who actually has an arm physically attached to their body), but his range is better than Loaf’s, so the defense likely would wash out.

But only if Bobby lets him grow the hair and the beard back. If Johnny Damon becomes a brave, I want Captain Caveman dammit!!

Also by then Jurrjens and Hanson will be coming into their primes, as will Yunel, Of course I’m hoping we can contend every season, and I’d love to see it in 2011 but again, there’s nothing wrong with being a realist.

Another day, another non productive day for the Braves. By the time they get around to dealing a pitcher, all the bats that could help us will be signed by another team. If they sign a second tier guy, well then they deserve to finish 3rd or 4th in the division. You can’t win when you don’t have the right players. Who knows, maybe tomorrow they can resign Ruben Gotay and really make our off season a huge success.

TnBrian

Thinking about Damon for a minute, because I haven’t put much thought in the guy at all, he’d almost be a perfect fit. Leadoff guy that’s always been a pest to a pitcher. Like N8 mentioned above, his arm is terrible, but his range is apparantly above average(I’ll take N8 word for it). I’m with a lot of you here in that they do need to move DL first to see exactly how much they have to spend on FA. Love Nady, think he’s a good fit at 1st & I’m coming around to the idea of Damon as well. I can see them signing him at $8M for 1 year or say $14M on a 2 year deal. His situation w/ the Yanks right now sends a red flag though. He wants to get his pay. We’ll see & all I’m saying is he’d be good fit for us.

China Grove

December 20th, 2009

The one thing I’ll say about Damon is that he’s a gamer- a great clubhouse guy and true student of the game. I’ll have to think about the actuality of signing him before I make a judgement. He could also teach Schafer a lot, which would be a huge plus. For now, I’d say 2 years, $16 million – why not? But I’m also fairly confident he can fetch more than that on the market.

I don’t know if there’s a big market for Scotty Pods/Johnny Damon type players, both Yankees and White Soxs turned em down, It also seems teams teams can find a better in house option. Schafer in LF would be 85% as much production as Damon for about 3800% cheaper.

Well to name two the Cubs will be replacing Bradley (Pods seems likely) and the Giants are definitely looking to add at least one guy… and they have the money to do so with Molina likely gone and Big Unit’s $8M off the books.

They’ve offered Bay 5 years, 78 million according to what I was reading earlier. It seems like Bay doesn’t desire playing there, though, pitcher’s park and all… so I think that makes them the front-runner for Damon, in whom they’ve also expressed interest.

Others may be right that we can snatch Damon at $8M or 2/$14 but I feel as if this is too low. The Giants will surely outbid that and may have already. Realistically, I think Damon can expect to go for $10M or 2 years/$17M

Get Damon & Nady for a year & it seems like a smart plane to me. I think some of you are thinking Damon & think long, expensive contract which would be dumb, but not on a year deal, maybe two year type deal.

NO he ain’t, especially at 8m +. He is not a bit better lead off man than Nate. his OBP is the same and his steal success ratio is less . his S% is about the same as is his OPS. The same damn hitter as Nate, we do not need to spend 8-10 mil multi-years for that. We already have the same player cheaper and younger.

TnBrian,

I, for one, am not saying I wouldn’t like to have Damon. I’m saying that he won’t take a one-year offer when he get two from someone who needs him more than the Braves do. Giants are likely contenders, I don’t know for a fact but it seems like they could offer him UP to $21/2 years. We can’t afford or want to pay that.

I’ll have to give it further thought on whether I’d personally like to have him. Obviously it’s an upgrade from Loaf or Church, and I do like Damon, but again, I can’t realistically see him signing with us given the economics.

no, brian, i’m thinking we need a LF who might knock in 100 runs. damon isnt going to do that, especially if you take him out of NY with the short porch in right. plus, he’s a left handed hitter and we need righties. and on top of all that, he’s got a terrible arm and is expensive.

What you are forgetting is if we got damon we could move mclouth down in the order to be more of a run producer. I agree with an earlier post that we only want damon if there is a clause in the contract that all the hair has to come back!

no I’m not forgetting it Jason, I just don’t necessarily believe it would work as well as many think.
like I said Damon is too expensive in years most likely and he is old so he might hit the wall any year and I hate his arm.
If he could be gotten at a reasonable price, say 1/6m or 2/10 at the most I’d say fine, but the guy was asking 3/30 or some such foolishness. As other posters say here frequently will he be happy and play hard for so much less than he wanted?
that last was sarcasm if you missed it. :)
