Prado’s a good major league hitter, and far better than most ever expected slugging wise. I really don’t think most scouts saw him as ever being a consistent ML starter so he’s already well above the curve. Kudos for getting it right on him.
I agree that you have Prado’s best case projections, except for RBI’s hitting 2nd. Come on 80 rbi’s from the 2 hole? Hitting behind McLouth who’s more of a 6 hitter than a leadoff guy?
Don’t think Prado will hit 20 homers but he will hit 50 doubles which I will take any day of the week. ERik
you do realize that he didn’t say that Prado was a bad player, right? Just that he was not gonna hit 20 homers, which he won’t most likely. His hitting mechanics make that pretty unlikely. And don’t give me the same kind of crap because I was pushing Prado on this board back in 2007 long b4 you even had a clue.

Braves have $78,892,000 committed to the 2010 payroll without arbitration raise to Moylan and Diaz. With raises, I suspect it will be around $83,392,000. Assuming the 2009 payroll ($96,726,166) is sustained, the Braves will have about $13,334,166 to be able to sign a 1B, RF, and 3 bench players
also Nolie, for your simpleton mind, that’s why I said I didn’t think Prado would hit 20 homers, I said I thought 12-15 ok pumpkin. Little angry person that you are, Maybe next time I can draw my comments in crayon for you, like you are used to how’s tha pumpkin?

I saw a lot of Saito incentives are for finishing games. I wonder if him and Wagner are going to do like Soriano and Gonzo and alternate depending on who comes up.
Saito’s base salary will be $3.2 million, according to a major-league source. He can earn $2.3 million in appearance-based incentives — $500,000 based on straight appearances, $1.8 million based on games finished (which will be difficult to reach, because Wagner will be closing).
We had the budget. I’ve drawn it up dozens of times this month UGAACCT

What didn’t you like about Soriano? The fact that he dominant and nasty? But no, that gets overshadowed because of a couple blown saves (only 4 actually. For comparison Rivera had 2 and Papelbon had 3)
We need to get old. Wren understands this. After all, we have an old manager. We need to hoard as many old players as possible so Bobby will feel like he’s dealing with sons, not grandsons.
I’m all for signing Cameron and Delgado. They have the experience we need, folks. They’ve been through the wars. If a starter has to be traded, I think Jurrjens needs to go. While he thinks like a grizzled vet on the mound, he isn’t old. Hanson also thinks like a grizzled vet, but he’s tall and will probably be arthritic sooner than Jurrjens because of that extra height.
The Over The Hill Gang will bring a title to Atlanta. We will have a parade right down Peachtree. Believe it.
I’m not talking about this past season. He was shut down this season. But to me he is a contract pitcher. He shows up when he needs to to get the next big contract.
Turns out that not only did Kenshin Kawakami play into his decision — Kawakami talked to him quite a bit about how much he enjoyed his first year in Atlanta — but so did Billy Wagner. He and Saito got pretty close during Wagner’s short stint with the Red Sox last year, when “Wags” would sit next to him in the bullpen every night and talk to Saito, who seems almos as engaging and outgoing as Wagner is.
Oh, and between the two of them, they have 77 years and seven kids (78 years after Saito turns 40 in February).
Wagner has four kids including three boys; Saito has three girls, who’ll stay behind in Japan and continue to attend school there.
Braves will pay the two of them about $10 million next season, not counting incentives Saito could make through games-finished incentives. That’s almost exactly what the Braves paid Soriano and Gonzalez combined last year (and obviously a lot less than they’d have paid to keep them for 2010).
Chop Chop…..maybe that’s why I’m not so concerned about their ages…..’cause I’m old myself! Gotta go and will join that Over The Hill Gang in Atlanta for the parade!
DOB – What do you think about Carlos Delgado filling the Braves current void at 1st? He could probably be had for slight bargin, which would have the potential of being a moderate to low risk/ really high reward type deal. He did hit 38 HRs for the Mets in 2008. He’s not my favorite choice in the whole FA pool (or even the trade market), but he just has that potential. Then you could fill in with someone like Rick Ankiel in the OF instead of a raw power hitter that you might have to give up prospects to get via trade.
Random, December 3rd, 2009, 4:26 pm … “But my main position all along has been to trade Lowe unless they cannot extend Vazquez, in which case trade Vazquez and keep Lowe.”
You are dead right on this one. And, as a few people in this blog have been pointing out, the chances of signing Vazquez to a club-friendly, 3 year, $9M/year contract are exactly zero.
Either Vazquez is a 3 year, $12M-$15M guy or he’s gone.
I also have confidence that Lowe will improve next year (return to normal if you will), so, he will be the better keeper anyway.
great job Wren. I also like the semi-surprise in the fact that we learn about the deal as it is being finalized with short notice to the press conference. Looks like Mr. Wren learned from last year.
It also does not hurt, as DOB said, for the Braves to have played well this year, have stacked starting pitching, a top young catcher and SS, a Hall of Fame 3B, and an elite prospect coming next year in Heyward. Combine that with Bobby’s last year and it looks like people want to be a part of this.
Those criticial of Saito, you realize he didn’t have any arm issues at all last season, right? Had a sprained elbow ligament in 2008, but no surgery and no problems since. In fact, he claims to have never been in the training room at all last season for his arm, not even for the typical stuff that will land a pitcher in there several times during the course of a season.
“P-Town Brave
Wow…way too many naysayers on here considering we just got two lights out pitchers that don’t walk people and miss many bats…
What the heck will please you people?!”
I like Wagner and Saito. They were 3rd and 6th on my RP’s available list. However I only wanted 1 guy, and prefered Saito as he was cheap and 1 year only. I wanted to save all my money and trade chips for 1 impact bat, rather than spreading it around to a lot of old guys like Wagner/Saito/Cameron/Dye/Konerko who admitidely have been impact players fairly recently but are now expected to be average with distinct possibility of DL time.
But if they get any impact bat of Laroche level or better, without giving up excessive prospects, I can still be pleased. I just worry we can no longer afford Laroche.
I was talking to some co workers saying that I felt when I get home from work, someone will be signed. Saito is a good choice and I like this as a complimentary signing to go with Wagner.
I just worry we can no longer afford Laroche. UgaACCt
you have a point, but I have never expected them no re-sign Roachie, not really. It might still happen obviously but I saw/see it as a longshot. I think a trade will bring back a hitter.
Good move by Oakland if that report is true. They’ve been one of the most boring teams in baseball with little offense the last handful of seasons. Fox will be a good DH for them. With Seattle aggressive on the free agent starting pitching, the AL west could be competitive next year.
I’m hoping Seattle loses out on Harden, Chapman, Wolf, etc.. and takes Lowe off our hands.
And the Mad Dog acquisition generated the one and only ring. Klaus
you’re right, but he was a PITCHER Wren’s pretty good at those. Big trade coming up…and then we will mope around here till Feb cause nothing exciting is left to happen.
Well shoot, folks. At this rate we’re gonna have our whole shopping list taken care of by Christmas. Get ready for a couple months of lineup-related bickering after that. Maybe ole Frank should pace himself, eh?
DOB, you’ll get a kick out of this. My 6 year old daughter was standing by my desk while I was reading the blog, and she asked why so many people were spelling DOG wrong. Kind of cute.
Well, Wren isn’t messing around. He’s got the bullpen set. Now on to the offense and trading one of these starters. I like both signings. I always felt if we lost both Soriano and Gonzo to other teams that we couldn’t go into next season relying on Moylan as the closer and i’m glad Wren felt that way too. Yes there is a risk with their age and injury history but their are risk with every pitcher. Gonzo and Soriano had their fair share of injuries while they were here. Not to mention they were a little overused last year by Bobby, especially Gonzo. My only worry is Soriano and him possibly accepting arbitration. Gonzo with Boras will never accept it but Soriano might. I feel though that he will land a deal somewhere else. Guys a solid pitcher and when healthy one of the best relievers out there. To me he’s the better of the two but Gonzo being a lefty adds to his appeal.
abwright (December 3rd, 2009 6:14 pm): “And, as a few people in this blog have been pointing out, the chances of signing Vazquez to a club-friendly, 3 year, $9M/year contract are exactly zero.
“Either Vazquez is a 3 year, $12M-$15M guy or he’s gone.”
Really?
I’ve been away for awhile — I did not realize that the straits for extending him at a reasonable price were at all dire.
Saito may not have had arm issues last year, but he was also only used 50 something times on a stocked Sox team that had Pap, Okajima, Ramirez, Wagner for part of the year and Masterson for the other part. Can anyone really imagine Bobby only using his primary set-up man/co-closer 55 times? I like both Saito and Wagner, but IMO the only way they both make it through the season healthy is if Bobby dramatically changes the way he manages his pen. Anyone think that’s happening in his final year…?
“And you wonder why there is no money left over to buy some $20 or so million dollar making 28 years old in their primes?”10
I personally have NEVER wondered that. However, I do wonder why somebody like yourself thinks that two guys that had career years while nearing the age of 30 (and will be in that 34-35 age range at the end of the 6 year deals both of them will likely get – if you count option years), by themselves would help this team more than 7 or 8 proven veterans would?
You do realize that if 20 million is spent on one position that means that 5+ spots on the 25 man roster would likely be similar to Greg Norton type of guys, right?
If you want to gripe about the overall payroll that Liberty Media gives Wren to work with? That’s fine. But good luck finding anybody out there that is going to side with you that the best way to make the Braves compete in 2010 is to have Bay or Holliday making 20 million on a team with a 100 million dollar payroll, that already has Chipper, Hudson and McCan making about 30 million of that 100 million.
Meaning that you are claiming to be a fan of Wren then being forced to spend 50 million dollars on the remaning 21 players on the 25 man roster.
What do you take out of Bobby’s comment at the press conference basically hinting that a deal for a hitter is happening? Are we reading too much into that?
Let me say, I like the Wagner signing and Saito signing. I was thinking yesterday when I saw they signed Wagner and were still looking for another reliever that I hoped they would sign Saito. By signing them this quick it allows Wren to concentrate on a 1B.
I know that there were some hints about a big bat being signed, but can’t really see that happening until Wren knows which of the starting pitchers will be leaving. Unless of course the bat comes by way of trade, but it seems a bit early for that to happen.
Maybe Wren has a long Christmas vacation planned and intends to have all the business tied up in the next two weeks so he can relax for a couple of months.
With the dollars that have been spent so far, you have to wonder how much the Braves have left to spend on the offense, and bench. I wonder if the club would consider trading Vazquez and Lowe to free up even more money. This would certainly help the offense and farm, and I think I read that the Braves had interest in Vicente Padilla. Crazy idea I know, but it’s an interesting scenario.

Believe it.

Just back from the Saito press conference.

“And you wonder why there is no money left over to buy some $20 or so million dollar making 28 years old in their primes?” 10
Yeah. Good luck with that.
