Anyone on here have a subscription to Baseball America? I’m thinking of ending my Baseball Prospectus website subscription (just not a lot of great content recently), and switching over the Baseball America for next year. Any opinions that anyone has that can help inform my decision would be appreciated. Thanks! RC

America is much more scout/tools oriented and Prospectus is more stas oriented. Different approaches and sometimes fifferent thoughts on the same player. America is not cheap, even if you just get the online version.
Ideally you should have both plus ESPN Insider. Enjoy.

The number #13 thing with Wagner…now that is great stuff. I love him already. Wasn’t it Wagner who pulled Lastings Milledge aside and told him to stop acting like a jackass?

Cool of McClouth to give the number up too.

I’m beginning to really like Frank Wren. The guy takes calculated risks…this was a good move with tremendous upside. And if it doesnt work out…its a one year problem about as expensive as three Garrett Andersons.

Interesting that Wagner is a friend of Chipper. Not surprising though, they are about the same age, both likely in the last few years of outstanding careers. Then there’s that outdoors thing… I’m glad to see the Braves sign him, that was a surprise for me. I figured they would spend the serious money on a big bat. Maybe they have more budget flexibility than we suppose, especially in Bobby’s last year. 2010 is starting to look very good.

noile,

What would you say about the volume of information available with Baseball America. It seems that they have a lot more content on a regular basis, but since I’ve not subscribed before I’m not sure how true that is. The past few months with Baseball Prospectus I find myself needing only 15 minutes to go through a full day of content, and even then there seems to be articles that are just as good at places like FanGraphs, without the fee.

I look out the window of my truck, and I see a large deer running at an intercept route toward me. My truck is big and white….not hard to see. He ran into the back near the drivers side tire area. Put some dents and scratches on it!

I looked in my rear view mirror, and he rolled 2-3 times, then sprang up and continued on his merry way!

Why is everyone thinking we’re buying one or several more setup guys? That has to be several orders of magnitude lower on the priority list than 1b or LF. Do you really want to spend more money on a bullpen arm that could instead get us the offense we need?

We have 9M in departing arms in Gonzalez & Soriano. We’ve already added Proctor and Abreu. So that’s more names coming in already than we have going out. Face reality, we’re done spending major money on bullpen arms. Another 1 or 2 minimum contract guys like Will Ohman or Jeff Bennett at most to come in for spring training and try to earn a spot.

Frankly, we are the team in all of major league baseball that needs bullpen arms the least as of today. We have 6 great starting pitchers, 2 of which are notorious “innings eaters” and the other 4 of whom certainly are capable of a ton of innings. Nobody has more projected innings under contract that we do. Even after we trade Lowe/Vasquez/Kawakami, we’ll still be elite in this area.

The second reason we don’t need any more arms is that Bobby has shown time after time that he is going to use the same key RP’s in all close games. Wagner, Moylan, O’Flaherety and Medlen are all people Bobby trusts. Then when 1 of them gets hurt Scott Proctor is likely to be rounding into shape. Our key bullpen roles are covered.

So we can either spend 7 more million getting another premium bullpen arm, and relegate Medlen to another year of mop-up duty, or we can give him the role he’s earned. Other teams would love to get him as a starter and it seems that many Braves fans here aren’t even considering him for the 2nd setup role. People, keep reality in mind and remember that the setup roles he and Moylan will take are far less impactful on the game than 1b and LF.

Just like good defense in LF won’t make up for a bad bat, a 5th good bullpen arm isn’t going to make up for a bad bat.

I travel quite a bit in higher elevations in the west, and the deer from around early October are coming down out of their normal habitat in search of food, as the snow level drops. That puts them right there with me on the highways.

Usually I slow down quite a bit during the winter months, but you still have to be careful.

We live in a neighborhood that is on the “bench” of the Wasatch Mountains. Up the slope a ways from the valley floor. We see dozens of deer in our neighborhood each winter, and usually they are scrambling around trying to figure out a way back to the woods. I actually feel sorry for them.

I don’t tender Church.I’m comfortable with Diaz everyday for 2 months until Heyward is called up. At that point Diaz is your 4th OF and what is Church? He’d be hard to trade at that salary.

I save that 3 or 4M and use it on a better bat for our LF and 1b acquisitions. If for some reason Church is available come spring training for about 1M I’d sign him, but not at his arbitration number.
