Background: The Braves signed Teheran for $850,000, the largest bonus given to a pitcher on the international market in 2007. After pitching sparingly in 2008 because of shoulder tendinitis, Teheran returned to the Rookie-level Appalachian League last summer and ranked as the loop’s top prospect.
Strengths: Teheran throws easy heat with plus command and mound presence beyond his years. His fastball resides at 92-96 mph and holds its velocity throughout the game. His sharp, mid-70s curveball has good depth and can be a plus pitch, particularly after he tightened its spin. His 79-82 mph changeup is also an above-average pitch at times, with depth, fade and screwball-like movement. He has impressive poise that some scouts believe borders on cockiness.
Weaknesses: Teheran is still learning how to pitch. His physical stamina needs some work, and scouts have some concerns about his mechanics, which aren’t effortless. He has a long arm rotation in the back of his herky-jerky delivery that creates deception but attracts questions about his durability.
The Future: Teheran has all the ingredients to develop into a frontline starter. He’s expected to return to low Class A Rome to open the 2010 slate. While the Braves will be cautious due to his youth and lack of physical maturity, Teheran could accelerate his timetable.

Where’s Chop Chop been? I miss the guy leaning up against the tree, smoking, and making sarcastic remarks about everyone while everyone else is playing.
Real quick nomination for funny quote of the day…this on Yahoo Sports by Dan Uggla’s agent Jeff Borris(tell me if you find something wrong with this):
“Danny Uggla’s been a full-time second baseman for the last four years. He’s performed exceptionally well at that position. Although he has the athleticism to play other positions, he’s performed remarkably over these four years at second base and there should be no reason to consider a position change at this time.”
In a regular lineup with a REAL power hitter (ie 25+ HR hitter), BMac would NOT and should NOT hit 4th.
ok, got it. your idea of a cleanup hitter hinges on how many homeruns they hit. fine. oh wait…swisher isnt a cleanup hitter, right? dude hit 29 homers last season. you confuse me.
Vazquez/prospect to MIL for Hart/Gamel/ Gillespie? Keep Gamel in the minors for a year than possibly move Chip to first next year. Plug Hart in right until Heyward is ready.
Ok, I get what you’re saying, hopefully you get what I am saying…
Anyways, I don’t like him batting 4th and it has absolutely nothing to do w/ him being a catcher. I just think he’d be better at either 5th or even 6th, BUT that really depends on what the lineup shapes up as, just as everyone else in that lineup…
I do know one thing though, regardless of who is in the lineup, Casey Kotchman should NEVER EVER bat 4th!
I commented on it last night, but I had to watch last night’s episode of “The Office” again today. IMO, funniest one in the past two seasons.
On the movie front, a couple of friends and I went today to an AMC theatre to see “Zombieland” before noon at the $6 price. We found the times online, but when we went to the theatre, found out that it wasn’t playing anymore. Since we had gone to the trouble of getting over to the theatre and had planned to see a movie, we decided to stay and see one of the other pre-noon showings of a different movie. We went with “2012.” Please, take this opportunity to learn from someone who has made the mistake of seeing such a horrible movie, and don’t see it. Ever. It’s terrible. 2 and 1/2 hours of pure tripe.
Vazquez/prospect to MIL for Hart/Gamel/ Gillespie? Keep Gamel in the minors for a year than possibly move Chip to first next year. Plug Hart in right until Heyward is ready. (tampabrave)
I’d like to think the Braves will do better. Both in a return for Vazquez and in acquiring a power bat.
I for one, am glad that the Braves will not try to get Holliday or Bay. They are not worth the money certain teams will pay them. The are good players, but not elite.
I would agree that a trade would be a better idea, I just keep thinking when was the last time a quality young hitter was traded. Our options are a overpaid lowe or a one year rental in vazquez…without including one of our top 5 prospects I don’t see how wren would pull that off. This team with freeman and heywood comming for sure by 2011 and having hudson jj and hanson set for 11 and 12 is not likely to give up a top propect. I still think we are at least a year away from being able to be considered true contenders to Philly in the east
Okay, I will throw this out there and I’m sure it has already been discussed but I have been gone for awhile.
It is no secret the Braves wouldn’t mind moving Derek Lowe. I think the Braves could trade him to a handful of teams if they are willing to eat about $21 mil of the remaining $45 mil on his contract. Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Rangers would have great interest I would think. I also think teams like the Rockies, Brewers, Cubs, and Astros would at least kick the tires. Hell, even the Mets and Phillies would be interested. Here is my question. Should the Braves be too stringent in asking for a good return back or should they take a modest return and just be glad to free up the money which could be used to go HARD after Bay or Holliday and could also go toward making a run at LaRoche or even Ryan Garko or perhaps even Rick Ankiel if he would be willing to play 1B?
Gillespie was killing it in AAA last year and has put up “fairly decent” power. .532 slug and .932 ops. Plus he had a 27/32 BB/K ratio. Gamel erases our need for a chipper replacement, and Hart was an AS in 08. Granted that doesn’t provide the 30 hr bat everyone on here wants but it is a solid return and unfortunately teams in the West divisions are the teams we match up with best. If that doesn’t work i wouldn’t mind Swisher. High OBP guy, hit at least 21 hr in each of last 5 years, good in the clubhouse. And we keep Vazquez there.
I agree that trading Lowe in hopes of getting a good young hitter is not likely to happen. At least not a power hitter. But, I don’t think trading Lowe will be as hard as a lot of people think. If the Braves eat about $21 mil of his contract that would mean any team acquiring him would basically be getting him at a 3 year-$24 mil deal. If you think about a pitcher of Lowe’s capability and track record that is pretty damn good even in a weak and strained economy. Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Dodgers would jump at that deal. The problem is those teams wouuld want to trade the likes of Melkey Cabrera, Rocco Baldelli, Juan Rivera and Juan Pierre which really doesn’t solve the problem of needing a power hitter.
This will sound crazy but hear me out. I think the Braves should offer Lowe up and be willing to eat $21 to $24 mil of his contract to the Yankees. They ask for Shelley Duncan and a quality mid level prospect iin return. Yes, that doesn’t sound much but it frees up a lot of necessary money. Duncan would be a low risk high reward kind of acquisition. The Braves can put him at 1B and platoon him with Matt Diaz or even sign someone like Ryan Garko on the cheap. Yes, Duncan tends to remind one of Scott Thorman but like I said it is a low risk high reward acquisition and besides he’d be just keeping the seat warm until Freeman is ready later in the 2010 season or 2011.
At least not a power hitter. But, I don’t think trading Lowe will be as hard as a lot of people think. If the Braves eat about $21 mil of his contract that would mean any team acquiring him would basically be getting him at a 3 year-$24 mil deal. (RobertCITB)
, I doubt they will eat any of Lowe’s salary, but I will bet anything that they aren’t gonna eat half of it, they will just trade a different pitcher if they can’t do any better than that with Lowe.
RCIB-The Braves are not going to eat $21 million of Lowe’s salary, nor will it be necessary to do so. They may not get much in return, but they will be able to trade him along with his entire salary. The market for pitching is non-existent this year and $15 mil for a perennial 15 game winner who logs 200 IP is NOT that expensive in the scheme of things.
Robert, If the Braves were to eat that much of his salary, he would be the 4th or 5th highest paid player on the Braves and yet be pitching in the Bronx. No way, they will eat that.
Lew, I hope you’re right. I’m not disagreeing with you. But, I think the problem with Lowe isn’t so much the money but the length of the contract and that is why I think eating some of the money may be necessary. Lowe is 37 years old and will be 40 by the time the contract is up. Even for teams like the Yanks and Red Sox it may be hard to justify paying a 40 year old pitcher $15 mil a year especially if he is only marginally better than he was this year.
On the other hand, you do have a point about the pitching market this year. Lackey is the only free agent of any real value and Felix Hernandez and Halladay are the only pitchers of note who are trade candidates.
But, something else to keep in mind is the teams who could afford to pay all of Lowe’s salary aren’t in that desperate need of pitching. The Sxo have Beckett. The Yanks have Sabathia and Burnett. Even the Angels could look at Saunders and Kazmir. About the only teams would be that desperate and have anywhere near that kind of cash are the Cubs and Dodgers and I’d say its a safe bet the Dodgers are a no!
Here is a problem Wren will run into. The teams who most need starters are the Brewers, Mets, Twins, Rangers, Cubs and Dodgers. I don’t see the Dodgers wanting Lowe back. The Cubs and Mets could afford to eat all of Lowe’s contract but would they. And, the Brewers, Twins and Rangers cannot afford to pay an aging pitcher $15 mil a year for the next three years.
Robert(CITB)- Aside from Micheal Young and Kevin Millwood, the Texas Rangers are paying minimum or close to it on all other players. Okay- Kinsler makes like 3 or 4 million, but even Josh Hamilton is only costing them like 550,000 – 600,000 or so. So they probby could take on some significant salary. (At least I believe that’s still the Rangers’ payroll situation… I could be wrong)
Well, the Rangers signed Hamilton to an extension so he is getting paid now. But, the problem could be the Rangers are wanting to sign Marlon Byrd or Vlad Guerrero which will cost some coin. Also, how willing would the Rangers be to trade one of those young sluggers for Lowe. I know Nelson Cruz’s name has come up but he just completed his first full season. Chris Davis is somewhat attractive at 1B because of his power but his strikeout rate is scary. And I would love to see Justin Smoak in a Braves’ uniform. The kid played her in Oklahoma City, where I live, and can flat out rake but I don’t think I would give him up for Lowe.
But, something else to keep in mind is the teams who could afford to pay all of Lowe’s salary aren’t in that desperate need of pitching.
The Braves do not eat salary and a team that could pay no more that 2.5mil for a LFer last season is not gonna throw 5-7mil per year out the window this year. Wren will either find a deal that transfers all of his salary as Lew says, or he will trade someone else. I find it hard to believe that anyone could think it might happen in this climate.
One option the Braves could consider at 1B as a short term solution is Hank Blaylock. If he could regain his power stroke you are talking about a guy with the potential to hit .300 with 30Hr and 100 RBI.
WayneRed Eye is funny as heck, a little egdy at times, but funny none the less.
Hmm…never heard of that one. I like all those old TV shows– Hogan’s Heroes, I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith, Leave It To Beaver, The Flintstones…haha, got 64 episodes of Hogan’s Heroes on my iPod…and counting.
Other non-news shows are OK, so long as you keep questioning everything….from all networks…..know what I mean? Don’t let anybody tell you what to believe….even me. Keep your eye on the prize……
That’s the truth.
P-Town BraveFirst, this one may hurt McFann’s feelings…(love ya girl) BMac is NOT a cleanup hitter…
That doesn’t hurt my feelings! All season long I was screaming for him to bat fifth–reason being that his best numbers have come from the 5/6 spots.
Course…the more I think about it now the more I come around to the thinking that it might not be the best idea to judge his cleanup stats by 2009, I mean…battling those eye problems, who’s to say he would have hit way better in the fifth spot? Course, they may have been somewhat improved ’cause there’s a certain amount of added pressure that comes with batting cleanup…I think…
If he could regain his power stroke you are talking about a guy with the potential to hit .300 with 30Hr and 100 RBI
maybe, but he has averaged about 80 games per year for the last three years and really sucked in a great hitters park last season. odds seem kinda low to me,plus he’s a left hand hitter with terrible splits against lefties and poor splits away from home.
Course…the more I think about it now the more I come around to the thinking that it might not be the best idea to judge his cleanup stats by 2009, I mean…battling those eye problems
Plus it’s not nearly as big of a sample size as you’d like to begin with.
I think they should sign Vasquez to a 3 year extension ASAP to tell the market that he is not available. Then Wren doesn’t have to spend the time dealing with Vasquez trade suggestions from his fellow GMs and it would enable serious talk about Lowe and Kawakami deals a lot sooner. After last off season’s big deal misses, none of us or the Braves need another bunch of those floating around until March.
FCS trade Vaz and get all the speculation over with. He’s a good pitcher, but he ain’t Lincecum etc. With the other guys in the rotation, the world ain’t gonna end if he stays or goes. I’m not sure I can stand to read even one more ludicrous trade proposal.
I was born in ATL and when I was young, I loved going to the GA/GA Tech Freshman football game more than any other sporting event. My Dad went to Tech and I was as big of a Tech fan as McFann is a McCann fan.
You “young uns” don’t remember when Freshmen were ineligible to play varsity sports and they had completely separate teams. Anyway, they played the game on Thanksgiving Thurs at Grant Field for the benefit of the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
Some things change for the better, but I’m not sure this was one of them.
I haven’t seen a whole lot of chatter yet about Vlad. Am I the only denizen thinking he might fill the bill for a year or two? He’s going to be 35 this next season and he still seems pretty fearsome to me. Still hits around .300, decent power, right hand hitter who doesn’t K a lot. Start him in right for 2-3 months and move him to left when Heyward enters stage right. Works for me if his “needs” aren’t outlandish. I don’t know if he still has his rocket arm and his defense is often an adventure but I’d give him a try if we can’t trade for something better. Does seem personality challenged though.. or maybe it’s just the language problem.
I’ve recommended the singer on the blog before, but I’ll continue to drop his name around every now and then: for those of you who enjoy folksy music, check out Joe Pug when you get a chance. He’s a young kid who sings very strong lyrics and is worth getting into. He’s only got one EP out at the moment, but word is that his first full-length album will be coming out in early 2010.
Here’s his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/thejoepug . My personal favorite songs on that list are “Hymn 35,” “Nation of Heat,” and “Hymn 101,” but each song is good.
AdirondackDave- Vlad has not one, but 2 bad knees from what I can remember. He’s definitely not an option for outfield and don’t know if he’s ever played 1B in his life, so he seems destined to become a DH somewhere. I mean, he fits the position description to a ‘T.’ I think even his bat has slowed down a bit, so unless Braves could get him for 1 or 2 million- he’d be a horrible chance for them to take.
Redstick19 — I didn’t realize Vlad’s pins were that bad. I think he played something like 100 games in RF last year which should have clued me in. I don’t think he’s ever played first in the majors so I guess you’re right, looks like a DH job in his future.
Key Largo (8:39)..remember going to the same game …for me it was in 54. Hero of the game was a guy named Stan Flowers (Tech). Think I may be the only person I know who roots for Tech AND the dogs.
Had to step off for a few. Previous engagement. As I said before, IMHO, I don’t think the trade of our SP would bring the requisite big 1B bat. Only possibility IMO, ADAM DUNN. There’s no doubt the NATS need pitching, but they don’t want LOWE’s salary even if we’re eating part of it, and KK would not land DUNN stand alone. Anyway, I don’t think the BRAVES should pursue that route.
I would sign LaROCHE for three in the eventuality either LOWE or KAWAKAMI are dealt, but no future trade restrictions for ROACHY. Then IF FREEMAN solves the hole in his swing, bring him up, and deal with the problem of two 1B at that time.
I’m assuming RICHMOND bested GEORGETOWN. I’m sure the SPIDERS haven’t forgotten the 34-0 pasting GEORGETOWN gave RICHMOND the last time they played – 1884.
richbrave – the scoop is, I am very concerned – but, on the other hand, even if they beat us and you guys do, we have a great chance of making the playoffs (eat your hearts out, those who are too-damn-important to have a playoff). I will not be able to listen to the game, as I will be having my initiation into the world of PAC-10 football, going to the USC-Stanford game tomorrow. (If she wasn’t watching me type this, I would probably say I’d rather listen to Jay and Bobby doing the Tribe game).
“Real Lew, I hear ya. Now you know how frustrating it is for me to see the comments from the guy who insists on posting as O’Brien. Only a matter of time before he posts a rumor or whatever that some trade-rumor site picks up and associates with me. You wait and see” DOB
DOB,
I know its confusing, but I just happen to use my real name when I post. For the record, I also post on the Hawks blog too.
I am not a Tar Heel but how about their recruiting class for next year. That is on top of their great recruiting class this year. It is amazing how the rich continue to get richer.
I’ve got a way for the braves to fill their off-season needs.
Make a trade for: Dan Uggla and Matt Lindstrom
Trade Derek Lowe for Juan Rivera
Sign Javier Vazquez to a three year extension
Sign Billy Wagner
Sign either Adam Laroche or Xavier Nady for 1st base
That way the braves get the power bat they need in Uggla. Get Rivera and either Laroche or Nady to add protection throughout the lineup. Lindstrom could compliment Moylan in a set up role and Wagner when healthy is still a DOMINATE pitcher.
uga-brave, I’m still roaming around here at 12:40 & I have a question for you… Bowman mentioned maybe a Lowe for Corey Hart swap. What about it? Me, no way this guy’s a cleanup hitter which appears what Atlanta is looking for, but he was pretty good before this season, & if they can get Lowe’s big money out the way & get a guy who still has upside then it sounds good to me. That bridge to Heyward thing might just work. Of course, a signing of LaRoche would be a must, imo.
what’s Hart got left in arb, 2 years? I’m not a big fan of his at all. I like a guy who makes fewer outs,I think Lowe is worth more than that but I could be wrong in this economical climate.
I keep hearing Brewers but I find it kinda hard to convince myself that they are gonna spend that kind of money that Lowe is owed, and as I’ve said B4 I don’t see the Braves eating much if any of his salary.
Let’s satisfy everybody. We’ll trade Javy and if he has a good year we will sign him as a FA since he likes it here and it’s close-relatively anyway-to his home.

Yes, very funny…
But also like saying Jeff Francoeur or Casey Kotchman were cleanup hitters…
Just because they hit there doesn’t make them cleanup hitters…

Real quick nomination for funny quote of the day…this on Yahoo Sports by Dan Uggla’s agent Jeff Borris(tell me if you find something wrong with this):
“Danny Uggla’s been a full-time second baseman for the last four years. He’s performed exceptionally well at that position. Although he has the athleticism to play other positions, he’s performed remarkably over these four years at second base and there should be no reason to consider a position change at this time.”

In a regular lineup with a REAL power hitter (ie 25+ HR hitter), BMac would NOT and should NOT hit 4th.
