Nolie – Do you remember when J. Damon played for the Red Sox, he had long hair and a very full beard? One of my favorite T-shirts of all time had a up close head shot of Damon and read:
Johnny Damon – Looks like Jesus – Throws like Mary.
I took the Phillies to play a better game than they have been playing.
What good is Howard’s stats when he fails to contribute. I turned the game off Friday and Saturday when it felt like a Braves game when they got behind. Major league pitcing is major league pitching. They should be able to do better. The number of men left on is ridiculous.
And just in case anyone was wondering why Minor only went one inning in his last start Thursday, it was because he’s going to start in the Rising Stars game on Nov. 7. So to get him on scheduled to make that start, he just got in an inning of work in his last turn and is scheduled to start and go three innings tomorrow (Nov. 2).
I’m flying out there in the morning, hopefully will make it to the ballpark in time to see all or most of his innings tomorrow. Going out there for three days, to see three of the Peoria Saguaros’ games.
PWH–it sucks we didn’t take Matzek, but in fairness, a “few million” isn’t a trivial sum of money (particularly to the Braves) and Matzek ended up signing for a lot less than he was initially asking for.
“stuff” is more than just velocity. It is also movement through both planes. It wasn’t just velocity alone with Minor , but I agree with you that velocity is often overrated. Plus with young pitchers, it’s a lot who stays healthy and who learns how to pitch. Minor does seem to have a leg up on the how to pitch part of it. He seems to have a good idea of what he wants to do. I’m hoping he works out of course, but I too was a bit disappointed that they did not take someone with more potential upside in a pick that high. Like I said he might end up being more successful than some or all of the ‘upside’ guys. ¿quien sabe?

Coach Potato, did you see on that Maddux scouting report where one scout said he lacks consistant control? I found that funny.
Phillies fans are officially the most rude, ignorant fans in baseball right now. Yeah, I get it, they were ticked at Hamels which is fine, but I think they seem to forget he was a huge reason they got to see their team win a ring in ‘08.

James was the quintessential “great changeup” guy. He had a super record in the minors cause very few guys have one down there and hitters are not used to it at all. I’m not sure life could have continued without it.
But really? Favre Cam? Seriously? The NFL is such a good product already, they don’t need to have silliness like that watering it down and making.
That all being said. You appear to be right. Getting Favre was a great move for the Vikings, as much as it pains me to type it. Not sure if they’ve got what it takes to take down the Saints in the NFC title game (don’t forget about the suddenly hot Eagles).

On a side note, isn’t it funny that Glavine is this big tough hockey guy, yet he was reluctant to hit Dale Murphy after Otis was hit (by none other than Roger McDowell). A real hockey player would have put the hurt on him. LOL. Tough spot for a young Glavine to be put in. But definitely a funny memory for those who saw it.
obviously didn’t finish my sentence about Favre Cam. To have a camera follow his “every move” for the day seems a little too Big Brother reality show for me.
The first place Vikings were playing a really big road game against a division opponent they had already beaten once. Thus a win pretty much gives them a massive cusion on GB in the division race. THAT is what FOX should be promoing. Not Brett picking his nose on the bench.
I remember FOX’s hype over the first time that Montana and Steve Young faced off was just as silly. FOX is the worst at over-hyping things that don’t need to be hyped at all. Every single person who has followed football doesn’t need FOX to tell them how “big” of a game this was.

While I was still trying to wrap my head around that shameless Bob Gibson name-drop by McCarver, I came across this interview from Chipper in forbes.com. Enjoy:
steve, I think everytime McCarver drops Gibson’s name to make himself look cooler, he must be required to follow up with the following disclamor:
“But I also was once covered in water thanks to Deion Sanders”
Then again. Similar to not needing to be reminded for the 2300th time that this was Favre’s first game as a (gasp) “visitor” in GB, those of us that remember it happening live, don’t need any reminder of it. We already think he’s a dumbass due to remembering everytime we see him.
Thanks for the info on Minor’s start. I was wondering what the deal was. I figured we’d have heard if it was an injury, so I assumed it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. But that’s great news about Minor starting the Rising Stars game.
Steve from OH -
it sucks we didn’t take Matzek, but in fairness, a “few million” isn’t a trivial sum of money (particularly to the Braves) and Matzek ended up signing for a lot less than he was initially asking for.
Braves spent 4.4 million on 24 players in the draft this year(22nd in the majors). They spent 5 million last year, although I’m not sure how many players they signed.
N8
yea there was alot of hype around Brett’s coming back to GB, and I’m a fan of Brett, i’ve with him on going to the Viks, its the perfect position for him to be in. the core of guys around him make the Vik’s very capable of going all the way to the super bowl. and it’s a big story yea but Brett said himself in his post game interview, that he knew there would be alot of hype around the game and that it would be made into more than it should have been. I understand the media side of it to, one of the best (if not the best) QB going back to his old stomping grounds is something that doesn’t happen very often, but like you said a cam to follow Brett around thru the whole game? it is kinda crazy
and DOB yea it was great to watch, plus i love NFL Redzone! i’d kind of like to see MLB do something like it, it would be alot of work but i think it would be worth it, every scored run in showed going back to back from different games like redzone does, i watched every Braves game i could, (about 85% of the games i got to see) even though i dont care for any other team except the Braves it would still be good to see the other games
DOB,
Mike Minor seems to be moving pretty quick, where do you think he will start? im sure he’ll get a spring training invite mostly to get him up against some ML talent and see how he does, but i can see him starting at AAA from the get go, i havent seen much on him, (any of yall could help me out here) but could MInor be out of the minors this year?
As I sit here and wonder exactly why the hell Lee isn’t starting this game I continue to be amazed at how great an analyst Tim McCarver is. Simply one of the greatest calling many situations before they become situations. Absolutely excellent at his craft.
Efrim yea he is out of place this year compared to last, i wonder where he went wrong and what happened to him? but thru the first few innings Hamels was making some quick work where A. Pettie (may be spelled wrong) had what like 40 pitches thru two innings?
I continue to be amazed at how great an analyst Tim McCarver is. Simply one of the greatest calling many situations before they become situations. Absolutely excellent at his craft.
Did you hear McCarver and Buck going on and on last night about how Davy Lopes was so friggin’ insightful because of some nonsense about Pettitte getting the benefit of the doubt with his balk pickoff move because he’s been doing it so long, he’s a vet, they let him get away with it? Absolute phoney-baloney b.s. I can remember McCarver having the exact same conversation about Pettitte’s balk move back in the 1996 postseason when Pettitte was in his second year. The move has never changed. It’s the same exact move Pettitte had when he was a pup. He was getting away with then, and he’s been getting away with it ever since. Getting away with it has nothing to do with being a vet, and umps getting used to it. McCarver of all people should know that since he bored me to tears talking about Pettitte’s balk move back in 1996.
Remember his physical appearance when he played for the Red Sox? He had a beard and long flowing hair. Now with that picture in mind, this was the sign held by a fan in Yankee Stadium when the Red Sox came to town.
Wow….keylargo already posted the Damon info. Sorry to repeat, didn’t realize. It was actually on a sign a fan had at Yankee Stadium and was shown on ESPN. Guess they made the T shirt to.
Chip off the old block: I don’t see Minor starting out in Triple-A. In fact, I think they’ll have him pitch some at every level, at least a little. So I’d expect him to start out in A-ball, maybe high-A (he pitched a little at low-A Rome after signing last year, had 17 strikeouts with no walks there).
He could move up quickly, be promoted from one level to the next, as soon as he shows he’s ready. But I’d anticipate him spending much, if not all, of the 2010 season in the minors. But who knows what might happen if he excels right away? Have to wait and see.

While I was still trying to wrap my head around that shameless Bob Gibson name-drop by McCarver, I came across this interview from Chipper in forbes.com. Enjoy:

So does anyone think it’s dawned on CC that Utley will kill any fastball he throws low middle in?

steve, I think everytime McCarver drops Gibson’s name to make himself look cooler, he must be required to follow up with the following disclamor:
“But I also was once covered in water thanks to Deion Sanders”
Then again. Similar to not needing to be reminded for the 2300th time that this was Favre’s first game as a (gasp) “visitor” in GB, those of us that remember it happening live, don’t need any reminder of it. We already think he’s a dumbass due to remembering everytime we see him.

Thanks for the info on Minor’s start. I was wondering what the deal was. I figured we’d have heard if it was an injury, so I assumed it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. But that’s great news about Minor starting the Rising Stars game.

it sucks we didn’t take Matzek, but in fairness, a “few million” isn’t a trivial sum of money (particularly to the Braves) and Matzek ended up signing for a lot less than he was initially asking for.
Yeah you’re right. I was just being picky.

Braves spent 4.4 million on 24 players in the draft this year(22nd in the majors). They spent 5 million last year, although I’m not sure how many players they signed.

yea there was alot of hype around Brett’s coming back to GB, and I’m a fan of Brett, i’ve with him on going to the Viks, its the perfect position for him to be in. the core of guys around him make the Vik’s very capable of going all the way to the super bowl. and it’s a big story yea but Brett said himself in his post game interview, that he knew there would be alot of hype around the game and that it would be made into more than it should have been.

Three things were made evident by that play at the plate with Howard:
1) Johnny Damon might have the biggest Sally arm in MLB. Only Juan Pierre’s might be worse.
2) Ryan Howard is paid to hit HR and jog around the bases, and will never win any sliding contests.
3) Another missed call by the umpires. Pathetic.

And on the subject of Johnny Damon’s arm…….
Remember his physical appearance when he played for the Red Sox? He had a beard and long flowing hair. Now with that picture in mind, this was the sign held by a fan in Yankee Stadium when the Red Sox came to town.
Johnny Damon: Looks like Jesus, throws like Mary.
