If you were LaRoche, would you sign for 2 years at a club happy price, if you knew they were going to deal you once Freeman was ready? (not saying he wouldn’t, but I don’t know…..I wouldn’t)

Though it was not part of the story, but I did have a cousin back in the day, that was a Daisy Duke type! She ended up getting pregnant when she was 17, married to a no good redneck, then ended up killing them both (she was driving) between Greenwood and Abbeville trying to pass too many cars on a two lane……

Boy was she purty though!

This also allows the Braves a chance to give Heyward time in AAA without people questioning that he should be called up right away (RC)

you’re dreaming there.if H hits at all in ST there will be lots of bloggers demanding he start the season in the bigs, and bitchin’ like a Robert if he doesn’t ;)

Hey, in a way, this Heyward thing could make things a little simpler for the Braves this offseason. By that, I mean that if he’d gone to the AFL and hit .350 with 10 homers and a 1.200 OPS or something like Flowers did a year ago, then the Braves might feel more pressure to keep a spot open for him in spring training and be less inclined to pursue an OF this winter. But with only 50 games above the A-ball level, plus the four in the AFL, they might now (if they didn’t already) feel more of an urgency to bring in a slugger this winter who can play an OF corner.

generally they count ST and Sept at bats with less consideration.Schafer really worked out well in that circumstance didn’t he? There have been hundreds, probably thousands, of players over the years who had a hot spring and then floundered. People on here act like the world is gonna end if some prospect has to spend some needed time in AAA.

Lew

Yes, I did say that the Phillies had question marks last off season and they did. Utley was not expected to return from surgery for the first half of the season , but he didn’t miss any time. That certainly made a huge difference I also said there was no way Lidge repeated his 08 season. I was right, too, but their pitching was way better than I ever thought they would be. That was the big difference maker.

I think the Philies will have a good team again this year. What I was saying was that they would implode under all the contracts in the next couple of years and that they still had question marks about their pitching going forward. Lee is only signed for this year, Myers is always iffy, Happ has only had one season under his belt and Blanton’s contract will be up in a year or so. Pedro did pretty well, all thins considered, but I doubt he could pitch an entire season that effectively.

But do I expect them to be in the mix in 2010, probably even to the point of being the favorite? Absolutely. But I also expect the Braves to be there, too and I like the Braves pitching going forward for quite a few years much more than I like what Philly has going.

Lies

I am not opposed to having a player go down for more seasoning. I am also certain that you can’t really say that Schafer did poorly because he came up too fast, as there is a question as to whether that was the case, or was it injury associated. (he started off well, btw)

I will trust in the Braves folks to determine if Heyward should go north with the big club, or if he should get some AAA time. I just think it’s a little premature to decide what it will be on October 27th.

Nauseating to say the least. They spent almost a half a billion dollars last off season on the three best guys in the market, not named Lowe anyway.{:

Now their pompous fans are beginning to take bows up this way. They have to go down to the Phils. Come on Matlock (Charlie Manuel), make this happen.

The Mets have one of the highest payrolls in the NL if not the highest. I don’t expect them to spend like the Yanks – who can? But it’s not like Wilpon has been sitting on his wallet.

I don’t care if he gets a nickel of the $50 mil. I’m just glad he didn’t lose the $500 mil or more that was reported. I now expect the Mets to keep their payroll near where it was.

I heard Beltran on the FAN with the daytime guys back in August and he said every decision about his injury he made himself with advise from the Dr.s. The Mets let him decide if he wanted to keep playing (which he did for a while) and when to shut it down. They also let him come back when he was ready. He absolved the Mets 100%. Fransesca jut loves to tweek the Mets fans.

Hey. They could always bring in Larry Johnson. He needs a job, and he can hit. What’s that? Hitting women doesn’t count? Oh. Never mind.

For the record, I went round and round last year with multiple people on how Ibanez should have been our first choice. But was told his bat wasn’t good enough to make up for his horrible defense.

My thought is that if Atlanta doesn’t resign LaRoche then maybe that’s where the big bat comes from in a trade or signing. More likely a trade, right, because what FA 1st baseman really fits a teams need for a slugger? Delgado/Branyan do, I guess, but they’re getting old and crippled. I’d like a Derek Lee in the lineup & maybe he wouldn’t take a ton to get because he’ll be a FA after 2010.

Then Atl. could go & sign Nady or Willingham as kind of a bonus to the offense. Lord, there are so many twists & turns the offseason can take for teams that it’s damn near impossible to know anything for sure. It’s fun to guess though.

Reagan, you are correct.

I’ve gotta ask anyone: Why would the Braves (or any team without money to burn) really want Manny anymore? If he — and I don’t think he will — declines his $20 mill option for 2010, it’d only be to go somewhere for more years and more guaranteed money. Period.

He’s worth perhaps half that salary (if that) in his post-roid-suspension state, when you factor in the continual disruptive stuff on top of the modest production (modest for a bad-fielding power hitter getting paid like one of the sport’s top superstars).

Reagan,
Another strong point for Jake Fox is he can catch as well, which would allow you to use McCann as a DH in interleague games as he could serve as the emergency catcher with Ross starting. Also can play either corner infield spots.Wouldnt be a bad pickup depending on what you would have to give up.

Well, Reagan, guess what? I’m one of those crazies (40-something lifelong Braves fan with advanced degree and career in financial services industry) who think the Braves CAN afford a Bay/Holliday priced LF (and LaRoche, Hudson, and one of the closers) with a modest (3%) increase in payroll. I’m too tired of doing it to recite it again, but it is not outside the realm of possibility.

And I find people who jump up and down and stomp their feet and say, “we WON’T be players. We CAN’T afford them” to be ponderous, tiresome and ill-informed.

The key is moving a pitcher’s salary, either Lowe or Vazquez. You do that, the whole thing falls in place rather easily.

On LaRoche: I’m for giving him three years at, say, $8m per (total $24m). Here is my thinking.

Freeman won’t be ready in ‘10. Hopefully ‘11, but he’s been having adjustment issues, first at Gwinnett, now in AZ.

I don’t know how good Freeman will ever be, really. I know LaRoche is a .270/.360/.480 25/90 guy with real good defense. I can use that.

If Freeman hits .340 with power at Gwinnett next year, you move LaRoche to make room for him. LaRoche in his early 30s for a fairly modest salary should be attractive to somebody.

I’ve never been big on LeBron. He’s really good but he’s always irritated me – since his high school days.

Soph, I’m a big Shaq fan. Always enjoyed his personality, and he was the game’s dominant center for quite a while.

LeBron’s obviously a terrific player. I’ll leave it at that.
