Anders, I’m a Brooklyn Dodger, not a Bible Beater. A real New Yorker would’ve known that. (Preacher Roe)

Yeah, you got me there. How obvious was that? An old Brooklyn Dodgers fan on the Braves blog. Anyway, it was a play on words, so loosen your suspenders and laugh a bit. Being the only guy on the blog who actually remembers when we pulled out of the last great depression you shouldn’t be all gnarly.

Is there any reason to expect more than 280, 15-20 HR, and 80 RBIs from Chipper next year? He will be one year older, has had nagging injury issues for the last 3-4 years that have limited his playing time (or his contribution when he tries to return too soon), and his power outage goes back to the second half of the 2008 season when he hit for average, but not power. With those numbers he should be considered a complimentary player. Chipper would not be the 3-hole hitter next year on the Phillies, Mets, Marlins, or Nats, and he would be hitting no higher than 5th on any of those teams. McCann is an impact player, but he is a catcher and must be rested for 30 games/year (or burn out too quickly). Yunel is a good player, but not the centerpiece of a good offense. As presently constituted we don’t have a match for (Utley, Howard), (Beltran, Wright), (Ramirez, Coghlan), (Zimmerman, Dunn). The first question next year will be how long does Heyward spend in the minors before he is called up. The second question will be how long before he is ready to move into the 3-hole.

Pretty sure, in addition to Roe, nolie remembers “pulling out of last great depression.” I believe he was also present for the post-Great War recession, and the Panic of 1873. I am unclear about the Revolutionary period; ’tis difficult to find accurate records. Consider yourself bopped, sir.

I read this blog very often and have to say that some who are regulars do seem to have the “Skip Carey syndrome”. Any question or comment made that isn’t 100% logical or perfectly thought out is the rantings of an idiot. Tone down the holier than thou attitudes and maybe more people would lend their two cents. This blog isn’t just for the connected few. (Travis)

And by connected, do you mean those few privileged Braves fans who’ve been secretly told how to correctly spell the last name of the announcer of the team for 3+ decades? It’s Skip Caray. C. A. R. A. Y. A, not E. He had a very famous father who went by C.A.R.A.Y., A, not E, and a semi-famous son who goes by C.A.R.A.Y, A, and not E, as well. They may be holier than thou, these connected few, but it’s better than being dumber than dirt. Caray, not Carey. Andruw, not Andrew.

P. W. Hjort – I think you’ve probably got the broadest understanding of the current situation. You’re spot on about a bullpen in my opinion. Just because some relievers “didn’t work out” in the eyes of fans, your stats show clearly that relief pitching is not highly correlated with money spent on closers. In fact, other than Mariano Rivera, I’d postulate that any money above say $2 million each spent on closers could have been better spent on a bullpen full of relievers.

However, when guys are talking about remembering the 96 season, they don’t mean remembering it from when you were less than 10 years old. Since you’re in college now, that probably puts you as a young kid in 96.

Speaking of Travis Bickle … I saw a terrific movie on DVD the other night with a character about as intense as him. Can’t believe I missed it when it came out several years ago. It’s called The Believer , starring Ryan Gosling, one of the best young actors in films today. It’s based on a true story about a Jewish Nazi (yes, a Jewish Nazi) kid in his early 20s, a seriously intense, intelligent but conficted (obviously) and violent dude who’s a lot like Ed Norton’s character in American History X.

Gosling also reminds me a lot of Norton; he’s that good an actor. And the movie is outstanding.

Most definitely agreed that spending a lot of money on relief pitchers is a total crap shoot, short of some of the elite closers and set up men. Those can be counted on one hand, imo.

Nathan sure looked bad under pressure during the playoffs against the Yankees. The only true shut down closer in the playoffs is Mo.

That’s why I would let Soriano go, but offer arbitration for Gonzo.

Relief pitchers, generally speaking, are pitchers who aren’t good enough to be starters.

The first question next year will be how long does Heyward spend in the minors before he is called up. The second question will be how long before he is ready to move into the 3-hole.

If those are the two burning questions for the Braves in 2010, then the team will still be in the “pretender” category.

And whoever said “blog tolerance” was a virtue, LOL? It may have been, once, in this forum, but that changed with the influx of numbletards, nitwits, and nincompoops in the last couple-three years. Why should anyone be tolerant of dog**** on one’s shoes (Weejuns or not)?

He was big-time, clutch, and loved the Braves and loved competing. The man was a champion. Ditto for Marquis (rico)

ok he played forever so he had a half dozen big hit, big deal. He would have had to be even worse than he actually was not to have a few in the length of time he played. His stats prove that y’all are remembering a few memorable hits as compared to the ludicrously poor usual performance. HIs leverage numbers prove him to be a stat-padder. He slugged 230…230 FCS with 2out RISP AND late/close. He had a 230ish BA in post season where most at bats are pretty important because of the short series/go home if you lose situation. Plus he was one of the most self-centered players in baseball rivaling Rafael Palmiero in that regard and one of the least liked Braves players in clubhouse history. He had a history of steroid use and domestic abuse.
Yeah he helped Tom give us a WS win and that’s appreciated but this myth of the Great God Justice and his ‘clutch’ career is a buncha crap.

I don’t know that I would say that the Braves are built around complimentary players, but they are short on star players right now. Star power is based partly, but not completely on performance. The rest is based on charisma, good looks, or whatever makes one a star. I think most casual baseball fans could identify maybe two dozen players from around the league at a national level. I’m not sure the Braves have any of these guys right now. These are the types of guys who you see in national TV commercials, guys who get big Nike endorsement deals, making cameo appearances in TV shows, and guest spots on Letterman and Leno.

Star power may or may not be be important on the field. That’s a debate that depends largely on the size of the payroll, and the roster construction philosophy. But star are big marketing vehicles. They sell seats and jerseys, and grab the attention of casual fans. If you want your team to have a national following you’ve got to be able to market through the star powers of your players.

In the 1990’s the Braves had star power in their big three, and Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones. But today, the famous pitchers are gone Andruw has moved on, and Chipper Jones is no longer a star on the national stage. Prior to last year Chipper hadn’t made an all-star team since 2001. McCann is a great player, but he’s not a star on the national stage. I used to see Maddux and Smoltz jerseys all over the country. How many McCann jerseys were sold outside of Georgia in the past year. If the Braves had won the World series this year who would have made an appearance on Letterman? Jair Jurrjens? Javier Vazquez? No.
The lack of stars is partly due to lack of opportunity on the national stage. Missing the playoffs four straight years will do that. But honestly, is hard to imagine anyone on the team getting much attention from the national media. Hanson ans Heyward both seem to have some star potential, so maybe things are turning around.

I’ll agree with you that the Braves don’t have any star players, but I think your comment about “who would appear on Letterman” is flawed. If the Braves won the World Series, the players they have would have BECOME stars. Everyone in the country would know Brian McCann’s name, as well as Jurrjens and Escobar. Before last year, how big of a “star” were Cole Hamels or Shane Victorino?

Sooo,

Alot of rumors circulating around about what the Mets are gonna do. Quite a few people see the Mets landing Holliday and Lackey at the very least. If that happens, along with having a full season of a healthy Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Santana, I see the Mets as favorites to win the division, if not the World Series. Sorry, Braves fans, but with your ownership unwilling or unable to spend some bucks this offseason on good players (ie Holliday or Bay), there’s no way that the signings you do make offset the acquisitions the Mets and Phillies will make. You will finish 3rd or 4th again in 2010. Heyward or no Heyward, a rookie isn’t going to come in a light the world on fire. He will struggle at times like all rookies, and major league baseball ain’t the minors. Remember another one of your can’t miss prospects Andy Marte?

Bobby Hill

October 20th, 2009
5:41 pm

RC,
Maybe McCann isn’t a big star because he hasn’t been able to play on a big stage, but maybe there are other reasons. I don’t know. Star powers isn’t just about on the field performance. There are guys who have become stars with maybe only one great season, and there are guys like McCann who put up great numbers year after year and never get noticed. And its obviously harder to market foreign players because of cultural and language barriers. You’re never gonna see Jurrjens or Escobar in a national Home Depot commercial. But you might see Chase Utley or Ryan Howard in some national commercials, especially if they win again.

DOB Tell me if you think there is something to this. perhaps its just part of the Braves formula for success… If hudson comes back the braves staff shapes up a lot like it did in the 90’s? The Braves Have a guy who had early success with another team in maddux-hudson, They also have a guy they traded for from Detroit before his career really got started in smoltz-jurrjens
And finally they have a man they drafted as a home grown guy named “Tom”, Glavine-hanson

Lets hope there is something to all this!

The Mets have better speed than the Braves period. Reyes, Wright, Castillio, Pagan, Beltran by themselves are all legitimate base stealing threats. You have what, McClouth and that’s it? And that’s without any acquisitions. Yeah we will see what happens in 2010. And no one is going to make me run out of anywhere with tears streaming down my face. Certainly not you. Supes. I wonder what will happen when your cheapskate management team once again, signs over the hill, or crappy stopgaps, while other teams in the division, the Mets, Phillies, hell even the Nats, spend spend the money to get desirable FA’s. Holliday even SAID he wanted to play for one of the New York teams. Yankees don’t need him, Red Sox will resign Bay, Dodgers are about to possibly have the same thing that happened to the Padres owner, happen to them. Lackey, Yankees won’t bite, don’t need him, Red Sox are good with what they have. Dodgers will probably have to sell off parts of the teams. Holliday and Lackey will be Mets in 2010. Bank on it, and you heard it here first. Most sportswriters seem to think this is what will happen as well.

Soph,

Your rotation does not come near to being better than that. Let’s look shall we?

Lowe-Horrible season, on a decline, unmovable contract
Vasquez-Great season, but I don’t expect him to be better than this next season. Good pitcher, but played over his head, and never has had a season like this in the bigs in his career. Sell High!!
Hudson-Unknown-Must prove he’s healty. Been Okay in a small sample size this year.
Jurrjens-Good young starter, but I’m not sure how he does it, since his walk to k ratio really blows. Will probably regress. Sell High?
Kawakami-Decent back of the rotation starter. Does not blow anyone away, and will probably get knocked around a little next season, as hitters on other teams see him more frequently
Hanson- Good looking rookie, will he have a sophmore slump? Walks to many-not proven. Chuck James was great his first year too.

Santana-Undeniable Ace
Lackey-Undeniable Ace
Marquis-Had a great year, great #3 starter
Pelfrey-Had an off year, but undeniable stuff. He will rebound
Neise/Figuora-Not bad for a number 5 starters.

Braves have no ACE. If the Mets pull that off they have TWO. This is a better rotation, hands down.

OK, just so we’re clear…

Only thing I could see is I think Schneider is better at throwing out basestealers than is McCann.

 Brian McCann is just the Greg Maddux of catchers in that regard.

Soph

Thanks for the link! I’ll watch that now…

WASHINGTON – Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel received votes of confidence from chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon two weeks ago, the GM said Monday night, after joining the Mets in Washington to watch a 6-2 victory against the Nationals.

Still, sources have indicated to the Daily News that Wilpon’s view of Minaya clearly has shifted. A source recently told The News that Minaya’s three-year extension, which runs through 2012 and is believed to be annually worth $1.1 million, would not be an impediment to jettisoning the GM after the season.

Minaya said that in the conversation with Wilpon, the Mets’ COO said, “‘I want you to be our general manager. I want Jerry to be our manager.’ That type of stuff. That was said a couple of weeks ago to me and to Jerry.

“Like I told Jeff, I said, ‘Hey, Jeff. Thank you for that hope. I don’t think about those things and I know Jerry (doesn’t), either.’ We do the best job we can, and we understand when teams lose, people are going to come up with those things. People are going to say those things, especially in big markets.”

Regardless, there’s clearly dysfunction in the organization. One recent example: The scouting community has been abuzz with an account of Mets VP Tony Bernazard going into a profanity-laced tirade directed at the organization’s manager of baseball operations at Citi Field, which left witnesses in the section behind home plate aghast. According to two sources, scouts had settled in a row behind the plate during a recent game. Bernazard arrived and found a Diamondbacks scout sitting in the seat he wanted. When Bernazard’s underling suggested that the Mets VP wait until the end of the half-inning to change the seating arrangement in order to minimize the disruption, Bernazard went ballistic in a rant against his Ivy League-educated deputy.

The Mets’ spinners did a full-court press yesterday. SI.com reported that the Mets had rejected a proposed deal of Blue Jays’ ace Roy Halladay for Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Ruben Tejada and Jon Niese. If that proposal were accurate, Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi and Minaya would be the laughingstocks of baseball – one for proposing it, the other for rejecting it.

Minaya’s arrival in Washington coincided with the news that Fernando Nieve had landed on the DL with a torn right quadriceps muscle that will sideline him at least six weeks, which prompted the Mets to promote former Rockies outfielder Cory Sullivan from Triple-A Buffalo.

At least the Mets (44-48) could peer across the field at the other dugout and feel better about their problems. The Nationals, who fired Manny Acta as manager during the All-Star break, dropped to a major league worst 26-66 with last night’s loss.

Are you psychic or something? How can you sit there and say Vazquez, Jurrjens, and Hanson will regress next season? How do you know Marquis (who isn’t even a Met yet so I don’t know why I’m even arguing this) will have another great season and that Pelfrey will in fact rebound?

Honestly, having this discussion is pointless right now. We’ll talk if/when the Mets actually sign all these players.

P.S. – You say Lackey is an undeniable ace but Jurrjens & Vazquez aren’t. You do know that both JJ & Javy had more wins and lower ERAs than Lackey this season, right?
