I wouldn’t say that the Mets are far away from contending. Reyes will be back next year, Beltran will be back and healthier than last season (I say healthier because he always seems to be hurt), and they will have David Wright all season. Frenchy seemed to find his grove in NY and with all this protection in the lineup, he may do well next season. I expect the Mets will address the starting pitching and go after a 1st baseman or LF. They may even sign LaRoche, who knows? But to say the Mets are far from contending is not accurate. They WILL contend next year. That ball park was made for Reyes and if he comes back healthy, he if the spark plug for this team. They’ll be back next year, make no mistake. And as usual, the Braves with payroll constraints, won’t be able to offset the other offseason aquistions from the other teams in our league. We can’t afford Holliday of Bay. We NEED a big bopper, but they don’t come cheap. We need to address our bullpen. We need to address 1st base. I don’t want to trade Vasquez and sign Hudson to a long term deal. I like Huddy, but I think that is a mistake. I’m not saying our future doesn’t look bright, but I think it’s the Braves that are a way from contending, not the Mets.

Lew – I agree you can always assume the Yankees could be in the mix but depending how the WS breaks they may skip dumping another 100-150mm on one player.
Pettite will retire sooner or later.
Joba seems destined for the pen.
They need (or will need) two starters IMHO more so than another power bat.
They have what is arguably the best offensive/defensive infield ever and certainly in the majors today.
They could alway use some pop in the OF but they don’t need it.
I also wonder if they want to pay more luxury tax and block minor leaguers with such a strong offense.
Put it this way if they throw 150mm at Holliday or something crazy like that I have to believe Selig makes a call and starts talking openly about a salary cap.
I think with Pujols saying he is no rush to sign an extension the Cards will be very aggressive with Holliday and try to lock him up before he hits the market. Sadly for them unless Holliday overrules Boras he will test FA.
In terms of the Mets I stand by my assessment. They need lots of work and need to beef up that rotation.

VJ,hoping to plan a big trip in RV in March. We are going to Savannah first for awhile and then onto Orlando for Braves spring training. We are waiting for spring training schedule for final plans.

The Mets need two front line starters to lead that rotation. They will have over pay to get them b/c most teams (apart from the Braves) need the same thing.
1B – FA or trade
LF – FA or trade
Possibly 2B (if Castillo repeats 08 versus 09) – perhaps trade him to make room for Orlando Hudson
CF – expensive guy with fading numbers – they need him to bounce back
SS – speedster coming back from leg surgery – who knows how this pans out. Where will they be if it doesn’t?
RF – JF needs to prove the 2H09 was not a dead cat bounce
C – their regulars apart from the rookie with 19 games hit very little in 2009.
So at a min to even match up with the Braves they need two starters, a 1B, a LFer and a catcher.
It is true the Braves need a 1B and LF but I think they will bring LaRoche back at a reasonable price and they will chase Bay hard. Holliday may get a peek but he could be too expensive.
The Braves rotation buries the Mets as of today and they are better at catcher, 2B, SS (until we know if Reyes is fixed) and RF (when Heyward arrives it will be no contest).
I see the Mets going after pitching first, then someone like Chone Figgins to play LF and as a back in the INF should someone slump or get hurt.
They will likely look for a catcher via trade to get more offense from that position.
1B could be interesting b/c they could make an offer to LaRoche which the Braves would not be able to meet.
If that were to happen Wren would have lots of scrambling to do.
Now if the Mets had the farm talent I could seem them doing a hail mary trade with San Diego for Adrian Gonzo.

I love Eli. He’s my favorite QB in the NFL. But with the Giants being careful he’s just not a great fantasy option right now.
