Once again, the Braves show their schizophrenia. Pull to within 2 games of the wildcard lead last week, now on the verge of losing their sixth straight. Everyone seemed to be writing them in stone as a playoff-contending team for 2010 after last week, but sure doesn’t look that way now.
The postseason is still many years away from this group.
Well there will be a playoff game for the Al central. 87 wins will be enough to get one of those teams in the playoffs. But hey, 87 wins will be a big improvement for the braves over last year, if they ever decide to win it…
Can we please make it count this time? I need to go make dinner and do some stuff for my Monday night ministry. I’m starting to wonder if I’ll be going to bed before this one is done.
Jimmy Joe… Manny is super. See how he worked his way out of his own jam! How much more exciting 9th innings will be next season with Manny on the mound.
What are the provisions for letting a game end in a tie?
If the Braves/gNats don’t get this thing done before CCR is baked, would they call it? There is really no need to play this thing out, except maybe for the extra cash that Braves might get if they tie the Fish.
Jim (October 4th, 2009 1:31 pm): “Once again… being realistic, the Braves have no chance next year. Sure, they might be able to make the playoffs or with luck win the division. But no chance at legitimately making a run for a championship.”
Nope, your assumption is not “realistic” — it’s flat out wrong.
Once a team gets into the MLB playoffs these days, anything can happen — it’s a crapshoot, especially in the short series.
Three of the past seven World Champions were Wild Card entries (02, 03, 04).
When baseball added the Wild Card in 1995, the World Series winner has been the Wild Card 4 times, and also the loser 5 times. That means 33% of the time the Wild Card has kept playing until the end.
By contrast having the best record in baseball has only produced 3 champions and 2 runners up in the same time frame.
2006 83-78 Cards = World Champs.
Etc.
And if this season’s Braves had made it to the playoffs, their starting rotation would have probably made them favorites to represent the NL in this year’s WS.
I know I’ll get pasted for this but what the he.. Our beloved Braves need to have a serious chat with both Chipper and Lowe. Chipper, unless he turns it around in SP and in the early season should be encouraged to accept a promotion up to the front office. He seems to be plenty baseball savvy and generally intelligent. He could be both a PR asset and useful in club operations, both at the minor league level and with the major league team. Maybe he would accept a 30 year contract which absorbed some or all of his current contract obligation over a very long period of time.
Lowe, who knows.. With his history of wins and innings eating, maybe there are a few clubs who would take him with the Braves eating half his salary. I know, I know, the Braves don’t do that. Well, it’s time to start re-thinking some of those “Braves policies” which may be doing more harm than good by restricting options. I’d include dumping the no “no trade clause” as well if it might mean acquiring talent that wouldn’t be available otherwise.
Removing Chipper from the field and Lowe from the roster, if it could be done, would free up $25m to bolster the offense which is somewhere between mediocre and dreadful depending on which week or month we are talking about. In addition, offer Hudson a contract extension that included an annual reduction in salary to something like 8M, saving the Braves an additional 4-5M per year.
This 30M would enable the Braves to re-sign LaRoche and sign/trade for AT LEAST one slugging outfielder outfielder (Bay, Holliday, Braun come to mind) and upgrade 3rd base as well. With Heyward on the verge of making the clud, this should make the team a serious post season contender.
Ok, tell me why the Braves can’t, won’t, shouldn’t do the above.
