still feel horrible for matt diaz. tell you what, if it had been anybody else, the ol’ blog would be calling for his head. (can you imagine how mets or phils fans would’ve responded?) glad to see that aint happening. and that’s a testament to how great a guy diaz is. cant believe he actually gave an interview last night on tv after the game. that was a lesson for all in being a stand-up guy–choking back tears and telling the simple truth–so that his teammates didnt have to answer a million questions about him. ah well…if that play happens in june, nobody even thinks twice about it. things like that happen. hope he can shake it off, as he should. ¡viva matt!
Prado and Yunel better keep their averages over .300. Chipper needs two walks to get to 100 walks for only the second time in his career, and those two homers to get to 20. Ah, yes, it’s pretty up the stats for the back of the Topps card time.
What do you guys think about the Braves going after Jorge Cantu or Hank Blalock (my pick) for first base, with the intention of moving him to third when Chip retires? That would have an established player on the roster that can move over when Fast Freddie is ready for the big time. That way, a long term deal would make since for a first baseman.
With extensive accounting skills acquired at UGA, I have calculated what the Braves record would have been if not for Bobby Cox, Kelly Johnson, Jeff Francoeur, Garrett Anderson, Jordon Schafer, Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, Casey Kotchman, Matt Diaz, Derek Lowe, Mike Gonzalez, Rafael Soriano, Peter Moylan, Adam LaRoche, David Ross, Yunnel Escobar and Nate McLouth.
They would have gone 147 – 15.
If not for the demotion of Brooks Conrad, delayed promotion of Tommy Hanson and terrible injustices done to Martin Prado, the Braves would have been undefeated.
Chipper has 42 walks in 157 plate appearances with RISP, 16 intentionally. He also has a walk rate of 17.1%, the second highest BB rate in his career behind the 1999 MVP season. But he ain’t hitting like 1999, so why are they walking him that much? They’ve clearly not been afraid of what’s coming up behind him.
I think Chipper has actually been a good soldier not talking about how he ain’t getting much good to hit, probably so he doesn’t embarrass Mac or Garrett, but he ain’t been getting protection. There’s been some slippage, but he ain’t getting many strikes, and when he does get a strike, they’ve been giving him stuff that’s hard to drive.
Or at least that’s my hope because, if so, if you get a legit cleanup hitter in here, with Mac looming after the cleanup hitter, maybe you don’t also need to find yourself a new 3 hitter in addition to the cleanup and leadoff hitters were sorely need.
No big surprises here, seen it B4. They played way over their heads on emotion and momentum and once it got stopped there had to be a huge emotional letdown. Might bounce back, might not win another game this year. We’ll see.
I also disagree that this is all that promising for a great next season. many youngish teams that over produce one year actually fall back the following year and there are still lots of questions about this team next season despite all the optimism voiced on the board lately. It will depend on what Wren can get done this winter and how Heyward progresses next season. Keeps himself in good shape, isn’t a power guy so he shouldn’t have big decline, etc.”
