Next hurdle: Josh Johnson

Josh   (Staff writer Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien.)

We’re at the point where every game is important, the end-all-be-all. Yes, agreed, we’re there. But let me venture out on a limb and say tonight is especially so, if, for no other reason than because Josh Johnson is pitching.

The Marlins were going to run Rick VandenHurk out there until they figured out Johnson was well enough from the flu to start (he was scratched from Sunday’s start vs. the Mets). So now, the Braves face one of the best pitchers in the league, if you ask Bobby Cox, and if you look at the radar gun.

Johnson has a mid-90s fastball that doesn’t let up. He’ll throw hard in the sixth inning just as sure as the first. He has a nasty slider and changeup, and together the kind of repertoire that had him no-hitting the Braves into the sixth inning the last time they faced him in Florida on Aug. 31.

You remember that game? When Kenshin Kawakami was the one to finally help the Braves break through with his 10-pitch at-bat off Johnson? That ended in a groundout but loosened things up, and Matt Diaz followed with a single, and the Braves three runs in the next inning.

So from here on out, the Braves will face Ricky Nolasco on Wednesday. And I’d have to think nobody the Nationals are going to throw at the Braves this weekend is coming with this kind of “stuff.” So you figure this is the toughest starting pitcher the Braves will face during these last six games.

And they won’t have the Nationals’ bumbling defense to help them along tonight. And I’d doubt they’ll get another 11 walks like they did last night to grease the skids. They’re going to have to hit well to beat this guy and keep this thing rolling.

And if they do beat him, with Tim Hudson on the mound, winning out because that much more of a realistic goal. And the sky high momentum the Braves have going lifts into orbit.

Plus, the Marlins are on the brink of elimination. If the Rockies win tonight or the Marlins lose, they are done. And that leaves potential for letdown in the series finale tomorrow.

Dare we look ahead?

If the Braves go 6-0 and the Rockies go 4-2, they are tied and there’s a one-game playoff Monday. Lose tonight and the Braves need the Rockies to lose three of their next six games to the Brewers and Dodgers to force a playoff. Precarious.

Speaking of one-game playoff, things would fall in the Braves rotation so that Javier Vazquez would be the starter that day on regular rest. As much as you’d like to have him in a Game 1 of a division series, I don’t know that the Braves would have a better choice for the guy they’d watch to pitch if it came down to one game.

By my math, Jair Jurrjens would be on normal rest for Game 2 on Thursday in the division series. That would leave a decision on Game 1. Derek Lowe would be on regular rest and brings a wealth of playoff experience. Or you have the young Tommy Hanson who’s been dominant, has been more consistent than Lowe of late and throws the kind of blistering stuff you’d like to have in the playoffs.

Interesting decisions ahead, if the Braves can keep this interesting.

Chipper is two HRs away

Chipper Jones needs two homers in the last six games to become the first player to open his major league career with 15 20-homer seasons. He’s tied with Eddie Mathews at 14. That’d be doing something, considering the off year Jones has had, and it’d give him something to feel good about in an otherwise off year.

Cox for one thinks this pennant race is pumping new life into the “ol” 37-year-old.

“He’s swinging really well right now and he’s catching everything at third, running the bases well,” Cox said last night. “He’s gotten energized here I think, with the run that we’re on. And it’s lifted him up a little bit to where he normally is at the plate.”

Nolasco might be a good place to start for Jones. Jones has hit four home runs in 23 career at-bats against tomorrow night’s starter (.478 overall).

He’s hit in four straight, including three multi-hit games in Washington. He’s 7-for-17 (.412) with two doubles and a homer in that time.

I think Jones really just wants to contribute whatever he can to the Braves offense at this point. You gotta love his typical honesty, giving himself a hard time about his situation.

“I guess it’s a pretty good time to be rounding into form, 156 games in,” Jones said. “I would be a lot more upset if I weren’t contributing this time of year, especially with the team doing what it’s doing. I’m still not satisfied with where I’m at but I’m getting there. It’s nice to be coming off a couple multi-hit games and hit a homer in a big win for us. I’m just trying to be one-ninth of the equation.”

Moylan is the man

Congrats to Peter Moylan, who just keeps taking the ball and doing his job. Last night was his 85th appearance, which set the new Braves franchise record, passing Chris Reitsma (2004). He also becomes the first Brave to have two 80-game seasons. He did it in 2007 as well.

If there wasn’t a Chris Carpenter out there, going 16-4 with a 2.30 ERA for the Cardinals coming off Tommy John surgery that cost him most of the last two seasons, then Moylan would be a great candidate for comeback player of the year. Ah, the life of a middle reliever.

Upcoming things at the ballpark:

For the remainder of this homestand, the Braves are holding a drive to raise money for Atlanta flood relief. They started by donating $25,000 from the Braves foundation.

Donations will be collected from 2 ½ hours before the game to the second inning at Monument Grove every game through Sunday. The Braves are asking for monetary donations, gift cards, hygiene items, school supplies, non-perishable foods and baby items.

Tim Hudson will sign autographs Friday from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. at Monument Grove in exchange for book or monetary donations that will go to Clarkdale Elementary in Cobb County, a school affected by the flood.

Fans can bring five new children’s books worth at least $4 apiece or $20 for one autograph or 10 new children’s books or $40 for two autographs.

And tonight the Braves will honor Channel 2 sportscaster Chuck Dowdle, who is retiring after 24 years at the end of the year. He’ll be on the field for a presentation prior to the game at 6:55 p.m.

More from the Ted this afternoon. See you there?

From the Braves News … Probable Pitchers
Hudson
Vazquez
Hanson
Lowe
Jurrjens

Presumably Hudson will get the last start when his turn comes up again.

I thought that last night’s game was the biggest game of the season. Best Fish can do is tie the Rockies. In reality, they’re done.

I doubt that the Fish have completely switched from “we’re eliminated” mode into “let’s play spoiler” mode. I expect them to be flat tonight and tomorrow. Bullpen got used heavily last night. Could be a factor tonight and tomorrow if the Braves can get to the starters early.

Johnson is coming off the flu. We’ll see how much stamina he has. Hope the Braves make him work early. Get him out of the game and go after the bullpen.

The biggest worries for Braves fans right now has to be the bullpen. Six games to go, all in a row. Braves starters need to go seven strong every night. Soriano, Moylan, Gonzalez, and O’Flaherty are going to have to pitch til their arms fall off. I wish that KK would get some work, as that might make the difference between success and failure over the remainder of this run.

The Braves absolutely have the arms to win the next six in a row. I just hope that Bobby makes use of them all.

Biggest pitching performance in recent weeks … Moylan wriggling off the hook in Washington after giving up the lead off triple to Willie Harris. If that run scores, Braves don’t get to extras.

Anders, from the previous blog. If the Braves make the post season, I believe the brass will have the room to push for a bigger budget. The Braves will project as a playoff contender in 2010 with a few right moves. How much bigger a budget management would request, I don’t know. I don’t think they’d make a play for an enormous increase; perhaps enough to re-up Hudson and LaRoche.

Johnson’s going to be tough tonight, but he’s coming off a flu bug. We’ll see.

The Dodgers being 2.5 games up on both The Phillies and Cards for home field is a big problem for the Braves.

LA plays a series against the lowly Padres before finishing the regular season against The Rockies. If they can clinch before that series or after the first game they’ll likely rest their top players and alter their rotation so they can set it for the post season.

feels like 91. for the first time since…91.
granted, there will never be another one like that but what a terrific experience to watch this team rise from the freakin dead (and, yes, I thought they were long gone at least a couple of times) to contend. I wonder just whether they can cut it to one, but if they do I think that’s the point at which the Rockies pucker and fold.

what the braves really need is a blow out or two where they can use medlen and logan for multiple innings.

Why are the Braves only carrying 31 players on the active roster? Couldn’t some of the players on the 40 man roster, like Gregor Blanco or Brandon Jones contribute something right now? At least they could pinch run or play defense in the late innings. Or actually have a chance at getting a pinch hit instead of running No-hit Norton out there. What does it hurt having them on the them, even if they just sit on the bench?

Nice article on the Braves 7 game winning streak Carrol Rogers

While its nice to see this team hammering out win after win like they have been doing lately, I really think that by this team losing to teams like the Reds, Pirates, and Padres the way they did put a bad taste in the fans mouths.. Fans like myself may be thinking that if they go to a game, they could jinx the Braves and thus the Braves will lose out on the WC.. In all reality, the Braves have themselves to blame for a low fan attendance if it keeps up the last 6 games of the season..

I am cheering them on from home here in Wisconsin via MLB Extra Innings, so I hope they keep it up and the Rockies fall on their faces for a change.. If the Braves can get into the playoffs, anything can happen.. Come on Bravos, get it done..

I am so proud of this team. It would have been easy to throw in the towel after the 5 game losing streak.

I also want to commend Bobby Cox for sticking with Jurrjens to face Hermida and Coghlan in the 7th with runners on 1st and 3rd with only one out.

I refuse to talk about playoff hopes because I don’t want a letdown. However when all eyes are on the Rockies, I am also going to keep an eye on the Phillies. You never know.

bullcrap. first of all, the premise of jeff r’s post doesnt make sense, because the braves already have hudson under contract, with a salary decrease. he is making $3.5mil less next year. add that back to what laroche is effectively getting paid by the braves and it equals $6.3 mil. if predictions are right and laroche needs 3 years $25mil, thats $8.3 mil per year, and increase of $2mil, which, with a $96.7 mil payroll is about a 2% raise. and, thats not counting all the other contracts coming off the books.

Frankie Wren…..makes no difference, those things are intangibles and you have to believe those kind of things even out. Umps calls, bang bang plays, bad hops, good hops, etc. Happening late in the season they get scrutinized more but they are no more important than a bad call or whatever in April. Unless they are going to review it like a HR then we just have to let it go. A great catch by Barmes is what it was. The Braves will certainly not miss the playoffs due to that play by any means.

I had LaRoache at about $8 mil and Hudson at $12 mil which I believe is low but whatever. That’s an additional $20 mil. I was being conservative with the 15% or so.

You and I agree I believe. I was just trying to show in numbers to Jeff that he’s pipe dreaming about the Braves adding those kind of $’s to this year payroll budget threshhold. Kabish?

if club exercises 2010 option, Hudson may void & forfeit buyout

That is Hudsons contract. Keep in mind he has an out too. As I’ve said on here before, I wouldn’t mind if he pitches well enough to opt out and signs for longer term with my Mets.

Assuming he pitches well and healthy through the balance of this season I say Hudson ask’s for an extension. If he doesn’t get an offer – he flies. Why risk another season ? It’s just business. Capisce? {:

If there is a play-in game and Vazquez starts I don’t think there is any question over who Bobby will start in the playoffs – it’ll be Derek Lowe. Bobby will always go to the veteran with playoff experience no matter what. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I know Lowe has struggled, but he has a history of rising to the occasion in the post-season.

Perhaps a desperate GM will give him more but if the Braves want him and he wants them then I am sure a contract extension will be in order. Of course, at this point I am not sure the Braves will exercise the option which renders the extension moot.

To those worried about the Dodgers clinching home field and having nothing to play for this weekend — once they clinch (today? hello?), they will rest some starters for a day or two, but they will have the lineup intact and be in playoff tuneup mode by the weekend. I predict regular lineups against the Rockies.

Rock on- I don’t think the Braves would consider extending Hudson at all. It’s going to be all in his court imo. Will he roll the dice expecting a better over all deal from someone? Would they be willing to give the draft compensation he would cost as well? That’s why I said his final couple of starts are crucial to him.

I don’t think there’s much pitching competition on the market this off season which would benefit Hudson.

DAP, Anders… correct me if I’m wrong, management has to exercise Hudson’s option to retain him. Right? Exercising Hudson’s option, with Kawakami on the payroll, makes for more dollars for pitching, correct? A portion of Hundson’s salary this year was covered by insurance, if I recall. A full year’s income for Hudson (paid by the team) and Kawakami’s contract increases cost? That’s not to mention retaining or replacing Gonzo and Soriano, right?

LaRoche would definitely boost payroll, if signed for the rumored 3-year $25 million contract.

To clarify my point, post season for the Braves means higher revenues now and next year, provided they take the steps necessary to keep the club in contention. I think that McGuirk and company make a play for a bigger budget, based on a post season. I’m not suggesting that management will write a blank check.

Plus, the Braves making the post season, and being considered contenders next year, ups their value. That would have to be attractive to Liberty Media.

Anders….too many scenarios to uncover just yet. I don’t think the Braves are paying him his 12 million option and then try to sign him to an extension during the year. With KK looking every bit as good as Hudson (if not better)the Braves lose nothing by letting Hudson walk other than 1 million. They can save the difference in KK’s and Hudson’s contract and sign a free agent bat along with the money saved by letting the non-producers/FA’s go i.e. KJ, Church, Anderson, Norton.

The rise of Vazquez has put Hudson’s future with Atlanta in a whole new light. If Hudson wants to stay in Atlanta he will restructure a contract extension at 10 mil or less per year. Of course the Angels and Rockies are expressing a lot of interest in Hudson over the last month so the Braves may get outbid anyway.

DAP

jeff rExercising Hudson’s option, with Kawakami on the payroll, makes for more dollars for pitching, correct? A portion of Hundson’s salary this year was covered by insurance, if I recall.

no, because the braves are already paying hudson and kawakami this year (both have decreasing salaries next season) and although the braves probably received some money back on an insurance claim for hudson, we dont know how much and it is not factored into the bottom line that we all use.

also, you cant say laroche would boost payroll, because dont know where else payroll will be shed. anderson, norton, soriano, gonzalez are all free agents. church and johnson are non-tender candidates.

Father time is ticking on Hudson. He see’s that the Braves have arms on all sides. If he thinks he can strike now and get 2 or 3 years I say he goes. If he waits another year he could get hurt again or the Braves just might decide they have enough and don’t need him and he hits the market anyway but a year older and with more wear and tear on the wing. If the Braves are considering picking up Hudson’s option, then they’re also thinking about a contract extension. If the club is convinced he’s fully recovered, there’s no reason to believe he can’t pitch effectively for another three years, given the track record of pitchers after TJ surgery.

If they don’t think he’s recovered, they’ll let him go. (Payroll considerations may force them to let him go anyway, but that’s another discussion.)

If the Braves make it in, anyone who watched Bobby enough in the playoffs knows he’s handing the ball to Derek Lowe in Game 1, no matter what Lowe’s done in September. I remember back to 2005 against the Astros. We all know what Brian McCann after being called up that season. So who got the start behind the dish in Game 1? Johnny Estrada, of course. Also, Ryan Langerhans hit about .370 in September that year. So who got the start in left field in Game 1? Brian Jordan, of course.

Bobby is loyal to the veterans. And for the record, the Braves lost Game 1 10-5.

Will McCann get a day off some time this week if the Braves are still in it. I wouldn’t think so, but he looks a bit tired and David Ross has been a great fill in. By the way this Braves bulpen can be the best in Baseball no doubt, maybe second to the Dodgers. It’s to bad Raffy and Mike are FA’s, and I would think they’re going to get a big payday.

What will they do next year. They should make Moylan the closer and keep Mike Gonzalez as a setup guy. And they should sign another FA like Latroy Hawkins, Rafael Betancourt, Brandon Lyon, or Takashi Saito. They won’t lose draft picks given they will recover them with either Gonzo or Soriano. And they should trade Kawakami for prospects, a third base prospect perhaps a Mat Gamel could be a logical target.

I don’t want the Twins to overtake the Tigers.

Here’s the thing on Jeff:

Jeff Francoeur has stated on several occasions that he’s found a new lease on life with the Mets since being acquired in a July trade with the Braves, and wants to stick around.

Now, he’s openly lobbying for a contract. He told Newsday he wants to be a regular. “Francoeur, 25, is so comfortable with the Mets that he wants to sit down with Omar Minaya this offseason to talk about a multiyear contract that would buy out his remaining arbitration and keep him here for an extended period,” notes the article. “If Francoeur can be this happy — and productive — during the worst of times, that might not be a bad idea. ‘I’d love for that to happen,’ Francoeur said. ‘I think there’s a lot to be said when you feel like you can pencil a guy in for 158 games and not have to worry about rightfield.’”

With all due lack-of-respect for Frenchy’s OBP, maybe he’s got a point. Penciling in anybody consistently might be something the Mets should consider.

Lobbying for players and now lobbying for a contract. I’d say he feels pretty comfortable in his new shoes. Heh. Sign him up, Mets.

Anders, I’d love to have Wagner closing out games, but I just think he’s going to settle for somewhere around the neighborhood of 8 million, same with Jose Valverde. If the Braves have money why not, but I would not think they have the money to keep Laroche, Hudson, and sign Wagner.

What I would do is sign Huddy to an extension to a 3 year deal worth 27 million, Laroche to a 3 years 24 million, Mike Gonzalez to 2 years 8 million, and Latroy Hawkins, or Rafael Betancourt to 2 year deals worth 6-7 million, and trade Kawakami for some prospects, hopefully a 3B prospect like Mat Gamel of the Brewers(who have two good 3B right now and both of them are rookies, and they need starting pitching)

I’m so enjoying this, it’s Christmas in September for us Braves fans. Every game the rest of the season is a playoff game, virtually no margin for error exists.

If the Braves can whack Johnson around tonight the heat is on the Rockies. They get to see the game go final long before their’s is over. They are already looking behind them, which is a mistake because something is gaining on them.

I just read on the Rob Neyer ESPN chat that photos showed that Clint Barmes didn’t actually catch the ball in that game-ending double play on Sunday vs the Cardinals. Can’t believe that I’m just finding out about this now. Here are those photos: http://rockiesphotos.blogspot.com/2009/09/amazing-catch.html

Before, I respected the Rockies for their hard-nosed style of ball, and I wouldn’t say that I “hated” them as I do other teams, like the Mets, Phillies, or Astros (still hanging onto the 2005 NLDS). Now, after seeing that they won the game on what was a non-play, for them to get into the playoffs — especially if they wind up winning it by one game (since we could’ve wound up gaining a game on them on Sunday) — I’ll hate them forever.

The Braves need a big time performance from Tim Hudson tonight. Hudson performing like a big game pitcher will only make reinforce that Bobby Cox made the right decision on having him return as a starter (it is well known on here that I was in favor of Hudson returning as a short reliever).

The reason I brought this up is because Kawakami had a knack for coming up big against the ace of the other team. We need Tim Hudson to do the same today.

If the Braves can pull this one out today, then I’ll stand by my declaration that we will wont lose another game in the regular season.

SpazzHH………sure, Hudson’s 2010 option is a “mutual option”. However, when it comes down to it, the option is on the Braves. If the Braves were to pick up Hudson’s 2010 option……do you really think that Tim Hudson is going to even consider declining the 2010 option? I seriously doubt that Hudson will be able to command anywhere close to $12 mil for 2010 if he was a free agent.

I’m not saying that Hudson isnt a good pitcher. However, he just came off elbow surgery. No team is going to give him a big contract. If Braves pick up Hudson’s 2010 option and Hudson has a good year for the Braves in 2010…….then I can see Hudson scoring big on the free agent market. But not this winter.

So in essence, in all reality, the Braves hold the option because Hudson is not turning down $12 mil for 2010, if given the choice.

Almost forgot to mention this: I asked about Hudson’s option today, and found out it’s not a mutual option, but a club option. Yes, they fully intend to exercise it, barring some unexpected turn of events.

That would give the Braves potentially one of the most formidable rotations in baseball, featuring five from this group: Hudson, Lowe, Jurrjens, Vazquez, Kawakami and Hanson.

(OK, I CHEATED and came back to correct this, after somehow forgetting to mention Jurrjens initially. Just an oversight, folks, nothing more.)

Anders

DAP – This may just be a technicality but I believe only the Braves have the “option” on Hudson’s deal. What Hudson has is the right to “void” the deal if the Braves pick up his 2010 option (He forfeits his $1mm buyout by voiding). So technically he doesn’t have an option to pitch for the Braves but he does have an out if he chooses not to.

This is according to Cot’s MLB Contracts which I believe are reliable.DOB seemed to just be addressing the Option component of the deal.

Some Brewers/Rockies stuff:

Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10. Rockies lead season series 3-0.

Probable pitching matchups, with stats for last 3 starts:
Chris Narveson (3-0, 2.63) v. Jason Marquis (0-3, 7.71)
Jeff Suppan (1-2, 5.40) v. Jason Hammel (1-2, 4.19)
Manny Parra (2-0, 2.51) v. Aaron Cook (1-2, 9.58)

Narveson’s been excellent as a starter. Suppan and Parra? Not so much. But Parra did hold the Phils to 2 ER in 7 IP in his last start. Suppan has a career line of 6-1, 3.40 against the Rockies. At Coors Field, he’s 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA.

Marquis has been awful lately. Hammel’s been okay. Cook’s been okay, really, except for one horrible start recently (7 ER in 2 IP, I think). He’s also recently off the DL, so who knows…

Some thoughts on tonight’s game:

Obviously, in a critical run like this one where every single game is important, you don’t want to lose a single game, and tonight’s game is definitely a big one. That being said, I don’t think the season ends tonight if the Braves lose and Rockies win and we end up being 3 GB. Johnson’s a tough pitcher, and Hudson’s been okay since his return, but Johnson’s got the edge. Looking at the remaining 5 games, I really like the Braves chances — tomorrow night we’re facing Nolasco, who can be tough, but we’ve got Vazquez going, so you definitely favor the Braves there. Don’t know who the Nationals will trot out there, but Lannan is their best starting pitcher, and he’s pitching tomorrow night, so the Braves won’t see him. Another sweep of the Nats is definitely possible.

(By the way, I just saw that only one Nationals pitcher has reached triple-digits in strikeouts this season, and that’s Livan Hernandez — with 100.)

With the Rockies facing the Dodgers in L.A., and us playing the Nats, I still like our chances, even if we stumble tonight and the Rockies win. We’re still very much alive and have a shot coming down the stretch.

All of that being said, I think that the Braves have to like their chances going tonight. They’ve already faced Josh Johnson twice this year, and each time he’s given up 3 runs (1-1). With their performance this year against other teams’ aces, you know that the Braves have gotta be thinking “we’ve done well against other aces, bring this one on, we know we can take him.” Plus, you’ve got Huddy going, and he’s had good career numbers against the Fish, and he’s gotta love this type of atmosphere.

You’re right. The Rockies could actually lose more than 2 games, in which case the Braves could have a little wiggle room.

If you ask me…I think your dreaming…there’s no way Atlanta wins everygame they have left and Colorado loses two.

It ain’t gunna happen

That’s fine if it doesn’t. We’re one of a handful of teams still making noise in the last week of the season. I’ve enjoyed the heck out of this one. From Loaf to MFIKY to the Frenchy and KJ Chronicles to Tommy Hanson and Vazquez and JJ and the surprising Diaz and Prado and everything in between. Even if they lose every one of the remaining games this has been fun and the future looks bright. 8)

Anders-What you don’t seem to realize is that if we keep Hudson and trade Kawakami or keep Kawakami and let Hudson walk, we will still have the best starting rotation in the NL and probably in all of MLB next year.

Should the Mets sign Hudson they will still have a pretty substandard rotation with two pitchers coming off of a serious enough injury to shut them down for months of 2009.

Where did I say differently about the Braves? I was saying that I’d like to have Hudson if he’s healthy. I then gave an argument as to how I think it could happen. Why do you always have to knock the Mets to make a point?

I haven’t compared pitching staffs all day or said one negative comment about the Braves staff. Why would I? I can acknowledge a strength in others. Something lost to some on here. Know what I mean?

That was such a dramatic, dynamic, heart-breaking moment, that people tend to forget that the first out of the inning was a blown call at first base.

So, it looks like all three outs recorded in the ninth by the Rockies were not really outs. I know you cannot give teams extra outs, but, take away all three outs in an inning. Mighty tough to score.

Yea, its easy for Frenchy to play for the lousy Muts, no expectations on him or the team. Can he hit .300+ once they’re picked to win the division next season (like they are every season). I doubt it, he caved under pressure here and he’ll do it there. Hopefully he does sign a big contract with them, makes it harder for them to sign good players later. GO BRAVES!

Great to see the Braves playing so awesome!! Hope we can keep this going and over take the Rockies.
Speaking of the offseason
Do we have enough payroll to sign Hudson to a new 2-3 yr deal at a lower hometown cost
Along with signing Roachy?
We wont be bringing back Loaf, Gonzo, Soriano. So that means Diaz McLouth Church will be the outfield until Heyward is called up mid season.
A big hole at closer, can Moylan do it? or do we sign someone like Wagner that wants to close and with his injury history and age he should be a bargin. I see Gonzo and Soriano being offered alot more than the braves would so there most likely out of the equation.
If we dont resign Roachy, who plays first? and who will supply power. Looking at the free agent 1b’s he looks to be the best on the market, so he will get alot of attention definitly since he has been like a second half MVP by the way he playing.
Alot of Questions and work for Wren do handle. Only thing we know is that the Braves have a top Starting Staff.
Closer? 1B? Power or Speed? Schafer? Heyward?

I agree…. I wish the Ted was packed, but it’s not.

I have a prediction, although I doesn’t make me proud to make it;

If the Braves pull off this miracle and make the playoffs….. you’ll be able to buy walk up tickets at the Ted on playoff game days. It’s a shame, but Atlanta ain’t a great baseball town.

They’ve been trying to protect that arm, coming off Tommy John surgery, and they want to sign him to a multi-year contract too.

Carroll, I think I read that his agent wanted a contract between that of Sabathia and Burnett when he hits free agency? Realistically, something along the lines of Greinke’s deal would make some sense. Just not sure if Johnson would agree to it.

Sad. Sad. Sad. I’ve said all along, that the team needed to win to bring the fans back in. Which would allow LM to contemplate upping payroll. My take was that with the horrid/mediocre play of the team the past few years, the team didn’t deserve to have big crowds at the games.

In all fairness to the team, and the way they’ve been playing since late June, the city of Atlanta doesn’t deserve this team.

Pathetic.

“On Mark Bradley’s blog today, people that live in Atlanta were using the excuse that they have jobs and Turner Field isn’t exactly convienantly located near their offices and homes. I say BS!”-TnBrian

Turner Field and Fulton County have always been in the same place so the location didn’t stop the fans before so I doubt it is now. I keep reminding those out of towners that quite a few metro-atlantans have been affected by this flooding situation. Weekdays during the school year when you are just as much a regional team as a local team has a lot to do with it. It is what it is right now. Complaining on this blog where most of the fans who frequent are diehards isn’t going to help it.

Atlanta has always been a fickle crowd when it comes to the Braves but I gotta say that the current economy and people tightening down on the budgets is playing a big role in deciding whether or not to come out to the TED.

It’s not so much the price of the ticket but add in the cost of parking and even just a single soft drink and a hotdog or popcorn or whatever and your looking at close to 100 buck for 4 people. Not saying it’s a lot but it’s still 100 bucks so…………………

Remember that just b/c you can afford to go doesn’t mean everyone can or will decide to spend their money in that way. It’s not just b/c nobody wants to be there.

There is 75,000 people where I live, and usually there is anywhere between 3000 and 6000 people at the frickin’ D-League basketball games. 15,000 people at a MLB baseball game in the midst of a pennant race is embarrassing for the city of Atlanta. What would be too funny is if the Braves get into the playoffs and MLB issues blackouts for the games.

The Braves are down in Georgia
Looking for a Wild Card to steal
The Rockies are in a bind cause we WERE way behind
and now we’re making them squeal
When they came across this Braves team playin’ and playin’ it hot
Then Rockies saw what was happening and said boys let me tell ya what
You’re playin pretty good ball but give the Rocks our due, we bet a Wild Card slot cause we think we’re better than you
Vasquez said well my name’s Javy here with Hanson, JJ, and Timmy too and we’ll take that bet and you’re gonna regret cause we’re the best there’s ever been
Resin up that bat and smack that ball hard cause the Rockies are out west and they are tryin’ to take the card and if you win you get that playoff spot that’s worth it weight in gold but if you lose the Rockies get your soul………
The Rockies said we’ll start this show but clunker flew from Marquis’ hand as he let the ball go and Miller smacked two out and as the ball maid an evil hiss and the Brew Crew joined in and it became obvious
When the Rockies finished, the Braves said pretty good try ole boys but sit right there and scoreboard watch as show you how it’s done
Chipper resin up your bat and Esco hit hard, cause the Rockies play out west and they are tryin to steal the Card, and if you win you get the playoff spot that’s worth its weight in gold, but if you lose the Rockies get your soul…
When the season finished the Rockies knew that they’d been beat and they laid that Wild Card banner down at Bobby’s feet….Bobby said come on back if you ever want to try again cause 14 in a row proves we’re the best there’s EVER BEEN!!!!!!!!

Did you read Mark Bradley’s blog about fans in Atlanta not caring about the braves and all the reasons why…?

This is what got me…I remember watching this game for 5 hours as the post describes below

“If the Braves come up one game short, we can all look back to August 21, against the Marlins. I particularly made note of it for future reference. After that game is when I completely gave up on the Braves. I have not watched since then, and live out of state so cannot attend. After a long 2 1/2 hr. rain delay the Braves were losing 5-3 and it had been stopped in the middle of the ninth. When it was finally restarted and the Braves came up to bat it was very obvious what they were doing. It was in the 2AM area and they knew if they tied it up they could be there a long time. All they wanted to do was to go home. First batter up was CJ and he did not take any pitches even after a long delay to see if their pitcher had his control. He swung at a pitch way outside and softly lined it to third. Next Brian McCann who normally takes pitches and fouls a lot off, took none, and stuck out on a pitch way outside. Next LaRoche did take a pitch but then lined a hit to right and for some unknown reason tried to stretch it into a 2B, even though his run did not matter being 2 behind at that juncture. He would have been just as well off at first. He was thrown out by a mile. It was very obvious they only wanted to go home. Two comments by Joe Simpson verified my opinion. I have direct feed with no commercials and after the cut away he said, “well how do you like that”. I knew exactly what he was thinking. He even commented after CJ’s tap out, “I don’t know what his hurry is”. After staying up that late and seeing them give up like that turned me off, and I have not watched since. I predict they will come up one game short, and I hope they will all think back to that game. If they do get lucky and make the playoffs, being an avid Braves fan, I will watch but only because of my sincere allegiance. They really broke my heart that night.”

HOUSTON (AP)–Former major leaguer Chuck Knoblauch has been charged with assaulting his common-law wife.

A judge set Knoblauch’s bond at $10,000 after he appeared in court Tuesday. According to a criminal complaint, Knoblauch’s wife told police he hit her in the face and then choked her at their Houston home on Friday.

Knoblauch’s attorney did not immediately return a telephone call Tuesday.

The 41-year-old former infielder is a Houston native and a four-time All-Star who played for the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals from 1991-02.

Knoblauch was one of more than 80 players who were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs in the 2007 Mitchell Report on baseball’s steroids era. Knoblauch later acknowledged using performance enhancers.

Chuck Knoblauch, clearly a winner in the game of life. F him. Cheating, loser piece of $***.

I made that point a long time ago during midseason

Our pitchers suck at holding runner on and keeping them honest on the Basepaths, which makes B-Macc look bad, furthermore everyone is quick to assume that B-Macc Sucks at throwing out baserunners, which isn’t the case because our pitchers have to rank among worst in the league as far as holding runners goes

Steve From OH, there was a photography course that was part of the program, and I never had any interest in it. It was required. The way I figured, the only thing I would ever use it for would be to take slides of my artwork. LOL. Then one opportunity led to another, and it just fell into my lap. I pretty much do all the sports photography for all the local high schools and jr. high schools, in and around my community, along with wedding photography and senior portraits and what not. Other than the weddings and senior photos, the rest isn’t too incredbily creative. Spend most of my time at my computer working on photoshop. Which is why I’ve got endless hours to blog. I just always had an eye for looking through the camera.

Don’t particularly like shooting the weddings, but not too many people are gonna gripe on making that kind of money for a “day’s work”, so I don’t turn them down. My wife gets pissed when I choose to go play a gig and make a few hundred bucks and turn down doing a wedding for a few grand. But I don’t hunt or fish, so the band is the hobby, and a guy has to have a break from work, right?

Ironically, I’ve probably spent 10 times as many hours in my lifetime working at being a good guitar player than I have working at my business that I make my living at. What’s cool, is that my kids are into it too, so eventually they can help out and expand the business, and someday take it over.

Yeah, catcher’s CS% is like W/L or ERA for pitchers…it’s not entirely up to the catcher. I don’t place a lot of stock into it because of the pitcher’s impact on it. Gotta go off scouting reports and the like to really get a good feel on catcher’s defense. I personally won’t make any observations becase I don’t really know what I’m looking for compared to a professional.

With regard to the attendance – it’s easy if you live inside the perimeter to get to games. But, if you live more than 25 miles out of the perimeter and have to work the next day, it’s a lot more difficult. Generally, if I get to go to a weeknight game, I have to leave by the stretch in order to get home before 11 or so. Now, Friday, I’m not going to worry about it. But most any other night of the week, I have a real problem getting there and getting home at a decent hour in order to get up at 5 to get ready for work.

If the guys make it to the playoffs (and I BELIEVE), and if I could get a ticket to a playoff game, I would take the next day off just so I could go.

If the Braves shop Vazquez and keep Hudson that will be a huge mistake
While Vazquez is going out and pitching his heart out, Hudson is walking everyone then giving up RBI doubles to a opposing pitcher when that pitcher is down 0-2 in the count.. Not only is Tim Hudson on the verge of wasting our win streak, he is single handily blowing away our chances at the playoffs.. The Braves losing this game wont be the end of the world. This was the one game that I was looking at in the last 13 games of the season that I felt that the Braves could lose. By winning our previous 7 games, we gave ourselves a little breathing room. However, if we lose this game, we HAVE to win the remaining 5 to have any shot.

Still, this game is far from over. Johnson looks like he is tiring. Plus that Marlins bullpen isnt exactly shutting people down. At most Johnson will last 6 innings, which will give us 3 cracks at that Marlins bullpen.

If Tim Hudson accomplished one thing tonight, its that he screwed up chemistry with this team.. We have been playing lights out for a while now and when it gets down to crunch time, he falters miserably.. Giving up big hits to their pitcher, giving up home runs because he get hit his spots.. You knew he was in trouble early when he was giving up hits in the air, and their outs were in the air.. He is a ground ball pitcher and he didn’t have it.. You expect more out of a high priced veteran, but the truth is, I would rather have Jurrgens or Hanson on the mound any day over Tim Hudson.. Let him go cost another team a boat load of money.. By allowing him to walk, we can resign LaRoche and get us a LF bat..

It takes no genius to know that Mc and Chipper are having the worst season both of them will ever have.
