David O’Brien……….true, the Braves are 50-30 since June 28th. However when you take away the past few weeks of “excellent play” (13-2 record since Sept. 10)………then the Braves record from June 28th-Sept 9th was 37-28. While that is a decent record…..the Braves had the ability to put up a MUCH BETTER record during that time. I can think of 5 games that Bobby Cox mismanaged that would have turned the 37-28 record into a 42-23 record (which would qualify as playing “great baseball”).

Here are the 5 games that the Braves played well enough to win (particularly starting pitching wise)……yet due to Bobby Cox’s mismanaging….the Braves were able to snatch defeat from the thrill of victory:

1 & 2…..those 2 Rockies games right before the All-Star Break.

3. The Saturday Fox game after the All-Star Break against the Mets where Bobby went through his whole bench in an insane manner………and used the other team’s secret weapon (Greg Norton), to once again fail to come through in the clutch.

4. In the following series, the last game of the Giants series. Bobby totally mismanaged that horrific 8th inning.

5. The Houston game where Tommy Hanson was strolling through 8 innings, under 100 pitches, and Bobby takes him out.

My point all along has been “why settle for 50-30 when the team is capable of going 55-25″? I recall you giving me grief right after the All-Star Break when I stated my disappointment with our 6-2 home stand against the Mets and Giants. That home stand had “8-0″ written all over it. It was ours for the taking. However, Bobby’s managerial mistakes cost us dearly in those 2 losses.

While many on here are happy to settle for good or decent……..I actually see the Braves as being capable of doing more. I see ability and talent. It just has to be managed right…….and the personnel that we have offensively has to be used right. Having Greg Norton on the 25 man roster before September really hurt the Braves. Basically, the only thing he can do is draw the occasional walk. He cant hit, run, steal a base, or play defense. Kelly Johnson can at least steal a base and play somewhat decent defense.

I believe that Frank Wren did a fantastic job rebuilding this roster. The Braves are winning the past few weeks DESPITE Bobby Cox, not because of him. Sure the players like him. However in times where the Braves need a Bobby to “manage” the game (instead of managing the clubhouse)……..Bobby continues to be a liability for the Braves.

Going into the season, I would have been happy with 85-90 wins. However, with the way our starting pitching totally did a 360 from last season………expectations change.

Gil In Mechanicsville………….your 7:38pm posting misses the point. Martin Prado and Matt Diaz have been on the roster all season long. Bobby Cox choose to keep Francoeur and Kelly in the starting line-up for 3 months (before finally benching Kelly for Prado). Diaz didnt get a chance to play full time until Frank Wren traded Francoeur.

In mid-May, it was apparent that a chance needed to be made at second and right field. Frank Wren pulled a rabbit out of the hat when he traded from Nate McLouth. While I’m not totally down on Jordan Schafer……….he was simply over matched the first 2 months of the season.

Frank Wren helped Bobby Cox by acquiring some better players. However I blame Bobby Cox for mismanaging the first 3 months of the season by sticking with BUMS who needed the boot. And who can forget about Jeff Bennett? Lucky for us that Jeff Bennett slammed his fist in the wall………AND……….Buddy Carlyle developing diabetes (I say that not to wish ill will on Carlyle…..however it saved Braves fans 4 months of seeing him stink up the place). Those 2 injuries forced Bobby Cox to not have them to turn to anymore in the bullpen. Jeff Bennett and Buddy Carlyle….along with Greg Norton……have no business being on a Major League roster.

RHR,

I was born in Decatur, Ga. Went to UGA. I am alarmed when I see a player laying motionless on the field or Ice or Court. At this point my wishes are for that player’s health. I do not consider him/her a demigod, but a person. My allegiance to my team becomes meaningless.

White blood HIV person,

the first 9 games the Braves and Phillies did count, and while you’re looking at the history books, take a look at how the Phillies started the season.
they were struggling.

Now, look at this Braves team, as currently constructed, the one that has won 50 of its last 80 games, and look in that 80 game stretch, and note which team is responsible for 6 of those 30 losses.

It’s the Phillies. We have had 3 very big series against them the last 2 months of the season, and in each one, we lost 2 of 3. That is important, and is more representative of the Braves’ current performance against the Phillies then the 9 games played early in the season.

The Braves have a very good team right now. But, the Phillies are better. They are outplaying them over-all and head 2 head.

I’m glad we won those 7 games in the first half of the season against Philly, but that doesn’t change the fact that Philly dominated the Braves down the stretch of the season.

David O’Brien……..your 7:45pm posting fails to address why it took Bobby Cox SO FREAKING LONG to make changes to the lineup (particularly in regards to Kelly and Francoeur being replaced by Prado and Diaz)? Back in May, I was pushing for more playing time for Diaz in right field.

If Infante had not gotten hurt in late May, I would have loved to have seen Bobby Cox insert Infante at 2nd. However, Prado’s clutch play has made that a moot point.

Frank Wren retooling the roster definitely helped. However Bobby could have softened the early blow by benching Francoeur and Kelly MUCH SOONER.

Also, Bobby wasnt exactly thrilled with Tom Glavine not being called up.

I’m still waiting for you to do an article on Frank Wren’s chance for winning “Executive of the Year” Award.

Tomahawkin (September 26th, 2009 4:21 pm): ””Why is everone Bashing Mitchell…?

“Dude watches just about every game and blogs so he has a right to have BF’s on here as much as he pleases,”

Remember what I said earlier about “rights” and “responsibilities”, BF? If he’s gonna exercise his right to say something stupid, he’s gotta be responsible to take or leave any criticism he receives. (Eg, ”God, I’m tired of rain. I wish it would never rain, ever.”)

If you don’t like what he says about Bobby’s bad coaching strategies, the team playing flat, etc, just ignore it….”

It isn’t necessarily a question of “like” or “don’t like” – it’s most usually “agree” or “disagree”. If you disagree with something someone says, you’ve got a right to say so and (imo) a responsibility to say why. Again, it doesn’t have to be either “like” or “don’t like” — don’t have to take it so personally.

”He is supportive of his boys and that’s what It’s supposed to be about. “

No, he’s not (neither are you, btw – “LVP”?) Do you even read his comments? (Eg, ”Chipper shouldn’t be batting third. It just doesn’t make sense. If he’s even going to play, and we might after all be better off without him in there, bat him 8th.”)
(Eg, ”God, Kelly Johnson sucks. It needs to be said and I did just that. Didn’t I?”)
(Eg, ”God, Norton can’t hit s***.”)
(Eg, ”How about we just not use Gonzalez for the rest of the season? Is that possible?”)
(Eg, ”Chipper is about as effective as Reid Gorecki at this point.”)
(Eg, ”That is pathetic. I don’t get what people see in Matt Diaz.”)
(Eg, ”Still hate Matt Diaz.”)
(Eg, ”What the hell is up with Yunel these days? What a terrible at-bat.”)
(Eg, ”Matt, where does he have to hit it for you to score this time?”)
(Eg, ”Why is Chipper even hitting? What is that doing for us? He can’t hit s***.”)
(Eg, ”Ah yes, who better than Manny Acosta.”)
(Eg, ”Manny Acosta has been terrible this year.”)
(Eg, ”I still hate Matt Diaz. Occasionally he gets a break but I wll always hate him. I can’t help it.”)
(Eg, ”I’d say Soriano is just about done for ‘09.”)

So, you call all that “supportive”? (I suppose it all depends on who “his boys” are, huh?)

”As long as he isn’t hostile, give the dude a break”

Mitchell (September 26th, 2009 3:53 pm): ”What kind of @$$hole sits behind homeplate to wave to the camera? What a f*ing @$$hole. God, I’d like to dump a beer on that guy’s head.”
(September 20th, 2009 2:39 pm): ”Give me a f*ing break. Who is that crazy b**** who keeps screaming every time they get a hit. This is BS.”
(September 20th, 2009 2:50 pm): ”GD it. F.”
(September 20th, 2009 5:10 pm): ”Why do you swing at that you f*ing idiot?!”
(September 20th, 2009 5:16 pm): ”GD WTF”
(September 20th, 2009 6:59 pm): ”F this blog. F***ing pisses me off.”
(September 18th, 2009 8:07 pm): ”GF***ingD it! WTF!”
(September 18th, 2009 10:13 pm): ”I f***ing hate this guy.”

Hmmm – exactly what do you mean by “hostile”?

PS: ”so he has a right to have BF’s on here”. So he does, so he does – well, at least he’s got you, BF.

He’s got you.

Every team in the majors blows games that “they should have won” over a 162 game season. The fact that some of you can blame Bobby for a few random losses is absurd. You don’t think the Yanks, Angels, Phils, Cards have lost games this year that the managers strategy was questioned???? Give me a break! I’m glad Bobby’s coming back for one more year and I think Wren deserves GM of the year!!!

P. W. Hjort………….your 7:53pm posting is typical of how many on here cant “think outside the box”. Critical thinking hurts dudes like you.

Let me explain it to you in this way:

Going into the Rockies series right before the All-Star Break, the Braves had a 41-43 record while the Rockies had a 45-39 record……..which put us 4 games behind them in the Wild Card standings. We split the series 2-2 with them…….which put our record at 43-45 and the Rockies 47-41, still 4 games behind them.

However, if we did not give away the 2 games we lost in that series…..our record would have stood at 45-43……..while the Rockies would have also been at 45-43, meaning that we would be tied with them in the Wild Card Standings at the time.

So, tell me again, how is that not losing those 2 games a 4 game swing?

beekay………..I recognize that all teams lose games that they should win. There is a difference between players playing bad and making mistakes……….and a manager blowing games by refusing to deviate from his ingrained way of thinking.

Tommy Hanson was rolling along in that Houston game after 8 innings (98 pitches), while both Soriano and Gonzalez were going through tough stretches. In that situation, it should have been a no brainer to keep Hanson in there to finish the game.

Its the pattern of managing that bothers me when it comes to Bobby. Sticking with BUMS who SUCK A$$ has kept the Braves from soaring this year (until the past few weeks).

So, tell me again, how is that not losing those 2 games a 4 game swing?

Because you’ve doubly accounted for the Braves losses. You’ve taken 2 losses and said, “Well, we lose two games in the standings because we lost two games and we lost two games in the standings because we didn’t win two games”. It doesn’t work that way.

I believe that series went Braves win, Braves loss, Braves win, Braves loss. Imagine if they’d gone win win in the first two, making their record 43-43, Rockies 45-41. Two back. Then the Braves lose two. Four back. It’s a two game difference. You’re comparing “Where the Braves could’ve been after the series” to “Where they ended up after the series”. When, in reality, it’s only appropriate to compare “Where the Braves were before the series” to “Where they ended up after the series”.

By bringing in two games that are irrelevant to the discussion (the two wins in Colorado), you’ve messed with the accounting. The two wins should be a constant, not a variable.

Braves4Life (September 26th, 2009 3:18 pm): “Does anyone know why Dave O’Brien is acting so arrogant? Jeez man I am sure that “Nick” (the guy you criticized) has a job where he can’t play at baseball stadiums all day. Let me apologize on his behalf: I’m sorry Dave that I am not more knowledgeable about baseball; but the blog I read’s author chooses to bash his fans rather than talk about baseball.”

Oh, I’m sure DOB was just trying to cover for me while I was away for a bit.

;-)

PS: DOB has fans?!? Talk about severe cognitive dissonance.

For those folks winging about the sweep by Cincinatti, since August 21, Cincy is 21-10, and they’re winning tonight (22-10). The thing that really mars that number (and should infuriate Braves fans) is that, subsequent to the sweep of the Braves, the Reds were swept in four games by the Rockies.

Go figure what kind of “swing” that has been in the standings. If the Braves don’t pull this thing out, I would contend that that seven games, more than anything, made the difference in the season.

I love it when they dance on the sidelines. Last year they’d play Soulja Boy and Knowshon would always be doing the dance and they’d throw him on the big screen
