Who knew……….did you even watch the first 3 months of the season? Did you see Bobby’s refusal to bench Kelly and Francoeur?

Sure, I’m not “privy” to how Bobby Cox’s mind works. However, it doesnt take a rocket science to figure out who a manager would “rather” see playing when he benches a player in a 13 for 26 stretch……..just so he can give his boy Francoeur “some at-bats”. Diaz basically had to go 23 for 45 in order to secure his spot in the lineup. Dude is a lifetime .313 hitter in 1,263 at-bats. Yet Frank Wren basically had to take the decision away from Bobby by trading Francoeur.

I pay attention to the actions of a manager. Over time, the actions paint a picture.

Dense, why do you keep referring to the Braves in terms of “WE”, do you think you are part of the team or something?

Who knew…………I’ve been a Braves fan since 1982. I’ve paid my dues as a fan.

The reason why I’m critical (even though we are playing better) is because I felt since June that we’ve had the potential to play great baseball. With our pitching, we are capable of winning 10 games in a row. I felt that Bobby’s style of managing was holding the Braves back. Instead of preaching the “let’s take 2 of 3 crap”………I felt that the Braves should have went into certain series with the “let’s try and sweep these guys” mentality. Plus it’s hard to sustain a winning streak without getting a key pinch hit or two (which is asking WAY TOO MUCH of Greg Norton to deliver).

I see the Braves playing with a “sense of urgency” now. They KNOW that they have to sweep these guys. They know that these are winnable games that CANNOT be given away, especially to the lowly Nationals.

If we win tomorrow, then the Florida series isnt a “must sweep”. Sure, it would be nice to see the Braves take all 3 from the Fish. However, the Fish are a competitive team. Taking 2 of 3 from them would not be the end of the world. As long as the Rockies dont sweep the Brewers, then we’ll still be alive if we only win 2 of 3 from the Fish.

However, if we give away one tomorrow to the Nationals……then the Marlins series becomes a “must sweep”. We are talking about “margin of error” here.

I have faith in this current bunch of Braves.

Tomahawkin……….I totally agree with your 6:46pm posting. We should have been playing this way since late June/early July. Those 2 games that Bobby Cox mismanaged in Colorado right before the All-Star Break could very well cost us a spot in the playoffs. Along with those 2 games that Bobby bumbled away right after the All-Star Break against the Mets and Giants (you know, that 6-2 homestand that many on here were absolutely “giddy” about. They were happy to settle for 6-2……..when in fact we should have finished 8-0 on that homestand).

Many on here are “content” with good. However, why settle for good when being great is obtainable? Our starting pitching (along with some offensive moves that Bobby was too stubborn to make earlier in the season)……should have catapulted the Braves into a division title.

I feel that it is a “crime shame” (despite some of you ripping me on the phrase, I’m going to stick with it) that the Braves had to wait this late in the season to play this way. I saw the ability to play at this level in June.

P-LENTZ, TOMAHAWKIN, the only good thing I can think of that makes me happy with Bobby’s return is that I’m sure Javy Vazquez will sign any kind of contract to stay in Atlanta, even if cox is gone after next year. Newspapers here in PR interview him frequently and he will do anything to stay in Atlanta. Last night I asked, at 8 million Javy and Kawanami at 7, who do you think Wren will keep?
Eventhough, I still believe Wren may not resign Hudson and take those dollars so he can really build the team HE WANTS. Agree or not?

It’s hilarious reading some of the comments here(or should I say obtuse comments). Anybody ever play organized baseball here? Seriously. We lost a lot of winnable ballgames. Ah yeah that’s probably right. What about games we shouldn’t have? Getting 3 hits in LA and winning, getting no hit for 7 innings against the Cubs, Lidge throwing a ball away in the 9th. It may not all even out but do you GM’s out there think in these terms before you post. Also about Norton being a detriment. Yeah he sucks. What about Stairs in Philly being the go to guy off the bench. The guy didn’t a hit for over two months. That Manuel man, should have been canned for those decisions. Then again I guess they win 3 straight divisions.

I would have liked to see Cox step away and I think the game has passed him by to a extent. The thing is though the team the Braves are chasing ascribe to similar philosphy. Tracy came in made a couple of changes with position players(Barmes, Hawpe) and pretty much is credited for providing a stable environment conducive to team play. Sound a little familiar?? Lastly, the phrase “playing with sense of urgency” is the most overstated phrase I read here. Gimme a break. It’s about execution and the Braves have done that the last two weeks.

OK, so the Braves are 50-30 in the past 80 games.
That’s with all of the Bobby bashing, lots of games with Infante injured. The point: DO NOT trade away starting pitching. Would anyone really complain about a 100-60 record for the season? It’s this simple: Substitute the 2008 Chipper for the 2009 Chipper, and the Braves are in the playoffs — even with the surreal Greg Norton fixation. With this pitching staff, a World Series title is certainly possible.

Jurrjens4NLCY, I will love to have Hudson back as well. we will have a staff similar to the 90’s easily. But for that to happen, Wren will need to convince both Vazquez and Hudson to re-sign for lower salaries, so he can trade Lowe with us eating around 4 million of his salary, or trade Kawanami. One of those two will have to happen. Which one, I don’t know…

Francouer and Kelly Johnson and and the young centerfielder who wasn’t ready and whose name escapes me and no outfield power or leadoff hitter or speed and blown bullpen work have had their predicted effect. Folks, they are 50-30 since June 28, second-best record in the NL (Philly is 51-30 before tonight’s game) in that span. 50-30 is a half-season of baseball. They’ve been better than the Cardinals, Dodgers and Rockies over that 80-game stretch.

And it probably shouldn’t be that surprising they got better at midseason, considering they got such dreadful production from the entire outfield early on, with Francoeur playing poorly before he was traded, Schafer leading the world in strikeouts before he got sent down, and Anderson struggling early after missing most of spring training and much of April due to injuries.

In addition, the offense went to a different level after Prado took over at 2B for a slumping Kelly Johnson (that was June 30), and added its biggest power bat with the July 31 traded for LaRoche, who’s been sensational. And when McLouth has been healthy, he’s made an impact. Not as much as they’d expected, but the hammy and other aches have slowed him, more than he admitted I would guess.

Why are they so much better now than they were from April to late June? I think it’s pretty obvious. They’ve got a better lineup now, to go with the same outstanding starting pitching they’ve had all season. And I didn’t even mention the June arrival of Hanson. A good rotation got better when he arrived.

The Braves have been the best OFFENSIVE team in the league since the all-star break.

They are 2nd in post-all-star runs scored, behind the Cubs. BUT Chicago has scored only 3 more runs than ATL, and has played 2 more games.

The Braves are also 3rd in the NL in post-all-star team AVG. (.270), and 3rd in HR’s, just behind Colorado and Phili (who play, it’s safe to say, play in more homer-friendly ballparks).

They also have the best starters ERA in either league, and the 2nd best team ERA in all of baseball, both post-all-star, and for the season as a whole.

For instance, let’s say that instead of blowing 2 games against the Rockies that weekend….we blew 2 games against the Padres. We would still be 1 game out in the loss column. While we would have 2 less losses, the Rockies would still have the same record as they do now.

However, with those 2 Rockies games……if we had won both of those games that Bobby Cox mismanaged…….then we would have 2 LESS LOSSES……and the Rockies would have 2 MORE LOSSES…..hence the 4 game swing.
